  • Guitar tutor reacts to first time hearing Band Maid DIFFERENT live version. Reaction & analysis by pro musician with breakdown and lesson of a chunky Miku & Kanami guitar riff! This is a bit more detail than some react formats tend to be, so if you want to learn a bit about the music, hopefully this will be up your street!
Once again having my mind blown by these all female Japanese rock band, but we also learn about some of the music theory elements. I have to say even as a guitarist, Different had me pretty flummoxed on first listen! Reminded me a wee bit of Black Hole, am I alone in that?? And liek that one, perhaps not my best analysed band-maid track, but you can probably understand why!

I'm always a bit wary of acoustic version cause of that wave in the late 90s/early 00s, where every band just seemed to do doing pretty uninspired versions of their won tunes, to be fair there was some gold in there as well! Intrigued to hear how these guys tackle it!

@@JbfMusicGuitar They were far from being uninspired. Back then everybody had to because TV and record companies demanded it more or less, no wonder many were uninspired by having to play acoustic. This time Band-Maid chose themselves to do an acoustic event with 14 songs in it, and IMHO they nailed it, and sounded great and it was a fun time for them. Saiki's voice was at top level all thru the event, Miku had a few solo songs and she was great too. New this time was Kanami did way more chorus and backing vocals, and for the first time ever MISA and Akane sang choruses, damn I hope they do this more often because it sounded absolutely fantastic with all girls singing :-)

@@JbfMusicGuitar that's funny because my first comment about the acoustic concert was that amongst the "unplugged" concerts of the nineties, many were uninspired because the electric guitar was simply replaced by an acoustic. And that's exactly what Band-Maid .. DIDN'T! They totally re-arranged their songs in the most inspired and beautifull way. A musician delight.

Kanami has _two_ Digitech Drops on her pedalboard. It may be her favorite pedal; during their online "audition" she asked Herman Li if he had one. A couple other reactors have also caught that she will sometimes jump waaaaay up the neck on a string rather than the easier option of moving across the fretboard to a higher-pitched string. Best guess is she prefers the tone of doing it that way on some parts.
Once again, your ability to note the elements they work in from widely-disparate styles outside of the usual hard rock comparisons is really valuable.

Thanks for the info Steve! They really are pushing the boundaries of 'rock', it's still rock for the most part, but also... not? 😵

I'm actually not at all a friend of trashy or chaotic metal music, which is why I pressed the pause button after a few seconds the first time I heard this track. With the feeling of being run over by a freight train, I first went to the kitchen to make myself a coffee. However, these few seconds were enough to burn the melody which the guitars play in my brain and I whistled it quietly without noticing it. :) Can't remember ever liking 'controlled chaos' so much.
But the ladies put the icing on the cake just a few days ago when they had this song in their set list of their acoustic online concert. I still can't believe how well they performed the song so minimalistically with just a guitar and Saiki's and Kanami's angelic voices. 💞😇
Greetings and in advance the best possible start into the new year!

Your insight on it sounding circusey is correct, whether that was the Maid's intention or not, as I had also posted many times in other past reactions when this song dropped a year ago that it indeed had a familiar carnival/circusey feel to it when I first heard it. Because of my experience & exposure to western classical-type music when I was growing up in the 1970's & 80's (playing sousaphone/tuba/baritone in highschool), I eventually was able to pick up some past music that Different was similar to, in beats & rhythms. For a couple examples, if you listen to "Entry of the Gladiators" (aka "Thunder & Blazes") by Julius Fucik, from the 19th century, the descending chromatics may sound familiar. That piece eventually became known for being a theme at circuses, such as at Barnum & Bailey. Also listen to "Sabre Dance"
by Aram Khachaturian, from the mid 20th century, to hear that fast 1-2-1-2 oompah-oompah beat, which to me is the "thrash circus music" that you were saying. It is somewhat, say, Gypsy-like, who they are indeed of Jewish descent, as you also said "traditional Jewish music". I had never seen anyone else comment about this except me, so perhaps whoever told you may have seen my comments about it a year ago, who knows, or they indeed had exposure to such types of traditional music as well. And as I have said before, I was not surprised that the Maids used this century-old style of music, as at least 3 of the gals are classically-trained, going to specific music school(s) in Japan, so getting exposed to both Western (European) & Eastern (Asian) classical music, as well as Modern western Impressionist/Classicist (early 20th century), et al, was likely a part of their syllabi. Great analysis & breakdown on your guitar.

This song “Different”, along with the new song “Sense”, are opening theme songs for Anime tv shows in Japan. Opening Anime music tends to be over the top, frenetic, thrashy and compressed. While “Different” is fast paced and thrash, it’s very well played.

Many skilled musicians have trained themselves to the level of having relative pitch. With relative pitch you can pick any note if you have the start note. In the online acoustic christmas show, you see Miku strum a chord wait a bit and then starts to sing in a higher note then the root note of the chord, what she does is using relative pitch. I does a bit of singing and chorus with the bands I play in, it's quite easy when you have that ability of relative pitch. And no I do not have perfect pitch, only 1 in 10000 have perfect pitch on average.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jan-ovepedersen5764 I figured the likelihood of them having perfect pitch would be low. But like you say, most of us have relative pitch. I've only met a handful of musicians that have it, can think of one guy off the top of my head

I appreciate the reaction to Different. It was a lot of information - thanks again. If I could suggest why don't you take a look at one of the regular live pieces like 'Puzzle' then examine the acoustic version of the same song. The frenetic feel of this song is due to it being commissioned as an anime opening song for Log Horizon. I think if you take a look at the AMV (anime music video) for this song the phrasing and tone will make more sense (no pun intended).
You mentioned her possible use of pedals... have you thought about doing a gear breakdown for the band? Maybe take a look at their various pedal boards?
Anywho, this song has a very Conqueror-era vibe to it, imo, especially the tone of Kanami's guitar, very similar to Screaming.

Happy almost New Year! As several people have already mentioned, Band Maid did an all acoustic show on Christmas. It is available on the Zaiko streaming service through the 31st. If you get the extended version, you can watch through the end of March. They really reworked their songs and it is fascinating how they change them. Not only did they do a version of Different, but several other songs you wouldn't expect - Black Hole and H-G-K. It isn't that expensive to get and well worth it. If you do get it, I don't think you would be able to do a direct reaction with the video included, but I would love to hear your take on the changes and choices they made. What goes into changing from one more to the other?
Anyhow, fun and informative reaction as usual. Many thanks!

Hi. I Know you like this kind of raw sound most of the times. However, this video is not good. Something have happend with the post production probably. For me in this video everything almost smears together so it's hard to hear. I can hear som notes from guitars better than on other videos however, I do not hear the base at all. She is doing work in this song. The music video is much more post produced but there you can hear everything. It might also be out there better live versions of this song.

Correction my friend. They do it always. They always do. You are getting dangerously close to becoming a full fledged Maidiac. And l say surrender now because resistance is futile. Carl Jung postulated the collective conscience of humanity. Things like in the past pyramids appeared in different corners of the world when the people who built those pyramids had no contact with each other. I think Band-Maid has managed to tap into a shared musical conscience that lives within so many of us. That's an opinion. Sacramento loves Band-Maid is a fact. Best regards.
