Very interesting! I wonder how much more powerful the EK Cobra crossbow would be if you moved a single 130lbs arm forward (like you mentioned at 4:55)? Does it goes up to 140, 150 lds equivalent? Could you run some tests to see? That could be a simple but effective hack to slightly increase the power...

Hi Joerg, thank you for all the videos... i just found your channel... i love the dry humor and the laughs...great videos !! Groete van uit Suid-Afrika.
What I find interesting is the bow string stayed together. Ofc over a short time it will break. The crossbow itself wouldn't last long though despite the excellent, above average build quality. That much strain would break it also. Stil it is amazing it got that kind of speed and energy from a short throw crossbow.
I added too much to a Stinger. Shattered a bolt as it overshot another, which got bent. Was hazardous to try to dismantle, as the string got stuck in all that mess and still had plenty of energy. And it was difficult to draw, while only providing a 15% increase in arrow speed. So I no longer do that; it’s back to standard 80 pounds.
If my math is correct, a 140 to 150 lb limb would be the same energy as a 40 lb longbow, which is the minimum bow for deer hunting where I live. To put that into perspective, to hunt deer with a rifle it is generally accepted in a few countries that a 6 mm bullet with 1000 ft lbs of energy when it hits the deer is required, so most deer hunting rifles have over 1500 ft lbs so that after the bullet travels for a while in the air it still has the 1000 ft lb left to kill the deer. Now the military decided that a 5.56 mm bullet with around 430 ft lbs is enough to kill a human from any angle the bullet enters the torso, assuming that it is aimed at the heart/lungs and the person is wearing armor, so the bullet starts with much more than that amount of energy so it will still have that much energy at far distances. If it takes twice the energy to safely kill a deer as it does to kill a human, than with a 150 lb draw weight adder you can either hunt a deer at normal longbow deer hunting ranges of less than 30 yards, or you can kill a human at a further distance. So the question is, how far does an arrow have to travel before it loses half its energy? That is a complicated question and it depends on the weight of the arrow, its speed, and the ballistic coefficient of the arrow. I think it would be a safe guess that it loses half its energy by 60 yards. So a 140 to 150 lb adder crossbow could kill a human at about 60 yards. Now with good sharp arrows, and from a good shooting angle, I would bet it could do it over 100 yards, or even 150 yards. It really depends on how much energy is left at that distance. Though I only feel completely confident in saying 60 yards.
344 feet per second = 104.9 meters per second. Still legal in Canada where 150 is the limit. I captured the audio in Audacity and compared the times. The OG adder took 0.192s between shot/hit, and this beefy version did it in 0.152s. An improvement of 23%.
LOL, hi ya buddy, I`m glad you did this because i was going to do the same thing, well i guess i will try the 90 lb extra limb, i have a 50 lb limb of of the small some wheres just forget where, so will try for fun. Merry xmass buds
You have to create a double-leverage-arm method for cocking the bow -- perhaps a short two-to-one pulley or a one-turn crank. Halve the required force to cock the bow and you get back to the original strength requirement.
Thanks for actually doing some advance out of the box testing on the Adder. My concern would be the longer term wear and tear on not only the cocking mechanism but to the sear/trigger/axis pins. It would be good to take it apart after 250 shots to see what has worn. Once you start wearing and rounding off the sharp defined contact edges, one will have to be concerned with safety. How much more tension was the trigger pull increased by? I think it would be safe to stay within the design limits of the crossbow, but thanks for testing its limits. Thank you. I enjoy all of your videos.

Joerg, many people have done such mod on the internet and clocked the bolts and found out that cutting several inches off from the ends of the additional limbs gives the best results. You can google it and see the results people get.
you may be suffering diminishing returns from using somewhat light bolts, you may wish to use heavier bolts for the modified adder to make use of the extra throwing power.
I wonder, if you made a custom bracket for the arms and quadrupled the power (set of 2 on top of a set of 2), and used some sort of triple pump ratchet lever, how fast could one of those bolts go...? The original version had a flight time of 192ms compared to 152ms, measured from the initial sound spike of the launch and hit. That's a whopping 26% decrease of lead time! Kinetic energy goes up by the square of the velocity, so that's a MEAN modification damn
The bow part on mine broke the bolts are cheap and to replace the bow is 100.00 with 20.00 shipping which is ridiculous i have Parkinson's and thought it would be a good choice for me boy was wrong i have had nothing but problem's but i do enjoy your videos take care and stay safe Jay Den Hamer.

Anti-tank depleted uranium firing auto crossbow the size of a car
I LOVE the deployable bayonet.
I think this would be a good modification for military mission specific applications. Maybe for recon with an additional sidearm to fall back on. But as far as everday backyard shooters? I would pass on 240lbs. 130 lbs is good for having fun practice shooting and small game.
This is great, my adder is on it's way from Germany, I cant wait not maxed out like this. Yet
I immediately was thinking the modified one would be a good candidate for tree stand hunters.
