Ed recently said the second he laid eyes on his daughter, he knew he wanted to get healthier in every way he could to be the best father & husband he could be. He started working out regularly, stopped drinking & going out much & works more regular hours instead of going for 12 or more hours in studio. You're right that he's talking about his bad habits leading to his wife & daughter, & like the sun, burning away all the bad parts of himself til he's left with his true self in the light of the sun. It's such a fun catchy way of presenting pretty deep lyrics, especially considering this song was a last minute add to the album!

I just watched an interview where Ed said between going to a friend's funeral and having a baby he had to grow up. So naturally he dresses up as a vampire and makes a dance tune! Love him! Remember he also came out with Supermarket Flowers and Visiting Hours, both beautiful. Ed will be making beautiful music for a long time. Being married and a father he'll have more life experiences to pull from. I'm excited to be here for it!
the "YOU" in the lyrics basically meant his old self, the one who didn't take care of himself, drank to much, used some drugs, ate junk; stayed up too late with the wrong kind of "friends! etc. The part of himself he overcame after finding his love, becoming a dad and making better choices for himself because his goals changed ... wanting to be a good husband and especially a good, present and healthy father for his (at that point) kid
