Great Video. Precise and to the point. I'm a home improvement contractor and I know the difference. You even called the "air filled bladder" the correct name. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I will definitely use your tips. Thank you again!
Great instructional video. Your explanation will make the process of replacing the valve on my American standard toilet very easy, and I appreciate that. Thank you very much.
Great video! I too usually have no issue with DIY plumbing repair but American Standard had me stumped on this one! Thank you again you have the only video online that shows this!
Bless your heart!! Again, you are the only youtube video I could find with my style flapper, almost. Excellent job explaining the workings of a toilet for those slackers who don't bother anymore to figure it out.
Dude! Thanks so much for saving me time and money. Your super-comprehensive video and the excellent comments below helped me with 3 things. 1) How to fix the toilet. In my case, it is a leaky flapper 2) Do it for free by calling American Standard as the toilet is under warranty. I didn't save the receipt but the guy was nice enough to do a one-time courtesy shipment 3) Fix it temporarily while I'm waiting for the warranty item to arrive b applying Vaseline on the bottom of the flapper. That stopped the leak for now. Such a great example of the TH-cam community coming together to help each other out. I would've spent at least $40 on doing it myself and $100+ had I called a plumber.
Hey just a comment I bought a Fluidmaster American standard Champion 4 seal for my grandpas toilet. Figured I didn’t have to spend the extra dough on the whole apparatus and so far so good. Great vid!
This was a great video for this kind of toilet. So, what I did was unscrew it and then remove the plastic cap holding the gasket down and pulled gasket off and noted that on the side away from the drain there was an indentation in the gasket so I flipped the gasket over and it fixed the problem. Thanks, one of the few to address this kind of toilet. Great video.
Thank you. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to remove the top to replace the gasket without breaking anything based on other videos. This is the model flapper valve I have so your instructions were spot on. Thanks again.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Great video and I've been so frustrated by this valve and how to remove the seal to replace it. You save me a lot of work showing how it clicks and unscrews. Now I don't have to replace the whole assembly.
I had the same issue , I registered my toilets and there is a 10 year warranty. I called them and they sent new revised seals and problem solved. The video is great as you need to know about the clicks on removal and reassembly.
Excellent video - I wish I knew how dicey the flush and flapper were on this toilet before I bought it and had it installed. It has had numerous run-on issues - and as you showed, it's most likely at the flapper. As other commenters have said: thanks for showing how to unscrew the flapper. I purchased a set of 2 Pack 7301111-0070A Flush Valve Seal Kit for American Standard Toilet Valve Seal for Champion 4 Tank and Eljer Toilets Flush Valve Gasket rings, from Amazon. The new blue rings are slightly thicker than the original clear ring. One other IMPORTANT thing: there is a locking mechanism that locks the ring in. It must be turned to a "mark" to secure the ring. So far, this ring replacement has SOLVED the problem. I did not need to purchase a complete kit. Just the seal rings. Thanks again for this video and your other videos!
Thanks so much for the video, these were the only instructions I could find for parts that didn't have the twistable part that removes from the top. Was able to fix our leaky toilet on my own. :)
Great video. I’ve replaced the flush valve assembly every year for the past three years but great to know it’s actually the flapper. SMH thinking of replacing the toilet all together.
Thanks for the video. I replaced all my toilets over years to this Champion model. None of the old one have had any problem whatsoever. The newest one I bought, made in Mexico is the one started leaking
Damn fine video. Thank you. I have two of these toilets in service. One for about 5 or 6 years which has given me zero problems. One I installed a year and a half ago. That is now leaking but I don't know where. Doesn't appear to be the flapper but I'll replace it just to see. This showed me extremely well How to understand a flush valve from American standard Even though I've installed several of my own and repaired all of my own toilets for many many years. Thanks again!
Before replacing anything! Remove flapper cover and make sure the gray ring that holds flapper right under green cover is secure, mine came loose from manufacturer and leaked. Thanks to this video I removed cover and found gray ring loose. Fixed my situation. Good luck people.
Just what the doctor ordered. Great video. Thank you so much for taking your time to process. Supremely help me out with an issue. I was having kudos to you brother.
Absolutely super video! I bought 4 yes four toilets because I was tired of the cheap flappers; I also heard good things about American Standard. Well, you are spot on. I changed the first one a year ago and did it the hard way. Slipped off the seal over the top. This time, I took off the entire drop-down flapper. So much faster!!! Some suggestions: take off the flush lever and use latex or rubber gloves, which allow a sure grip if you have a weak grip or a build-up of slime on the parts.
Watched your video very helpful. You can replace just the gasket which is likely the problem with the flapper. Saving you the cost of the full canister.
I have an older Champion 4 which I previously did battle with the part that screws into the flapper from the top. After conquering that technique, I replaced another toilet with a newer Champion 4. The new one started phantom flushing after a few months. I opened it up and was faced with a new flapper design. Your video really helped me conquer this one. The new design is an improvement over the older one, but that gray clip seems pretty flimsy. I think the next time I need to replace a toilet, it will not be a Champion 4.

I even have spare kits now. I finally after a lifetime of apartment DIYs education i told my friend helping me unpack and she saw the kit and I said "nope put it away! I finally have a brand new toilet!" DAYS later and days leaking and adjusting the valve, today I'm fixing it. Never had American Standard flapper and i got as far as trying to take it off and figured I'd need to work in the tank. I wasn't even looking for an answer to that just wanted to see the parts assembly. You SAVED me so much the first 5 mins i just HAD to "THANK YOU!!" BRAND NEW!?! it just fell apart! Great video. Our friends highly recommended this model. Ad said it could flush ten golf balls! I told my wife next time I accidentally swallow ten golf balls I know my toilet will handle it the next morning. Sadly, the toilet started leaking after six months. Thanks for the tutorial.
We have a toilet that had a nagging leak a few years ago. I replaced the flapper several times and it still leaked. Old timer at the hardware store told me to apply a coating of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on the bottom of the flapper where it contacts the opening it seals up. I was skeptical, but gave it a try. Toilet hasn't leaked yet. I did the same thing to our 2nd toilet and both my Mom's toilets when they started leaking, and it fixed those too.
@TKCL Agreed and sad, really. Good info on the fix, a shame the manufacturer doesn't acknowledge the issue. More money for them with a full replacement, though. .
Another thank you. I bought 2 of these toilets in 2022 and one is one is now cycling every 20 minutes or so. I couldn't see or hear any leaking but this is most likely the issue. reading in the comments, it sounds like Home Depot now has replacement gaskets or flappers in stock. I will have to check it out. Great helpful video.
I bought 3 of these toilets in my home when I bought it about five years ago. They’re all bad and my water bill just jumped $350. Thanks for showing this. They were running every three minutes
Great video. Once I got the flapper off, I found I could turn the bottom a quarter inch and pop the bottom off. That way you can just replace the seal and not have to buy the whole assembly.
My issue was related. There is seemingly a greater level of vulnerability to leaking caused by calcium buildup on the circle on which the flapper sits. Removed flapper per the excellent tip in this video, then let CLR sit on the calcium for a couple minutes, then wiped away until all calcium removed. Then good to go. The Vaseline idea is really cool. I’ll bet it has both the benefit of aiding seal and resisting calcium. Will try on the inevitable next treatment.
man, thank you so much we have had ours for maybe 9 months i already replaced the entire flush valve once and its leaking again i took the silicone gasket off and were the bubbles were in it i just took a needle and poked a hole and water came out the gasket then flattened out i put it back on and no more "running" toilet will see how long it lasts.. i did order replacement seals just to have in case this does not last again thank you for the video this was the best instructional video i have found for the champion toilet
Great video! Thanks. I’m having the same issue but I was able to get free replacement parts from American standard. I believe they have a lifetime warranty on the internals.
Mine was leaking from the flapper. Took it out and noticed the bottom part was loose and not pressing the seal firmly to the flapper body. Gave it a twist to tighten it up, reinstalled, and all is good. Thanks for the video
The new round gasket helped, but didn't stop the leaking completely. After much frustration, I bought a SECOND round gasket and put it with the first round gasket, making it TWO layers thick. Presto!! Problem completely solved.
I did this and it worked like a charm. The only thing that I would recommend is to use vise grips under the bulb when unscrewing if you are not taking the tank off. Mine fell down into the toilet. Luckily I had a long pick up tool to bring the "post" back up through the center. See 2:37 in the video. Otherwise, a flawless hack.
This video helped me disassemble the flipper unit. I took out the seal which had the blisters. I don't know what causes them but I ran a tweezers into them, fluid came out, the seal flattened out so I put everything back together. We'll see how long it lasts but so far it's leak free.
I have the exact same toilet. I had to replace the flush assy also after about a year. After some research, I found that the flapper goes bad because of the use of tablet cleaners being placed in the tank. The chemicals/chlorine cause the rubber to bubble up and cause it to not seat flush on the valve. My wife now uses the stick on ones in the bowl instead of the tank.
We also use those chemical tablets and now have a running tank. I bought a generic replacement valve seal and replaced the original, but it still runs.
@@JasonMaehl If you have stopped using the tablets, I would recommend replacing it with OEM. I bought four of them as spares and havent had to replace it since we stopped using the tablets.
Excellent video. I had the flapper accidently come off. Not sure how. Home Depot couldn't figure the problem although I showed them the video. They sold me a 25 dollar kit which I luckily didn't install. All I had to do was twist the flapper back like you showed.
Thanks for the tip on the top screwing off if you hold the stem below. You can just buy a replacement gasket and replace once you take the cap off. The cap has a grey plastic large retaining ring that you can easily pry off and replace the underlying gasket
Excellent job! Thank you so much! I’m just going to replace the whole toilet. I’ve been through this before w this toilet. Do you recommend a better toilet?
Hi, Andrew! I recently had to replace the flapper on my Crane toilet, and all I had to replace was just the flapper. I’m happy I don’t have American Standard.
Upon searching online for a valve assembly I find that none shown actually state my model number. Will the valve assembly used in this video be the valve assembly to use for American Standard model 4266? I completed agree that having to disassemble the whole tank is ridiculous! I wish it was just my flapper. Unfortunately the plastic rod that runs through the center of mine snapped off. Im thoroughly aggravated! Great job doing the video! Best vid I found while searching all afternoon and I can't express enough how happy it has made me! Thank you!!!
I have three Champion 4 toilets installed over several years. I know, I know. My thinking was over that time the design process would have improved but it did not. All three have the ghost flush. I called American Standard and received a new gasket for free ( this was 5 years ago). I changed the blistered gasket (very easy) not the cap as shown in this video. Six months later ghost flush again. I see NU Flush has a conversion kit for this toilet, to go to the tried and true flapper valve. I may purchase one and if it works after six months may get two more conversion kits. I see there is also a class action suit regarding this faulty toilet.
I feel your pain, I got tired with replacing toilet parts on these brands, so I switched to the TOTO Drake, that has the neat flush channel instead of holes. I have replaced 2 out of 5 in the house. The MSRP of the Toto Drake will give you a bit of sticker shock, but I have been watching the Amazon prices and have been saving around $100.
American Standard toilet here as well. Same mechanisms too. After flushing the toilet, the tank would fill and shut off. But then the water level in tank would decrease very slowly, causing the tank to refill after about 20 minutes or so, taking about 10 seconds to refill. This was happening over and over. It's the damn gasket on the flapper. Over time they bubble/blister, causing the slow loss of water. Why do they bubble up? Design flaw? I did have a plumber over to replace and thankfully for a very small fee. He showed me the ropes in case it occurs again in near future.
Thanks for showing how to unscrew the flapper! You have the only youtube video I could find with my style of flapper

The chemicals/chlorine cause the rubber to bubble up and cause it to not seat flush on the valve. My wife now uses the stick on ones in the bowl instead of the tank.
Good to know
We also use those chemical tablets and now have a running tank.
Glad it helped!
thx for the tutorial once I got it off I found an air bubble on the seal I popped the air bubble and no more leak thx again
Glad I could help
Same thing happened to me. You can replace just the faulty seal with Korky part number 450. Worked great.
I found it after this video amzn.to/3PoxyGF
Great video. Was very helpful
Glad it was.
Fantastic info thank you!
Huge help, thank you
Glad you found it useful.
Thanks for the tip on the top screwing off if you hold the stem below. You can just buy a replacement gasket and replace once you take the cap off. The cap has a grey plastic large retaining ring that you can easily pry off and replace the underlying gasket
I recently found the gaskets.
The gasket on the bottom of that whole assembly started breaking apart in the water leaks out .
thank you
Excellent Video what did was sucked out the remaining water in the tank with a shop vac
Nice. Appreciate the info. Interesting 👍✌️
Thank you for watching
Excellent job! Thank you so much!
I’m just going to replace the whole toilet. I’ve been through this before w this toilet. Do you recommend a better toilet?
Not offhand, but they do make a new and improved seal now. I'd try that before tossing the toilet. I love the power of this one.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hi, Andrew! I recently had to replace the flapper on my Crane toilet, and all I had to replace was just the flapper. I’m happy I don’t have American Standard.
That's the way it should be.
Thank you Sir! You really helped me 😊
You are most welcome
Thank you 🙏.
Any time!
You'll have to contact the manufacturer directly to answer that.
Thank you again, I was afraid that was the case.
Thanks for the hack, just what needed to know
Glad you enjoyed it
I have three Champion 4 toilets installed over several years.
They now offer an upgraded green seal on Amazon. I put one in my second toilet. A few months later and no issues.
Just saved me a whole lotta money.
Happy to help
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
thank you! i got the right part!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
I feel your pain, I got tired with replacing toilet parts on these brands, so I switched to the TOTO Drake, that has the neat flush channel instead of holes. I have replaced 2 out of 5 in the house. The MSRP of the Toto Drake will give you a bit of sticker shock, but I have been watching the Amazon prices and have been saving around $100.
Thank you thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you!! I found a replacement flapper seal at HD but couldn’t figure out how to take off the green part.
I also discovered the flapper as well and had to repair our other toilet.
Very helpful! Mine is almost EXACTLY the same age as yours. Poor toilet design. Menards sells the replacement seal!
I found the seal on Amazon after making this video.
Good video...Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
