    I think the whole "Use your gun more and cooldowns less" also helps improve mechanics. I feel like I used cooldowns willynilly a lot when I was worse because I wasn't confident with my aim (specifically with DPS). But I think now that I've gotten better I feel like I CAN rely on my raw weapon more than being forced to use an ability because I'm not sure if I'll hit the shot

    • @wubzt3r
      @wubzt3r ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree, actually. By using your cooldowns more, you are getting more practice for those cooldowns and improving those mechanics. If you hold on your sleep every time and only use it every other fight, you'll have so little practice using it that you're way more likely to miss and you'll improve much more slowly. There is a reason the #1 NA support says the exact opposite of what Freedo is saying.

    • @ironman1458
      @ironman1458 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wubzt3r There is a reason you are not the #1 NA support, and there's a reason he only plays comp and not OWL. For example, sleep dart is literally aimed with the same cursor that aims your primary fire, by improving your aim with primary fire you objectively get better at aiming your sleep dart. Probably a lot quicker than spamming it off cooldown every 15 seconds, since it doesnt actually matter if the sleep dart connects or if its your regular unscoped projectile bullet, you are aiming your cursor over their character model, so the primary fire lets you practice 15x shots before your sleep dart even comes back off cooldown (which you probably wasted, because you arent the #1 NA support player). the only difference is pressing left click vs whatever button you have sleep dart bound too. But its not surprising you dont know wtf youre talking about since youre not the rank 1 support player after all. Maybe watch some more youtube videos so you have more things smarter people than you said to regurgitate because thinking for yourself doesnt seem to be very effective for you

      @@wubzt3r at 4:58 the Ana used the sleep dart, her sole "escape" move on a flanking Roadhog. This does absolutely nothing (not to mention he even miss) because it was in the middle of a fight, one stray bullet and Roadhog would wake right back up.
      If he had kept his dart, Ana would have been able to deny a whole ultimate from hog, as opposed to dying with 2s CD left. Ana could have also stay on the high ground and dps on hog considering how big he is.

    The support mindset should be to adapt to every match and round. Sometimes you aren’t being pressured and can play more offensive and freely and focus on enabling your dps to make plays. Maybe there’s an incoming nano blade that you need to save cooldowns for. Literally look at the teams EVERY match and play accordingly. Look at who’s popping off and is an actual threat that you need to shut down. Support is always adapting to the situation and playing differently based on what you are up against. Maybe you aren’t even being pressured and you can just spam anti nades, or maybe you are being dove more often and need to save them to keep yourself alive.

    7:25 This is so true, I can play many characters in GM now (across all roles not just support), and the single most important thing for _all_ of them is to understand where to be, and when to make a play. I don't even have great mechanical skill anymore, so clearly good movement and timing can get you a long ways.

    • @tyler755
      @tyler755 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's seriously what I was thinking. This is entirely opposite of the way Awkward plays. And making the comparison to OWL players is ridiculous. They don't use them as often because they don't need to. Stacks play so differently from solo ladder.

    • @Kamorzy
      @Kamorzy ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Tbf, Awkward also realizes that it is not optimal to use those abilities off CD, especially in high rank play. He tells players that for 2 reasons.
      1. Low rank players won't be "saving it" for anything of particular value anyways. They don't have the gamesense for that. So simply spamming it off CD will probably help them rank up bc randomly it will work.
      2. For middle tier players, you will often get punished for poor ability usage. However, the only way you learn is by experiencing what happens when you use it in different situations. Spamming it a lot will teach you as fast as possible when its valuable and when its going to get punished.
      But everyone knows that Ana's abilities are some of the most closely tracked in high tiers. It is a big signal to dive her when she's vulnerable, and high tier Ana's definitely do not go around just spamming her abilities at everything in sight. Using them off CD is a learning strategy, not the optimal way to play her.

    • @neil002
      @neil002 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kamorzy well said. I think people tend to over generalize what they hear. Freedo specially said he’s surprised people can rank up this high spamming CDs. • @BrofUJu

      @@Kamorzy an issue I see at low ranks is people use cooldowns before fights have even started. Ana chucking a nade, Orisa using gold, stuff like that. They're just low value plays. Don't save them for forever but find a good spot.

      @dedalusow ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Speaking as an Ana main (masters), Jetpackjo was doing gods work on that map. Nading the full HP Hog was 100% correct move as it was a 5v1 the Hog should be dead if it wasn't trash elo. In gold games you can just do your best (and thats not by playing it "safe"). GG next, it happens, that doesn't mean you should default back to "Ana moar heals lol" gold mentality.

  • @dark_matter8420
    @dark_matter8420 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is just really good advice for any hero really. As a Tank player trying to finally get from Masters to GM, I've found the 'less is more' idea to be incredibly valuable. Not using abilities for the sake of using abilities, but using them with value in mind.

    • @Shiftup72
      @Shiftup72 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not. You never want to waste your abilities, but some should just be used as much as possible so that you can use them again faster.
      In other words, two decent nades in a fight is better than holding the nade for the perfect moment (that may never come).
      Sleep dart is the exception. Using sleep tells the enemy tank that you are now killable, and a mediocre sleep dart is so much worse than a good one.
      Put simply: nade is generally powerful while sleep is situational. So more nades is always good but more sleeps is not really that great.

    Sub-par advice tbh; holding cooldowns for the most optimal moment is a terrible idea if that moment just never eventuates.
    It's better to use your resources when you need them otherwise are you even really playing the game?
    The real issue with that Ana's gameplay was their positioning; they were almost always in a sub-optimal spot in the fight.

    I don't know, I think this is dangerous advice. It's important to know when you should use your abilities to get value and when to save them for yourself. Especially on Ana. Telling people that they should hold nade or sleep for 30 seconds for the perfect moment may lead to worse Ana players imho.

    • @neil002
      @neil002 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely think it definitely depends on the players current habits and maybe rank. For example, some players at low levels literally ignore using abilities. I think Freedo’s example of Ana / Hog is useful. Saving sleep for hog vape is extremely high value and has a regular cadence.

    • @jontaii152
      @jontaii152 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t get why they’re trying to tell people there’s one way to manage cooldowns, like, no that’s not what you are supposed to do. Every match is different, every round has a different pacing. There are always targets to prioritize and bigger threats to save cooldowns for. It’s just learning every match and being able to adapt. Maybe they literally don’t have anything you need to save cooldowns for and you are free to use them offensively, which is the best case scenario. If no one is forcing your cooldowns then you can be offensive and be a playmaker and enable your dps and tank heavily. But there are matches where you need to play safer, slow down your thinking, and look at what actually NEEDS to be shut down on the enemy team.

    I don't mean to criticize, it's just an interesting dichotomy

  • @jetpackjo1143
    @jetpackjo1143 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Firstly thank you Freedo for your video. Maybe he finds my comment and pins it.❤
    Secondly I'll try to answer some questions I've seen in the comments. Yes I've been in diamond since ow1 and wouldn't consider myself boosted by the current ranked situation. Sadly the game was on an old patch and I didn't record it myself, so you'll have to make judge my gameplay by the parts shown in the video. Though I do still have a picture of the scoreboard.
    Thirdly id like to discuss the feedback and tipps Freedo gives in this vide and how they differ to akwards as I have watched some of his recently (the vod in which he coached svb).
    Quick disclaimer, i will mention some of the stats of the game, not to boost my ego or something similar but to further the context of this game/my frustration with it.
    I personally prefer the advice/playstyle from akward which seems to contradict Freedos but that no reason to flame him or discard them. Akward advice is to use your cooldowns more often, especially before the fight begins to get an eraly advantage or even picks. He does not recommend just throwing them out immediately and wasting them though as he says we shouldn't rush them and take that half a second or second longer to set them up properly. I assume that Freedos advice is comparable to that part and not meant as you should sit on your cooldown forever. In this game (and probably in my orhers as well) i do rush my cooldowns from time to time as soon as I see an opportunity and don't get optimal results. That is something I have to work on. That does not mean those nades I used were horrible as you can see even those rushed nades did get 1-2 or more people antied and put pressure on the enemy. In this game in particular i would even argue that Freedos advice would not have changed much as I was working with a ticking time bomb (my dps died 18 and 21 times respectively) and having some pressure on the enemy while your team is still alive is better than the perfect nade when you are down one or two people. You could ask why did they die so often? I'd say it was not a healing problem as me and my other support had comparable healing to the enemy's with upwards of 14k. Did I not pressure the enemy team enough with my primary fire as Freedo reccommends? I'd also say no as I outdamaged 3/4 dps and all other supports (including a damage moira) in the lobby with about 12k damage while having the 3rd lowest deaths in the lobby. I'd argue i did the right call but who cares in the end you can't win every game. And that's fine but it can be frustrating when you feel like it's because of mm. It isn't always as bad as we feel like but should continue to call out blizzard to better.
    I think it would be interesting to see a talk/vod review with akward and Freedo together to clear up some misconceptions and see the differences and similarities in their approach and show the community that there is no need to spread hate towards creators just because they disagree. I hope i could be helpful and didn't come across to defensive of my play. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
    Cheers

    • @jetpackjo1143
      @jetpackjo1143 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Continuing on that keeping the cooldowns for the perfect moment, as akward said, you don't know it if you don't dare to waste your cooldowns and see what works and what doesn't. You have the potential to learn faster if you use your cooldowns more often.

      I mean, these sorts of games have been around for decades. Losers que isnt an original thing to OW. It’s a design tool devs have been using for a while.

    I watch a lot of Awkward and I watch this channel as well. I think a big part of Awkward's philosophy is to get in the reps. So, shoot a hundred Sleep Darts. AND EVALUATE each one. If you're at the level where you can land all your moves, then I think you can be a little more discriminating. But, if you miss all your Sleep Darts? Doing less Sleep Darts won't help you.
    Could be wrong, would love to see a duo-coaching situation. Not to clash but for noobs to learn two POVs.

    Enemy tank much higher than your tank? Weren't they supposed to fix that kind of matchmaking issue season or two ago?
    Who am I kidding, this is Blizzard we're talking about. At the same time as they speak in a blog post "fair is fun", they also are just happily keeping about the broken matchmaker that pits high silver/low gold players against diamond/master players.

    Awkward: use your abilities effectively to secure kills, don't hold onto them!
    Freedo: hold onto your abilities because they're threatening!
    Maybe there's more than 1 way to play ana? Very confusing if you consider both advice... Personally would rather listen to rank 1 ana honestly sorry

    • @ironman1458
      @ironman1458 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its probably situational, for example some games you might want to use nades often to rush nano as quickly as possible and some games spamming nade is throwing because they have ways to cleanse it and its better to wait till after, some games you might save both to use defensively if they have a lot of people diving you

    The reason that hog didn't die is because of poor awareness. Soldier started shooting before the nade went out and it didn't matter what the Ana did. Team COULD have killed the hog, they just didn't. You're targeting the wrong problem, my dude.

      And then A10 told Metro he was using Helix far too early in fights. Metro argued that it's on a 6 second cooldown. To which A10 replied not having it here is why X character didn't die as they crossed into the open field.

    i understand what your saying but your definitions of tempo and playing for value dont quite gel with me. tempo to me just describes the speed of the fight, which could be faster or slower. i dont know how it means "blowing your abilities early". and using CDs fast doesnt mean it will lack value. its all about reading the situation + luck. holding onto CDs TOO long to try to look for the biggest value to me would lose value because its wasted time and use. best way to describe what your saying is to just be intentional and more thoughtful with using cds
