  • Band Maid WONDERLAND Live Reaction first time hearing this song & Analysis by Guitar Tutor and professional Musician. So do theses guys actually have any bad songs?!?! Loved this. More sparse than usual, which worked so well for the song, Saiki's vocals are totally on point, that high head tone was so well suited to the vibe and feel of the song. Aside from the song analysis, I tried to dive a bit in to Misa's ever sliding bass style and might have figured out why she likes to play this way- what do you guys reckon???

    Thanks for showing this song some love Jack! A lot of people will overlook this song and a lot on Conqueror because they want something faster and heavier. It’s just a great vocal showcase for Saiki and Miku, and like all their songs is still incredibly well written for casual enjoyment or in depth analyses.

      Yeah I know. It's like it's not as fast, yet it has all complexities, the gold 2nd verse with interesting note or chord choice, the classic unexpected pause by Band-Maid...btw it sort of reminds me of Sayonakidori, the folk vibe Jack mentioned, almost sounds persian inspired, could be Japanese, celtic...or all of these. They are so amazing, aren't they?

    Thanks for another great reaction for BAND MAID, on what I think is one of Saiki's best live vocal performances. As for Misa's bass playing and tone, there are times when I listen to many BAND MAID songs, live or MV, that all I try to focus on is her. Someone has probably already suggested that you find the acoustic version of Wonderland from the Christmas concert - just Saiki, Kanami and Misa together - gives the song a totally different aspect. The concert is an amazing experience and tickets are still available thru March 25.

    Misa does that a lot, moving to the upper frets instead of staying in the same area and choosing to use the higher strings. She works hard to keep the tones that she wants to use. Go watch the official live video of "Catharsis" on their official channel. It's from their Christmas acoustic online concert. She is moving all over the fretboard. You can see it clearly because the setting was all it up with no flashing lights.

    Ah yes! Another Band-Maid analysis! I'm always looking forward to those, keep'em coming! Funny thing is I picked up a bass for quite cheap a few months ago and I started playing it today. Good timing on this one! I'm also happy to see you look into a different vibe from Band-Maid, it's cool to see how diverse their catalog is. I'd be really interested in hearing your take on "about Us", a really good pop ballad that they wrote during the pandemic and is dedicated to their fans. Very soft but with a lot of very intricate ideas interwoven (as per Band-Maid's usual style). Thanks as always for your great work!

    Fantastic!. This time the turn of MISA. This song really goes off the rails with some unconventional conversation between the instruments. Funky?, Jazzy?, it´s a very original art work, one of my favourites. Great job Jack, appreciated. Spot-on comments about the range of the Saiki´s voice too.

  • @kicorse
    @kicorse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Really happy to hear you break down Wonderland, and bring out its distinctiveness. As you imply, it's not a conventional softer song, but it's my favourite of their softer songs. Daydreaming (which is also great, especially the guitar solo) seems to be more popular with the fan-base as a whole. Both songs also have perfect song titles to match the music, much like Black Hole.
    I also get confused by the different terminologies used for male and female voices, but I do know that female falsetto exists, so you can use that word if you're confident that's what it is. However, it creates a much larger contrast in male voices, so the existence of female falsetto used to be controversial, and it's easy to mis-identify it.
    I've just re-watched Julia Nilon's reaction to this song. She doesn't talk about falsetto, but says Saiki is using her second register here, which I think is the same thing. She is very impressed by Saiki's use of her second register, and her vocals in this song more generally. (Also Miku's, having criticised her verse in Freedom.)

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That sounds about right, the contrast in timbre is probably much more prominent in male voices.
      Yeah, falsetto would could as a second register- that's probably a better or more correct term!

    • @fruitproof115
      @fruitproof115 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JbfMusicGuitar As far as I know, the term falsetto is predominantely used in classical music while in modern pop/rock you would call it head voice or second register. But it means the same.

    Thanks, Jack, excellent highlights as usual! The instrumental & vocal techniques you point out are important to the composition as a whole. For me, Wonderland is exactly about the relationship of instruments and vocals, and how they unfold over the course of four minutes, and then finally resolve at the end. Miku's lyrics are particularly affecting, and seem to be about pushing through a broken relationship.

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A song that may not come across as complicated to untrained ears due to its tempo and mood. But even here the ladies incorporate so many subtle details. And not just through a single instrument, but each one has its special passages. I think the title 'Wonderland' fits the mood of the song perfectly. :)
    I found your analysis of Kanami's solo and that it can be thematically assigned so well particularly interesting. And I don't even want to start talking about Saiki's voice. I'm very happy that, even someone who is usually so well focused on the instruments as you are, recognizes and also mentions her part. Not many do that.
    Thank you, for your views and explanations. As always, very interesting to such untrained ears as mine. :)

    IMO, the female equivalent of falsetto is falsetto. However, there are some old-school music folks who insist that it isn't really falsetto, even though it's the exact same mechanism in the singer's body making it happen. Some people who refuse to use "falsetto" when speaking of a female singer will call it "head voice."

    • @JbfMusicGuitar
      @JbfMusicGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Someone else here has said 'second register' which I think is pretty on point. It's interesting because it's a timbre I've never really (knowingly) heard much of from female singers. Apparently it's a less distinctive shift in women than men, but here it does just sounds very much like a textbook 'falsetto'!

    • @saldiven2009
      @saldiven2009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JbfMusicGuitar That lack of distinctive shift (when I was singing solo/choral, my instructors called it the "break") is one of the main reasons that some old-school vocal instructors insist that female singers do not have a falsetto.

    This is one of those where it's worth listening to the studio version as well as different things will stand out to you. The barks on Akane's killer, inventive hi hat groove during the 2nd verse gets a little bit lost in this recording. Even their latest release acoustic "Catharsis" MISA's slide really make the song by adding a little "funk" feel. Totally agree Brian! I kind of want to hear a version of the songs where they don't add in all these little details, just to see how much of a difference they make when all added up. You know like, if she played bass in one position, they kept the parts more static etc. Would be cool just to see how much it all adds up!

    Misa enjoys sliding and uses it a lot, but she also likes to play higher on the neck, and uses her 5-string to its fullest effect by being able to access low root notes while being able to access the high tones to fill some of the space Kanami will frequently vacate to play delicate accent pieces over the top of the melody. Sliding allows her to transition up to that ready hand position.
    Part of band-Maid's unique sound is the use of Misa's bass in the midrange to give the fullness of a second rhythm guitar but with a different sound so that it doesn't compete with Miku's rhythm or get muddled as with two rhythm guitars. This unleashes Kanami to do Kanami things. They very rarely double any parts, which is why in their fantastic live mixes you can hear each instrument distinctly and appreciate what each is doing.
    The composition is also taking advantage of the human brain filling in blanks, so when Misa slides up to the midrange and back down, we still perceive her covering that range. This phenomenon is put to great use in this song with all of the instruments during the quieter verse parts with sparse instrumentation. We perceive the instruments are backing Saiki while they are actually coming in and out playing snippets of the melody. It gives that really cool airy feel and presents a delicate soundscape. If you solo Miku's part during the guitar solo it's bland as paste but it serves the song as the background to Kanami's foreground.

    This is a song that has taken me awhile to fully appreciate but reactions like yours really drive home just how good of a song it is.
    2 things I always look forward to in your reactions is your sense of humor and the number of bands you compare them to. However, this time not a lot of band comparisons but likely due to the uniqueness of the track. However you did work in an Iron Maiden reference which was very impressive given the style of song it is. Bonus points for that.

    Sir.... excuse me but good sir, I must inform you that in your in between segment of "impromptu guitar lesson" and "back to the video" segment you perfectly missed a most incredible drum fill that detonated my 24-years-of-drumming-experience brain all over my car windows when I first heard it, resulting in me having to pull over into a gas station to make sure I heard what I did in fact hear. Akane places this thing perfectly in the absence of other instruments for the first measure of the third chorus........ Kick Kick // Kick Kick // CRASHYFLASHYSHINEYSHINEY BOOM!!! I understand you're a guitar dude but I simply hope and wonder if other people were impressed or even noticed this fill as it is just really truly perfect and I've not heard anything like it executed so well or beautifully within the context of a song. Anyways have a listen to that part of the song and keep making the vids!

      Can't argue with that Simeon! I think I was trying to circle round that it's a texture I've never really knowingly heard, whenever I've gigged/played with Soprano singers they don't seem to have that same sort of tonal shift. But that might be more of a stylistic thing than anything else? I should really just ask them!
