I don't know how much English her Mom used around the house but people with significant enough exposure to multiple languages in those early days can end up having a larger phonetic base.

I feel like watching English movies and series with Japanese subtitles is the best way for the girls to learn english
With English subtitles is even better. Translations get in the way of real learning once you are beyond understanding the basics of a language.
