I am disappointed with the American standard leaking I changed the gasket at least 3 times and it still leaks I will try your technique with the gaskets also the flus handle is hard to push down what toilet do you recommend it has to be high like the American standard thanks for the video
@@chrismathewsjr yeah, so sorry. Not intentionally ignoring anyone however my channel’s to the point now where I get tens of thousands of views a day and you can imagine how many comments. Changed the seal but was leaking even more than before, I thought the whole assembly was cracked or something, I was ready to change the whole assembly but after seeing your video and "aligning the notches of the clamshell" fixed it right away. It's working great again. A million thanks!
Even though it's been 4 yrs since you did this video, it saved my bacon today. I ordered 2 kits, replaced with one and Wala! I would have broken the shaft trying to get it apart.. ThankYouVeryMuch.. 👌
Your second video seems to have solved it. A.S. (I could come up with some other meaning) should pay you for this. It is beyond comprehension how they designed this toilet where you have to remove the tank to change the valve - and why they can’t design a gasket that doesn’t get bubbles. Good thing they’re not involved with the in’s Space Station! THANKS A MILLION!
Thank you SO much! I ordered the parts from American Standard based on your link and they sent at no charge even without the receipt. Just sent photos of the labels inside the tank! EASIEST FIX EVER!!!!!
Thank you for this video. I had no idea about the segments inside and how they needed to be lined up properly. I was wondering why I kept hearing dripping sounds from in the toilet and why the water level was going down so fast. This was why. Your video and comments from all of the viewers saved me a bunch of money because I was on the verge of buying a new toilet.
I can't thank you enough for this video! I watched it on Tuesday and you made it look so easy I decided to try to fix it myself. I used the link provided and ordered the American Standard part from Amazon (it was only $7) It was delivered today (Thurs) and it only took about 3 minutes to make the repair. No more "ghost flushing". Everything went exactly as you showed it. Thanks again. I am sure you saved me several hundred dollars. A plumber would have probably replaced all the innards if not the entire commode.
Amazing that it's 6 years since you posted this video and American standard still has this problem. Mine started 3 months after installation of the new toilet. Thank you for posting this video.
Thank you a MILLION for this second video!! I did the first steps but definitely did not have the green clams aligned correctly, misleading me to believe that I had a problem much worse. What a relief after this step worked. 😅 Thank you again!
thank you, as the son of a deceased master plumber, I have helped my father since I was 7 year old. I quickly replaced all 4 toilets from builder grade to AS Champion 4 in 2011. Recently one began to seep from the tank into the bow. So I ordered 4 OEM AS gaskets and o rings. Replaced all 4. Then 1 of the 4 started the phantom short fills. This was the problem. THANK YOU! For most parts I prefer Korky but you are correct AS parts for this toilet are the only way to go.
Thank you. Exactly the mistake I made and was thinking of replacing the whole assembly. Aligned the notches, tightened, and all is good as new. Many thanks.👋👋👍
I had replaced the gasket once before, no problems, the second time I changed the gaket it continued to leak so I came back on line and saw this second video, I didn't know you had to line up those four indentations so I took my gasket apart, aligned the indents and voila' it now works properly. THANKS, btw this is one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched, well done!
Thank you for this video. It fixed the problem with my toilet. I saw the original video, but I still had the problem. I was so glad that I subscribed to you. The following day this video came to me, and now my toilet is fixed. You are the first person that I have ever subscribed to and it paid off for me in a big way. I was just getting ready to call a plumber. Thanks again!
Wow. I had a plumber come out 3 times to try and fix our toilet. He suggested finally that we get a new one and start over. WHAT? It's only a year old. ANYWAY, I decided to check out the solution online. I watched this video and guess what? The two parts of the flapper were NOT connected!!!! I snapped them together and tightened the screw and it no longer leaks. This one video saved us hundreds of dollars !! And, I might just take on a new profession! LOL THANK YOU SO MUCH -- extremely helpful!
Thank you so much for your input! I was about to replace the fill valve after I replaced the flapper...! 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks to you and your video, i have no stress now! 👍
I am amazed. My toilet has been ghost flushing so frequently I had to turn off the water supply between uses. I had replaced both the smaller red and larger blue seals and still ghost flushing. Until I found your video explaining lining up the top and bottom clam shell parts with the 4 tab/hole sections my toilet was useless. I realigned the green clam shell top and base and miraculously the ghost flushing stopped. This is the best advice, saved me taking apart the toilet to replace all the parts. I do understand the blue seal needs to be replaced and mine more often than 2 years but now I can have a real functioning toilet.
Thank you. After replacing the new gasket..it was still leaking..and i realized I had to line it up so grooves fit on top of the bottom piece lines correctly. Good video.
Thank you so much for your video! You just saved me the cost of an emergency plumbing visit because of course the toilet has the problem on a weekend 😄
I was on my last try before ripping this toilet out and never buying an American Standard anything again. Like an almost boomer, I should do what my millennial kids tell me and "you tube" it first lol. Thanks! it worked
Thank you for this video. I was able to fix part of the problem by lowering the water level which helped a LOT, but it would still self-flush occasionally. I found your video and was able to find the part locally at Home Depot. It was so easy to replace the part thanks to your video. Now to order and fix the other American Standard toilet!
Thank you father and son team. You just saved us from replacing this toilet. If you're still leaking even after replacing the gasket, this is what I did to fix mine. I doubled the big blue gasket with the old one which I popped (right into my face) with a utility knife and I also put lithium grease lying around the smaller red gasket, any grease would do i think, as suggested by the video petroleum jelly might work too. Both those suggestions sealed the deal for me, all thanks to this video and others who commented. And there's more ... if your flush just doesn't have enough umph on these champion 4's like mind did right from the store... if you extend the tube that fills it by buying a 1" pvc coupling (might need to shave off to fit) for a couple cents, that made the flush whatever is in there completely. In another video which i can't find atm. happy flushing!
I may have to try this method. I replaced the rubber ring and I’m still getting leakage. It’s causing my water bill to go up quite a bit. Did you put grease between the rubber ring and top part of the flusher, or did you just double up on the rubber rings?
Great video for very annoying slight toilet running. Couldn't figure it out on my own due to funky flush valve setup , instead of traditional flapper. Took valve off, it still looked good. Reinstalled per video. Now there is no ripple and refill, just golden silence! Videos like these are what makes youtube great!
Goodness...I have been dealing with this issue for so long. Also replaced so many gaskets, even doubled it up with no success. I was convinced the toilet just sucked. Can't believe I overlooked something so simple. Issue fixed..Thank you so much!
I just stifled a snarky comment I was going to make and instead what to really thank you for this video. I have done this same fix now for three times in 28 months and I am getting better at it.
Thank you so much. We were ready to get a new one. This video was great !! Not really happy with design. But hopefully we now have solved the problem. Thanks to you.
You are very helpful brother I appreciate you taking your time to show us how to fix leaky toilet and I never don't know why I didn't think to check the green things and see if they were lining up but that was my problem all along so I appreciate it again brother and good luck and may God bless you
Thanks so much!! I’ve repaired both my toilets several times with no problem. Either got lucky or forgot about lining up the two halves. Thought something else was wrong (not real A.S. gasket?). Ordered some from A.S. Noticed this video. No need to worry about calling plumber ! Gaskets from Amazon working well, now.
As happened to others, my toilet was still ghost flushing after I replaced the gasket and small "o" ring. Luckily, with this video you help me fix the problem (by aligning the notches). Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Oh thank you for saving my life I was at wits ends worrying a out the extra $10 a month my leaky toilet was costing me,,ready to end my life,,it just wasn't worth living but alas your video has once again give me a reason to keep on keepIng on,,,,,,,,thank you thank you thank yiu
Thanks for the vidio it was huge help .i replace two blue rings today because I didn’t watch this video.didnt know about those four notches now after watching this video my toilet 🚽 is working like a charm .thank you you are life saver
American Standard was good to quickly send me the gaskets for free, no receipt. Love that!! Thanks so very much for the super helpful video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have 2 of these toilets. Both where ghost flushing. In addition to following this video, squeeze the shells together while screwing the top button in. No more leaking.
what do you mean squeeze the shells together? I just replaced the gasket and it still ghost flushes. It did the same thing about a year and a half ago when I changed the gasket. Everything is lined up right. Thanks, Mike
I have also purchased the champion model at the end of August 2022. It has started leaking and the flapper thing would not sit down in the spot it should be. I watched both your videos on this, Am.Std. seems to have changed the design a bit. I turn off water, unhook the chain and found the it was unscrewed (top green and bottom black) there is no plastic screw thing at the top or gasket. Mine is one piece and screws into the black non-removeable part. Didn't check to see if any notches in the plastic, screwed it together and it works great, no more leaks every 30-45 seconds. Thanks for your tips and my wife's keen vision.
I misaligned the notches the first time and was afraid I might have to replace the whole flush mechanism. So glad I found your video before making a trip to the store.
Just replaced the gasket in my 6-year-old American Standard toilet. I didn't totally understand what you meant when you said the old gasket could have bubbles in it. It looks totally blistered. No wonder it wasn't making a good seal. What in the world happens to that gasket to cause it to blister like that? The great step-by-step instructions and the link to the Amazon gasket set helped out a lot. Thank you so much!
This was amazingly helpful. I honestly didn't even replace the seal yet. I took it apart and noticed two small bubbles on the seal. I popped them and tore away a small piece of the plastic so they cannot refill with water. Put it all back together and it's not dripping anymore!!
I just replaced the gasket and it still ghost flushes. It did the same thing about a year and a half ago when I changed the gasket. I made sure everything is aligned right. I am at a loss as this should be such a simple fix. I've replaced many toilet parts over the years and never had a problem. Thanks, Mike
Another trick is to flip the existing blue washer over and reinstall it. I had a small leak due to the blue washer slightly warped, but it worked perfectly by just flipping it over. That was a year ago and still no leaks. I bought a new washer but will not install until I need it.
I've replaced these seals a few times before and must have lucked into aligning the notches. On my last valve seal change, the toilet just continued to run after the repair. I watched your video and took it apart and aligned the notches and put it back together, and no more running toilet. Thanks for sharing this with us! It would be a good idea for American Standard to include that little tip in their replacement instructions.
thank you for posting. that flexible blue gasket is 2-sided. i just removed the gasket, flipped it over, reinstalled gasket, & reassembled. leak problem solved. i would not recommend petroleum jelly for lubricting the o-ring & threads. pj can degrade the o-ring and some plastics. silicone grease would be recommended.
Thanks so much for the video. Very helpful. Called AS and they are sending me a new seal at no charge with no questions. I inspected my seal and found a bubble, so while waiting for the new seal to come in, I decided to take the seal out and turn it over. I have not had a leak since then. We'll see how long it last. Thanks again
Thank you, purchased the fluidmaster 510A-001 ant the champion 4 ghost flushing continued.. I will try the oem gasket. I have 4 of these toilets in rentals and I ABSOLUTELY will be getting on the class action suit against American Standard parent company and every Champion 4 owner should as well.
For a temporary fix while you wait for the replacement gasket to be delivered, you can remove the current one and if you puncture the bubbles they will drain and the gasket will be able to seal.
Thanks for the video it ready help me understand how it works, but before purchasing the new gasket, I check to see if my gasket has any bubbles on it and it does. I decided to use sharp pin or knife to punch a hole in bubbles on top of gasket, it help release water buildup in the bubble without taking out the gasket. So far is working with no leaking. My toilet was refilling up every 4-5 minutes before, so far it has not heard anything.
Typically this is a good short term plan. After popping the blisters it will typically start leaking again after a few weeks or at most a couple months. I would strongly recommend buying a couple of the new gaskets and having them ready to switch out. The five dollars that you’ll spend on a gasket you’ll make that back in water saved very quickly.
Still leaking for about a year after changing seal. I was so close to pulling out the whole toilet! Thank you for this fix. It’s exactly what the problem was.
I replaced the gasket and o ring supplied by as still ghost flushed called them back told support didn't fix the problem so they sent me you tube links on cleaning and adjusting fill level. I did both found your how to and while apart checked for tab alignment but my champ is built in 2014 doesn't have the tabs as pictured in your video. I'm waiting to see if cleaning and adjusting fill level makes any difference but I didn't see any build up on the fill valve diaphragm and I did the fill valve flush for debri as well. Any suggestions are welcome!

Excellent video. Thank you!
THANK YOU!!! Got lucky on one of my toilets.....been losing my mind on the other one.....Huge AHA! moment......Cheers
The alignment of the slots was the fix! Thanks.

Yeah this got me! After a couple choice words i took it back apart and saw what i did wrong. Thanks for the link too!
This was amazingly helpful. I honestly didn't even replace the seal yet. I took it apart and noticed two small bubbles on the seal. I popped them and tore away a small piece of the plastic so they cannot refill with water. Put it all back together and it's not dripping anymore!!
Happy to help! Be sure to replace the gaskets sooner than later. That old one will get more bubbles soon.👍

I replaced my gaskets, aligned the notches, and it is better, but I can still detect a very slight seep with food dye in tank. So annoying!!
Thank you for the information on the notches. I was getting ready to replace whole unit because toilet was
Another trick is to flip the existing blue washer over and reinstall it. I had a small leak due to the blue washer slightly warped, but it worked perfectly by just flipping it over. That was a year ago and still no leaks. I bought a new washer but will not install until I need it.
this was perfect! was missing this step so was still leaking. THANK YOU!!!
Wow - the bubbles on the gasket! Thank you!
Great help. No one talked about the little gasket replacement and where to buy it. Thanks.
You’re welcome 👍 Happy to help!
thank you for posting. that flexible blue gasket is 2-sided. i just removed the gasket, flipped it over, reinstalled gasket, & reassembled. leak problem solved. i would not recommend petroleum jelly for lubricting the o-ring & threads. pj can degrade the o-ring and some plastics. silicone grease would be recommended.
Oh my goodness thank you for this video.
Worked like a charm! Ta dah! Just saved some bucks!
Happy to help!👍😎
Thank you for posting this video. Very, very helpful
Thanks, what I noted was how faded my blue gasket had become compared to the new one.
Yup👍
Thumbs up! I did not know the clamshell came apart. I'm about to order the seal from Amazon. Good video. Good job.
Thanks a lot!!!! That was it and this video fixed my toilet issue. Thanks!!!
Thank you, for the video. Straight and to the point.
Thank you for both videos, the 2nd is an important step. Appreciate you posting.
For a temporary fix while you wait for the replacement gasket to be delivered, you can remove the current one and if you puncture the bubbles they will drain and the gasket will be able to seal.
The notches marching is a saver no one mentions this soooo important!!!
Thank you so much for your help! I was able to repair one of my Champion 4 Toilets with the above advice!
Best detail vid ever.
You’re welcome 👍 Happy to help!
Thank you for this it saved me actually replacing the entire valve.
Me too!
Thank you! I was stomped
Your second video is best. Now, no ghosting for 3 days …and counting!
