NIO ES8 - $60k luxury Chinese EV SUV - Tesla competitor?

  • FINALLY I get to test the Epic NIO ES8 luxury electric SUV. So much has been written about the car, the company and is competitiveness to Tesla, but whats it like to drive and to sit inside?
    With a 0-100 time of 4.4 seconds and a 67kwh battery pack, this car has a PROPER range of 350km. Also we find out more about the smart assistant called NOMI.
    *I had to pay to rent this car myself, so its not a press car or anything like that.
    ABOUT ME: I'm Elliot, I love cars and love driving. I have been living in China for a while and want to share the cars that are only available in China to a global audience. I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I enjoy making it! Any suggestions for cars you would like me to test next, pop it in the comments :)
    *I am not being paid by anyone, not the manufacturers or the rental company, to make these videos.

    The Big Size is perfect for the USA. Great interior. The battery charging is considered very slow so I guess this is why they chose battery swapping instead. Not sure how that would work in the USA?!

    Its a decent car... but a Chinese brand currently needs to be much cheaper even in China. They could help do this by scrapping battery swap and free van charger. Which lets be honest if it is an electric van with a battery that comes to you to charge you it will cost them $200,000 a pop for the vans as the batteries will be enormous.

    • @electricelliotrichards
      @electricelliotrichards  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    As I watch you reverse without having to give the steering wheel a second thought, leaving you to concentrate on where you're going & the general surroundings, it makes me dislike Tesla's steering yoke even more. A driver should never have to pay more attention to the steering wheel than their surroundings, even if that is just for a few months until they become accustomed to the yoke. It's a matter of safety for all road users.

      In China, ppl do lots of road trips, and happy to give carpools to friends and coworkers. So, it is good that the car provides the configuration of 7 seaters.

  • @petearmstrong2778

    Imagine 10 to 15 years from now - EV is now driven by all/most - we would need a set of standards regarding recharging/battery swapping otherwise if manufacturers maintain bespoke standards and no compatibility with other manufacturers so much real estate will be required across countries to power these EVs. Currently vehicles need fossil fuels in a few variants (unleaded/super/diesel etc) from a single station. This could be an issue for EVs - need simple charging, simple payment all based on a single standard - the ideal? A problem to full adoption?

    • @jordan921927
      @jordan921927 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Range Range Range not horses. There are everywhere speed limits for what reason we need 600 Hp in family car???? would be best for me to have at least 700 km range instead of 600horse power. range is much more important then power when you don't have chargers on every corner or every 30km like currently gas stations are located every here iven in the small village. Going with family on vacation you need to have longe range to feel safe and you don't stop in the meddle nowhere. Idealy would be to have over 1000 km range to charge when is convenient not when is crucial and think about chargers every minute. I would charge when I will be hungry during long trip not every 3 hours .

      agreed, but this is not just a problem with E cars, it a problem for all cars ever since they were created, back in college i remember having this professor, a pride owner of a Prius, who constantly makes fun of the fact we have a speed limit of 100 km/h, yet most cars can easily go over 200km/h, and yet everyone complains about milage and worries about crashing to death.... this is just something to do with human nature, i cant define it, but im sure they are plenty psycholgical or scienticifcal research paper on this subject, human greed. how we let our desire to override basic logic. We do allow purchased of AR-15s for personal defences... that makes perfect logical sense. ;)

      I agree. I was looking for a critical comment instead of the sycophants. The car inside is NOT minimalist compared to a Tesla, especially the TM3. Leather is no longer cool. That eyeball voice assistant is annoying. When Tesla adds voice assistant I'm sure they are not going to install a baseball with eyes. Must be a Chinese thing. Maybe okay in China but this thing at 60k won't fly with these specs in America.

      er dun be mean..... have you ever test drove it or seen it on the street?? i just bought an ES6, test drove both model 3 and model x, and i already own a model s, so i can answer your doubts confidently.
      Other then tesla having better milage, its just feel better in almost every other aspect....but seriously unless you are into long-distance travel, if with a good charging habit, you won't feel any difference... plus Tesla do have larger battery, and you can upgrade the NIO to 85kwh, but again, its unnecessary. ...
      The biggest difference in range is tesla do have better aerodynamics, which also makes them less aesthetically pleasing, at least to me, Model X took me a long time to get used to looking at it, Model S is not bad, but its not amazing either.... however the model 3.. especially the interiors... im all for minimalism and stuff, but it's just so damn boring, feel like im sitting at a freaking cafe table... i mean there is literally nothing in it, so of course it's lighter and travels longer.... truth is i bought the tesla not i think its a pretty car, i bought it for the tech, and the tech really compensate for the aesthetics, but NIO just sort got both the look and the tech...
      maybe this is just my opinion, Nio just looks sick, the only sporty looking suv that i think is comparable would be a 200k Urus... the
      attention it captures is not like any car ive owned, just the other day, while i was washing the car, a cayenne owner just keep asking me about the car and how he love the look of it... i mean he owns a cayenne... a sick looking car that is three time the price, and yet he's so intrigued by my ES6....
      Tesla do have better autopilot, but nio is the closest thing, way better than BMW, Volvo, or whatever, and for me, i personally dont feel any difference, drives the same, park the same, and plus i don't even use autopilot other than traffic jams, which again, i can't tell any difference... NIO do have OTA, not sure how well it works, but it does have it.... and it got NOMI, maybe im just a loner geek, but having that faced AI to talk to while driving is just priceless... or actually it's 700usd as an optional accessory...
      As for the service, at least here in china, its not even comparable, NIO's service it's just so over the top, i personally think it's a bit too much. i guess it's the reason why it got a lot hate from within the industry, like Tesla, and probably to a higher extent, it cut off any possible middle man, the only none NIO personnel i met during my purchase was the bank loaner, who came to the NIO store to meet me... plus it has a lifetime warranty, and now with the introduction of the free battery swipe, you can drive the car for a lifetime if you want to... tesla's free charge is nice and sweet, but still its just not comparable, i meant electricity is pretty cheap, so the price difference can easily charge you for two lifetime...
      Im planning to sell my model s, but it depreciated so much, which literally become worthless after 30k miles, so im keeping it, but its been sitting in dust for a while now, thats how a Model S compared to the ES6, for me at least...
      sorry for the long reply, but im really love this car, and gets a bit defensive when people trash it, but it is hands down the best car i ever had... well i said the same thing when i first got my tesla, and tbh i would not even consider buying any car other than a Tesla, until nio came along... trust me, im a die hard Elon Musk fanboy, i almost felt like betraying my idol when i bought the car, but i did, thats how good the car is... im not trashing tesla at all, its undoubtly the pioneer, the start of it all, and it will continue to lead the game, but having NIO in the market is only good, it will just give us consumers, more choice, better quality and price, i just dont see anything negative of having NIO in the market to compete.

      China Driver I’m in Suzhou close to Shanghai. Last time i went to Harbin and experience about -4 degrees, it seems not effects a lot of the range. The most effects done by driving behaviour. Also using the air-con didn’t effect the range remarkable. Speed and acceleration makes the difference. My longest drive at the highway was 286km without closing anything, light, loud music and air-con everything used. But sometimes i have to be careful to reach even 230km. looks like the weather or wind conditions are a big range changer. I got my first battery swap in heavy snow conditions on the G2 highway near Wuxi February 2019 , there was no any problem. I got a video about. Just haven’t time to publish all my videos.
