  • What is keratoconus? To learn more about keratoconus treatment options check out our full series: • What is Keratoconus? (...
Keratoconus is an eye disease where the cornea(the front clear window to the eye) progressively thins and becomes distorted, often bulging outward in the shape of a cone. This warped appearance to the surface of the eye often results in high levels of irregular astigmatism which can cause high levels of blurred vision, glare and visual distortions.
Anyone who is diagnosed with keratoconus and shows signs of progression should consider having a procedure called corneal collagen cross linking; A new keratoconus surgery that has been FDA approved for to help treat keratoconus and slow or hopefully halt the progression of the disease.
People with keratoconus often have the best eyesight with the use of specialty contact lenses. These may include both hard and soft contact lenses but many eye doctors prefer the use of scleral contact lenses for keratoconus.

Do you have keratoconus? What do you use to see better? Glasses, contact lenses or have you had a surgery?

I do not; but thought I might, because I have monocular diplopia which resolves with pinhole, in part due to chronic dry eye / meibomian gland dysfunction / & ocular rosacea. HOWEVER my eye doctor missed the possibility of diabetes. I now eat fish and eggs DAILY and am careful to always wash my eyes. By eliminating carbohydrates and sugars it seems my vision has improved greatly. I still need reading glasses, but things are no longer doubled. Laymen often call monocular diplopia "ghosting" or "blurred vision". But the images are quite clear, just that there are two or even three of them. Apparently it was caused by temporary swelling due to a combination of spiked blood sugar (intolerance to white carbs) coupled with the dry eye and lack of oils from fish and eggs. I still sometimes do compresses and use eye drops. Note also that by massaging my eye area to improve blood circulation i obtain at least some relief from the dry eyes. Also, showers seem to help, whether because of heat on the eyes or soap on the lids. If I'm mistaken in my understanding somehow please tell me. I hope this feedback helps you to help others.

I've got a keratoconus in my left eye and am set to have a crosslinking procedure in the near future. Currently using glasses. I cant handle contact lenses because of dry-eyes.

Yes Dr..I got keratoconus in my eyes
And because of this I lost my vision or in another words I wasn't able to see any more
So for that I had a surgery called Implanting rings to tighten the cornea and return it as much as possible to its normal position
After the surgery, the surgery does not completely solved my vision problem...so I had to put on glasses to support sight and to more see clearly
After 8 years from the surgery a lost my left eye ring by accident and now I am waiting for the wound to heal to repair it again ...

I have it but ive never done anything about it my left eye is worse than my right. I have it in both eyes. I haven’t had a consultation with an eye doctor yet. If I close my right eye or put my baseball glove up to catch a ball (lefty) then I cannot see that well. I haven’t had any days off of work for a while but this friday im going to my primary care physician. i need to get a referral

Yes my husband was 1st diagnose with keratoconus at 13 yrs old. He had his 1st corneal transplant in 2008. The surgery was done because his hard CLS gave him a scar in his cornea. The most amazing thing he was able to see my eyes got so teary to see his reaction. And yes he has it in both eyes. Over the yrs. He developed cataracts which we knew it was going to happen due to the steroid drops so his body would not reject his new cornea. Well in 2021 he had 2 surgeries 1 on his cornea transplant his transplant was dying. They were able to save 1/2 redo a transplant and insert a lense removed cataract on that eye. He had a 2nd surgery on his other eye remove cataract and insert a lense. He wears glasses now. He had never been able to wear glasses do to the shape of his corneas. But thank God now he only wears glasses.

    I have this! 😢
I am going to have a lens fitting done and it’s mostly my right eye. It’s the most depressing thing because I thought I could have lasik but it’s not that simple a fix obviously. I am terrified of needing that surgery and hope it never is necessary.

Loving the keratoconus simulation through the camera lens. So glad we can do so much with the use of scleral lenses to help bring back or improve eyesight with patients who suffer from keratoconus.

May I ask , can it change from day to day ? Some days my vision is like keratoconus and other days it only a little bit . I feel crazy . I have to wear my reading glasses all day to see and some days only for reading. Depends on lighting. Please help as my optometrist just said I’m getting old . I’m 44 ?

This may be a dumb question but can this be prevented? I have a bad habit of rubbing my eyes and it’s even worse now that I developed eczema on my eye lids. I’ve heard excessive eye rubbing can lead to keratoconus, is that true?

I have this disease. And I have had hydrops in both eyes. I had a corneal transplant in my right eye about a year and a half ago. My left hydrop just barely healed in my left eye. My doctor said it’s not going to get any better. He told me that if I want a transplant, then I need to let him know. It’s definitely not clear vision, it’s still a little cloudy. On top of all this, my eyes really cannot tolerate the lenses very well. They always create a lot of protein buildup. I have HydraPEG on both lenses. Have tried multiple solutions, ‘soups’, as they call it when mixing with rewetting drops. Been fitted pretty good. So, I dunno. It’s a mess. I hate my vision. 😢

I'm curious about the following: if/when you have a new diabetic patient who hasn't been doing a good job controlling the disease do you put much effort into connecting them with the appropriate resources? Looking back now I feel very strongly that my PCP (s) failed me greatly in that respect. That being making sure that I really understood how serious diabetes is and how you really don't want retinopathy and how it really is preventable provided you have the necessary knowledge and support etc. I'm doing well now but it's mostly due to my taking charge and educating myself. My doctors including optometrists/ophthalmologists/PCP (s) and even the Endocrinologist didn't do very much at all to get me on the right path. Thee end. Good luck to everyone. I hope you have better doctors than I did!

Yeah i do ...wanted to do a transplant before the covid but they never called maybe cause they didn't get a transplant? Idk anyway after covid hit they literally said we needed to visit again and do the full checkup from the start...too tired to waste a day in the hospital but now i feel that I'm overly light sensitive so i might visit soon!
