The Queen didn't do anything notably wrong. She had the least amount of knowledge about humans and just did what she could to reproduce. Up to this point in the story (before redemption arcs) she's the most moral ant because all the others were part human and knew of their sentience

That was the main theme of HxH CH it was to subvert your perspective like ok they're chimera ants eating humans well they're obviously bad? well maybe not? maybe not so different from us. when we got to the end the lines of good and bad were so blurred you could easily have considered Netero and the hunter association the bad guys, instead of the stereotypical heroes. This is why HxH is so Incredible. Also on a sidenote Knuckle is an absolute sweetheart, and really hammers home this theme of seeing your enemies perspective.

Ironically, it is the name alone that sealed Meruem's fate. If the ant queen didn't gave the King a name, it wouldn't have lead to Meruem's downfall. The moment Meruem agreed to a duel with Netero away from the palace, it was over. Like Meruem said, Netero had him checked mated from the start because of the rose bomb.
Nah, it was shown in the fight Netero is a tricky one and doesnt take as much honor in battle as for example someone like Youpi. Even if the queen hadnt named Meruem, Netero could have always just lied to convince meruem to fight.

Its not really difficult. A sentient creature should never treat another sentient creature as their food. If a chicken starts talking like what we see in childrens show then it automatically makes eating chicken immoral. Theres also something we call "natural enemy" Natural enemies means that even though were both sentient creature, we cant co-exist. Perfect example of this is lawlessness vs modern society or sentient cancer cells vs us.
They specifically were hunting the stronger hunters because their brains tasted better which is already pretty fucked up but add the fact that they found the screams of their victims amusing. There's no way you can justify what the chimera ants did.

I have yet to read or watch the series, its on my to do list, but damn does the vocal performance for this is incredible! Major props to the voice actress of the Ant Queen!

That’s the whole point of the arc, I’m surprised you missed it since it’s the biggest theme out of the numerous ones portrayed. The whole point of the arc is humanising evil, showing how it is bred and manifests, the contrast between gon and meruem literally highlight it perfectly, meruem is someone you loathe at the start of the arc and miss at the end, you start to feel empathy for him and his species, gon however is the opposite. We start the arc by wanting to avenge kite but as the opportunity presents itself it becomes much darker then we imagined, we go from rooting for gon to fearing him/for him towards the end, the polar opposite of how both characters started and how both end, it’s amazing story telling. Scenes like this are just smaller examples which build the world and theme for the arc, the octopuss. Wolf, royal guard and palm are also perfect examples of this not to mention the corrupt world leaders. You should pity this ant otherwise you are more similar then you would imagine
The queen is not evil for what she did. She ate humans and children just like how humans eat pretty much everything else on the food chain and their children. And, just like humans, what she did was for the evolution of her race to give birth to a strong king. She should not be considered evil just because she was aware or ate humans. It's funny how no one looks at all the other animals that she ate, but they start to call her evil when she starts eating human children.

This whole arc was so good. The fact they managed to get some sadness from me for a creature responsible for the deaths of numerous people, that is some good writing. My two cents on the issue. The Chimera Ants were taught from birth to hunt and kill humans. They knew nothing else. I judge them from whether they're willing to change after being confronted with the morality of that. These ants were created in large part from the humans that died as prey for them. And many still possess their personalities and memories from when they were human. So I give them sympathy in that regard.
While I don’t fully feel sorry for the Queen (because she DID eat a lot of humans), I feel kinda bad for her. Her instinct was to give birth to the King, and that’s what she did. It’s not like she could really help herself. It was in her nature. So there was no other way she could’ve gone on living except giving birth to Meruem. I know this won’t change anyone’s opinion, especially the aggressive ones where they said they’re glad she died or that she deserved a shitty death. That’s their opinion, albeit a rather harsh one. After all, the Chimera Ant Queen only lived to serve her true purpose, even if it potentially risked the human race going extinct. But I think it’s more heartbreaking for Colt because he’s loyal to her (he was the first talking Chimera Ant after all). I’m glad that he’s one of the good Chimera Ants, by which I mean the ones who align themselves with empathy. I also like these varying opinions on this scene. This anime really gets you to think about how there’s no such thing as good or evil in this anime. Only those who do as they please, whether or not it is detrimental those around them.
I think maybe I have some understanding of why the Chimera Ant arc is so widely praised in HxH. You *RARELY* get to see a scene like this in any other anime (or even a show in any other medium) that briefly shows two sides in a global life-or-death conflict cooperating in an attempt to save the now-defunct Big Bad. Can you name another series that's done something like this? I don't think I can, no wonder I was absolutely floored when I first saw this scene. Not only that, but this scene in particular manages to provoke some kind of emotion within you, even though you're absolutely aware it's coming from the villains' side, not the heroes'. I agree with folks in the comments, the Ant Queen's death doesn't excuse her heinous crimes, but I don't think Togashi intended on portraying her sympathetically just for the sake of making us sympathize with her. Moral ambiguity and grey morality have always been the core themes of HxH, and the Chimera Ant arc in particular shows how the monsters we identify can act very human just as much as we can, whether it'd be pursuing their own goals or mourning the loss of a loved one, especially in the case of Colt. I don't excuse him for carrying out the Queen's orders, but holy crap am I finding myself invested in him because he's just too damn compelling and complex to write him off as a typical villain. And I give props to Togashi for that.

The chimera ant were leaving on instinct but slowly they developed there emotion and felt the necessity of unity to copy the humans emotional intelligence which made theme able to understand what they truly are and what reason is behind there instinct yet the queen reminded on her instincts till her last moments which made think it is a waist for the invader who came of a far way land to end in such phase of development and she was more developed than carnivores being able to fell humans are more nurturing than other spices which made me think that the spice which she made was actually more developed than her

This whole show is nothing but moral questions and LGBT+ subtexts (no debate on this; there's literally articles on this at this point). From the Chimera Ants, to the Phantom Troupe? You realize that the nature vs nuture theme comes into play once more. It was in the queen's nature to reproduce and achieve one goal; protect and love her son, and those that would come after him if she had completely succeeded in her plans. She was cruel, and disregarding of other species that weren't ants, but she didn't do it just out of eagerness. She did it all for her child. Definetely a character that can be a challenge to hate if you really dig deep into the question of morality. A lot of moments in this show are rough to swallow. Def isn't your average shounen anime where protag will just wins it all and everything is just black and white.
Yeah, lots of debate here whether the ant queen is evil or not. Well, for me it all boils down to nature. In this anime's universe, the chimera ant race are wired differently from humans. They don't have the same nature. Nature is not evil, it is the way it is. When the royal guards fed themselves to a dying meruem, they couldn't have been more happy. That's the purest form of love, unconditional. They are wired like that. Palm cried when meruem was about to kneel to her. He was her enemy, but she is part ant and her nature still tella her that the king is the most important being of their race. Humans don't eat humans not because we are not evil. It's because that is out nature. We have sympathy, we are conscious because that is our nature. The concept of good and evil is subjective and it is only to us humans. But when it comes to nature, it is what it is.

Because she was just an animal eating to survive, and at this point in Meruem's character arc, was the lesser of two evils. The Ants were originally supposed to just feed humans to her, not torture them and kill for fun. Colt and the Ants who stayed with the queen were just following orders and had no reason to kill humans once the queen was finished.
She was just trying to survive to keep her species going. The same thing humans have done for millennia. The difference is that humans now continue to do it out of hunger for food, rather than survival. Just think about how much meat is thrown away.

That’s the whole point of the arc, I’m surprised you missed it since it’s the biggest theme out of the numerous ones portrayed. The whole point of the arc is humanising evil, showing how it is bred and manifests, the contrast between gon and meruem literally highlight it perfectly, meruem is someone you loathe at the start of the arc and miss at the end, you start to feel empathy for him and his species, gon however is the opposite. We start the arc by wanting to avenge kite but as the opportunity presents itself it becomes much darker then we imagined, we go from rooting for gon to fearing him/for him towards the end, the polar opposite of how both characters started and how both end, it’s amazing story telling. Scenes like this are just smaller examples which build the world and theme for the arc, the octopuss. Wolf, royal guard and palm are also perfect examples of this not to mention the corrupt world leaders. You should pity this ant otherwise you are more similar then you would imagine

The queen is not evil for what she did. She ate humans and children just like how humans eat pretty much everything else on the food chain and their children. This whole arc was so good. The fact they managed to get some sadness from me for a creature responsible for the deaths of numerous people, that is some good writing. My two cents on the issue. The Chimera Ants were taught from birth to hunt and kill humans. They knew nothing else. I judge them from whether they're willing to change after being confronted with the morality of that. These ants were created in large part from the humans that died as prey for them. And many still possess their personalities and memories from when they were human. So I give them sympathy in that regard.

While I don’t fully feel sorry for the Queen (because she DID eat a lot of humans), I feel kinda bad for her. Her instinct was to give birth to the King, and that’s what she did. It’s not like she could really help herself. It was in her nature. So there was no other way she could’ve gone on living except giving birth to Meruem. I know this won’t change anyone’s opinion, especially the aggressive ones where they said they’re glad she died or that she deserved a shitty death. That’s their opinion, albeit a rather harsh one. After all, the Chimera Ant Queen only lived to serve her true purpose, even if it potentially risked the human race going extinct.
But I think it’s more heartbreaking for Colt because he’s loyal to her (he was the first talking Chimera Ant after all). I’m glad that he’s one of the good Chimera Ants, by which I mean the ones who align themselves with empathy. I also like these varying opinions on this scene. This anime really gets you to think about how there’s no such thing as good or evil in this anime. Only those who do as they please, whether or not it is detrimental those around them.

You *RARELY* get to see a scene like this in any other anime (or even a show in any other medium) that briefly shows two sides in a global life-or-death conflict cooperating in an attempt to save the now-defunct Big Bad. Can you name another series that's done something like this? I don't think I can, no wonder I was absolutely floored when I first saw this scene.
Not only that, but this scene in particular manages to provoke some kind of emotion within you, even though you're absolutely aware it's coming from the villains' side, not the heroes'. I agree with folks in the comments, the Ant Queen's death doesn't excuse her heinous crimes, but I don't think Togashi intended on portraying her sympathetically just for the sake of making us sympathize with her.
Moral ambiguity and grey morality have always been the core themes of HxH, and the Chimera Ant arc in particular shows how the monsters we identify can act very human just as much as we can, whether it'd be pursuing their own goals or mourning the loss of a loved one, especially in the case of Colt. I don't excuse him for carrying out the Queen's orders, but holy crap am I finding myself invested in him because he's just too damn compelling and complex to write him off as a typical villain. And I give props to Togashi for that.

This whole show is nothing but moral questions and LGBT+ subtexts (no debate on this; there's literally articles on this at this point). From the Chimera Ants, to the Phantom Troupe? You realize that the nature vs nuture theme comes into play once more. It was in the queen's nature to reproduce and achieve one goal; protect and love her son, and those that would come after him if she had completely succeeded in her plans.
She was cruel, and disregarding of other species that weren't ants, but she didn't do it just out of eagerness. She did it all for her child. Definetely a character that can be a challenge to hate if you really dig deep into the question of morality.
A lot of moments in this show are rough to swallow. Def isn't your average shounen anime where protag will just wins it all and everything is just black and white.

Yeah, lots of debate here whether the ant queen is evil or not. Well, for me it all boils down to nature. In this anime's universe, the chimera ant race are wired differently from humans. They don't have the same nature. Nature is not evil, it is the way it is. When the royal guards fed themselves to a dying meruem, they couldn't have been more happy. That's the purest form of love, unconditional. They are wired like that. Palm cried when meruem was about to kneel to her. He was her enemy, but she is part ant and her nature still tella her that the king is the most important being of their race. Humans don't eat humans not because we are not evil. It's because that is out nature. We have sympathy, we are conscious because that is our nature. The concept of good and evil is subjective and it is only to us humans. But when it comes to nature, it is what it is.

Because she was just an animal eating to survive, and at this point in Meruem's character arc, was the lesser of two evils. The Ants were originally supposed to just feed humans to her, not torture them and kill for fun. Colt and the Ants who stayed with the queen were just following orders and had no reason to kill humans once the queen was finished.
