Being Native American: the struggles and the benefits

  • Filmed at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado (in a school which used to be a boarding school for Native children and was then turned into a college) I looked at the struggles that Natives experience in our modern day world. Our individualistic society has now forced the Native American community to make the shift from a collectivist culture to individualistic one, and it has created a stir within the native community. This video was made for a multi cultural psychology course with all the best intentions.

    Standing ovation to the Native people going off to college. People calling them an "apple" are the ones that are jealous of the fact that they have the drive and mostly bravery to step outside of the negative thinking to go toward their goals to better their situation. I have seen this same behavior minus the race issue in my hometown area. People in my hometown area are not happy that you are advancing or even trying, they want you to "fail" or not try and be on their level. They become jealous and resentful of your accomplishments or the fact that you have enough self esteem to try. To me this is called collective empathy.

      Cheyennes were called the "beautiful people" Lewis and Clark first seen the Tribe. "Men were all over 6 foot tall and very handsome, the women who were also mostly 6 foot tall and are amazing." (at that time you needed to be at least 5'4" to join the military, so they were all looking up at the tribal members) Lewis and Clark said to have a "sense of standing in front of superior beings." This is a quote from one of the daily logs from the expedition, can't remember what day it was from. But that always stuck in my mind from when I first read it.

By gaining an education and understanding more about the world, you are actually in a better position to help your individual tribes / nations(!). I'm a small part cherokee but since Elementary school in New England I've been fascinated with Native American Tribes. There way's of life, values, lore, religion, even clothing have always captured my attention. All Tribes deserve more recognition and care than they get right now. I've seen the Reservations in Arizona; they're barren and sparse. Natives don't deserve that kind of land. Kids going into School in the future need to learn way more about the native tribes that were in their States before them. If you agree with what I have to say, feel free to copy this or even just reference it. If you don't agree with what I have to say than save your energy and just ignore it.

    Dagotee and Yateh’
    Just walk the Yellow Corn Pollen path.
    My 120 yr old Grandfather said, “You know who you are. You don’t need a government or person to tell you. Knowing who and what you are allows no one to tell you who and what you are. You are a grinding stone. You make good things from the earth. Stones are different shapes different colors different places. What is common about all stones even though they are different? The Creator God made them. And he made everyone of them perfect how they were made. “
    Our problem is we “The People” need to forgive, be good to each other. No amount of hate will bring the past back, only Love. Love the Creator who loves his children whether Dine’, Inde’ Cahuillia, Hamakahava, Vaneyume or the hundreds of people on Turtle Island. But we also need to realize the Creator made everybody and everything respecting Mother Earth begins with respect for your fellow man. So love your enemy and make him your friend. Bless the one who curses you that he will change. This is the Way and the Beauty Path. Hate ,has never done good for Indigenous people it just gets more of us killed. So Love each other, appreciate one another and their culture even the Walakahanna. This is the path.
    I hope this is a good thing I give to all of you. This was started by the Paiute Wavoka. But his words both white and red were taken out of context and used to deceive us by the Coyote for us to kill one another. Learn from the past and find peace and balance Hozho. Hold your culture dear and teach others those things even people not from you clan or tribe. And no matter how thin your bloodline gets. You will live forever.

    Many people of European ancestry feel similar. Those of Europe (except some Saami) don't even realize they had a culture before Roman Christianization ethnically cleansed them... It is the rich and powerful that herd everyone and they don't care what race, culture, or place you're from.

    We can sustain the culture. :-}
    It's been attacked for decades, but as long as
    we resist the ways of the system. All are
    labeled by numbers in today's society, social
    security, birth certificate, link, welfare, etc. This is being sustained, primarily by submission. However, this submission is being caused by a promotion of power. That is what i have come to see in my studies, it is a psychological-ideology, yet, it works perfectly on we, the people. It is "Conditioning." ={

    I think its sad & disgusting that someone is being made to feel like an outsider, just because they want to better themselves, regardless of race...education means, understanding, freedom, & power...& along with that, the knowledge/power to educate others! As the teacher said, respect is a two way street, there is much that both sides can learn from each other, & more so on a world scale, there is still much that we as people can learn from native peoples. Great video, asks some questions that really hit home, just a shame that these students were getting treated with contempt from their own people...btw, the girl at 3:15 is very cute, cheers.

    Aside from everything else, a language is of the soul of a people. One can't go on and on about, say, the lessons one learned from one's grandparents, and then refuse to learn or speak the language of one's people.
    It's almost like when Native women die their hair blond or lighten it--if you've got beautiful hair already (as Native women have), why imitate the appearance of another people (and it's tempting to say why imitate the looks of the oppressors of one's people.)
    The dynamics between the European oppressors and their European victims are different than those between European-Americans and Native people, but this matter of Native Americans not knowing and or not speaking their people's language reminds me of the Irish: most Irish in Ireland speak English as their mother tongue, even though English was the language of their Anglo-Saxon oppressors.

    Everyone talks about "immersive education" , where the First Nation People are re-taught how to converse in their indigenous language and relate more to their ancestral culture, as proposed by the Lakota, Russel Means. Foe example, how does one behave in Indigenous culture? How are the genders respected? How can one relate to the Great Myster? This movement can unite all indigenous cultures.
    Who are organizing them?🔥🙄

    I guess you could
    say many cultures were destroyed, in
    order for the dream of the transcontinental-rail road, as
    well as a society based on a central bank and federal government
    to take the helm.
    It used to be culture, and freedom, which
    roam the lands, now it is boundaries.
    Many still try to sustain their old-ways though, it can
    be hard doing this in today's society though.

    watching this just makes me more aware that we know nothing about the Native American...why don't we see more of them in our culture? The Black, Asian and Hispanic have stepped up here in America to be seen...where are the Native Americans? Do they wish to be part of the modern culture...I don't mean this negatively...just very curious because we don't have a modern updated version of the Indian that we can visually see and understand.

    I'm from Europe but I feel connected to NA people spiritually. I lost touch with my ancestors cause terror of Christianity. Tho some ancestral rituals were integrated into Christianity in my country, we know nothing about our ancestors. When Christianity came they literally erased our past, our ancestors. Even when you look in historical archives you can barely find anything about our ancestors or spiritual guides. With the coming of Christianity we distanced ourselves from nature and made ourselves believe that we are it's masters, which is wrong. We should live together with nature and not live of nature.

      thats not true, theirs plenty of information on our mythology and gods, the wheel of the year and what holidays were celebrated. open a book and read about your heritage then find communities in your area and learn how we celebrate our gods.

      Yahweh God your actually the dumb fuck + Ignorant for making a stupid answer to his wrong question. He asked if Native Americans Mexicans. Assuming this is his correct question "Aren't Native Americans the people that look Mexican". The correct answer should be that Natives are the first and/or decedent of the first people in a specific land (country or region etc). Usually YES what we so call Mexican looking people are the original natives of America. Note: We should all be aware that Caucasian, Negro and Asian people are immigrants or immigrant descendant of America.

      Dude i know that but you don't understand the statement i made. I said that the original natives of America look mexican.

    • @wecare.
      @wecare. 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you are telling me. I know there are Mexicans that look different, but what the ordinary person usually think is that all if not all Mexican look like ORIGINAL natives (first) which originially look like what ignorants like that dude you wrongly responded to call "Mexican looking". An is not like that. Im aware there are mexicans of all real 3 races(black, white and asian) or a mix.
