    In 1980, the road to Angel Arch was open to 4x4 vehicles. I took my wife and two young sons, one an infant only weeks old. There was a thunderstorm at Angel Arch, with echos through the canyons. On the way out, as the road bent around the canyon wall, I saw a small cloud of dirt floating in the air indicating an approaching vehicle. It turned out to be 3 guys on dirt bikes. They wore bandannas covering their mouth and noses. I stopped as we slowly moved past each other on the narrow road. Making eye contact with the lead driver, a moment of recognition. He dropped his mask and backpedaled the bike to speak to me through my open window. It was David Conley, a photographer for the Deseret News. I had met him only once before, when I was 15. We both grew up over 1,000 miles away in East Texas. His brother was my scoutmaster, and knowing I was interested in photography, had arranged for David to give me a tour of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City when my family passed through on the way to Yellowstone in 1973. Still the strangest meeting in the strangest place of my entire life.

      Crazy story! That place is absolutely incredible. And we definitely could've used that road for the last day. Long walks in the sand on what could be used as a road aren't my thing.

    You folks really are blessed, In the 1970's we had none of the nice gear, gps, what was that? Our tents were okay, and we could rappel but few did it. We did arches and Druid Arch but you guys are filling in not huge but immense gaps that I can only enjoy through you two, Not cool, but gorgeous, stupendous, stunning, glorious humbling, mind exploding, extravagant, outrageous, befuddling, and more. Not thanks, but gratitude.

    Thanks for taking us along. I've been to Island, Needles and Maze Districts, and when you said you were going to Angel Arch, it reminded me of something from back in the '70s or '80s, which was confirmed when we got there with you. I drove a rented 4-wheel drive back in there, and set up my tent within a short distance of where you were standing. I, however, drove through weeds, rather than hiking through rocks. Re. the Maze, I took the road in to the ranger station, then intended to hike down into the canyon, but chickened out when I realized how easily I could be found all dried up months later. I also got to the Doll House when I was on a 3-day whitewater rafting trip a few years later, and we stopped for a short break at the confluence of the Green and Colorado, and I climbed up a steep cliff to see it in person. That's the kind of scenery you don't get in northern IL, to say the least.

      This was one of our favorite backpacking trips. If you're interested, you'll need to do some research on the permits. They're overly complicated and you have to be ready when they go up because they go quick. Water and temperatures also add to the logistics. But so worth it.

    Thank you so much for such an excellent tour showing us this beautiful place, I paused this and finished streaming on my TV. I am going to put it on my list of hikes to do as I love deeper into backcountry hiking. What is really good is to point out what not to do such as not walking on sensitive areas, look but don't touch, enjoy and preserve. Always good to point out the animal tracks as we are visiting their domain, not claiming it. Great and looking forward to more, great job Jerry!

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an amazing place. Definitely look into the permit system because it's convoluted. Permits go up in windows (popular season and unpopular - hot - season) twice a year in blocks. So to get ideal conditions, you want to be ready. Not to mention it's very confusing to even find the permits on the website. I ended up having to call to clarify where to find the right link. Best of luck.

      When I was there in 1985, you could four-wheel past The Four Faces (IIRC, the end of the four-wheel road was at a waterfall named Upper Jump). You could also get to within a mile or so of Angel Arch, which, IIRC was up a different fork of Salt Creek. I hiked from the end of the road to All-American Man, but didn't get to the arches and ruins in the upper part of the drainage. It's an amazing place, with the combination of desert canyon scenery and all of the archaeological features.
      All American Man struck me as something you might have seen on a Greatful Dead album cover, sort of a psychedelic Uncle Sam, in red white and blue paint.

    Jerry and Tina we just sat down and watched this one on the big tv and loved it . We both were exhausted after watching and totally relate to that first time stepping out of the truck after a big hike . Our toughest to date was flat Iron. Well there was one in the Superstitions that bit us in the back side . 3 mile hike ended up being 11.5 after a wrong turn . May I recommend the Accend hiking poles with cork handles . I have abused mine for over a year . Thank you again!

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Supes are rough no matter what you hike. I'll look into those poles. We've had these for quite a while and they take a lot of abuse. Had an expensive pair of Black Diamond ones, but I immediately left them at a trailhead, so I stick to cheap.

      @@JerryArizona I think I paid 49$ or 59$ at REI
      Mine are aluminum . I like to do the downhill ski thing on those steep descents ha ha . I have the tension adjusted on the lock screws so that if you put a lot of weight on them they might slide together and inch . So I check them on the way down after Boulder jumping ha ha .

    Just came across this video. Brings back memories. I’m 62. In 1973 our family vacation was a trip to several national parks organized by my grandfather who roamed the West in his truck camper after retiring as a steelworker in Pittsburgh. One of our day trips on that trip was a Jeep tour to Angel Arch. At age 12, I remember our family of 6 piling into a Jeep wagoneer and spending the day 4-wheeling to Angel Arch. I can’t remember for certain but we may have viewed many of the ruins, arches and artwork that you included in your video. It’s interesting that the national park service no longer allows motorized vehicles in the area - a good move. I would love to make the trip on foot again. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Thank you; I was at Canyonlands in 1997. Didn't hike like you guys but after visiting all the other State parks in Utah, Canyonlands was my favorite (even better than the Grand Canyon) because of it's vastness and untouched beauty. Witnessed a small flash flood that came from a distance. Saw water falling like many spouts that eventually about a half an hour was gently starting to flow underfoot were we were hiking. down below there was a deluge of water in the parking lot. Returning to the park headquarters he told us that we witnessed something that less that 10% of people ever see. Now 73, Thank you for showing me what I may never see...I live in NJ. Excellent photography and great musical background.

    Hello from Ouray CO! Awesome scenery! Thank you very much for sharing this with us!
    We have a travel trailer that just arrived. Since most of our local forest service access has closed off now due to our snowfall, we will most likely head out to this UT area for some boondocking and hiking. I will plan to incorporate some of this area into our travels.
    Safe travels!

    Theres nothing like the awesomeness of Canyonlands. I lived there in 1975 and 1976. My husband inventoried many of those ruins. We lived in Needles and the Maze districts before we were transfered to Chaco Canyon. We were from back east and to me I felt like I had landed on some other planet. Enjoy, we did and in 1990 or so we introduced this special place to our 4 daughters. They loved Chesler park and the backcountry of Salt Creek.

      Amazing. We loved the fact that all the pottery shards, arrowheads, etc. were just left alone here. So many places we've visited have been pilfered. I can't even imagine what you found in the 70's.

    your right, never heard of it, 2nd time watching it, i mostly mt bike in moab but do some hiking to, will look into it ! but, since i camp in mcdowell mt park every spring and love the view of the 4 peaks, i will have to go up browns peak ! have done the flatiron and some hikes out of peralta which is to crowded for me. i have settled into yours and tina"s personalities, thanks for the inspiration from my couch in montana !

      Awesome! I love Browns Peak. Salt Creek was amazing, but I can't see how it works logistically without backpacking it. Maybe try Boulder Canyon trail to Battleship Mountain next time you're out in the Supes. Fewer people. Rogers Canyon is another lesser traveled route too. Or even something in the Goldfields.

      I just went 50 yards back and got her mittens. Adam carried you out of the Grand Canyon! I think point goes to him on this one. Angel Arch is a special place. The whole canyon is, but the ruins in the cave and Angel Arch were the high points for us. I think you can day hike it in from Cave Spring. Long hike, but not for super heroes like yourselves. Horse Canyon is right off of there too that looked pretty interesting. And here I thought Canyonlands was just about overlooks!

    Just discovered your channel. AWSOME!!! Southern Utah is one of my very favorite areas. As an amateur photographer I am very interested in your photography and gear. You should make a video of your camera gear, techniques and editing. Again great videos.

    • @JerryArizona

      I keep meaning to make one of those, but haven't gotten around to it. I actually work with a guy who does photography as a hobby, but is good enough to be professional. He taught me the basics of photography. I learned that I'm not great at that, but am decent at videography. I shoot mainly on GoPro's because they're convenient for this type of thing. I also have a Canon EOSR with a 35mm f1.8 that I love. Been using that more and more for videos as well. One of these days I'll get around to that video on techniques and gear.....

      @@JerryArizona Thanks for the rely. You are a very good videography. GoPros are amazing cameras. How are you shooting your time-lapse videos? I am now using a Lumix micro 4/3s because it has firm wear to make time-lapse in
      camera, and it is small and easy to carry, Again great videos!!

    • @JerryArizona

      @@oklahomacrudephotography4875 I use the GoPro's for most time lapses. But I also use the Canon for night lapses sometimes...If I can stay awake long enough to do it and brought a tripod. I shoot everything in flat profile so the GoPro image isn't too oversharpened and over saturated. I have a love/hate relationship with GoPros. They can be ornery and glitchy and I wish they had better mics built in. But you really can't beat how small, simple and durable they are, especially when you're outside hiking or backpacking.
