Ofc, I can't know where you buy the French jam that costs 4X more than regular jam, but I just looked up Bonne Maman at Walmart....a 13oz/370g jar is $5.97. The BM also lists sugar then cane sugar---13g is a lot for a 20g portion. My breakfast is typically several slices of wholegrain toast with coffee and 52+ grams of sugar for one meal is too much for me. I've had to stop buying fruit spreads of all types unless they're sugar free or make a jar's worth at home with an alternative sweetener. I think our preferences are being dictated by the fruit's quality and ripeness rather than the sugar content---which seems to be just about the same across these brands.

Really surprised, maybe a cultural thing but even with it being French (as a Brit, they have to overcome an immediate point against just for that reason) but Bonne Maman is far and away the best supermarket jam type product. I’ve tried them all living in the US (products shown in video), Smucker’s is acceptable as a Denny’s level stand-in but for home I would never choose it’s inoffensive & incredibly sweet flavor. I love atk, but I have to respectfully disagree on this one, Bonne Maman walks away with the win in this category.

@@jintzie1950jth It is very simple. Fresh fruit is mashed, sugar added, and pectin. You can find recipes online, or Sur-Jell puts recipes on their pectin. They actually market a different style just for freezer jams. After the pectin and sugar are mixed in the crushed fruit, it is poured into freezer containers and stands on the counter for overnight, covered, finally to be frozen. Keeps in the freezer for months, and in the fridge for weeks. Makes wonderful topping for toast, cheesecake, pound cake, etc.

Movenpick brand has the BEST jams -- strawberry, blueberry, black current, marmalade. Outstanding.

This is one of the few taste tests that contains at least a few products that are also available here in Canada. I've purchased Smuckers and find it a very good product, but my choice here in Canada is either Kraft strawberry jam or, surprisingly, the IGA/Sobey's own store brand which I find to be excellent and contains no preservatives or other additives. All the Bonne Mama products I've tried have also been excellent, if more expensive than most others.

The very best in 🇨🇦: Greaves, made in Niagara-on-the-Lake. We used to live there in a house built in 1817. When they made strawberry jam the whole town smelled sweet. They also make fabulous chili sauce from local produce. The aroma was heavenly. Sadly, the town is now a tacky tourist trap 😢.

I've taken to buying sugar free fruit spreads---which have a somewhat gelatinous texture---or cooking a small jar's worth of berry preserves with chia seeds, pectin and an alternative sweetener. Regardless of the common sugar types used, store selections are all over sweetenered in my opinion. I bought Crofters blackberry jam and decided I could do better with my own homemade version--and I did.

The TH-cam winner is clearly Bonne Maman! LOL! I was rather surprised to know that it's not actually an "boutique" brand but available essentially everywhere alongside Smuckers and Knott's. I've tried almost every flavor of Bonne Maman and have been impressed, although I think their lemon curd could be better. For my money, it's Trader Joe's for when I want lemon curd on my crumpets!
But, Bonne Maman's also has those lovely jars that have so much utility!

Reading the fan comment about Bonne Maman here reminds me of those famous marketing surveys of car buyers, i.e. luxury car owners (say BMW or Mercedes) insisting that they bought their car for their quality of worksmanship and reliability. Why they picked the Smucker's, because it was a blind test. The testers didn't see the nice container with the handwritten style label, a name that reminds you of granny from France. Those things do matter to your enjoyment of the jam. Otherwise Bonne Maman wouldn't have spent all that money to get it right.

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Smucker's : Strawberries, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Sugar, Fruit Pectin, Citric Acid.
Bonne maman: Strawberries, Sugar, Cane Sugar, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Fruit Pectin.
people in america are used to very sweet flavor for the jam. Bonne maman has more acidity so it was rated lower.

I have never liked super sweet jams/spreads/jellies. I have not been a Smuckers fan since I was a little kid (that was the brand my mom bought). I agree with many commenters here that Bonne Maman is far and above Smuckers. One of my critiques of ATK is they love their salt and sugar far more than I do. When using their recipes, I cut back on both of these items, especially salt as folks can salt after the dish is done to suit their own tastes.
