This is very true and It's often ignored in this country. Black Americans are a blend of African, European and Native American ancestry, (and sometimes a splash of East Asian). We are indigenous to this country. We were “created” here. I have 34% European DNA. I read somewhere that back in the 1930s Black Americans were perceived at the time: as a new race, birthed in Africa, but modified by their American experience. This is how I tend to contextualize it all.
Most AAs don’t have Native American ancestry. The small amount of AAs that do only have tiny amounts of it. AAs with significant amount of Native American ancestry like Snoop Dogg aren’t common. AAs are mostly a mixture of African and European, but they are predominantly West African in DNA and phenotype.
The Americans are the black or Moorish/Mauritanian races. You have many immigrant including those that came as colonials that democratically superimposed themselves as American. American/Marikanos/Moroccan are all the same.
Yeah what’s really wild is, black Americans are mixed with 8 to 10 different African ethnics before you even factor in European & indigenous dna. Blacks are now learning this history. I’m also Louisiana Creole on both sides of my family & descend from Spaniards/Mexicans & indigenous of Central American tribes of Louisiana.
Out of my 14 ethnic groups, 7 are of African groups (86%). 5 ethnic groups are of European ethnic groups (12%). The last 2 regions are from the states and Mexico (2%).
Same with the average White American average White American are Mixed with many European Ethnic groups British, Irish, French, German, Romanian, Italian, Portugese, Czech etc etc It is said that 10% of all White Americans in the Southern USA have Black African DNA that's like 7,000,000+ people look it up.

Can confirm. If you look at me, you would think I am mostly Black with a hint of something you can't place. Turns out I am half English with a blend of Irish and Scottish and the other half of the pie chart is a blend of three East African tribes, two Native American tribes, and Filipina. That's just on my maternal grandmother's side! My maternal grandfather is Black Cherokee. My father is a blend of Biracial (African American/European American) and one or more Native American tribes. When people ask what I am, I just say AMERICAN. It's accurate and easier than going down the list every single time 😜.

‘Native American’ is a label that why people gave the indigenous people they found. Their ethnic origins/racial classification would be Asian. So racially, you’re white and Asian.

Agree with this 100% - In the U.S. race is very important because it was used as a way to divide and put people in categories. White people can just be "Americans", but people of color have to have an added label and can never be just "American" (excluding at one point in time Greeks, Irish, Italian immigrants, but not so much now). In America POC have to tack on a extra label based on their appearance; Asian Americans, Black Americans, Mexican American, Cuban American, Middle Eastern American, etc. White people can just be American though - we don't call Trump a German American, because that would be weird I guess.

Isn’t it interesting how everyone points to other people besides themselves upholding arbitrary racial categories, but very few seem to challenge it by refusing to use these categories themselves? I’ve personally watched this happen for decades. The only reason we have these racial issues is because we choose to have them.
Race is often a determining factor of class. Black people are redlined in poorer communities those communities get less funding and suffer with all the ills that poverty bring and few make it out the hood so to speak which keeps more black people out of the wealthy groups.

This is thought provoking. Yes both races are definitely mixed! Its so strange that the US doesn’t recognize that. I wonder why. Also side note, that’s amazing that you have a grandmother that has a lot of native ancestry! I believe even in Mexico they don’t acknowledge native ancestry, they forced everyone to treat being Mexican as a race which was a way that Spaniards use to try to diminish/remove indigenous culture. Spaniards use to classify people as castizo (pure european), mestizo (native and euro), mulatto (black and euro) before the pushed for having everyone refer to themselves as Mexicans only to push for nationalism. Just a few years ago it was on the news that they added to the census where you can select black Mexican. Americans not seeing Mexicans as biracials or simply not acknowledging that being Mexican is nationality not a race/ethnicity is probably the reason why for this whole mix up. Nearly everyone in the USA is mixed ethnicity. RACE is Classism not ethnicity. "Africans" (Moors & Jews) were kicked out of Europe in 1491 to the 1600's, many came to the Americas before the Spanish American war of 1898. Dark skinned people are forced into the lowest class in the US as the had lost the war(s). The Americas has always been a melting pot which is why the New World aka government passed the Jim Crow laws. Irish, Italians and Lebanese sued in court to be labeled "White" and won. White was previously reserved for the England, Scottish and Dutch.
Imo, most black Americans (those who are descendants of the enslaved Africans brought to this country), are multi-generationally mixed. Meaning we had European, Native or even Asian ancestors at some point in our timelines. Biracial black Americans are those who are immediately born from a European, Asian, Latino and/or black parentage. Black Americans can vary in mixture. For example, I'm dark brown and by siblings are golden brown. Our mothers family seemed to have less African admixture or maybe a particular mixture of different African groups. Something like southeast or northeast African. She was lighter skinned then all of us, pale and had a specific look that harkens to either European or something else. But she had a Scott-Irish last name. My father's family is southern, creole and darker yet lighter in other aspects. So, we came about and when I was growing up. People asked what I was mixed with? I didn't understand why they asked that. I looked black, but maybe my features weren't considered "purely" black. Personally, I look blasian. When in highschool my sister and I lied stating we were mixed with portuguese. Cause that's what we thought....maybe. since we didn't really know our mother or her family. Still I got called blasian. Lol When I was out of highschool, a lady seemed determined to figure out what I was. She kept asking If I was half Asian, native American, Haitian, and finally Hawaiian. I just stared at her and laughed. This white chic was so uncomfortably stomped at my appearance and complexion, she needed to verify what I was. I'm human, but America has a peculiar way of dealing with race and ethnicity. I think this is a legacy of slavery and our class/race based system. I always imagine the hilarious terror white people must've had back in the day when screening other white people for black DNA.
This is remarkably similar to my experience as a Louisiana creole descendant. My mother’s skin is yellow-brown sort of golden colored with tightly coiled hair and my dad is light brown with wiry hair which led to me and my sister being similarly light brown with tightly coiled hair, but when most people see us they’re best adjectives are “exotic” or “interesting-looking”. Funnily, when white people spin the race wheel they also land on either Samoan or blasian. I just find it amazing how genetics work because my grandmother on my mother’s side and my grandfather on my dad’s side are completely white passing. I think my great grandmother on my mother’s side must have been French Acadian or something like that because in pictures when she was younger she looked fully European with extremely pale skin and dark hair.
Most AAs are mainly just West African and European descent. And the majority of AAs are over 80% African. The ones with significant European ancestry are in the minority.

I recently learned that James Brown's father was Black and native; while his mother was black and Chinese. He was a mixture of America. Lol His appearance even reflected that. But the main one is black and European. With a majority being 75 to 80% black. The outliers are either less than 25% (creoles or multi/ recent mixtures) or more than 85% like the Gullah folk. But the variations in appearances can be fascinating. Not only that there's a huge amount of diversity in the West African gene pool and some Africans were taken from the south, the interior or north east Africa.

“Biracial” wouldn’t be the correct term for Hispanics or Blacks. Although most of us have mixed lineage, biracial is defined as someone who is around 50/50 , with parents of different races. My parents acknowledge having mixed heritage but they still consider themselves black.

@@greatnessawaits4151 No they are not, mixed heritage yes, but not biracial since African Americans have several different African heritage groups. Not all Africans are the same, so even without the European DNA, which 67% of black Americans do not have, would still be considered mixed in Africa.
In another video I have told you that I am Basque. only Basque. Part of us are from the French part and others from the Spanish part, in my case from the French part but only because the identity document puts it, I know of more than one Basque-American, not to mention, for the most part, even one congressman for California, which when filling in the census (for Europe we are surprised to have to indicate the race seems a bit Nazi to us) does not call itself Hispanic. The Hispanic thing is, rather, by mother tongue Spanish, not as race, I would say that Hispanic is the Castilian speaking, whether of the race that is even unp from the Philippines or Equatorial Guinea or Western Sahara

@@naga7461 It does. East Africans (the Black ancestors we are told we have), if you know any, don't have fine baby hairs on their hairlines unless they are mixed with Arabs, Asians or Europeans. I know this because I know many East Africans personally. Their hair lines are very thick and tightly curled. You can tell the difference between Black Americans and pure East Africans as soon as you compare faces and and hairline textures. It's painful to admit, but Black Americans whose ancestry dates past the 1900s on American soil, are guaranteed to be mixed with other people besides Africans.
The easiest answer for a topic like this is that Black American community is a distinct ethnic community and their identity is an American shaped identity via proximity to The Pre Civil War(1860) Black American population; a collectively admixed African and European population along with other ethnicities. So since they're their own ethnic community, that shapes their identity and having White American ancestors born decades before or around The Civil War is part and parcel of their genetic makeup. Once you add the history of segregation into the mix which was created to disenfranchise that community which is what the classification of American Blackness was about, then it's understandable why Black Americans identity as they do.

My Sub Saharan African ancestry is highly likely to consist of many Sub Saharan African ethnic groups. I have some Indigenous American segments on my paternal chromosomes and not just my maternal chromosomes and X Chromosome, but I don't know what kind of Indigenous American ancestry that I have on my father's side. I also have some Malagasy ancestry on my father's side.
“Black Americans” are actually a mixture of African and Asiatic with some European. I’m not talking about being “mixed” with Asians or “white” Europeans either. This is based on Haplogroup. So what I’m saying is that when I see Europe on my 23 & Me results it’s not necessarily saying that the ancestry from Europe is a “white” ancestor but they very well could’ve been Negroid in Europe. Yes, they were white. In that case why were white people enslaving them? Because they looked different. You know not everyone is as far removed from slavery so they have photos of their ancestors. Men can have children until they die. Some people are very close to slavery like myself because my great grandfather was having kids with a woman almost 30 years youngers than him. All of my grandfathers brothers were very light like their mixed race father with straight hair.
This is true all around the board. Even "mixed" people who look white might be percieved as white by a non-white racial group, even though they are mixed and identify with two races. Race is a very deep seeded American concept, and is just a part of our society at this point. I think a Mestizo category needs to be put in place under the racial category, to better capture the identity of people with roots in Latin America. Personally, I identify as indigenous, because my indigenous feautures are apparent, and everyone around me automatically assumes i am Mexican/of Mexican descent due to my indigenous physical characteristics. They are right in this assumption, and it reinforces (or perhaps is the basis of) this indigenous identity I have. However, genetically speaking I am a mestizo, being 60% Native, 35% european, and 5% african according to a DNA test. I like this channel and the questions and opinions you put forth. I think race and identity is an interesting topic. It most certainly is tied to politics. I wonder who will be considered white in the future. Will someone who is 80-95% white and looks 100% white be considered a mixed or white person? Since pure white people will be a minority within the next 2 decades, i have to imagine the identity politics on that end will change as well.
The central problem is that we don't boycott the race category system. There is no biological foundation for race so this is where the confusion. Do a video on the one drop rule to understand why most Americans don't acknowledge mixed genetic heritage of brown people. It's purely social and unnecessary.
I hate how we project to the world that we are "Americans" and then we divide people into ethnicity and race. I hate filling out the boxes because I consider myself mixed. I am 54% European and 30% Native American and it is quite annoying to identify as one group or another in this country. The worst part is that I look native american although I am light skin. Hey, a lot people don't get that Spanish is White/European and no one was speaking Spanish in the Americas until the colonist from Spain invaded and took over the different countries. People from Portugal, Spain and German, Dutch, French and Greek are the White Ancestry in South America. West African makes up a part and Indigenous makes up the rest of the combined Heritage. The Majority of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking people (Not all) are gong to have some European/White Ancestry. They also don't realize the term Latin comes from Europe to explain the different types of Europeans that occupy the Mediterranean. It's known as the love language. The first thing that happened was Black people who were no longer enslaved started to gain power. ( Not all) Some of the White people didn't like that. Secondly, the people that had admixtures which made them aesthetically White or ambiguous started to disassociate themselves from the darker more African-looking people thereby leaving them behind to fend for themselves. (Not all) Some Black people didn't like that.

All I can say is my Native ancestry was speaking Native tongues from pre-1492 until 1928, during which time the Native blood of the Mexicans were speaking Spanish only. So they're Europeans. Have been for 500 years. Likewise, Blacks are just an African origin English speaker.

Native American is defined by having a Native relationship to your homeland within the context of American colonialism. It doesn't apply to Latin Americans, it does to Hawaii and Alaska. I don't care about your DNA, your culture is European Spaniard and your Indigenous side is from outside the U.S. jurisdiction. This is very true and It's often ignored in this country. Black Americans are a blend of African, European and Native American ancestry, (and sometimes a splash of East Asian). We are indigenous to this country. We were “created” here. I have 34% European DNA. I read somewhere that back in the 1930s Black Americans were perceived at the time: as a new race, birthed in Africa, but modified by their American experience. This is how I tend to contextualize it all.

Most AAs don’t have Native American ancestry. The small amount of AAs that do only have tiny amounts of it. AAs with significant amount of Native American ancestry like Snoop Dogg aren’t common. Can confirm. If you look at me, you would think I am mostly Black with a hint of something you can't place. Turns out I am half English with a blend of Irish and Scottish and the other half of the pie chart is a blend of three East African tribes, two Native American tribes, and Filipina. That's just on my maternal grandmother's side! My maternal grandfather is Black Cherokee. My father is a blend of Biracial (African American/European American) and one or more Native American tribes. When people ask what I am, I just say AMERICAN. It's accurate and easier than going down the list every single time 😜.

Agree with this 100% - In the U.S. race is very important because it was used as a way to divide and put people in categories. White people can just be "Americans", but people of color have to have an added label and can never be just "American" (excluding at one point in time Greeks, Irish, Italian immigrants, but not so much now). Isn’t it interesting how everyone points to other people besides themselves upholding arbitrary racial categories, but very few seem to challenge it by refusing to use these categories themselves? I’ve personally watched this happen for decades. The only reason we have these racial issues is because we choose to have them.
Race is often a determining factor of class. Black people are redlined in poorer communities those communities get less funding and suffer with all the ills that poverty bring and few make it out the hood so to speak which keeps more black people out of the wealthy groups.
I'm 12% European and 2% Native American/Indigenous Mexican. In some places, I'm perceived and viewed as mixed, but here in America... I'm Black!

I believe even in Mexico they don’t acknowledge native ancestry, they forced everyone to treat being Mexican as a race which was a way that Spaniards use to try to diminish/remove indigenous culture. Spaniards use to classify people as castizo (pure european), mestizo (native and euro), mulatto (black and euro) before the pushed for having everyone refer to themselves as Mexicans only to push for nationalism. Just a few years ago it was on the news that they added to the census where you can select black Mexican. Americans not seeing Mexicans as biracials or simply not acknowledging that being Mexican is nationality not a race/ethnicity is probably the reason why for this whole mix up. Nearly everyone in the USA is mixed ethnicity. RACE is Classism not ethnicity.
"Africans" (Moors & Jews) were kicked out of Europe in 1491 to the 1600's, many came to the Americas before the Spanish American war of 1898. Dark skinned people are forced into the lowest class in the US as the had lost the war(s). The Americas has always been a melting pot which is why the New World aka government passed the Jim Crow laws. Irish, Italians and Lebanese sued in court to be labeled "White" and won. White was previously reserved for the England, Scottish and Dutch.

Imo, most black Americans (those who are descendants of the enslaved Africans brought to this country), are multi-generationally mixed. Meaning we had European, Native or even Asian ancestors at some point in our timelines.
Biracial black Americans are those who are immediately born from a European, Asian, Latino and/or black parentage. Black Americans can vary in mixture. For example, I'm dark brown and by siblings are golden brown. Our mothers family seemed to have less African admixture or maybe a particular mixture of different African groups. Something like southeast or northeast African. She was lighter skinned then all of us, pale and had a specific look that harkens to either European or something else. But she had a Scott-Irish last name.
My father's family is southern, creole and darker yet lighter in other aspects. So, we came about and when I was growing up. People asked what I was mixed with? I didn't understand why they asked that. I looked black, but maybe my features weren't considered "purely" black. Personally, I look blasian. When in highschool my sister and I lied stating we were mixed with portuguese. Cause that's what we thought....maybe. since we didn't really know our mother or her family. Still I got called blasian. This white chic was so uncomfortably stomped at my appearance and complexion, she needed to verify what I was. I'm human, but America has a peculiar way of dealing with race and ethnicity. I think this is a legacy of slavery and our class/race based system.
I always imagine the hilarious terror white people must've had back in the day when screening other white people for black DNA.
This is remarkably similar to my experience as a Louisiana creole descendant. My mother’s skin is yellow-brown sort of golden colored with tightly coiled hair and my dad is light brown with wiry hair which led to me and my sister being similarly light brown with tightly coiled hair, but when most people see us they’re best adjectives are “exotic” or “interesting-looking”. Funnily, when white people spin the race wheel they also land on either Samoan or blasian. I just find it amazing how genetics work because my grandmother on my mother’s side and my grandfather on my dad’s side are completely white passing.
I think my great grandmother on my mother’s side must have been French Acadian or something like that because in pictures when she was younger she looked fully European with extremely pale skin and dark hair.
Most AAs are mainly just West African and European descent. And the majority of AAs are over 80% African. The ones with significant European ancestry are in the minority.

His appearance even reflected that. But the main one is black and European. With a majority being 75 to 80% black. The outliers are either less than 25% (creoles or multi/ recent mixtures) or more than 85% like the Gullah folk. But the variations in appearances can be fascinating. Not only that there's a huge amount of diversity in the West African gene pool and some Africans were taken from the south, the interior or north east Africa.

In another video I have told you that I am Basque. only Basque. Part of us are from the French part and others from the Spanish part, in my case from the French part but only because the identity document puts it, I know of more than one Basque-American, not to mention, for the most part, even one congressman for California, which when filling in the census (for Europe we are surprised to have to indicate the race seems a bit Nazi to us) does not call itself Hispanic. I know this because I know many East Africans personally. Their hair lines are very thick and tightly curled. You can tell the difference between Black Americans and pure East Africans as soon as you compare faces and and hairline textures. It's painful to admit, but Black Americans whose ancestry dates past the 1900s on American soil, are guaranteed to be mixed with other people besides Africans.
The easiest answer for a topic like this is that Black American community is a distinct ethnic community and their identity is an American shaped identity via proximity to The Pre Civil War(1860) Black American population; a collectively admixed African and European population along with other ethnicities.
So since they're their own ethnic community, that shapes their identity and having White American ancestors born decades before or around The Civil War is part and parcel of their genetic makeup.
Once you add the history of segregation into the mix which was created to disenfranchise that community which is what the classification of American Blackness was about, then it's understandable why Black Americans identity as they do.

Because of the Transatlantic Slave trade, I don't know anything about my Sub Saharan African ancestry, but I am sure that it's mainly from West and Central Africa. Most of the Sub Saharan African slaves were brought from West and Central Africa. Africa has over 3,000 ethnic groups, and that includes Nigeria having over 400 ethnic groups. My Sub Saharan African ancestry is highly likely to consist of many Sub Saharan African ethnic groups. I have some Indigenous American segments on my paternal chromosomes and not just my maternal chromosomes and X Chromosome, but I don't know what kind of Indigenous American ancestry that I have on my father's side. I also have some Malagasy ancestry on my father's side.
“Black Americans” are actually a mixture of African and Asiatic with some European. I’m not talking about being “mixed” with Asians or “white” Europeans either. This is based on Haplogroup. So what I’m saying is that when I see Europe on my 23 & Me results it’s not necessarily saying that the ancestry from Europe is a “white” ancestor but they very well could’ve been Negroid in Europe. Yes, they were white. In that case why were white people enslaving them? Because they looked different. You know not everyone is as far removed from slavery so they have photos of their ancestors. Men can have children until they die. Some people are very close to slavery like myself because my great grandfather was having kids with a woman almost 30 years youngers than him. This is true all around the board. Even "mixed" people who look white might be percieved as white by a non-white racial group, even though they are mixed and identify with two races. Race is a very deep seeded American concept, and is just a part of our society at this point. I think a Mestizo category needs to be put in place under the racial category, to better capture the identity of people with roots in Latin America. Personally, I identify as indigenous, because my indigenous feautures are apparent, and everyone around me automatically assumes i am Mexican/of Mexican descent due to my indigenous physical characteristics. They are right in this assumption, and it reinforces (or perhaps is the basis of) this indigenous identity I have. However, genetically speaking I am a mestizo, being 60% Native, 35% european, and 5% african according to a DNA test. I like this channel and the questions and opinions you put forth. I think race and identity is an interesting topic. It most certainly is tied to politics. I wonder who will be considered white in the future. Will someone who is 80-95% white and looks 100% white be considered a mixed or white person? Since pure white people will be a minority within the next 2 decades, i have to imagine the identity politics on that end will change as well.

Biracial and Black people are not treated the same. Statistically educators grade us more harshly, hospitals register pain even less leading to an early grave much of the time, and people are generally, statistically speaking, more inclined to be nicer if they think your mixed with something. Hey, a lot people don't get that Spanish is White/European and no one was speaking Spanish in the Americas until the colonist from Spain invaded and took over the different countries. People from Portugal, Spain and German, Dutch, French and Greek are the White Ancestry in South America. West African makes up a part and Indigenous makes up the rest of the combined Heritage. The Majority of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking people (Not all) are gong to have some European/White Ancestry. They also don't realize the term Latin comes from Europe to explain the different types of Europeans that occupy the Mediterranean. It's known as the love language. (Or Romance) Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian (Somehow growing up I don't remember Romania being in there but they do have Count Dracula and a whole lot of Sexy men who were actors so I guess they can stay LOL) Well anyway, the thing with Black people and the one drop rule originated doing the imprisonment and torture of kidnapped Africans in order to place value on them as property. During the enslavement until shortly after there were classifications for Black people of mixed status. (Can't think of all the terms off the top of my head but the one drop rule was fading away until two things happened. The first thing that happened was Black people who were no longer enslaved started to gain power. ( Not all) Some of the White people didn't like that. Secondly, the people that had admixtures which made them aesthetically White or ambiguous started to disassociate themselves from the darker more African-looking people thereby leaving them behind to fend for themselves. (Not all) Some Black people didn't like that.

One drop rule is a concept that blackness persist in mixed offspring as vapors that tinted the skin.
There was an "experiment" done in which mixed race children were leeched and drained of blood in an attempt to purify them bit since they still retained tinted skin and curly hair it was determined that "black blood was incurable as even one drop was enough to pollute the blood."

African does not equal being black because not all Africa is black! African Americans ancestors were from West Africa and they are the darkest shade in Africa and with particular facial features that distinguish them from other Africans and if you go there you'll see the clear difference between them and black people in America and this is because of generational mixing due to slavery in America. There is no such thing as full black in America. And the term biracial literally means 2 races in someone's DNA, not half half or %. So yeah black people in America are in fact mixed genetically speaking. But people are free to identify themselves how they wish.

Omg FINALLY!! Black people here in America are multiracial and multiethnic! That is why I put other for race. But I am Ethnically Black American. To speak truthfully we are very much so other! I have multiple African countries, multiple European countries, Native American, and even Asian. So how the hell am I classified as “Black”racially. Black Americans need to accept all our diversity. We are what we are.
No blacks are admixed
