    We did a taste test in Italy, the region of Tuscany, during the carefree travel days....How you described it, is exactly how we approached the tasting and we all had our favorite. Of course we were in the middle of Tuscany, on a warm sunny day, surrounded by olive trees, amazing company, good wine and incredible cheese, so may have influenced our entire tasting experience. Non the less, I don’t view olive oil the same anymore and have found that the Kirkland 100% Italian Extra Virgin, cold extracted olive oil from Costco is quite nice for the price.

    I couple days ago I got a bottle from my friends in Umbria. The oil is green as most olives are. I wish I could take a pix and show it to you. These olives were handpicked, the entire batch was not mixed with any other olives from the region or even from the neighbor's tree, all where taken to a frantoio and cold pressed with a stone wheel! It's so good!

      Redd Green please do your research first. By default, olive oil is non-gmo as no olive varietals exist that are gmo. However, the reason some oils use the label are that enzymes are used during olive milling, and these can be gmo or non-gmo.
      Furthermore, whether you (or the brands) like it or not, some retailers require non-gmo certification regardless of if it’s warranted or not, so some brands will obtain it because they need to in order to access the retailers they want.

    • @reddgreen2630
      @reddgreen2630 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      MasterShake9000 The topic is Virgin Olive Oil, by convention the label Virgin Olive Oil requires that oil is processed from the olive drupes using mechanical processes only with no chemical treatment (where is the enzyme there?). Further, producers pay for the non-GMO label, which is not an insignificant cost, especially for small operations. These costs are passed on to the consumers. I do not dissuade anyone from buying non-GMO, it is their choice, but they should know that there is an extra cost for their choice.

    Watching this a year later, the California Olive Ranch one has been discontinued due to "the state [CA] could not produce enough olives to meet demand" so they get the same style oil from Portugal, Chile, and Argentina and mix that oil with what little they can get from California for a replacement I'm not sure it's Product name from California Olive Ranch, I had Bertolli the 3rd in this segment but now I think they consider it #2 due to some recent quality improvements. This always happens with all products, Beard shavers, Microwaves & washing machines, they make one good run then once people hear about it they switch to lower cost versions and coast on the one good run.

      The Trader Joes extra virgin is the closest thing I have found to what I can get in the Mediterranean countries. That California brand they touted is meh.....Also they criticized oils coming from different countries. Well, Spain produces inexpensive oil, so other countries such as Italy will buy from Spain and bottle it in their own countries. That doesn't mean the quality of the oil is not good, so that guy is wrong about that. Also some oils are really underrated. For example, olive oil from Tunisia which is cheap and flavorful.

Trying to charge the same or more for pooling multiple sources as if that's a benefit to the consumer? From their website it appears they still have the 100% California variety. So either grocery stores are making the switch, or California Olive Ranch is pushing out lower quality purposefully. I verified online at all of our local vendors, Safeway, Whole Foods, QFC, and Fred Meyer. They've all made the switch to the Destination Series. Seems too coordinated to not be coming from California Olive Ranch themselves.

    • @Kamamura2
      @Kamamura2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not even true. In all foods - be it rum, whiskey, olive oil, etc. always ignore the color, because coloring something is the easiest thing to do. The producers often throw leaves and grass into the press to add that "vibrant, green color". That's why they use blue cups. Quality olive oil can be really deeply green when unripe olives are used, but also golden yellow when the olives were ripe.

    Atlas is organic, dated, harvested at a single farm, and from Morocco - it is loaded with polyphenols - it is by far the best. Test Kitchen has the Alas bottle on the table in the background but do not mention it,. You can buy it from Amazon. Also is by far the most expensive ($31 a 750ml. bottle). California is a good brand, real olive oil but is not as tasty and lower in Phenols. We use California or Kirkland oil for cooking and routine stuff, and Atlas for food where raw taste and Phenols matter. Atlas has a much higher Phenol content in several other quantitative reviews. However, Cosco Kirkland also quite high and is lower cost.

What I would like to see is for you guys to do an extensive testing and tasting of highest quality extra virgin olive oil you can find within the United States, and then pick your favorite five of those friends. I'm glad you gave a couple of different options here, but I have heard that Spain also produces excellent quality extra virgin olive oils That are worth considering. The best I can do right now is a little Italian Market near where I live dead cells can olive oil that actually tastes quite good and the price is on the reasonable side. I will definitely try the California Olive Ranch brand and see how I like it. I prefer my olive oil with some serious flavor and a good peppery

      elainemarietta Hellas (Greece) has my favorite olive oils. I had the great pleasure to have wonderful olive groves all around me when I lived and worked in Paleakastro, Crete for several years. Many vineyards too, and up in the lush cooler mountains they grew a lot of avocados. Hellas has a great abundance of wonderful delicious and ancient foods and my favorites are Cretan: pulses (beans), grains, fresh & dried fruit, lots of vegetables, excellent cheeses and yogurt , rustic bread, seafoods, moderate amounts of meats, field gathered herbs and greens (wild greens with little snails on them is well liked... But you just *cannot* live without olives/olive oil and wine!

    I liked the California oil better. I was buying an olive oil in a black bottle with its own pour spout. I happened to be running out of money and bought the California one. Glad I didn’t wait until I had more money.

    Hello. I just went to my Supermarket today and found the recommended California Olive Ranch extra virgin olive oil but it was labeled Destination Series and the label says that it came from four different countries (California, Argentina, Chile and Portugal). There were 4 different varieties including the everyday version). Can you clarify why this information on different from that of the video (the country of origin)?
    Thanks

      Craig Spiegel California used to be single sourced but maybe due to costs changed to destination series which I no longer buy and am still looking for an affordable single sourced brand. Going carnivore I cook more with butter but will use olive oil cold for flavor

      Demand forced them to come out with their blend, Destination. But they still sell several varieties of their purely Calif. oils, Everyday, Arboquina, Arbosana, Robust and 1 or 2 more. Go to their website or to Walmart on-line and order it. You can get single bottles or 6 packs. This seems to be one of the few that can be trusted without it costing an arm & a leg. We know now to always look at the label.

    A couple of years ago now I read a story about olive oil cartels & how they were mixing & adding to cheaper oils & passing them off as pure. The article said that in the supermarket the only 2 brands not involved in this cartel were Californian & Pompeian. I’ve only used these two since although I prefer the Californian in salads or a drizzle...either good for cooking lower temperature foods. Although the claim is that olive oil can cook up to 350, I only use it for lower temps.

    "Our top-ranked supermarket extra-virgin olive oil, California Olive Ranch Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil, has been discontinued and replaced with an imported blend called California Olive Ranch Destination Series Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil. We compared the new and old products in a blind tasting and still recommend the new oil. However, we plan to conduct a new tasting of supermarket extra-virgin olive oil in the coming months."

      They still sell the pure California in several different varieties. I don't think the Destination is the same as the Everyday, which I think is purely Californian. They also have Arboquina, Arbosana, & Robust which are straight Calif. olives. I chatted with the Director of Mkt. at length and she said the reason they went to the Destination for the masses was because of the sheer amount of oil they were selling and had to supplement it to keep up with demand. She seemed to go to great lengths telling me about the olives they get from Argentina, Chile & Portugal and it all makes sense. She sent me some nice coupons and now I'm back to straight Calif. olive oils. I was able to get one of each of their products.
