NIO ES6 Battery Swap in Beijing, China on 12/28/19

  • I had the opportunity to road test the NIO ES6 electric SUV in Beijing, China on December 27th & 28th, 2019. NIO has battery sway stations established in strategic locations in China so their customers can have their empty battery swapped for a fully-charged one in under six minutes - and it's free. Here, I had my battery swapped so I could continue my road-test drive around the Beijing area.

What a way to cut the charging times on ev's. Nio is doing a magnificent job to ease up the charging for end user. Not only this fast battery swap. But also the service that they will come and reload your car when ever you want to. Sad to see that the funding is a problem and the company is burning cash at supersonic speeds. Bet the China party won't let this one off their hands even Tesla is a big YES in China as well. I want to see them both succeed. Maybe Nio even more on a short term since there is really no stopping Tesla anymore.

I learned that in China...most people live in apartments not homes...and don't have chargers. So swap is fantastic over there. And also you never have to buy a new battery. It's great from customers point of view. Also NIO makes every battery the same size...so doesn't matter what vehicle you are in. @Victor Hugo So this took about 6 mins to use so let's say the maximum usage was 10 cars / hour. A Tesla Charges 0-100% with a supercharger in around 75mins? Nio has some two charge ports patents so bet they will put energy in the battery a bit faster than a supercharger. Also people do not swap only 0% batteries so you kind of make free money and save some time because there is charge left in the battery. So storage needed in a single unit for maximum usage would be around 10 batteries. But then again, if you see a line on the battery swap and there is a fast charger outside as well. You might not see too many lines on these stations. Also you have the app which most likely will if not all ready show you the fastest charging close to you. Also also also. If Nio company is bright enough. They could use these batteries also to cover the grid black outs and make a ton of money for that just because they own the infrastructure.

    I have a few doubts:
If there is no battery ready at the moment, do you have to wait around for a full one or get a partially charged battery? If yes, this does not sound good.
Are batteries always charged to 100% with this method? This would not be good for the batteries.
(meaning more degradation and costs for NIO)
One of the limiting factors for scaling EV is battery production. How many extra batteries need to be produced per swapping station?
Isn't it better for NIO to have more cars around with normal charging?
Can NIO change battery format or are they stuck with the current form since with other formats the swapping station would not work?
    Battery tech is evolving quickly.
Is the cost of a swapping station lower than the cost of the amount of chargers needed to have the same output of cars? If no, then it would mean that with the same investment by NIO, customers would have to wait more in queue for the swap compared to the time of charge in a normal charging point.

very impressive.. but I do have some concern here. First, the swap station has lot of mechanical and robot component. This looks like expensive to maintain. I heard, the customer is free to use the swap, which could eat a lot of company margin. Second, company to standby a lot of batteries for swap. Batteries is the most expensive part of the car. But customer only paying price for one car and battery.
I am also wondering why Tesla abandon swap in favor for supercharger? is it technology challenge or other concern?
Regardless this is very exciting and could turn into game changer if manage well.

To me this is a phenomenally stupid idea. It's so stupid I can't begin to explain it. But let's start with the mechanical reliability and cost of the battery-swapping machine, the inability to economically scale this process up to support millions of vehicles, the different size, shape, and capacity batteries needed for different vehicles, the difficulty in keeping an inventory of pre-charged batteries, even the amount of energy needed to operate the battery swapping machine. The real problem is that we currently have relatively poor fast-charging technology. That will change soon, and when it does, this amusing battery swapping idea will be no more than a historical footnote.

BigO Daddy not quite. If you have 10 cars pull up and the batteries are not charged underneath in the bays, then what? This works on small small scales, but it’s expensive with little benefit, and you need at least 10 packs per stall to make this feasible. You also still have to charge the batteries while they are in que too. so where do you hold them while they charge? If you have a brand new car and get swapped with an older battery, you just instantly dropped your cars value significantly. This is a very outdated idea that has been proven pointless since you can Supercharger so quickly or just charge at home and always have a full car. Road trips charge faster than you can eat in a Tesla. Tesla Killers don’t exist yet, but let’s hope Nio does well all the same. Battery swapping is one feature they will soon learn is not needed once their charge rates get better.
