Wow Jerry, I've seen lots of Wave videos but never one in the rain. The moody skies, the reflections in the pools and the dramatic colors of the rocks are incredible. Thanks for sharing!
Like you said this is the "Holy Grail' of hiking in the Southwestern United States. I hope someday I get to do this hike myself. Congrats to you and your friends. I'm sure video and photos don't show it justice to just how magnificent this play truly is.
Very nice video! Brought back some potent memories for me. I've been there 3 times, beginning around 20 years ago. Back then, (pre-TH-cam, Instagram, smartphones, GPS, etc) it was virtually unknown. As it was designated wilderness, cairns were not allowed (I was given instructions to destroy and scatter any that I found), and rangers were prevented from mentioning it or providing maps, just vague verbal directions if you brought it up to them. It was rare to see anyone else out there, and only about half of people who hiked in trying to find it actually did. One of my trips was in conditions similar to what you just had, and I also took shelter from the rain in that very spot. On my 2nd time out, I (along with 2 other hikers I met at The Wave) got to participate in a long rescue of a family of an elderly but fit father and 2 dehydrated and exhausted twenty-somethings who had barely the strength to get there, and then went the wrong direction on their way back. I'm really glad that you had the mud/rain to add a some adventure, as well as the wonderful color saturation boost that the water provides to the sandstone. Always enjoy following your travels and commentary! Hope to bump into you sometime out there :)
I´ve been there three times in the seventies. Now with my 80 years I´m back to see to see that land of wonder (but this time on my sofa). Thanks a lot, Jerry! Greetings from old Germany and happy eastern!
The colors are even more amazing with the rain. Nice musical accompaniment, Jerry, very evocative of the stunning beauty yiu captured here. No way would I have attempted that muddy road in there. And in the future the dried ruts will also be treacherous.
The music you chose adds so much to the incredible effect the scenery has on me. After years of not playing piano, I will go back, now that I have an awe inspiring incentive to revisit these pieces once more.
"We were definitely not going to leave you!" always enjoy your little bit of comedy! Tina would've loved that drive out and seeing you suffer everytime she looks to the right :D
I was here in the dead of summer a couple years back... Although a hassle I really appreciate the lottery system for this region. Its keeps the area from overcrowding and peaceful... I hope I get a chance to do this again!
What an amazing hike even with the rain. The Wave is astonishing beautiful beyond words to even discribe it. I think the rock looks better a little wet from the rain. Thank you for the video😊
I enjoyed this and all your videos! Thanks. I won a March 30-2023 Advanced Permit and didn’t think I could go because of the road. Luckily I found you could book a tour and leave the driving to them! I’m glad I did. We were the first to arrive. It was windy and snowy with some clearing. Epic memories and video!
Freaking awesome! I went to The Wave in 2007 and it was just straight yellow like you were talking about. Amazing to endure the rain storm and see such amazing color!
Nice! Took me 2 years to get my permit. Hiked it on Dec 1st, 2021. A sunny day. Big horn, neon buttes, hidden giant reflecting pool, secret second boneyard…lace rock, wild verbena…The Wave. Spectacular. Munched guac and chips sitting looking down at it. Will never forget this magical place.
This video was awesome! Not to mention funny. I’m so glad you got in and out without incident. The wave is beautiful even with weather conditions. Thanks for sharing with us.
Beautiful and awesome. Rain brings out the colors and the reflecting pools of water, and much smaller crowds. That looks like the same road to get to White Pocket that I visited a couple of years ago? Thanks for sharing.
Love watching your video! Hiked the wave myself earlier this year. We had to hire a guide to drive us to the trail and lead us on the hike. We luckily/unluckily encountered a huge snowstorm during the hike, so got to see the wave partially covered with snow, then fully covered 15 mins later. Definitely going back to check out the second wave and melody in the future when I get a chance. Your videos have been a true inspiration. Great quality with good humors.
Gotta say, have not seen a more colorful or well-defined video of this place. Or photo, for that matter. You are da man, Jerry. Impossible to overstate the magnificence of God's palette.
Awesome! Enjoy. It's an incredible area. If you have time, check out Wire Pass -> Buckskin (same trailhead as the wave) and White Pocket. (High clearance 4WD required). But even if you can't, the wave is worth it all by itself.
We had permits for February 28th and the road was crazy! Luckily, on the way in it was still frozen from the temperatures, but the way out was muck and mud. This was right after several days of snow storms to the area, melt off, rain, and then more snow. When we hiked there wasn’t any precipitation, but it was extremely windy. It took us 30 minutes to make that last stretch down the sand dune and up into the wave because every 30 seconds or so we could watch a gust of wind building and carrying sand with it coming our direction with speeds of at least 20 mph. That sand hurt, so we’d stop dead in our tracks, turn around and hunker down to wait out the wind. Then get up, try to run for 10 or so steps just to do it again. Seriously, I actually got blown down the wave while attempting to take a picture it was that crazy. It also means that my company (who are not hikers) chickened out for wanting to explore any of the other features so we headed back right afterward. Still bummed about what I missed out on, but that just means I need to work on finding my way back out there… and this time with my hiking buddies instead of family ;)
Enjoyed your experience. The hues and colors are so beautiful. I’ve drawn three permits in four years and hiked it a fourth time last October with my sister! Each time it is amazing! It’s pretty cool seeing it through another’s eyes for the first time! Never a dull moment with you and Clint!
We drove House Rock road on a day like that last March (in our Subaru Outback) -- we did have AT tires on it aired down a bit so I guess that helped, but after some initial trepidation, it was a hoot. We even ubered some people to the Wire Pass trailhead. And when we were done the car was an ungodly mess. We actually drove all the way south to the other end (the south end wasn't quite so bad) and came back through Kanab so we could hit a restaurant...and the car wash. In comparison to the mud pits in House Rock road, the road out to White Pocket (our destination that day) was a piece of cake. I was glad to see your video of House Rock since that's just about what it looked like when we were there, but we didn't get any video. As for the wave -- we haven't even tried. We don't live out there and the chances of a permit are low enough that it seems not worth the trouble of entering the lottery.
After seeing your video, I hope it rains when I get to go. Those colors. Oh, forgot about the road in. Scratch that. "We’ll wait a little bit, but then we gotta go"……. "We definitely were not going to leave you.” That cracked me up. Another well made, fun and entertaining video. Thanks!
This is our home turf and you’re right the colors are amazing when rocks are wet both in Coyote Buttes and at “Pahreah” town site. We drive HRVR 3-5 times each week and this winter season has been a real challenge. Local towing company could setup a substation on HRVR for the number of recoveries they’ve done there. Enjoyed your video.
At least you got it once. That's all I thought I'd get. And yeah, Tina kept telling me to 'just keep going' to white pocket. No thanks. That road just got worse the further in I went.
For sure the color pops because of the rain. I’ve been there twice (2008 & 2009) in October with great weather and it was “yellow”. lol. We did not explore around enough like you did; I really enjoyed your video.
Ha! I was pretty sure that I was going to be the one getting a ride out of there this time. I definitely prefer the conditions like when we ran into you guys.
Nov 9th 2022. When we left Kanab it was a full blown snow storm. When we arrived to the start of the access road it was a mix of rain and snow plus 40 mph winds. The 8.5 mile drive was like driving on a skating ring, a few times we nearly slipped into the trenches next to the rode. The weather when when started the hike was still a mix of rain and snow, below freezing temps and still the 40 mph winds. However, when we arrived at the Wave, the weather made a remarkable change and the clouds started breaking up and we had partial blue skies for the 3 hours we were there. With the very poor weather we counted less than 10 people going to and being at the Wave when we were there. That night back at Kanab, the park rangers said that access for that day had not been advised. Not only were the pictures taken a treasure, the adventure added to the story.
Same is true for frozen in the morning and melted in afternoon. I did it in a Honda CRV. South to 89a is better. White pockets would have been ok as it’s sand, not industrial lubricant…
If I could have made it (or had the guts to continue on HRR), I was hoping the sand to WP was actually better with the moisture. Didn't make it though; HRR just kept getting worse.
Dude. This is awesome, thank you for taking us along on your journeys. I am totally jealous of the chance at what looks like some absolutely awesome photography, or the chance to see for yourself one of the wonders of Arizona.
We tried for 2 years online and three times in person, to finally win it for Feb. 1, 2022. It was 10 degrees that morning and we were prepared for the cold. But what we weren't prepared for was the negative wind chill. We too went out early to beat the crowd, which didn't happen because people stay out there over night and we hit the wave right at sunrise. We didn't stay more than an hour because of the brutal negative winds. It was easily -20 and quite miserable LOL but we endured what we could and then headed out... stating one day we will be back. You were brave tho driving that road in the rain!
Kinda stinks you can't get a rain check, but it is what it is. The weather stinks, you still attempt it. As for brave, it's a fine line between brave and stupid. Not sure which side I was on.
I just won the online lottery for the wave two days ago. after four years. Mine is july 3 , very hot time of year , i sure thats why i got drawn , been in phoenix for the last 50 years so am used to the heat. cant wait great video, good idea getting the mud off, it turns to concrete if you let it dry to long.
I won too for July 3, group of 6 plus Ginger. We may see you there. Can't wait after 20 months of trying the wave lotteries, "Successful" is the most winning word I've heard in my entire life. Thank's God for the answered prayer.
@@emelynmaalamarcil1273 congratulations , i will be the lone 71 year old man doing his bucket list. glad its only a 6 mile up and back. leaves plenty of time to sit and admire mother natures work.
We were probably in the area at the same time. I checked out House Rock Road from the north but turned around. Came in to White Pocket from the south. Much easier. Stock first gen Tacoma pulling 16’ 2k lbs camper with a little clearance.
I actually called Clint and apologized for blaming him for the weather after getting rained out in the same area recently.....since he was in Texas at the time, I'm starting to think the bad weather may be my fault.
Hey Jerry, You mentioned make sure to have gps while treking to the wave. Do you think All Trails is good enough for using to get to the wave? Thx buddy. Always love your videos.
Probably. I use Gaia on my iPhone, but the Wave is a pretty straightforward hike. Just make sure you download it or whatever Alltrails version is where it doesn't require signal to show the route. (Not really that familiar with it, but I think it has an offline/satellite mode.) Gaia does not require cell signal and works off satellite.
What's crazy is that you get to experience these things not just multiple times but also through eyes of other people. Every time its not just "yeah I have been here before" and instead it is like one of those "unboxing videos" where you experience the thing that you know and watch people's mind being blown and especially your hiking buddies.
Yeah, the last two times we went was to take friends. Almost as much fun showing something amazing to a buddy as it is experiencing it for the first time yourself.
What time of year did you go? And did you air down? Going March 31 with my 4Runner. I’ve got all terrains, but trying to visualize what I might be dealing with. Thanks and great video!
This was March or April, I think. I didn't air down and never have although I've been on this road many times. This was the worst I've ever seen it. If it's not wet, you'll be fine. If it's wet....well, it depends on how adventurous you are. In these conditions, you couldn't get out of the ruts and it was really slick (due to the clay content, I think). I was genuinely terrified, but my Tacoma SR5 never struggled. If it's dry, you'll be fine. If it's really wet....it'll depend on your tires and tolerance for this type of driving. If you're worried when it comes up to the day, maybe look into a guide service. We saw plenty of them coming in when we were there and they didn't seem to mind the roads at all.
@@JerryArizona appreciate it! I have all terrains (wildpeaks) so I think it would be okay.. just trying to research to find the worst road conditions to gauge the worst
Yea the wife and I are going to try to go to the Wave this fall. Looks like our chances aren’t too good if you’ve been playing the lottery every month for five years!
My wife won it in person twice. Much better odds. But it's tough, for sure. Look into some other stuff in the area: Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch, White Pocket, Coyote Buttes South, etc. If you don't win, there are always other things to see.
Believe or not: In the seventies, on my way from old Germany to the Wave, I had to seek 2 days for the right way. Nobody in Moab would or could tell me the way. I met a parkranger and asked for the way. He laughed and told me: "You will never find it!" But I found it the next day. I have been the only person at that day in the Wave. And I had no permit!
Another story from the old German: I stayed 3 days in Nine Gables Inn in Kanab. Even there they didn´t know House Rock Valley Road or what I than called "Hidden Valley" .Today I believe they had a law there: "Don´t tell the way to these f.... Germans!"
The guy in the truck at the beginning said he drove it the day before (it poured that day) and that's where most of the mud on his truck came from. "You'll have no problem today. It's a lot better." is what he told us. I can't even imagine.
Looks like you stayed at Stateline Campground. How in the heck did you find the wave in the dark? Did you have to keep checking GPS coordinates. I have never seen House Rock Road that bad. Love the wet colors of the Wave. A new perspective.
I've been before and am really familiar with the area, so it wasn't hard to find. The road, on the other hand, wasn't so simple. Especially when you're a chicken-s$%* like me at off roading.
The colors were amazing! Consider yourself lucky that you had the opportunity to capture those great shots. Next time you should try to do it in a snow storm. The road wasn’t any better with snow and maybe worse. You go when you get the permit. You guys seem to have great luck with weather. On a side note, how did you drive into Long Dong Silver? The BLM in Hanksville told us we couldn’t drive in and had to go acids private land. Had to hike in from UT-24. Just curious and you can email if you don’t want to post here. You are lucky to be in your fifties. We now decades ahead and still going. It’s that experience that keeps us off of muddy roads. Thanks for sharing, it was a good video!😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍
There were absolutely no signs saying you couldn't drive to it. I've since heard you aren't supposed to cross the wash. There were plenty of signs saying where you couldn't go, so we took that to mean if there weren't signs, it was OK. No private property signs where we were. But plenty of tire tracks and footprints. Not that it's OK just because other people are doing it. Hopefully it wasn't breaking any rules, but I don't know how you'd know otherwise.
@@JerryArizona We going over to Capitol Reef in the next 2 or 3 weeks and we’ll give it a try! We have a drone and a 4Runner, the essential tools. Thanks for responding.😀👍
@@JerryArizona I made the mistake of calling the BLM in Hanksville plus they did a a lot of work on UT-24 after the flood last summer and I just missed the turn. We’re going to do the Mars Station and get better footage of Factory Butte so we’ll see what happens. You had Tina driving for you, maybe that’s the secret sauce!! She’s the STAR!!!!!😀😀😀👍👍👍
Wow, entering the lottery every month for 5 years... so it took you 60 tries before winning a permit! I feel your disappointment. I've been applying every month for a year and still nothing. The Wave is at the top of my bucket list so I will keep trying... congrats on finally winning a permit and thanks for sharing your adventure!
I’ve actually been lucky enough to go twice before. Those times my wife won the in person lottery. Much better odds. If you are able to try that, I recommend it. You can always check out other amazing stuff in the area if you don’t win.
Times change; I went to the Wave in December 2008 (a permit was still required then) and I had the place to myself. Next-day permit granted by Kanab BLM office. I wouldn't bother now, same as Utah NPs. Too many people. I enjoyed it while I could.
Jerry, question after winning the lottery did they mail you your permits or did you have to pick it up at the BLM. I would like to make the trip some day. I have applied a few times and haven't won yet. Just wondering because I would like to start the hiking early in the morning and not have to go to BLM then start hiking. Thanks for your videos
3rd. Went in person multiple times for the first. Tina got lucky (in person again) for the second. This time was just persistence. Seriously, 5 years of trying. Worth the effort.
@@JerryArizona I’ve been applying for the last two years. Twice in person in the gymnasium. No luck. Did you hear that the lottery money doesn’t benefit the national park service but instead a private company? Lawsuit pending asking for the return of everyone’s lottery money and other park reservation fees.
Wow Jerry, I've seen lots of Wave videos but never one in the rain. The moody skies, the reflections in the pools and the dramatic colors of the rocks are incredible. Thanks for sharing!

@@JerryArizona 😂 always an adventure !!
Another top-notch video.
❤

I just won the online lottery for the wave two days ago. after four years. Mine is july 3 , very hot time of year , i sure thats why i got drawn , been in phoenix for the last 50 years so am used to the heat. cant wait
great video, good idea getting the mud off, it turns to concrete if you let it dry to long.
Enjoy. It's full sun, so it'll be hot out there. But it's a pretty short hike.
@@robhebbs7960 wow, God is good! Hopefully, we can meet you there.
We were probably in the area at the same time. I checked out House Rock Road from the north but turned around. Came in to White Pocket from the south. Much easier. Stock first gen Tacoma pulling 16’ 2k lbs camper with a little clearance.
Crap. If I would've stuck with it, I probably would've made it. Not sure my nerves would have survived it though.
Ahahaha😂
The rain is his fault!
That cracked me up..
I actually called Clint and apologized for blaming him for the weather after getting rained out in the same area recently.....since he was in Texas at the time, I'm starting to think the bad weather may be my fault.
I love that area. We had harsh lighting when we went. I think I would have preferred the crappy weather you had. Dang I need to go back!
That's the thing about hiking with Clint; he always brings the weather. It's good for visuals....as long as you can survive it.
@@JerryArizona yikes, I've got a friend just like that. He's been known to attract disasters. It keeps life interesting 😁
Spectacular scenery!
@@JerryArizona thank you sir
What's crazy is that you get to experience these things not just multiple times but also through eyes of other people. Every time its not just "yeah I have been here before" and instead it is like one of those "unboxing videos" where you experience the thing that you know and watch people's mind being blown and especially your hiking buddies.
Yeah, the last two times we went was to take friends. Almost as much fun showing something amazing to a buddy as it is experiencing it for the first time yourself.
You seem to be hitting the bad weather lottery lately! Love your videos!
Another awesome video. But be sure to put Cottonwood Cove on your list of places to explore. We actually liked it more than the Wave.
It's on there. One of these days.
If you don't win, there are always other things to see.
this made me laugh a bunch, well done!
Great videos, just ask what camera you used? it's super clear. Thank you in advance!
Depends. Some GoPro 11, some Canon EOSR (35mm f1.8) and even a few iPhone shots when the lighting was really low.
@@JerryArizona Thank you, I appreciated it.
Germans!"
True. I asked at the ranger station years back (96) and practically had to beat it out of them. No maps, and this was before the lottery.
Wow the wave in the rain! amazing.
That is crazy... definitely the worst I have seen House Rock Road...
The guy in the truck at the beginning said he drove it the day before (it poured that day) and that's where most of the mud on his truck came from. "You'll have no problem today. It's a lot better." is what he told us. I can't even imagine.
What was the name of the campground you camped at? I've stayed at White House Campground and would love to try another in the area.
Stateline Campground. Right down the road from the trailhead. I think it's better laid out than the whitehouse one.
Thank you!
I wouldn't, but it would be neat to carry a surfboard in... :)
I hope one day i go there 😻 love your video. New subscriber.
Start playing the lottery. It's hard to win it, but it's worth it!
Very nice! Still trying to draw a permit!
Good luck! Takes a lot of luck and patience. (And $9/month)
It's still beautiful in the rain ❤
I thought it was more beautiful in the rain. So glad we went.
How long is that dirt road?
It actually goes all the way through. But I think it's 8~10 miles to the Wave trailhead. Too long for my liking.
The 🌊 is wet?
Thank you !
Times change; I went to the Wave in December 2008 (a permit was still required then) and I had the place to myself. Next-day permit granted by Kanab BLM office. I wouldn't bother now, same as Utah NPs. Too many people. I enjoyed it while I could.
great videos like always
It's hard to imagine that the locals used to go out there and party. Then it was just shut down on them.
They mailed the permits. I can't remember how long after winning.
I was under the impression this needed to be guided
You need a permit, but a guide is not required.
Glad I'm not the only one in the world that doesn't like mud 😂
I have the most capable vehicle and am still the least capable driver in those conditions. But we made it anyway.
Might want to get that truck detailed…
I decided it was easier to just trade it in on a 4Runner.....
Great adventure!!!
Imagine what it would look like at sunrise or a warm sunny sunset.
Totally awsome WOW
So many raffles through the years, even went there for 4 days and entered daily, never won.
It's good and bad. Good because it keeps the place from being overcrowded and getting destroyed. Bad because they're really, really hard to get.
You may have said it in another video, but what is Clint's channel called?
Clint's channel is The NotLostNomad. Go check him out.
Thanks!
I was about to say you need to go to big mac and the teepees!
That wasn't big mac. It's on the other side. We were going to, but Clint had a flight to catch.
@@JerryArizona I know! I've been there. that was a sloppy mini big mac you showed and you obviously put text that it wasn't big mac!
So is this your second or third trip to the wave?
Cool
3rd times a charm👍
