+Buggy D. Clown Netero mentioned Meruem is a hybrid (like most Chimera Ants) and there is a chance he will either be a pure Chimera Ant or a human (in essence) but if he lingers in between for too long he will become very dangerous so they planned to kill Meruem. When they've reached the castle both Netero and Silva were shocked to see Meruem's human side (it's easier to kill a mindless Chimera Ant which they have expected). Anyway, this is my top arc in any anime/manga I've seen.
Buggy D. Clown Your biased and worthless opinion to begin with don't even pass the credibility phase before getting destroyed, in a story of not-good and bad extremes (''were the worst'' sinks in deep ocean already) that concern even changes, humans are the complete (I could stop already) evil ones? 0 Sense. Great, another one who caught the messages and the themes of the series.
end of the arc: "Do you forgive Meruem yet?" His foil with Gon was the perfect arc. Gon grew up valuing life over _everything._ To the point that having to come to terms with the fact that his dear friend died a horrible, awful death, he gave up his humanity and became an unstoppable killer, filled with nothing but violence. As opposed to Meruem, who had no respect for anything but himself: Not even his family. But through a gentle soul, he learned to regret his violence and appreciate the value in life and the real meaning of strength.
@Max -x I mean it's not exclusively right or wrong people mean when talking about gon that way. He was willing to change in pretty drastic ways for his revenge like pushing his friends away, threatening komugi, and even putting his life on the line. Completely different from the gon before kites death.
@Max -x that's my point gon wasnt evil but going down a dark path. Meruem wasn't really a psychopath more like a sociopath since he didn't really feel empathy or anything like that acting mostly out of instinct at first. Then he started to care more for individual beings, he wasn't good either since he still wanted to keep humans as livestock but yea.
@Max -x Quite the opposite of what you're claiming happened. This story follows logic that villains aren't one-dimensional beings who are evil for the sake of being evil. You're trying too hard to justify your hatred by dismissing the characters' reasoning.
@Max -x maybe watch the arc again once you're a little bit older. I think you're too young to really understanf exactly what happened. If anything, by the end of the arc, Gon and Netero are more evil than Meruem and Pitou. Youpi was never truly evil and literally the only evil ant (of importance) was Pouf. Sure, Zazan, the ant that shot Ponzu and the centaur-ant Kite killed were evil too. Which is why I said of importance.
I really like how the author make the ants. They first behave like animals relying purely on instincts and hierarchy but as the show progresses, they lean more on the humane side. Whereas the humans who are proclaimed as saviours slowly resemble and behave more and more as monsters
A contrast shown in this masterpiece of an anime that blows my mind is that how the main protagonist slowly looses his humanity and how the main antagonist (of this arc atleast) slowly becomes a human
Pretentious bullshit. Gon never lost his humanity. Grief and rightful vengeance for the loved ones, the merciless destruction of evil-doers is essentially human.
@@polanre8704 gon was psycho from the start at times he is selfish and hypocritical. Gon at first glance looks your typical shonen mc but he is actually alot darker. Meanwhile killua is seen as the dark one but that becuase of assassin upbringing Killiua is actually more softer hearted than gon.

My lil brother was watching HunterxHunter about a year ago and this scene was my first time seeing the anime, wanted to watch it and so after all these months I finally started watching and finally watching this scene I had a smile across my face. I love HxH and I’m enjoying how dark this arc is
He kinda mentioned it. When he attacked that palace and killed that fat king, the women there asked him to spare them. He said when a cow or a pig ask you to spare their lives, you don’t do it.
He killed the family for food, just like we kill cows and pigs for food. That is why he brought up humans killing cows and pigs in the palace... He was saying that he was justified in killing them for food, just like humans are justified in killing cows and pigs for food. And Meruem is absolutely right in his reasoning.
The reason why meruem is perfect is not because he‘s super powerful but because he developed from an apathetic animal into a empathetic human within a day. Which some people struggle with even after 5000 years of civilization.
This entire fucking scene compared to the last 10 minutes of episode 135 is literally why I'll always say this show is peak fiction. Meruem's character development and parallels to Gon are insane, I can go on about them forever.
@@thelosttomato4020 ik year old, but wanted to say that while physically nanika could easily be killed, keep in mind she's supposedly a mythical nen creature from the DC, and would probably turn into like a spirit form or something after alluka's death and would in all likelihood, easily kill Meruem with her powers shortly after death.
@@badtimeisinevitable9620 i dont really get undertale tbh , when i played it , most of the monsters i met attacked me , literally trying to kill me repeatedly , and i actually died plenty of times , then i end up killing some of them because fuck it , when ure not attacking , but someone beat u till the point ure almost-dead , its natural for you to fight back . but in the end the game making up shit and sans told me im guilty , what the fuck ?
I initially hated this arc because of the power scaling and some random chimera ants taking down hunters like insects. But when the Meruem died from radiation it was one of the most unique ending in anime instead of the typical power up and beat this guy and I loved it.
I think of this arc differently because everyone was forced to face a fow whose strength outweighs anything capable by humans. So they are forced to fight a game of endurance while Netero sacrifice himself to save humanity.
This is the kind of ''censorship'' that works well. Although you don't see the tail pierce through her body like in the manga, quickly hearing the thrust of the tail and immediately moving away proved to be more effective and have more impact, at least imo..
As much as I don’t like people getting killed(obviously) I like how they show what will obviously happen instead of something miraculous happening because of the plot armor
The way they show this so casually, with a relaxed nd curious expression on them, like it's just a normal stroll on a random day makes it feel 10x more darker than it'd be if there were people screaming their lungs out along with villainous music nd expressions.
It's a pity he didn't have a more miserable death, but I suppose losing something he truly valued in komugi, was a punishing thing in itself. This arc was definitely one of the darkest in anime, probably up there with Berserk. Honestly I'd have wanted adult Gon to fight Mereum, that would have been such an amazing fight.
@@kamenrideroblivion2667 no, because gon was a being of pure violence and revenge, and by that point, Mereum was not, as Netero said, humanity has an endless well of malice, the Ants didn't stand a chance, as shown by Gon giving up his entire life for petty, quit revenge, and Netero nuking himself and Mereum out of spite.
What a POS. I will DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY, CERTAINLY, SURELY, OBVIOUSLY, WITHOUT A QUESTION, will not be sad, or cry until my eyes are red, and come back every once in a while to remind myself of how good his character was.
Meruem is probably the kindest character of all time. Despite being born a monster and to have no compassion to humans, he discovered peace and morality all on his own. Even when he’s the most powerful being and the future of his own species, he gave it up because he knew what he was doing was wrong. I can’t think of anyone fictional or in my own life who would sacrifice that much and turn out good when you were born to be bad. Amazing character
@@denzilhalliday1975 Obito was one of the worst written characters I've seen lol. Him and Sasuke had no consistency whatsoever to their characterisation. Zabuza was a better villain and he was relevant for like 5 chapters.
At this part of the arc before nefpherpito met kite honestly no anime made me really invested into the series like this before I really liked hunter hunter I wish their was a another season tho
I think people forget that originally they were ants and ants dont have a conscience. You combine that with the human ego and you get psychopaths. They cant really help how they were programmed from birth. But ultimately the animalistic side proved to pale in comparison to the human ego and passion. It was only a matter of time for that dynamic to fall apart. Really it showed to be a kind of shackle on the spirit but even genetic shackles can only hold you back so much as you let it
Yeah it’s like if u took a tiger and put it around children if u think about it’s ngl fault the country should already have strong hunters inside to protect the country
I feel like Gon and Killua never really got the gist of just how cruel the chimera ants were and that's sad imo, because this kid for example is just a few years younger than them and I'd like to have seen them react to this
I know meruem is supposed to be like this and a lot of people think he’s very well written, but honestly he just seems like a spoiled kid to me who was born with power. He becomes a lot better when netero humbles him.
Yes he literally is a spoiled baby who was born into power. And he learns how to become human despite that. That's the point. That's his character arc.
Oddly enough, I don't hate Meruem. It really does seem like even from the beginning, he was just trying to understand the world. He didn't outright hate humanity, but he was disgusted by the human way of life. He detested "false" rulers and the idea of unworthy leadership by weak, corrupt, ineffective humans. Arguably, he just hates weak people in general. Not necessarily because of their inability to fight, but he seems to think that fighting is something that should be a normal part of life. Notice how he reacted when he killed them. "What? They didn't even put up a fight." Meruem seems to expect people to always be on their guard, which is further supported when he first meets Komugi. Meruem definitely starts out as a very evil and heartless villain because his first real experience with humanity is treating us as "food". I mean, humans don't exactly have a lot of remorse or pity for the creatures we slaughter, so it's a relatively understandable position. What changes is when he starts to come across humans he is forced to acknowledge on an intellectual level. Komugi taught him a lot about how a person can seem very weak but can have an inner gift that shines in unexpected ways. Meruem even seems to express regret, humility, and outright humanity close to the end of the Chimera Ant arc. I freaking love this character.
Are you kidding? At their final moments with Komugi, i cried for a whole 40 minutes. Non stop. Generally, having an evil character show emotion , is the most devastating thing for my soul. That's why the scene where Killua hugged Nanika cause he realised that she wanted to be loved, was also heartbreaking. Not on the Komugi-Meruem level tho :')
I think entirely differently. I don't see his initial charachter as evil. He's just a animal following his instincts. We perceive it as evil because he's the enemy of the humans but they might aswell see us as evil because we're the enemies of them. It's just species vs species. Survival of the fittest
He didn't do anything wrong i mean when humans are killing so many tress, chickens, goat, and all other animals and eating them after cooking, do we then think about the kids of the dead parents or we just say 'delicous!' and when other creatures kill human for food suddenly that's wrong i don't get it.... We kill, eat everything and destroy each other and destroying the earth as well like it or not we are true monsters
Despite Meruem's mature appearance he is inside a just-born baby. He has no sense of good and evil, just pure curiosity(which can be deadly with his supreme strength) about all the things around him.
I personally think that way because over the arc he sees an incredible amount of character development thru his relationship with Komugi, learning about the value of life and kindness, as well as the fact that pure strength isn’t going to always be the answer. That + his juxtaposition with Gon’s own development (since Meruem gained humanity while the latter became more of a monster) is why Meruem is such a fascinating character
when I' saw this I was like " hopefully he is going to suffer for what he done and getting a pain and agonizing death" and then in the end I really felt bad for him this is a proof that meruem has a really good Character development
He 'met' ALOT of people and none of them (except Komugi) survived. When Meruem died, i was sad, because even though he was an antagonist, i liked him, and for me, he was the best antagonist of all time.
The massacre of kurta clan is more monstrous... Meruem wasnt human to begin with...but phantom troupe killed the curta clan(including children) out of greed
We forget the atrocities Mereum committed by the end of this arc and almost start hating Netero for poisoning him. The storytelling was simply fantastic because the end of the arc made me shed tears for the death of a murderer.
Yeah, he's detestable but only because we identify with the human victims and see Meruem and the royal guard for the monsters they are . Those "Ants" really do see themselves as above those humans, this was just a visits to a feed lot or a hunt. Not that it absolves him but Meruem slowly realizes that humans actually can be on par with them. Hunter hunter is not so much about good vs evil as it's alien terrible vs relatable terrible or our terrible vs your terrible.

then save Komugi, regreting again
what a king he was
The point of that arc is to show a monster become more human like, and the opposite, a human becoming a monster.
Did u mean gon and meruem?
+Prince John, hai!
0 Sense.
Great, another one who caught the messages and the themes of the series.
end of the arc: "Do you forgive Meruem yet?"
His foil with Gon was the perfect arc.
You're trying too hard to justify your hatred by dismissing the characters' reasoning.
susuusus
That is why Netero was wrong. The ants have the same potential of malice as humans, because their souls are human.

The fuck this arc was by far the most controversial arc in the series (and in my opinion one of the worse one)
Meruem: "Humans are monsters who cause war and pain."
Also Meruem: "DIE, INNOCENT FAMILY WHO DID NOTHING WRONG! DIE!"
He never said something like that tho
He kinda mentioned it. When he attacked that palace and killed that fat king, the women there asked him to spare them. He said when a cow or a pig ask you to spare their lives, you don’t do it.
Wait Animals can’t talk
He killed the family for food, just like we kill cows and pigs for food. That is why he brought up humans killing cows and pigs in the palace...
He was saying that he was justified in killing them for food, just like humans are justified in killing cows and pigs for food. And Meruem is absolutely right in his reasoning.

This guy had some beautiful development by the end of the arc.

They grow up so fast…meruem not the girl. She done growing
"that first ark was so wholesome, I wonder what happens next"
As much as I don’t like people getting killed(obviously) I like how they show what will obviously happen instead of something miraculous happening because of the plot armor
Yup, I like when shows don't overly restrain themselves from killing, be it main characters, side characters, or antagonists
The way they show this so casually, with a relaxed nd curious expression on them, like it's just a normal stroll on a random day makes it feel 10x more darker than it'd be if there were people screaming their lungs out along with villainous music nd expressions.
At that time, Meruem isn't mature enough to understand emotions. He is literally just a few hours old at that time.

Meruem is probably the kindest character of all time. Despite being born a monster and to have no compassion to humans, he discovered peace and morality all on his own. Even when he’s the most powerful being and the future of his own species, he gave it up because he knew what he was doing was wrong.

"Humbles" is a nice way to say "gives radiation poisoning"
Yes he literally is a spoiled baby who was born into power. And he learns how to become human despite that. That's the point. That's his character arc.
So..."damn nature u scary"?:))
HOLY SHIT THAT MADE MY DAY
Oddly enough, I don't hate Meruem.
Cool story still murder.
@@amon8977 Nope it ain't, survival of the fittest as you humans would say.
I think entirely differently. I don't see his initial charachter as evil. He's just a animal following his instincts. We perceive it as evil because he's the enemy of the humans but they might aswell see us as evil because we're the enemies of them. It's just species vs species. Survival of the fittest
Gon wasn't the main character in this arc, Meruem was all along.
If i could grant pain and suffering it would be upon those monsters.
He didn't do anything wrong i mean when humans are killing so many tress, chickens, goat, and all other animals and eating them after cooking, do we then think about the kids of the dead parents or we just say 'delicous!' and when other creatures kill human for food suddenly that's wrong i don't get it....
