Hello I dont know what Im experiencing. I sometimes have exertion headaches - those caused by strenous physical activities like exercising and lifting. And usually I see squiggly rootlike lines when I wake up. It appears as I blink my eyes and fades in 1 second.. Im also usually very lethargic when I experience that.. Sometimes, it's not squiggly lines but transparent spots that fill my vision.. Sometimes they sparkle... Doctors have looked into my retina and they say nothing serious about it.. They also dont know what they are... Looking at computer screen trigger my migraine/weakness ..
God Loves Me and You np I just told u cuz I have similar symptoms and have anemia so.... what you can do is if your below 15 go to pediatric if your above 15 consult a gp
I literally cried when I watched this video. I have been describing the aura with migraine since I was about 9yrs old, I am now 44. My siblings made fun of me and still do to this day because not one eye doctor was able to tell me what I was suffering with. I have several doctors give me bifocals saying that would help, some told me to take Excedrin but not one of them gave it a name. I was so scared (and still kind of am) that I could be going blind. I suffer from aura with migraine in both eyes, although it started in just one when I was younger. I am so relieved to know that I am not the only person that experiences this. THANK YOU...THANK YOU for making this video.
You aren't going blind. That is exactly what I thought the first time it happened to me. I've had this for several years. Sometimes it comes in clusters. It was happening a lot. I made a journal because I thought I should but I have stopped. I couldn't find a pattern or something that caused it. It happened several weeks in a row then months would go by. It's been at least a year since the last one but I know it can start again and come often and then nothing. Thankfully there is that blurry vision warning we get before we are blind-ish for the next 20 to 30 minutes. I have found that putting a cold pack on the nape of my neck, when it first starts, reduces the time. Maybe that will work for you. I have found 3 other friends with this, all of us are now women over 40 but who knows if that is the common denominator.
Been having them since I was 11 years old. They come on when I am focusing for long periods. Sorry I don't have a cure. I just close my eyes and lay down and just wait out the eventual headache, most of the time two hours.
Ive been getting these since I was a young child as well. Mine seem to be dehydration induced. Once the Aura starts, and I can drink an entire bottle of water, I can usually avoid a severe migraine. try it next time. Hope this helps.
You're not alone. It is a most cruel malady and, hopefully, medical science will conquer it one day. I've had migraine for over forty years. They will always terrify me. God bless.
@@elposho23 Yes. My visual attacks have worsened over the years. At 64 my first attack was at 22. Veteran, but never cease to scare and frustrate me. God bless and keep safe 🙏
Mine are really colorful, triangular shaped patterns start forming on a crescent shaped aura. The colorful triangles move along the crescent. My vision resembles the common colorful optical illusion pictures you can find online, it's trippy
It is absolutely terrifying when it happens, especially when I am on the metro or far from home and then all of a sudden can’t see. I have found mine are triggered when I’m overworking, not getting enough sleep or dehydrated.. when properly hydrated, the aura migraine episodes will rarely occur. Sending love to anyone else living with hidden disabilities 💙
I’m just wondering have you Always had migraines? I never had a headache in my life and definitely not a migraine it was only when I went to have dental surgery and they use lidocaine that was when I started having them and it’s been now two years.. I’m downhill ever since... And yes you’re right it’s very frightening; because when It first happened I thought I was losing my sight I’ve been to five different specialists and a Neurologist... I changed my dentist and the new dentist said she hit a nerve.. I’m just wondering how many people got this from having dental surgery and don’t realize it? Any input..?
I describe my experience as looking upon blacktop in summer where you see the heat radiating of the blacktop. I also get the blindness. My warning to take ibuprofen right away. I never want to get that headache again. At 65, not one doctor seemed to care so I handle it myself with the ibuprofen. One I had a very bad job working for several doctors. I had these attacks everyday for weeks. Sometimes several times a day. I quit the job and they stopped happening daily.
@@kellyprice1024 Yes, its exactly like the heat rising off a hot car roof in the summer. That's what my first one was like, but then the other day I got the waves but also had a strange geometric, zigzag pattern over the top. I was in awe about how the brain can produce such intricate patterns. Luckily I don't seem to get the headache, just the auras. I think its to do with dehydration.
Ive suffered with these for about 5 years now, and I've found that the biggest trigger for me is dehydration. Drinking water as soon as I notice the aura start actually reduces the severity of headache afterwards. Just something worth trying for anyone who wants ideas.
You scared the shit out of me when you showed an example of what the Aura looks like. Thank god I now know that I’m not alone in this and will be fine. How’s everybody’s day going?
It is comforting knowing that I'm not the only freak. LOL. Visuals, headache and very hightened emotions/depression knowing how small my very existence is. at least I know what to expect.
The vast majority of doctors don't know what it is. They just don't know. I had to figure it out for myself. I have put up with them so long and it never killed me, so I figured that I would just have to live with it.
@@jimbobaggans1564 I've had it since 16 im 36 now. I already tried to eliminate aspartame and artificial sugars... but sometimes just stress makes it appear. It sux because most people think I have anxiety due to fear no I have anxiety due to migraine and being stuck somewhere blind.
That is because, unless they have the problem, they don't care. They are only there to make money, be the hero and help you to see that he is better than you are.
Hey guys plz read this. i hope this will help you guys. I have been through this pain and i know how Frurstrating it is and its also very hopeless when no one knows whats wrong with you. I had same symptoms of this migrane for years. I used to thought that this is nausea or some other disease. I would like to share my personal history and experince. I hope that it will help you guys. As far as i can remember first time i had this migrane with blind spots and pattern i was 15 at that time. it started as a small spot in any eye. and than grew into a large pattern and faded in 30 min. then i had severe pain in head and i felt nauseus and i vomitted. after vomiting i felt releif and got better. This used to happen to ke once or twice a year. When i was 19 I joined Military. I got 2 years Military training as military training is very rigrious and we have a very balanced diet during training i never had one migrane for complete tow years. However i didnt Realise this fact. Aftr my training my routine got a bit easy however as i was serving in military i did exercise regularly and had a fine diet. But this migrane came back but its intensity was low and it happend rarely once a year. After 8 years of my service in Military one day i had this migrane again.but man it was at a new level. I had almost lost my eyes i was unable to see plus i was hearing a strange voice in my head. This time it was intense. and after 30 min it went away but i had severe headache. I had to suffer this process atleast 3 to 4 times a day and it went on like this for a complete week. I was hopeless confused. Then i thought about it very seriously and searched on internet because my doctor was also not sure what to do. i came to know about this problem that i hve migrane with aura. Then i thought about it seriously and discussed it with 2,3 doctors. After a long disscussion and research i Realised that.... 1. There is some deficiency in my body or there is access of something in my body 2. i need to change my life style and my diet. I started hard this time . I exercise daily for 40-45 min mostly cardio. And i have a very balanced diet i have stoped eating junk food and i m taking zinc , magnesium and calcium alongwith some vitamins for supplemnts.(i take them on alternate days ) Its been a year. i have not experienced any migrane .
mohsin raza thank you and I believe your correct. I changed my diet and started taking vitamins and boom things have change dramatically for me. Haven’t had a migraine in a while compared to how much they usually come. Appreciate you sharing this info. I think it’s important to help others who feel stuck. Migraines are painful. I wouldn’t wish it on an enemy. So long story short people try to change your diet. Also stay away from artificial sweeteners and msg! And take a multivitamin.
To me, it's not the headache that is bothering, but rather I feel like I'm always expecting these migraines to happen. It's a non stop anxiety, and it's become a bigger problem than the aura/migraine itself....
Yeah, when the Auora comes I feel like I want to jump out of a window. Last time I took valium (lucky enough to have) paracetamol and 50mg voltaren. Im gonna try taking that voltaren before I run too because if that can reduce the vessels from tightening then it could help.
I agree you look at a car light in the dark or camera flash, you think am I about to get a migraine? It is worse sometimes than getting one.. OK not worse but it sux.
Perfect description of my experience....starts gray then becomes a crescent of sparkling, triangular rainbow crystal like items that then slowly fade after 15 to 30 min. My eye doctor says they are ocular migraines. They are mostly annoying, but like an earthquake, you wonder how long they will last and will they come back right away.
I've lived with this most of my life and had no idea what, exactly, was going on or what is was called. As a teenager, when I saw the aura begin, I'd simply start sobbing because I knew what was coming. I'd call my mother, she'd pick me up from school and I'd go home to experience the migraine that was coming. It was debilitating. Now, as an adult, I still experience the auras, but the migraines have thankfully stopped. So nice to put a name on this! Thank you for this video!
Your comment that when you started getting the aura you’d cry and leave school hit so hard. I’ve been getting classic migraines since I was 7, and I can’t begin to explain how many times I’ve had to do this. Even now, as an adult, I still sometimes have to go up to my boss, almost in tears, and explain I have to leave. It’s such a helpless feeling. I’m so glad you’ve got relief from the headache itself! I hope mine fade away too 🥺
I have also suffered from migraines since I was little, I can say that they improved when I started exercising, but just yesterday I had one and it was the worst!
If it happens, try to sleep immediately, it happenes to me many times but when i close my eyes and sleep even for 5 minutes it goes away immediately but headache is still there
When it first happened to me, I was inconsolable because I had no idea what was happening and I thought I was having a stroke. It's terrifying! Thank you for the video with detailed terms- knowledge is power.
@@mademoisellepapillon706 I am truly sorry. My last one lasted just under 2 weeks. Full blown then cloudy then full blown again. Hope yours dissipates with haste. P.s. I wore an eye patch which helped.
My husband had this occur about 35 years ago. About 10 years later I started having them. Both of our daughters have also experienced them. Luckily we don't have migraines with them. My husband had the MRI and vision scan, but nothing found. It starts with the amnesiatic spot, then the scintillating scatoma, that passes within 20 min. Thought perhaps glaring light, but I have awakened in the night with them! I find I get them in clusters, like twice in 3 days, then go months or years without another. Both eyes are affected. I just do something big, like washing dishes until it passes. Annoying, but no longer scary. Thanks for you good description.
Yes it's so difficult to explain I was trying to explain my parents from so many day but I also get the same reply which you get. But know I will show th em this video
I’d say it looks exactly like when you stare at a bright light but it shape shifts and moves around for quite a while. And when it goes away get ready for some pain
The way he describes the aura is spot on. Ive been having them for 35 years, about once every month or two. They last about 30 minutes. I don't get the headaches.
30 minutes on the button, I can set my watch from start to finish. I do have medication to suppress the headache. Once I get the aura I have to pop a 50 mg Sumatriptan Succinate Tablet. If not the Headache is unbearable. Never leave home without it.
It’s spot on for the aura and I do get the hugely painful migraines and if they’re really bad only Sumatriptan will calm in but still not stop a bad one with anti nausea tablets. The aura I get is like strobe lights going round in circles, it’s horrendous and quite debilitating and can last a couple of days
Bro, it just happened to me for the first time ever, it looked like the scrolling dead pixels of a broken screen, and I legit thought I was going blind. Absolutely frightening experience. Thanks to God, I didn't have any migraine with it
Mine looks like multi coloured, prismatic lightning. It's rather annoying. Started happening a lot more since the sun came out for Spring the past few days, before that first time was a few months earlier.
Doctor Eye Health it’s weird for some reason mine kind of a pattern I get one in the spring summer and early fall. Like April, June and the middle of august
for me, it's as if my peripheral vision gets smaller and my mouth, nose, and/or hand goes numb. i was supposed to get a scan done to make sure i wasn't having seizures but they never got back to me. the first time i had that problem, i was in 7th grade in language arts. i was writing and my mouth was going numb and i was like "huh, that's weird...oh well" then my nose went numb. then, my peripheral vision got smaller. i was trying to write but i could hardly see it correctly. then my head started hurting and i got up to tell my teacher, who I'm still friends with, so i trusted him. when i stood up, i got dizzy and i could hardly see where i was going so i sat back down and told my friend "i think I'm dying lol". she told me to tell my teacher and i got up, stumbled to his desk, explained it to him, and he was like "oh lord- i have no idea. you'll have to go to the nurse. I'll have your friend walk you there to make sure you get there okay. the nurse gave me water and 2 salteens before having me call my mom and then sending me back to class.
And it's great that doctors don't automatically assume it's due to stress. I got migraines on day 6 of my period. The nurse said it was due to stress. I told my nurse that I always had a migraine on day 6 regardless whether or not I was stressed, and that I had it on no other day, not even if I was experiencing a great deal of stress. The nurse still held on to her belief that it was due to stress.
@@missanne2908 I kept complaining of migraine, and pressure in my head and that sneezing could make me stop to my knees in pain. I was told by a neurologist, it was probably behavioral and hormonal and taking birth control pills would be his recommendation. I was so upset that he said fine, he’d do an MRI. Well wouldn’t you know I have chiari malformation and all my issues are because of it and birth control was never going to help. I do still have pain and they say it’s hemiplegic migraine.
I know, right?! I went through 5 neurologist complaining of visual disturbances and they all referred me to the psych ward. It was the eye doctor that finally diagnosed my migraines.
I've been suffering from this eye migraine for 5 years already.I tried telling my parents about this but they always say that I used too much cellphone that's why.I don't know what's happening to me until I saw this one, thanks I'll be able to explain to my parents about this.
I know of three teenage boys who have migraines. One has to go to the hospital when it happens. Next time you are at the doctors for anything, just mention it to the doctor and ask can they help you. Or, can they send you to someone for help. If your parents won't take you serious, that is. Do you live in or near NC? If so, there is a doctor in raleigh who works with these patients.
I have that condition...with no physical pain or aches, just the visual aura alone. They occur randomly...perhaps six times a year or less. Lasts about 3-4 minutes. Both eyes are effected. Thank you for this important information!
Me too! I also have the splitting headache migraines, but never in combination with the visual migraine. The visual ones are just annoying. First time I freaked out though
Your aura graphic was fuzzier than mine which is sharp edged, a beautiful group of lines and triangles. Sometimes black and white, sometimes coloured, like a hanging lead crystal prism.
Same here, but for the last forty years all mine have been in black and white. I can almost set my watch to how long they will last (twenty minutes, btw). Never had the headaches, it was an Excedrin commercial a few years back that keyed me to what it was when they showed the visual effects. I've learned to kick back and enjoy the show and the somewhat euphoric effect, feels like my mind has moved three inches to the left of my body. After all this time I still can't pin point what triggers it; I've had at times one a day for a week straight, a couple a week, once a month, once in a couple of years, even had two in one day (which was really weird). But, what was really disconcerting was the one time it went from right-to-left, inside left-to-right. I'll count myself lucky that it's only going crossed eyed for twenty minutes and nothing more.
I get these multiple times a month, I can see it when my eyes are closed, too! I’ve even had dreams of having one and wake up to actually experiencing aura.
This is exactly what has happened to me for the last 20 years, first noticed in 2002 when I was in the eighth grade and I was sitting in the classroom.
Thank you Dr Allen for the aura demonstration...it was spot on!! I find that the glare from headlights or sunshine flashing through the trees while driving almost always triggers a ocular migraine. I really enjoy your channel ☺
And many times I get them for no reason at all. I just get them. I think it must be human nature to try to figure out what is causing them. Over the years I have blamed them on a ton of things. I started with a brain tumor and went from there.
I can totally see that too! Ever hear of Charles Bonnet syndrome?? Its when people with vision loss start seeing shapes where their good vision used to be.
This happened to me yesterday. My left field of vision. I had a migraine onset two days prior, medicated with imitrex the day before, then suddenly got super dizzy and started seeing colors with vision/coordination loss for 20 - 30 minutes out of nowhere - no head pain, but a dry, painful feeling in my left eye. Tried eye drops, no help. Just had to wait it out. I was afraid I was going to have a seizure, but nothing triggered this and I was not losing my balance I just couldn't really focus or see for awhile. First time in 10 years of experiencing "eyegrains" that I have ever had this very psychedelic aura response.
Kaleidoscope! Yes! I have had these many times. Its exactly how I described it. I remember being extremely tired and lacking sleep whenever they occurred. Thanks for this video!!

I describe it like looking up through a pane of glass, and somebody has poured a puddle of water onto it and is shimmering it around. Mine are usually accompanied by an out of body feeling as though my hands don't belong to me, and slurred speech.
Joe Gibbs my speech usually slurs a bit too and i make no sense. my mom thought i was having a stroke the first few times it happened, but my doc said it was normal for the speech to be kinda funked up with a migraine
Joe Gibbs Yes!!! It looks like a puddle of mercury swimming around my eye. Then I see flashing colors that look like panes of glass . Usually I have a panic attack and lay down. I can still see the flashing with my eyes closed. Thank you for your comments. I don’t feel alone in this now. 👀
I see the flashing with my eyes closed too. It was bery very scarey. No headache or no slurred speech. Just had a bad panic attack as it was happening.

I think I had a minor panic attack the first time. It was scary because I had no idea what was going on. But when I'd experienced a few it was just a case of sitting down and waiting it out. As soon as I see that little pin prick of light I know exactly what's coming and I've got a few minutes warning to pull the car over or whatever. 20 minutes or so normally and then I feel totally fine.
I experienced mine with visual and hearing loss. I thought I was going deaf and blind at the same time. It's terrifying once you dont know tf is going on
Yep. I left my experience with it below. I was terrified until I saw my eye doctor. She explained it as any other migraine, but that you can literally see it coming! Prescribed sleep and better nutrition, and thankfully for me that did the trick. I was terrified when it first started though.
mine was with blindness from the rainbow aura and then a loud deafening ringing that drowned out all other noise around me to where all i heard was the piercing ringing. I was at work working on a Machine, had to totally step back and stop and sit down in the middle of the floor and hit the emergency stop on the machine. I was totally blind. scared the crap outta me.
At 5yrs old I experienced a devastating migraine with aura attack, I remember waking up stretched out on the couch with a cold cloth on my forehead and my mom trying to give me baby aspirin and water. Our home was really stressful, insane domestic violence happened every day and I would get sick when I was most scared so I knew my episodes were related to stress. It's tough to explain what's happening when you are that young, eventually, I started getting punished for saying that I was sick, I was told that I was trying to get out of chores so I tried to keep it to myself as much as possible. Thanks for sharing this information, great video.
Hey I just wanted to say thank you for sharing. Stress like that as a kid is horrible. I know I struggled through some tough family and domestic issues growing up too. Either way, I appreciate you for sharing that.
Sometimes I wake up with one and can ‘see’ the aura before I even open my eyes. Your animation of the multi coloured zig zag crescent was spot on for mine.
I have had a migraine with aura 2 times when I woke up and it freaked me out. Not a great thing to wake up to in the morning and it set the tone for those days!
I have often seen the aura in my sleep and that wakes me up and then sure enough the migraine hits like a knife in the back of my head. That multi colored zig zag aura is exactly what I see and the pulsing of it makes me nauseous. I have found that putting an ice pack on the back of my head helps it go away faster. When I do get the aura all I want in the world is to be in complete total darkness as any light source seems to make it so much worse.
Taking 2 Motrin as soon as the blind spot begins helps to deter the headache that would usually follow for me. Im 43 and have had these since high school. This usually always works for me although it does not get rid of the aura. I always need to ride it out.
Vishwas Agarwal for me it really does. I take 2 motrin at the onset of the blind spot. My aura lasts about 30 minutes but no headache will occur after my aura if I take the motrin right away.
I had my first one of these this morning. Terrifying. I've been getting migraines for about a year, but never with the scintillating scotoma (aura). I took my 10 mg of orally dissolving Rizatriptan and was able to mostly avoid the worst of the migraine that I knew was coming. Aleve works well too, but nothing touches Rizatriptan as a migraine abortive (for me).
I'm not even partway through the video, and I'm already so grateful that there is information on this because I believe I just experienced one and I feel more relaxed being able to identify it and seek further help.
This was reassuring as I just experienced a retinal aura. Knowing it will usually go away on its own helped me not to panic. Haven’t gotten the headache yet & hope I don’t, but I will definitely see my doctor to see if they can determine why I had it. This is my 5th one so far but it’s been about 8 years since my last one. Thanks Doc! 👍
Finally! I found an answer to this weird phenomenon in my eyes. The first time I experienced this about a decade ago I thought I was going blind. It was nuts. I call it the ‘broken glass snake.’ It started as a small flickering kaleidoscope that began to expand and took on the appearance of a snake. It reminded me of looking through a cracked window. I closed my eyes and could still see it. That’s was the scary part. After about 10 mins it faded away. They always start in my my left eye and then shift to the right eye. I still get them every once in a while but I do not get the headaches. My first reaction was too much screen time on the computer. But then I thought, nah, if that’s the case I probably should get them more often. They happen about every two months. Fortunately I have not experienced it while driving. I tried describing these events to a couple optometrists when I needed new glasses, but they had no idea what I was talking about and looked at me like I was loon. I think it’s time to find a well-versed eye doctor and not rely on these eye check-up testers who work at visions centers that try to sell you $500 Ray Ban glasses! Thank you, Dr. Allen!
It's called a scintillating scotoma. You need an ophthalmologist to look at it, which is a doctor of the eye and not an optometrist who just deals with vision correction. I first started having them in like 1979 before computer screens. As you get older, the scotomas come and go without accompanying headaches but I still suffer from regular migraines. Sometimes I get these scotomas 2 or 3 in a row in less than 2 ours. Can be really frustrating.
@@tsicby , thanks Johnny! That’s exactly what it is. I looked it up and saw a animated depiction of it. I’ll take your advice a look into an ophthalmologist.
I called mine the "Flashing snake" when I was a little kid. Mine start out as a tiny pulsating rainbow arc with a slow pulsing side and a fast side that get larger and larger over 20-30 min. There is always a part that is zig zag yellow and black. The amount of rainbow and yellow/black varies. Sometimes the colored areas are very large and intense and I enjoy looking at them very much. I've had them thousands of times over my 65 years and never have had a headache with one. I have zero problems driving when I'm having one, it's just a little light arc. I can see through and around it fine. If you are worried about them, go see an actual eye doctor.
When I first started seeing these auras they were always followed by the migraine headache. That was nearly 40 years ago. I reframed my appreciation for this warning signal so that I could get off the road or seek a quiet place to lie down which made my migraines far less intense and of less duration. By learning some meditation and breathing techniques I was able to reduce the migraine experience to just a short headache lasting perhaps 10 minutes to finally having no headaches at all but I still get the auras. Now when they come, I take just a few moments or minutes to stop what I’m doing change my breathing and the aura is usually diminished within a few minutes instead of lasting over an hour which they used to do. Mine seem to be related to low blood sugar or the release of tension that I’ve been holding in my neck and shoulders. It is comforting, and sad, to find out that there are many others who also suffer with this experience. Thank you for this informative video.
Can I ask what kind of meditation & breathing techniques did you do? My headache after experiencing the aura usually lasts up to 2 hours long, even with medication help. The throbbing is also very intense & make me feel nausea too :( need help
LN I’m saddened to hear that you are in pain sometimes. I don’ know if this will help or not but over time things did eventually get better for me. For me what really helped was to lie down on the earth if possible. If it is not possible then imagine yourself in a safe place outdoors with your body on the earth. Roll up a small/face towel and place it under the neck so it is supported. Close eyes . Let the breath naturally slow and deepen. Allow your awareness to attach to the rhythm of the breath while also allowing relaxation to loosen as much tension as you can. In this deeply relaxed state imagine channels of energy, however you may see or experience it in this session, to begin to slowly flow from the forehead gently downwards along the scalp as if it were long hair spreading out onto the earth...either the real earth under you or the imagined earth. Allow this to feel like a waterfall in slow motion as the energy channels from the forehead and face along your scalp then down and INTO the earth. Imagine the earth helping to generate this flow as it receives the streams of energy from your head. Do this for as long as you are guided to do so or for as long as you can maintain the experience. When you feel cleansed, re-focus on the deep rhythmic breathing and very, very slowly begin to become aware again of your surroundings but keeping your eyes closed. If the aura pattern is still there then go back in and repeat the process if you can. Try not to come back to a fully awakened state until the aura is gone. If the aura is gone, then move to a quiet place with little to no stimulation and continue to remain relaxed for as long as possible. Over time this exercise gets easier and more effective. Eventually I was able to tap into my recollection of the process even when I could not lie down. I could, with eyes closed and focused breathing still do it even in a public place if necessary, but only after many practice sessions. Drinking some warm, sweet herbal tea ( not hot or with stimulants ) before this exercise was helpful if I caught it early enough, but more important was to get horizontal and on the earth if possible. I even carried a hand towel with me in case I ever needed to take a “time out”. Supporting the neck is important so make sure you have a good way of doing so. If possible a cool damp cloth over the eyes was often helpful but don’t let it become a distraction.... just doing the breathing and energy work was more important. One more thing; HOW you envision those energy streams moving from forehead to earth may change... from session to session or even within a single session. It is best to allow whatever visualization you come up with for that moment and just try to witness and go with whatever form the energy streams want to take... just remain as attentive but relaxed as you can... just let the feeling of the flowing of the energy be what holds your attention. I hope that helps. For me it was not instantaneous relief, but there was improvement within and after the session. More importantly there was improvement over time with each event generally being less intense and of shorter duration. Not every one, but over the years yes. After about 3 years of applying this process I could interrupt and drastically reduce these migraines to be a minor inconvenience that would resolve completely in 15-20 minutes, even less time as I continued to practice. I hope you can find something that will work for you too. 💖🙏💜
@@greenspiritarts thank you so much for explaining it in details, greatly appreciated it! I'll definitely try what you suggested, really hope it works after some practice❤️❤️ Once again, thanks for taking the time to help me out! :")
Just experienced this for the first time in my life of 29 yrs.....I literally thought I was going blind...it suddenly happened and lasted about 30 minutes. I tried figuring out what it was and couldn't find anything til your video. Thanks for making me feel better and that I'm not going blind😭
Wow, EXACTLY my experience, I'm 29 as well, as the blind spot slowly enlarged (visible in both eyes) I was concerned the vision may not return but then it expanded beyond my periphery and finally disappeared in just under a half hour. First time it has happened in my life as well. The colored triangles and such around the outside and the flashing are quite an experience, so glad I was able to find confirmation of what's going on without a trip to the ER like I first imagined was going to be necessary.
@@chadjacob8479 Sounds just like mine. This is my 3rd one in probably 6-8 months so seems like it had a pattern of happening every 2-3 months. I'm 28 and the first one just looked like TV static. Really freaked me out. 3rd one had a lot of color to it towards the end and was flashing. Wondering if I should see a doctor
@@sean48611 i know this is extremely late but if you really haven’t: yes, go get some advice from a doctor and get it checked out even if its just migraines! if you already did, how has it been? i suffer from migraine auras about once a month and i will never stop being terrified of them ever.
I'm so happy that I've found an explanation to this phenomenon, when I saw the thumbnail I immediatly recognised the thing that you've tried to represent. I've had this exact aura with migrane happen to me twice in life. It was a small blind spot, comperable to an imprint in your vision after looking at a bright light, that was getting bigger and bigger into a 'C' shape with a kind of zig-zagy or fuzzy texture. It lasted for about an hour or a bit more and then when it left my vision I had a terrible headache lasting about 3 hours. When I had experienced it for the first and then the second time I was terrified of this recurring who knows what thing, but now at least this video has calmed down my worries a bit. Thanks!
I was really scared when I experienced this for the first time today. The animations of what the aura look like were hugely helpful to explain what I was experiencing to my family. Thank you for making this video!
@@LaraSchilling I honestly had no idea so many had the same problem - even the exact same C shape on the left eye! Goddamn that fuzzy little demon! The amount of times ive been ready, about to leave the house, and the tiny little fuzz shows up, and i have to tell my friends ive got to lie in a dark room for the next 4 hours - theyre always so confused. And theres the times you find yourself in a situation where youre out and theres nowhere to go, now that is literal hell for me. I had it recently where i was just landing on a plane( not a fan of planes so i was fairly stressed) and i started getting the fuzz - had to go through passport control blind, and then a busy train for 45 mins before i could lie down, honestly thought i was going to die lol. Sometimes ill look at a lightbulb or something by accident and get an after image, and even though i know its not a migraine i panic that it might be one xD. ( sorry for the long message btw, i never get to vent to someone who truely understands! )
This is probably the best way i've seen/heard this explained. I have trouble explaining it to people when I go through it because its SO difficult to tell someone what I see when theyve never had it happen to them. I almost always get a migraine AFTER but not usually ever before.
I have had migraines since I’m 13 and I’m in my 70s. I started getting migraines with aura’s about 30 years ago. After menopause my headaches tend not to be as painful, but I still continue to get auras-sometimes with a headache and sometimes without. After keeping a diary, I discovered I average about 4 a month. I’ve learned to deal with them, but they’re hard for other people to understand.
I had my first one when I was in primary school, I had to read out loud in class and wasn't able to because the words had disappeared. then when I looked up, everything was only half visible. Incredibly scary for a 10 year old. It's how my migraines always start, a warning sign to get myself in bed as quick as I can.
So relatable! I had the same thing, had to read out loud in class and I said I couldn’t read it but the teacher thought I was just exaggerating, later I got the headache and asked to go home but they still wouldn’t believe me. Had to sit through it for 2 hours. Now as soon as I see the aura’s I take a painkiller and go to bed. I’m glad I had my mother telling me what those aura’s were.
@@Diedela Oh poor you that must have been awful. I hate my auras, but they are a great warning system. When I notice I can't see properly (I usually check my hand) I know I need to take medication and get in bed pronto!
Same thing happened to me. I noticed this first time when I was in high school reading out loud in the class and suddenly things started fading beginning with a faded black spot and later developing into a bright zigzag arc shaped line. I managed to complete the reading of my part with the partial vision. But it caused a lot of distress to me. Second time it happened after 5 years from first incident and after that it became a regular occurring pattern once in few months. It was very difficult for me to convey this to the doctors (both Ophthalmologist / Neurologist) because they didn’t find anything abnormal in my eyes. When I explained this issue, they never believed. I found that too much concentration or stressful thinking triggered this aura migraine for me.
@@santoshrajput23 It's horrible, isn't it? It always reminds me of when on a tv program they try to make someone unrecognisable, or blur something out. They will often use the same kind of zigzag patterned shape. Good job on finding your triggers! Hope the migraines will become less and less for you.
I’ve experience this many times. I learned to get rid of it fairly quickly by massaging an acupuncture point between the thumb and pointer finger in the muscle. I vigorously massage that spot on both hands for 15 minutes or so. It has always relieved the auras and keeps it from going into a headache.
I've experienced this twice now. While it was a while ago, it seriously freaked me out. I had absolutely no knowledge of what was going on. Thanks for the info!
I've had classic migraines with aura since I was 14. In my early 50's I also started getting ocular migraines as well. I averaged about 1 a week. No medication ever helped the migraines. In May I reluctantly started taking a statin to reduce my cholesterol. A side effect for so e people is reduced migraines. So far I'm 5 months migraine free!
Statins also relax muscular tissue. Some migraines are caused by spasms in an artery going into the head. Makes sense the statins relieved this. I put Voltarin on my neck if a migraine is starting. Does the job.
Had a aura yesterday but no headache no vomiting, my migraines have really reduced in the last ten years I'm 62.Only people who experience migraines know the suffering, like you no medication helps whatsoever.
A Magnesium supplement is also a great idea. I've had migraines since I was 6...It wasn't until pregnancy when my OBGYN prescribed 400 mg of Magnesium daily as a substitute for my traditional medication routine.
I have migraines with aura once every few years. I've found that it helps me if I go in a dark, silent room and sleep. I also experience nausea because of the crazy headaches.
HALWG51 same here. But my auras are little and last seconds to minutes im going crazy cause i dont know if this is still aura cause it doesn’t expand to whole vision. Do you know anything about this?
Thank you for the excellent illustration of how the aura visually appears. Your video will be useful to those of us who need to show medical professionals what we are experiencing, as it's difficult to describe verbally. I personally only get these every 4 or 5 years, thankfully not more often. Dehydration, fatigue and eating salty foods are possible triggers. My advice to other sufferers is to 1. Don't panic 2. Try to lie down somewhere comfortable. 3. Ride it out by resting. Typically they shouldn't last longer than 15-30 mins. 4. If it lasts more than an hour do as Dr Allen suggests - visit a Doctor ASAP just to rule out possible causes and put your mind at rest.
I had these without the headache when I was pregnant with my second child, it scared the living crud out of me until we figured out what they were. One I had just picked up my toddler after work and I had to park in a parking lot and try to keep her entertained while I was trying to keep calm and let it pass.
I had migraines while pregnant they were awful vice like pains and nosebleeds and vomiting. After the birth never had one since. I will never forget how awful they were.no visual symptoms though .
Honestly I wish they had stuck around instead of the full-on migraines. There's nothing quite like your head being in too much pain to move or open your eyes, and vertigo making you feel like you're falling off your bed.
I have been having these since I was in my teens. Never knew what they were or how to describe them to my doctor to find out what they were. I see them in both eyes at the same time. Always gray with twitters around the edges. I actually think they are in my brain and not my eyes since I know I see them in both eyes at the same time. I have tried closing one eye and then the other but I can always still see them. No pain. I am so glad to finally have someone talk about them. At this point in my life (I am 80) I feel very comfortable that mine are harmless. I can go years without having one. And then I may have several in a short time. Never, ever any pain.
My experience is pretty much identical to yours. All visual and no pain. I had the first one when I was 35 and it scared the heck out of me and I'm 68 and still have them once in a while. Sometimes a few days in a row and then not for a few weeks. Years ago I ran across an article from a Swedish doctor that described them perfectly and he said they were a side effect of having a hole in the heart !
Pretty much the same for me except that as a teenager I actually went numb in half of my body for about 30 min. before it progressed to a horrible headache for hours. The numbness and headaches stopped after my teens, but I still get the eye squiggles occasionally, at least, thankfully, no pain. I am 73
I’ve had the same experience since I was in my early teens…no migraines, just the visual aura in both eyes. I got them less frequently as an adult, but I still get one once in a while in my 60s. Mine last about 20 minutes from start to finish.
That's what I get, too. It's only happened twice and I'm 66. No pain or anything. I never mentioned it to my doctor since there's nothing to be done about it.
I'm 63, male, and had my first of these aura experiences just over 2 years ago. It was very frightening and I was advised by NHS helpline to go straight to A and E because I might be having a stroke, which I did. After waiting some considerable time i was seen by a doctor who confirmed I had not had a stroke. They didn't offer any explanation and never mentioned the word migraine. I've since visited my optician who examined my eyes and said there was nothing wrong, other than my pre existing ocular hypertension but the aura weren't caused by that. Your description and animation are very accurate. It starts as a small part of my vision, near the centre, that seems to disappear, for example a letter of a word if I'm reading something. This then expands to form a small bright zig zag line and then expands to form a shimmering curved rainbow effect that arcs around the top right or left of my field of vision. Over about five to eight minutes that shimmering rainbow then slowly moves down to the side of my vision and then disappears quite quickly. I never have any headache before during or after the experience and I feel normal afterwards. It does make you feel very anxious but after you've had a few you know what to expect. I have about 2 of these events per year. It's very reassuring to know that I'm not alone in suffering them but I do wonder what causes it and why this should start in my older age. It's also interesting that none of the health professionals that I spoke to mentioned or seemed to know about ocular migraine other than my optician. Thanks so much for your video.
I'm now 65 and had my first aura when I was about 14 years old. They are hereditary I think. I used to get terrible migraine headaches after the aura went away but realized that the stress from expecting this actually caused the headache! Upon drinking more water and just relaxing, I haven't experienced the headache afterwards for about 40 years now. I still get the aura about 3 times a year but it's now just a small inconvenience that lasts about 20 minutes. I hope more people can benefit from what I learned.
Saya juga pertama kali terkena penyakit seperti ini di umur 14 tahun, dan sekarang umur saya 31tahun Saya dari indonesia Tolong berikan solusi agar penyakit ini tidak kambuh kembali 🙏🏻
I used to have all these all the time. It would start in my peripheral vision as smeared/moving flashing visions. It would slowly grow to tunnel vision causing flashing moving smears and shapes. I haven’t had one since I was in high school 8 years ago. I used to have to get checked out and get someone to pick me up and then later on have someone bring me back to my school so I could get my truck cause of course, I could drive it at the time. Anyone who has this, don’t panic. I used to panic and it made it worse. I finally was able to Just close my eyes and lay my head down and enjoy the “light show” and it passes in no time. So please use that tip and stay calmed and relax.
Camden, mine were just the opposite- they'd sort of start in the center & spread out. When they were past my field of vision I knew they were over. The human body is a crazy thing....
Damn! That animation was so realistic my eyes are now feeling like they do towards the end of an aura. I guess that means it’s time for a nap. What a shame.
Raymond Heckard I don’t feel so, if I go in dark, I still see that patch dancing. Even I have sometimes woken up from a dream of migraine finding that I actually had it. I see the patch even with my eyes closed.
Of course can still see them in the dark people, but for some (me too) it shortens the duration. Some people light is a trigger and an intensifier. I get them from bright lights sometimes.
@@compulsivecommenter990 Yeah. Everyone is different. What works for some doesnt work for others. Some people caffiene relieves them. Me it gives them to me.
I'm 15 years old, with a diagnosed panic disorder. I started having this when I was like 13, when it first happened it scared me to death, I was, and still am so afraid of going blind. But knowing that im not the only person experiencing this, and that theres a name for this helps a lot. The visual aura shows up in both my eyes, but it always in my left feild of vision, it just continuously flashes, like static. It forms as a small dot at first. But then evolves into a C shape, it normally lasts from anywhere to 5-60 minutes. This one time, it lasted a good 30 minutes, then went away, then came back, i was actually so scared. I havent really told anyone but my parents, and once my neurologist. I also have severe vertigo and am in the process of diagnosing it. I've had MRIs done, and have an EEG scheduled to test for seizures. I hope this will all stop, its really scary. But even if it doesnt go away, i'm going to continue living, and not let this get in my way of doing things I enjoy. I really appreciate this video, it makes me feel a whoel lot safer, thank you.
Good for you, not letting it keep you from doing what you want! I don't let it slow me down either. I rarely get a headache so I am very thankful for that.
Ah, sweetie, there are medications to help prevent the symptoms and to stop them when they start. Talk to your neurologist about them and don’t suffer with the headaches or auras. They can be treated so they’re not so bad. I promise it can be better. Talk about them so people know what’s happening to you and can help you get rest and in a quiet place when you need it. Be better.
When mine start up, I take two advil (ibuprophen) and a cup of black coffee, I grab an ice pack and put it on the back of my neck and lie down. This usually gets rid of the headache in about 1/2 hour. Taking a magnesium supplement stopped my vertigo. I was fortunate that I had doctors tell me this.
Watching this during an occular migraine episode. First time I had this happen I was freaking out, calling my mom to drive me to the ER and had a panic attack. After I learned about this, I’m just chilling here waiting for it to pass.
Same (happening right now, just about to pass). I freaked out (quiet internal panic moment) the first time it happened to me but I kept quiet about it. Happened at work. I thought for sure it was a brain tumor or something bad like that! Spent quite some time trying to search and identify what was happening. It wasn't until I ran across a pic on a search that turned out to be from the Wikipedia article on Migraines that I finally find what I could not articulate. I never thought "migraine" as I never get a headache when it happens.
The first time it happened to me, I called my mom and she told me to call an ambulance. She came over when they got there and watched my 5 month old daughter while they checked me out. They told me I was fine and to go to the Dr. So I went to the Dr and they gave me an MRI. Turns out I have a cyst on my pituitary gland and they think that's what triggers it sometimes. It sucks.
I've been having these symptoms since 2008, so its really nice to finally but a name to the symptoms, When it happens its because I've been hit in the eyes with a glint of light from a shiny surface. The description was bang on, it's like you've got TV interference in your eyes and when I close them I can see rainbow spirals, I've found the best way to get over them is to go and laydown and shut my eyes for 30mins to an hour. As for the actual migraine I only ever get the pain the day after at the back of my head and I also feel drained of energy.
@@Dreamer-tj3zt I started having migraines July 21, 1986 but I thought they were just bad headaches because I never heard of a migraine. The pain was so bad. One day I went blind in my left peripheral and another time my nose got numb. I never went to the doctor. I didn't start to have an aura until a few years later just before I would get a migraine. The aura was in both my eyes. My vision was like when a person is putting in gas and you can see the fumes of the gas and everyone had 2 sets eyes, noses and mouths. Finally after years of having migraines I don't have them anymore. I had cluster migraines.
Found your channel because just a minute ago I experienced it for the first time. I got so nervous and started searching about this beautiful zigzag on the corner of my eye. There's no migraine actually. It lasted for 10 mins thanks God 🙏🙏🙏 my heartbeat slowed down while listening to you 😅😘
I had horrible migraines as a teen and in my early 20s. As I got older, the headaches stopped, but I developed the aura. Now that is the only symptom I get. I never did identify a consistent trigger, but now that I’m perimenopausal, they seem to have disappeared. They were definitely scary at first!
Had meningitis 7 years ago which has left me with constant tinnitus and frequent migraine headaches. Just coming out of a two day migraine and have had my first visual aura. Started off with small black and white zigzags and turned into a multi coloured half circle zigzag in both eyes. Quite spectacular. Thanks for the info, really well explained.
You just described my experience with what I know as Scatomas. Mine have never lasted more than 10-15 min tops and I've been having them since childhood. I am now 78. They are a nuisance but I only have about 5 or 6 a year. I never have a headache. My dad used to get these. He was a physician so his experience helped to relax me about the whole thing.
Well, I'm 75 years old and I've been having retinal migranes for so many years, I treat it like an old friend. It's usually in only one eye. It's a nuisance and I consider myself very lucky that I generally don't get a headache with it. I was really surprised by your visual representation. I've never seen anything like that except from what happens in my head. Thanks for your work
I had migraines for years. Fortunately, I found relief (almost a cure!) by not eating MSG, and hidden MSG ingredients. I’ve had a few relapses, but have been headache free for about 700 days. Just wanted to share this in case it helps someone. Relief’s out there folks, you’ll find it. Keep going, and know that you’ll be okay. ❤️

So it's labeled under different names. If you look up "Hidden Names for MSG" there are lists online about it. Most people don't have a issue with MSG, but I personally know three people who cut it out of their diet and completely stopped having migraines, so it's definitely worth looking into!

I was searching up, "what it looks like looking through a kaleidoscope" and this video popped up, and this is exactly what I experience with my auras, last night was the first time I had them twice, hours apart and once in each eye, it was also the first time i have actually noticed all the different colors on my auras. This was the best video representation I have came across. Thank you!
I am 62. I had my first ocular migraine several years ago. I saw my eye doctor the same day and she diagnosed this, saying she also gets them! I had the symptoms at random intervals for a few years. It always began with a small bright spot in the center of my vision field, then it would grow into jagged lightning lines, which lasted about 20 minutes before they gradually moved to the edges and disappeared. I never had a headache with these symptoms. I had some strokes 2 years ago and I was prescribed daily aspirin. I have not had an ocular migraine since then, and my neurologist confirmed that some people who take daily aspirin have noticed that it prevents ocular migraines.
YES i had that years ago and thought i was having a stroke and drove myself to the hospital! They didn't know what happened and sent me on my way. Thanks for the video!
This was one of the best explanations I’ve seen! I get retinal migraines intermittently. No headache, but my speech is affected. My triggers are excessive emotional stress, panic attacks, excessive caffeine, and sugar substitutes. It sucks.
I've been getting migraines since I was a teenager. It starts with a minute blind spot, so much so that if I looked you in the face, part of your face would be blanked out. After some time, I begin to see flashing, zig zag lights, after they stop the pain begins. I suffered for years and unfortunately I can't take any of the newer class of migraine medications because of contraindications from other medication I am on so I suffered in silence for many years. Happily I am now taking a prescription drug called Topiramate that was originally meant to treat seasures but has been found to be very effective for the treatment of migraines. It has been a godsend. I have been migraine free for three plus years now with no unpleasant side effects. I learned of this medication from an optometrist that I worked with who also suffered from debilitating migraines. Might be worth asking your doctor about. 😁

I get these all of the time and they used to lead to migraines that would be debilitating for about 8 hours and then make me feel clumsy for around 2 days. I have learned to skip the migraine part by closing my eyes (keeping eyes closed but not shut tight) and putting my face up to a bright light and evening the light out left to right. Did it once by accident and now I do it every time I get one of the "auras" and I havent had the migraine part since doing this (going on 8 years). I only say this in case it helps someone else. Don't know if I just by coincidence lost the migraines naturally at the same time I closed my eyes because of a steady bright light while having one. But, either way it's been a blessing to me. (should add that I did go to the doctor and they did give me the preventative stuff. Only took it once though before the bright light thing. Haven't used it since finding this trick that works for me.)
interesting. That matches my experience that it helps me to look at my phone. The last thing you want to do when you have an aura is read emails (doesn't really work anyway), but just looking at whats app has been helpful somehow. Thanks for sharing this!
I have had them about 2 per year since 1985. They do not develop all the way nowadays, as I have found ways to stop them. They actually started after a bike accident, when a child ran on the bike path and I swerved and ran into a lamp post, then landed very roughly on my head. Exactly then, these symptoms appeard for the first time. After that, they came when triggered mainly by heat and stress. They are followed by word loss. I have to relearn some words afterwards. Also the accident caused an f/v confusion in my brain. In the German language the f and v sounds are the same. So I now always have to think about the morphology of the word when it starts with the f sound before writing it. A while ago I had some memory issue in the morning (could not remember the liscence no. of my dad's first car when I saw a similar one parked nearby. That was weird.) and then after a few hours it started. @@montecristo7963
I find that especially on days when we go from a (atmospheric) low pressure system to a high pressure system (think very sunny, very dry cold winter day) I will usually get one and sometimes two aura migraines. It is like you describe, starting with a blind spot except that it is more like a colorful, vibrating ring (not necessarily a complete ring) of pins and needles that are tight together at first and then over about 15 to 20 minutes, the ring will expand and disappear. I can locate it in my field of vision by staring straight ahead and if I cover my right eye, it is still there, if I cover my left eye, it is still there. I can "see" it even when I close my eyes, a ring of flickering, vibrating colorful pins and needles. They used to be followed by a bad headache but now they go away and I do not have headaches. I am 61 years old and can remember having these since my early teens.
I had one of these and thought it was an absolutely isolated and solitary experience. Then I explained it to my friend who has frequent bad migraines, and he was like "Yep, I've had these all the time". I can now sympathize with him greatly.
Most migraines are due to MAGIC and a demonic Jinn-Shayateen 👽🧞 It's why Muslim's pray 5 time's a to have a strong impenetrable aura around them from spells! th-cam.com/video/SI4CScs4D2Q/w-d-xo.html If a Muslim prays well 5 time's a day they're protected from the attempts of Magic unless Allah doesn't want one to be protected. th-cam.com/video/SI4CScs4D2Q/w-d-xo.html
Strong lights and visual stress can also trigger it, right on the spot or later, up to one-two days. In my experience, the aura starts in one point and then expand in the field of vision like a wave rippling through water. After it passes, the area gradually gets back to normal, so that there also is a waning"wake" of visual overexcitation (like after staring at a bright light) where the front of the wave has passed. Though it mostly affects the visual cortex, it can also affect other areas, like tact, or movement, or other functions (memory or language). In the first case, you stop being able to move certain muscles, for example you can't raise your thumb anymore, then it ripples through that too, so that in a couple of minures you can move your thumb again, but your index finger has stopped working, and so on, until it stops. In the others, you can get temporary loss of memory for numbers or dates or names, or temporary afasia. The non-visual auras lasts around the same as the visual aura, and leave usually weaker migraine afterwards. Ibuprofen works for me to almost cancel the migraine; it is such a boon that I only use Ibuprofen for that, and nothing else.
Having had hormonal monthly migraines with scintillating scotoma for 30 years, I now, post menopause, have only this aura left eye without headache. In my opinion women have a much higher incidence due to hormonal influence. Jeanne
I had this happen a month ago. Then it happened this morning. Went to the eye doctor today and he said exactly what you said it was. Came home and it happened again. Very weird feeling. Your illustration of what we see is spot on! Glad I found your page.
Thanks for explaining this phenomenon. I, too, have had these visual episodes since I was 8. I don't get headaches after an episode, thankfully. Mine are often triggered by glare from sunlight on a white surface like snow or a window behind something or someone I'm looking at. They usually go away in about 15 minutes. Thanks again for explaining it. 🙂
I experienced an ocular migraine. No headache but a blind spot began near center left in field of vision. It then expanded to something that kinda freaked me out. I would describe it as what looked like a kaleidoscope around the periphery of my vision in both eyes that was very bright & very colorful. Lasted about 1/2 an hr. Got fully checked out & no incidence since but pretty unnerving for sure. I will say I had been having trouble getting a good nights sleep for a while beforehand as I was REALLY busy at wk. Given a very low dosage of melatonin 3 mg (sleep aid) & haven't had it happen again. Had no idea what was happening at the time though. It was reassuring to be able to I.D. what it was.
James, I've had several over the past few years. Thanks to the internet, I finally have learned about it. I have aura with no headache; but when I "see" it coming on, it's so disturbing I just go lie down for 30-45 minutes.
I've been having the same thing happen every so often, for the last 3 years or so. no headache, but like a kaleidoscope starting in a corner of one of my eyes, slowly becoming more circular, the working it way out the the edges of the eye..takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to settle and go away.
I've experience this ocular migraine before and don't know what it was. But with the illustration and explanation, now I know what it is. And for me stress and less sleep triggers it.
I had my first one in my late 60's. Very frightening, but absolutely beautiful. I saw a kaleidoscope of shimmering purple solid circles. No pain at all. My GP sent me straight to the hospital for scans etc. By the end of the afternoon I had a diagnosis. Have had two much shorter ones since.
Thank you Dr. No one that hasnt had migraine with aura understands. You explained it so well! This video really cope with my experiences with migraines with aura. Thank you soooo much!
I just starting have ocular migraines. It's so scary.i can't afford to go to the Dr. This video showed my family members what I see when this is happening to me. Thank you very much
I have a few of these per year. My aura starts small and grows to a large C shape before subsiding as described in the video. It is made of black and white jaggy lines that move continuously. Lasts about one hour and ends with me feeling like crap for several hours. No headache though.
Likewise. It happens usually after physical exercise. I haven't experienced it since I started taking magnesium citrate (300mg magnesium) twice a day. Worth trying. Fixed my muscle cramps, too!
I also experience the aura a few times a year as you described, without a headache. When I see the aura starting, I take a couple of Excedrin Migraine pills. Without the pills, my aura can last up to an hour, and take over most of my vision. With the (tylenol, aspirin, caffeine) pills, the aura fades within 5 or 10 minutes. Besides the C shape, and what I like to call the Shimmering Fence, I get Transparent Fan Blades.
I too get these on occasion and last about 15 minutes. If I don’t take two Advil’s right at the beginning I will have a constant headache for one or two days. I noticed the last two times it happened that I had taken a 10 mg Melatonin the night before. Hope this can help others. Thank you for your video
Thank you. I have had this bright zigzag geometric object start in my eye and grow large. And it scared me, I found that it went away if I was able to close my eyes and rest for an hour. I was glad to be told by you that this was normal and not dangerous. I have been going regularly to an eye doctor for years due to high eye pressure. And recently was operated in both eyes to put in a drain to lower pressure.
I get migraines with aura and after a process of elimination, I found that these are triggered by a change in my sleep pattern (lack of sleep) and/or increased levels of emotional stress. Thanks for the video
Some friendly feed back, please put a warning before the flashing aura demonstration. Flashing like that can trigger migraines or seizures in some people. Then I wanted to share some additional info. People who have hemiplegic migraines can get an aura that lasts 2-5 days followed by headache that lasts up to a month, but normally 4-7 days. This type of headache also causes nystagmas and one pupil to dilate while the other is normal and reacts to light. (you wouldn'tbelieve the number of head CTs and MRI's I've gotten over the years because my hemiplegic migraine symptoms scare doctors into thinking I have a bleed or stroke.) Migraines can cause permanent visual snow and/or permanent photosensitivity if you have them for years and years. This happened to me. I've had frequent migraines since childhood. And yes I got all the brain scans in the world and saw eye drs before they decided it was migraines that caused it. I have a heart condition so can't take triptans, then after years with antiepileptic drugs I had to stop those because they caused gastroparesis :/ No other migraine prevention drugs have worked for me. I want to try botox next. The other very important thing to be aware of is that in very very rare cases migraines can cause blindness. Basically during a migraine there is changes to blood flow and in some rare cases it can get cut off to some nerves. Most of the time it's temporary but if it happens over a long period like over 4 hours it can permanently damage the nerves. So my neuro explained to me that if I go totally blind during a migraine and the blindness lasts over 4 hours I have to go to ER for steroids to prevent it becoming permanent. The same can happen if a person goes completely deaf during a migraine. I do sometimes go completely blind during migraines but so far it hasn't lasted more than 30 min. when it's happened. If anyone here has severe migraines it's worth it to find a neuro that specializes in migraines. People don't realize that untreated frequent and severe migraine can cause permanent issues and I did not even know this until I saw a specialist. If you are at risk for status migraine or ever go totally blind or deaf with your migraines, get a letter from a neuro that details their recommended emergency treatment plus the dr contact info. It makes ER trips so much easier and you get drugs faster.
Have you gotten the CGRP's from your doctor yet? I have gotten several samples. And theres more down the turnpike. They have both preventative and acute now.

This is one of the best and concise descriptions of the ocular migraine. I always had migraines-I'm a woman, so the migraines would always correspond with TOM, but I got my first ever ocular migraine 2 months ago. I was so frightened I went to see a doctor. My aura lasted 6 minutes and was followed by a headache. I will say that the headache was less intense than the regular migraines I get. I get them 9 times out of 10 months-courtesy of womanhood. And my maternal grandma had migraines and no one else in the family has it. I developed my first headache at the age of 4, before I could even read. Thank you genes.
I go through aura migraine since childhood and it took me over 20 years to find out what it was. In my case, it happens in both eyes and it covers 100% of my vision in milliseconds. I feel down in the middle of the street several times and doctors always said I was out of my mind and what I was describing didn't exist at all. It doesn't really matter how many times you go through this, it's always extremely frightening. It's good to see people talking about it, no one should ever hear things like I did, from doctors, especially when you're in pain - which, in my case, is insane - and fear.
62 years old and I remember having migraines at 12. I've had migraine that resulted in hospital visits and stays. I've had migraines that last a few hours and some that last days, had one that lasted several months. 3 years ago I started eating a low carb diet and I haven't had a single migraine since.
This is really interesting. I hadn't had sugar in a while and just had a bunch of sweets last night. I have had 3 of these episodes today. Scares the crap out of me. I was wondering if it was the sugar! Thanks for the tip.
I get these occular migranes 1-2 times per year. The visual is geometric and colorful and always starts small. It takes 5-10 minutes for it to move forward and completely pass me. It never blocks my vision because it is transparent. I have never had a head ache afterward. It started 15 years ago and doesn't bother me anymore. I find that the more relaxed I am, the faster it goes by.
Whew, I wondered what was happening to me. I've had these for years, luckily there was no pain afterwards though. Because they were very sporadic and a long time between episodes I wasn't too concerned. Thank you for the information Doc.

Does anemia cause blurry or grainy vision?
God Loves Me and You seems like anemia I recommend (CBC blood test) to you
@@everyonespro Thank u. I think I did the test before and it was good..

You are not alone. I'm a man by the way, but this fucking migraine is so painful that I can't help but cry.
It’s a neurological issue in your visual field, not an eye issue. If it continues go to a neurologist instead!

and that there’s actually people who can relate

It is absolutely terrifying when it happens, especially when I am on the metro or far from home and then all of a sudden can’t see.
I don't go anywhere without ibuprofen. I did once and the headache was so bad. It felt like someone wearing golf cleats trying to kick my eyes out.
Thanks for sharing, for me it has always been to eat something and drink something and then lay down.
Mine exactly when im not hydrated and im active i get them
I’ve suffered from migraines with aura for like 2 years I think but I have the aura first but then a silent migraine later in the day
Being dehydrated can definitely cause it, pushing your body to hard especially when dehydrated will do it. The chiropractor worked for me for awhile.
LOL... I just had my first one. Past week I’ve been drinking at least a ballon a day.
Triggers for me :
1) Dehydration
2) Improper sitting & sleeping postures
3) Physical strain
4) Upset stomach
Lack of sleep for a week
Acidentally drinking pepsi out of blue
For me It's lack of sleep, dehydration and weather changes
Too much sleep will do it for me and sadly anything over 7 hours can do it.
You scared the shit out of me when you showed an example of what the Aura looks like. Thank god I now know that I’m not alone in this and will be fine. How’s everybody’s day going?
Terrible since I got this headache😅
Watching his example..I was scared to hell that migraine will attack me again 😭
Those are super realistic that my heart stopped for a sec.... It's like triggering my head even though it's not
@UJJAWAL CHOUDHURY U pointed that exactly correct! It's a nightmare 😑. A good sleep is the only way that it gets away once it gets!
It is comforting knowing that I'm not the only freak. LOL. Visuals, headache and very hightened emotions/depression knowing how small my very existence is. at least I know what to expect.
You were more caring about this than any doctors I've talked to about it.
Omg couldn’t agree more ,
The vast majority of doctors don't know what it is.

My eye doctor says they are ocular migraines. They are mostly annoying, but like an earthquake, you wonder how long they will last and will they come back right away.
Have you figured out what causes this and how to stop them? Any supplements or foods that help?

It's so GREAT that doctors actually believe in migraines, and treating them, these days.

Of course you are seeing this with closed eyes because it is happening in your brain, not environment :d
Did you figure it out what causes it? And did it cure? I have it too, but my eyes were healthy...
Same, mine are definitely connected to my cycle.
This is exactly what has happened to me for the last 20 years, first noticed in 2002 when I was in the eighth grade and I was sitting in the classroom.
@@JolajnaLoja I think you mean not in your eye.
Thank you Dr Allen for the aura demonstration...it was spot on!! I find that the glare from headlights or sunshine flashing through the trees while driving almost always triggers a ocular migraine.
I really enjoy your channel ☺
"Spot on" ...Was that an intentional pun?
Yeah I find the light from the eye exam gives me a migraine also
And many times I get them for no reason at all. I just get them. I think it must be human nature to try to figure out what is causing them. Over the years I have blamed them on a ton of things. I started with a brain tumor and went from there.
I swear I thought I was hallucinating when this happened to me!!! Looked like a kaleidoscope
I can totally see that too! Ever hear of Charles Bonnet syndrome?? Its when people with vision loss start seeing shapes where their good vision used to be.
I was so scared when it happened to me. I also thought I was hallucinating.
I was gonna call the ambulance
Kaleidoscope! Yes! I have had these many times. Its exactly how I described it. I remember being extremely tired and lacking sleep whenever they occurred. Thanks for this video!!
I describe it like looking up through a pane of glass, and somebody has poured a puddle of water onto it and is shimmering it around.
Mine are usually accompanied by an out of body feeling as though my hands don't belong to me, and slurred speech.
The slurred speech would worry me. I usually feel pretty sluggish though
It's terrifying once you dont know tf is going on
Same man
wut hearing loss? im lucky i never experienced that
@@rafiy7150 yup it feels so weird
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you so much for your kind words, and I'm sorry you had those experiences as well, you are an inspiration.
@@dawnhewitt1We all go through it. Very few well functioning families out there. It just makes it so YOUR family never experiences it.
Sometimes I wake up with one and can ‘see’ the aura before I even open my eyes. Your animation of the multi coloured zig zag crescent was spot on for mine.
Yes!! I’ve dreamt I see the aura and wake up to it actually happening!
@@shellihurd2090 It’s really miserable Shelli. Must try that tip with the ice pack. Take care.
@@shellihurd2090 There's nothing worse than waking up with a headache!
My aura is almost gone... Which means that Thor's hammer should come smashing into my head any minute now.
Paramax turns Thors hammer into rubber. You’ll still get a headache but with 95% less pain.
Taking 2 Motrin as soon as the blind spot begins helps to deter the headache that would usually follow for me. Im 43 and have had these since high school. This usually always works for me although it does not get rid of the aura. I always need to ride it out.
@@christinecurtis5167 it really works??
Same. I thought I was going blind and call it broken glass.
@A J Wow. Interesting about Casinate. Since I put milk back in my diet, my dryspell ended and started getting them again. Weed for the win.

Hey Monica! Glad you found the video and that it eased your worries a bit. Do you regularly get migraines or headaches?
Wow, EXACTLY my experience, I'm 29 as well, as the blind spot slowly enlarged (visible in both eyes) I was concerned the vision may not return but then it expanded beyond my periphery and finally disappeared in just under a half hour. First time it has happened in my life as well. The colored triangles and such around the outside and the flashing are quite an experience, so glad I was able to find confirmation of what's going on without a trip to the ER like I first imagined was going to be necessary.

Thanks!

This is probably the best way i've seen/heard this explained. I have trouble explaining it to people when I go through it because its SO difficult to tell someone what I see when theyve never had it happen to them. I almost always get a migraine AFTER but not usually ever before.
Hey thanks for saying that! yeah these types of migraines are no fun.
Yes u r absolutely true
Help me please
I'm 40 and I don't get headaches anymore, but I have the aura a lot. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@@EvelineUK indeed, those aura's are a convenient warning system.
Thank you for this - very useful to know.
I've heard this but never feel like I'm doing it right and l don't have the patience to keep it up for long.

I started getting ocular migraines too during my second pregnancy. It scared me too, but I’m glad that it’s temporary.
Honestly I wish they had stuck around instead of the full-on migraines. There's nothing quite like your head being in too much pain to move or open your eyes, and vertigo making you feel like you're falling off your bed.
Same!!! Only while pregnant
I had the first one when I was 35 and it scared the
heck out of me and I'm 68 and still have them once in a while. Sometimes a few days in a row and then not for a few weeks.
Years ago I ran across an article from a Swedish doctor that described them perfectly and he said they were a side effect
of having a hole in the heart !
I've been having them in my 20s without a headache but slightly nauseous

Thanks Camden! Wise words
But headache pains more. And Fer headaches i feel vomit
I go into a dark room with zero light and it cuts the optical migraine short . No input helps the go away fast.
Raymond Heckard I don’t feel so, if I go in dark, I still see that patch dancing. Even I have sometimes woken up from a dream of migraine finding that I actually had it. I see the patch even with my eyes closed.
It helps. When I get them at work I end up covering my eye with my hand.
Of course can still see them in the dark people, but for some (me too) it shortens the duration. Some people light is a trigger and an intensifier. I get them from bright lights sometimes.

I rarely get a headache so I am very thankful for that.
we almost have the same story, just got done suffering with aura for 5 mins
Ah, sweetie, there are medications to help prevent the symptoms and to stop them when they start. Talk to your neurologist about them and don’t suffer with the headaches or auras. They can be treated so they’re not so bad. I promise it can be better. Talk about them so people know what’s happening to you and can help you get rest and in a quiet place when you need it. Be better.
@@zuzuspetals9281 it can be treated??? how?
When mine start up, I take two advil (ibuprophen) and a cup of black coffee, I grab an ice pack and put it on the back of my neck and lie down. This usually gets rid of the headache in about 1/2 hour. Taking a magnesium supplement stopped my vertigo. I was fortunate that I had doctors tell me this.
Watching this during an occular migraine episode. First time I had this happen I was freaking out, calling my mom to drive me to the ER and had a panic attack. After I learned about this, I’m just chilling here waiting for it to pass.
That is what you gotta do! You figured it out.
That’s the year mine started too. Interesting. I too have to lie down & wait for it to go. Thankfully don’t get a pain migraine
My symptoms and relief are exactly like yours, I rarely get a headache afterward even though I suffer from regular migraines, go figure
That's what I do as well.
Found your channel because just a minute ago I experienced it for the first time. I got so nervous and started searching about this beautiful zigzag on the corner of my eye. There's no migraine actually. It lasted for 10 mins thanks God 🙏🙏🙏 my heartbeat slowed down while listening to you 😅😘
Sorry you had to experience that, but I'm glad you found some helpful information!
I had horrible migraines as a teen and in my early 20s. As I got older, the headaches stopped, but I developed the aura. Now that is the only symptom I get. I never did identify a consistent trigger, but now that I’m perimenopausal, they seem to have disappeared. They were definitely scary at first!
How many times you experienced the aura in your life ??
The aura is also the only symptom I have. I have NEVER had pain.
Thank you so much! I thought i was having a fu**ing stroke! Now the aura is fading away I’m feeling a migraine comming on!😢
Migraine is better then a stroke at least
@UJJAWAL CHOUDHURY yes exactly same for me
@@lunawolfheart336 Eh I mean technically sure but strokes generally aren't chronic
That is a super tip. There is also some newer research about citric acid as a preservative that causes migraines
What is msg?
@@krisztinaszabo6727 Monosodium Glutamate. It's a flavor enhancer that's put into a lot of American foods. The FDA doesn't require it to be labeled unless there's certain percentage in the food. So it's labeled under different names. If you look up "Hidden Names for MSG" there are lists online about it. Most people don't have a issue with MSG, but I personally know three people who cut it out of their diet and completely stopped having migraines, so it's definitely worth looking into!
@@julietharris2373 I went vegan for a while and my migraines stopped. I did this because I wanted to cut out MSG, but it became too complicated to distiguish which foods didn't have it and vegan was easier.
In Europe it's called E621.

It sucks.
I thought caffeine was supposed to help? Dang. My triggers are lack of sleep and estrogen. Menopause turned out to be a blessing for me.
I think caffeine cause mine.
@@kathieoray2990 it’s seriously so crazy to see how many people are affected by this! Pre internet is when I was getting mine and I seriously thought I was the only person on the planet experiencing it! I would try to describe what I was going through and people thought I was nuts
My triggers are a certain combination of ingredients within a certain range, regardless of what meals I eat…
Causes I've identified are: Posture - resting my head with my hand, either from the lower jaw or under the cheak bones;
bright PC monitors in dark rooms; headlights while night driving;
alcoholism (no alcohol-free days); dyhydration; not hydrated enough before exercise, and little sleep.
Oh this is me all the way the lights while driving at night and maybe the drinking everyday is not helping at all hell even looking at cellphone I have to turn backlighting all the way down or
ahh now it make sense. i always rest my head with my hand. thanks for your comment man i really appreciate it.
I'm going to try this next time I have an aura, since I know mine are light-triggered. Thanks for sharing!
interesting. That matches my experience that it helps me to look at my phone. The last thing you want to do when you have an aura is read emails (doesn't really work anyway), but just looking at whats app has been helpful somehow. Thanks for sharing this!
looking at a computer screen or phone will trigger mine. As will a glare off a bright object outside. @@susannedawi7266
How many times you experienced them in your life ?

Yes Me Too. Everything you just said I experience too
Absolutely! When mine happens when the barometric pressure drops.
I am 27-year-old the same symptoms😥
Yes I remember when the season changes, I suffer auro migraine.
I had one of these and thought it was an absolutely isolated and solitary experience. Then I explained it to my friend who has frequent bad migraines, and he was like "Yep, I've had these all the time". I can now sympathize with him greatly.
Most migraines are due to MAGIC and a demonic Jinn-Shayateen 👽🧞
It's why Muslim's pray 5 time's a to have a strong impenetrable aura around them from spells!

If a Muslim prays well 5 time's a day they're protected from the attempts of Magic unless Allah doesn't want one to be protected.
th-cam.com/video/SI4CScs4D2Q/w-d-xo.html
Same for me. Triggered by sunlight, a bright light in my peripheral or my phone!
And for me stress and less sleep triggers it.
how many times came bro

I had my first one in my late 60's. Very frightening, but absolutely beautiful. I saw a kaleidoscope of shimmering purple solid circles. No pain at all. My GP sent me straight to the hospital for scans etc. By the end of the afternoon I had a diagnosis. Have had two much shorter ones since.

I have a few of these per year. My aura starts small and grows to a large C shape before subsiding as described in the video. It is made of black and white jaggy lines that move continuously. Lasts about one hour and ends with me feeling like crap for several hours. No headache though.
Me too! Football shaped jaggy “electric” lines that get bigger over time. No headache, I just go lay down until it goes away. My mom gets them too.
Likewise. It happens usually after physical exercise. I haven't experienced it since I started taking magnesium citrate (300mg magnesium) twice a day. Worth trying. Fixed my muscle cramps, too!
Exactly I feel exhausted but without the headache
(you wouldn'tbelieve the number of head CTs and MRI's I've gotten over the years because my hemiplegic migraine symptoms scare doctors into thinking I have a bleed or stroke.)
Migraines can cause permanent visual snow and/or permanent photosensitivity if you have them for years and years.
Thanks this is useful to know.
Have you gotten the CGRP's from your doctor yet? I have gotten several samples. And theres more down the turnpike. They have both preventative and acute now.
1. There is some deficiency in my body or there is access of something in my body
2. i need to change my life style and my diet.
I started hard this time . I exercise daily for 40-45 min mostly cardio. And i have a very balanced diet i have stoped eating junk food and i m taking zinc , magnesium and calcium alongwith some vitamins for supplemnts.(i take them on alternate days )
Its been a year. i have not experienced any migrane .
Glad you found the video! Thanks for sharing your story. I feel so lucky to only get them once in a great while.
This is my exact experience. 🙋🏻♀️
Whew, I wondered what was happening to me. I've had these for years, luckily there was no pain afterwards though. Because they were very sporadic and a long time between episodes I wasn't too concerned. Thank you for the information Doc.
