Olive oil should be used in the first year after pressing. The taste varies depending on weather conditions and the time the olives have been harvested. Some places harvest them very early and the olives and oil are green, the taste is fruity with a "bite" in the throat and the acidity low. That is the best oil for health. Other places prefer to let the olives mature and they turn to light brown and the oil is yellow and more sweet with higher acidity. Acidity should be written on the bottle and should not be more than 1% for extra virgin and it depends on the weather through the whole year and the time of harvesting. Oil from hills and mountains is in general of superior quality than that from valleys. Extra virgin oil is sometimes mixed with cheap refined olive oil that still freezes so the freezer test is not that accurate. Never buy in plastic bottles, metal also not that good
@@ananke2104 You can not test it at home unfortunately. You need to send a sample to a lab. Even producers have to send a sample to determine the acidity of the production. Still acidity is not the only factor for quality but it is important that it is low for health. The best judge for quality at home is taste, but you need to develop it by using high quality from a local producer that you know and trust. The very best is light green and cloudy with a very fruity taste and low acidity. After three months of the pressing date the particles of the olives that make it cloudy are settling to the bottom and are oxidised and that rises acidity too.
@@christy7344 I do not live in the US, I would not know. But even in countries that produce lots of good olive oil like Spain and Italy, nothing in the supermarket comes even close to what you can get from a local producer who produce first and formost for their own families. Try to get local oils if you can
Good job, doctor! As an olive oil producer, I will just add a few info. The “refrigerator” test is not always accurate, but if you want to do this test on extra virgin olive oil, do it in small quantities. Not all over the bottle because the bonds of fatty and phenolic substances break down during thawing, resulting in a lower quality oil. The optimal extra virgin olive oil storage is between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius. It is essential to underline that once the bottle is opened, it must be consumed within approximately 15 days. Extra virgin olive oil fears both exposure to air and light.

I'm 73. Every morning I eat a huge family size salad with about 20 vegetables with Organic extra virgin olive oil and organic apple cider vinegar with my own blend of spices that I put together. Last time I had a health checkup was in the 1970s. I exercise regularly but moderately without overdoing it. I'm a cyclist I don't have a car so that keeps me in shape and I spent most of my life as a carpenter. I'm the same weight now that I was in my twenties. I don't even bother to renew my health card cuz I've never really used it.
I get Spanish olive oil from Costco. I like the flavor and the 'bite' it has. I figured that a company like Costco wouldn't want to damage their reputation by selling fake olive oil.
We make our own Olive Oil and we do it by Cold Press. To test Pure Olive Oil without testing the whole bottle etc - Take a clean glass container pour in a few tablespoons or more of olive oil cover with a lid and refrigerate for at least a day or overnight. If the oil solidifies it shows that the oil has monounsaturated pure olive oil whereas adulterated or fake olive oil will not change its texture on refrigerating.
I have been using Simply Nature brand organic evoo sold by Aldi, from Tunisia. it passes all the tests, has an expiration date and a certification #. It is however pretty cheap, six dollars for a 16.9 oz bottle. One benefit I've experienced after taking 2 tablespoons before going to bed, is a great nights sleep, hoping that over the long term it will help my arthritis.

Thanks for that advice! I use Mena olive oil. It is single source & has on bottle where in the orchard the oil came from, & of course the expiry date. I'd never before had the slight peppery taste @ back of throat before, before tasting Mena. Don't let the description of the pepper taste put you off as it is only slight & when you cook with it, that peppery taste is not present, so don't let that put you off. The only thing I DO NOT like is that it is sold in plastic bottles. I think that's how they keep their costs down...& of course less breakage possibilities in shipping because Mena olive oil comes from the Motherland, primo land of Morrocco! That's what I hear is the best place to get your olive oil. According to Dr. Gundry Moroccan olive oil has the high levels of that ingredient (can't remember what it's called, but Moroccan olive oil has the highest levels out there)...but what led me to Mena olive oil was because I COULDN'T AFFORD Dr. Gundry's olive oil. “... Virgin olive oils are produced using physical methods only - usually spinning in a centrifuge or squeezing in a press. They tasted smooth ,no peppery taste at all. Taking 2 spoons in the morning is something easy now.
Absolutely, I buy a Greek, organic evoo, that is made from unripe green olives, unfiltered, cold, first press, smooth creamy texture, not bitter or peppery, in a dark green glass bottle, the best I've had in my life, it's $45 for a 16oz bottle, worth every penny, Koroneiki olive variety, the variety of olives also determines whether an oil is bitter or peppery. As a rule of thumb, don’t buy any olive oil that doesn’t have an expiration date. When you find one that has it, be sure it is good at least for more than one year from the date you purchase it. European Olive Oils also can be labeled DOP (red sticker) or IGP (blue sticker) and these labels are given only to high quality olive oils. Some of the red sticker oils (DOP) also have the “vintage” printed on the label. As of now (9/23) look for 2022 harvest, since 2023 harvest is just happening now. Last thing: when you buy good olive oil, use it! Don’t keep it open for months. Open it and use it in a couple of weeks max. It starts to degrade immediately after pressing, if you expose it to oxidation it won’t last more than two weeks tops.
@@kirstenmassa4110 expiration date tells you at least when it was bottled. I get it that it means nothing but in absence of any other indicator about when it started its life, at least it gives you that.
@@kirstenmassa4110 since the maximum is two years, if you see a bottle with 2025 expiration date, it means it was bottled in 2023 which in turns it tells you that at best it could be a 2022 harvest. The day that, whoever sets the rules, does it with the consumer in mind, it will be different. Now that the rules are made by corporations, we have to help ourselves with reference points.
I have never gotten really good olive oil since I lived in Sicily. I would watch the people knock the olives off the trees with a pole. I would get some of the first press from my landlord. It was peppery and grassy tasting, just amazing.

There is nothing wrong with buying the product in a can. The can keeps all the light out, so it is safe. Some of the best Virgin Olive Oils are sold in a can-container.
Also , putting into a glass with water and a few pieces of ice the diluted oils will break up into their constituent oils . You'll be able to see and taste the difference.
Olives need to be pressed within 6 hours of harvest. 1st cold pressed date on bottle. A blend of olive oils from different countries can be very deceiving in that you have no idea when they were harvested or pressed, shipped, handled etc. Great olive oil comes from harvesting and pressing quickly by responsible, ethical producers. They're out there. Trouble is finding and trusting their claims of producing a pure unadulterated product in this day and age can be a real challenge, especially with not much help from regulatory bodies........
After reading a good book about EVOO a few year ago, I decided then to only purchase brands that have a DATE stamped on bottle, either best by, OR date it was bottled, which is preferred, but much harder to find ! Good Luck.

Good job, doctor! As an olive oil producer, I will just add a few info.
The title came across my feed,
And I’m delighted to find a way to find out, if I’m getting what I’m supposed to get.

Really after researches me, family and friend found the benefits of this golden oil after one year of diet based on extra virgin early harvest, cold pressed olive oil.
4:00 The label may say Extra Virgin but the ingredients will say “a blend of” olive oil. So they are taking about percentage of extra virgin versus percentage of chemically extracted oil.
I can tell Mena olive oil is quality, but yet AFFORDABLE. I was ordering Mena online, but I about fell out when I saw it @ Publix grocery store. That's where I get it now, & it's very affordable.
It’s not Mena but rather instead it’s called Mina Moroccan extra virgin olive oil, cold extraction, single origin.

The California EVOO is good olive oil. Put it in the fridge and it solidified and became cloudy. Sams Club used to carry this brand, but they don't anymore.
Thanks Dr. Mandell! My favorite olive oil 🫒 is california Ranch, but I've also had great luck and flavor with an olive 🫒 oil from Costco labeled Kirkland 100% california extra virgin o.o., going for $10.99 per 33.8 Oz/1-liter. The grocer told us that Pomace was better for cooking and extra virgin was good for salads, etc. Could you, please tell me what is the difference? Both are of the same make and imported. Thanks for all the info/ trouble you go through for your viewers. Highly appreciated.
“... Virgin olive oils are produced using physical methods only - usually spinning in a centrifuge or squeezing in a press. There's nothing added in the process and no chemicals are used to draw the oil out. Olive Pomace Oil, in comparison, uses a solvent, typically hexane, to draw the oil out of the dry pomace". (Google)
Pomace is also the residue from the first pressing.
Do not buy pomace oil. It is garbagge
Never use pomace / you may search about it and you will notice how harmful it is for your health. Extra virgin olive oil can be used for cooking and also law temp frying.

You should also buy EVOO from a single source. In California we have it made with a huge olive oil industry and buying 100% California grown and pressed is easy. Plus living close to the source and the fact California(at least my source of OO)places the squeeze date so you can buy it as fresh as possible, which is also important.
Olive oil is mooth and sweet from the ripe olives picked right after they fall of the trees. I am in the olive country on th coast of Adriatic. The peppering taste us when olives sit in the bags and get inflamed and spoiled.
Do you know your explanation goes against all these youtube experts'?🤔
I was wondering also why many experts said good EV olive oil should taste peppery.I bought EVOO many bottles in Thailand..they all tasted peppery .I hated the taste. But I came to San Benedetto,Adriatic part in Italy and have bought Bio Extravergine olive oil many bottles already .

I think some peopl are confused about the "refrigerator" test, not freezer. The Dr saysgood evoo should thicken with possibly a little cloudiness at the bottom. Also I use my Evoo to Saute green veggies over a low flame, asparagus, broccoli and string beans. Delicious!

Actually expiration date means nothing. Harvest date tells you how fresh your oil is. It should be consumed within 1 year, ideally 6 months.
@@kirstenmassa4110 expiration date tells you at least when it was bottled. I get it that it means nothing but in absence of any other indicator about when it started its life, at least it gives you that.
@@riccardob7774 how do you know when it’s bottled from expiration date
@@kirstenmassa4110 since the maximum is two years, if you see a bottle with 2025 expiration date, it means it was bottled in 2023 which in turns it tells you that at best it could be a 2022 harvest. But it is not a precise date. it’s just a reference point. Higher quality/higher price also is not always true, just a reference point. The day that, whoever sets the rules, does it with the consumer in mind, it will be different. Now that the rules are made by corporations, we have to help ourselves with reference points.

There is nothing wrong with buying the product in a can. The can keeps all the light out, so it is safe. Some of the best Virgin Olive Oils are sold in a can-container.
Great information. Thank you for sharing this! God bless.
Good Luck.
