Blender Tutorial - Hair With Curves

  • In the last few months I've had some time to experiment with different methods of making stylized hair in blender, and one of the easiest and effective ways that I keep coming back to is using nurbs curves. A deceptively simple method, curves in blender has a ton of hidden flexibility, some of which I want to share in this tutorial. Check out the artstation project here:
    www.artstation.com/artwork/Pm...
In the video, I show you how to model stylized hair using nurbs curves, as well as how to change the bevel curve. I also go into detail on how I made a procedural material for the hair, using the automatic UV generation blender disables by default.
Additionally, I've uploaded some of the hair models I've created on gumroad. You can check them out at this link: gumroad.com/l/curvehair
Be sure to let me know what you make!

1:49 If you are using the latest version of blender and you are trying to find the "vector" button, Select the line, Right Click, Click "Set handle type", and click "vector". Hopefully this helped some of you guys.

13:45 make sure to add Mix RGB, not mix shader, or your hair will turn bright magenta XD he does it super fast so it's hard to tell which ones he uses so be careful to pay attention.

    UPDATE:
I tried it and i can't describe how amazing and helpful this was, i was able to create a great looking hair in a very short time, and in a very easy way that allows a lot of control, and the shader can be customized and it's gorgeous! can't wait for more tutorials, especially the softbody animation ones!
The previously available tutorials were quite harder, the use of the path curve here makes it much easier than the bezier curve, I'm definitely going to try this, and the shading was crazy! Thanks a lot!

4 years later, on Blender 3.6, and this tutorial works like a charm, the only warning I'd give is that the UV option thing that lets you edit the Bezier Curve's UVs is gone now, so if you make some curves with flipped UVs you'll have to flip the curves to match the others, or you'll have to set the curves to meshes, which means you can't edit the curves after. It was my own mistake, and I wanted to mention it for anyone else before they made it too.

Nice clear presentation. Just a quick tip (which you probably already know). When I begin modelling I add an "empty" to the centre of the scene and label it "mirror object" (It can be locked in place and hidden). Then when I use the Mirror Modifier from the drop-down menu in the properties panel, I check the "Mirror Object" box and select it as my mirror object. This keeps all mirrored parts of a model perfectly aligned with each other and won't shift position when editing the mesh.
