    I've owned over 25 bikes in my 65 years. Everything from Harley's and BMW's, to Goldwings to Hayabusa's. I can't remember ever enjoy motorcycling than I do with this wee. It's honestly the most fun I've had on any bike I've ever owned. Around town, light duty off road, and even long distance. It can honestly do it all. I got a '17 leftover in '20 for $5500. This is a keeper!

      Same here, scored a '16 leftover XT in Dec '17 for 5800 right off the showroom floor. Lovin' it! I wanted the side-by-side headlights and preload adjustment on the front shocks.

      Me too! Well I got a used 2017 650 in 2019 with 4200 miles for $5600. Previous owner put givi top and side cases, that Suzuki guard like on the bike in this video, aftermarket seat, mirror extenders, sw motech adv crash bars and a center stand. Best value I’ve ever seen. Love the bike. I have an MT09 for then speed but this bike is so enjoyable

      Yeah one of the reasons I went with it (also have a 2019 650 XT) is people on the Wee FB group saying that 200K miles was not unusual with basically no maintenance. There's at least one owner there with > 300K miles with just regular maintenance (valve adjustment, probably a clutch or 3). Two different Suzuki dealership mechanics said that people buy Wees, ride them away, and they never see them again until they bring them in years later with 200K miles on them to trade them in for a new Wee.

    As an old "Boomer" myself I have owned many, many bikes over the years and the 650 V-Strom is the first under one liter bike I've bought
    in decades. I LOVE this bike.
    It's comfy, handles great, (OK good), and it has enough power to get on the freeway and motor at 70mph all day, it has a bunch of after market
    stuff available and it goes just fine on the trail. No, it is not a hell bent for speed dirt bike and no it does not carve up the canyons like a sport
    bike BUT, it just works !
    It does so many things well and it does not cost that much. I recommend this bike highly.

    I started out on a '66 Yamaha 100 autolube in the 70's and worked my way through classic Honda CL175, CB175, CB 350's, CB 500 & 750 then moved onto Yamaha v-star 650 v-twin, BMW R80's and ultimately an R1200 GS. More recently I did a frame up restoration on a '74 Honda CB450 twin cam and am working on a '75 Honda 400-four this winter. in 2018 after I sold the R1200GS, I bought a Suzuki v-strom XT and I have to say this is a gem of a bike that really strikes a terrific balance between displacement, weight and size - both as a sole rider and 2-up with top case and bags. The 1200 was a terrific machine but heavy - very heavy when you were 2-up with side bags and top case. The Suzuki needs to be worked harder to get the maximum out of its power band when heavily loaded, but the key to me is that it has an incredibly broad power band - from stop to 6,000 rpm in every gear it just pulls and pulls and with its lighter weight, narrower width and a wheelbase which is actually longer than the GS it is like being on a carving ski! This agility is confidence-inspiring and raises the ability of the rider...I compare the R1200 GS and the Vstrom as the difference between a P-47 and a Spitfire...Both excellent machines but very different in how they present and feel as you operate them...

      It’s interesting that the bigger bikes have become the norm over time. The larger displacement as well, 1000cc and over has become a standard. When we were younger a 750 was big. With that said I just wanted a nice 650 and the vstrom fits the bill. I miss the old bikes. I like the new triumph retro bikes. Recently there was one year of a retro Honda 1000 lots of chrome spoke wheels. I wish I had bought that. I’m on the look out for a US version 78 or 79 Yamaha SR500.

      The 1050XT is really nice - I have a 2019 650XT with only about 3300 miles on it. If they come out with a 650 that brings in some of the tech from the 1050 - cruise control, TFT dash, lean sensitive TC and ABS, I might have to upgrade. I'd be happy to pay another grand or two for that stuff, but I don't really need or want a 1000.

      Funny story (not related to motorcycles). In the late 70's two friends and I drove up Refugio road. I wanted to cut some firewood and Ed wanted to plink with his .44 magnum.
      I spotted a dead standing scrub oak and pulled over. While I was getting my chainsaw out Ed opened fire.
      Well shortly after that we heard footsteps crunching through the weeds and suddenly we were confronted by 3 guys wearin white dress shirts and ties and wingtip shoes. They were brandishing snubnosed revolvers. Unbeknownst to us we had stopped right by Ronald Reagan's ranch. It was a tense stand off. But they just let us go. Whew.
      I have probably ridden Refugio road 100 times on motorcycles.
      John Travolta used to live up there somewhere. Saw him at the Clenet dealership once.

    I live in England and the weather there really tests the bike and it really does prove the 7 grand I payed for it stands out. Almost like I stole it.

    I test rode this bike last year and loved it, I knew I'd love the engine as I have had a couple of the original SV650's, that instant pull on the throttle is great. Sadly there were a few deal breakers, the seat was too high, or to be more accurate too high and wide which resulted in me being on my tip toes, which I don't like on a bike. I know there's a lower seat option but that would alter the ergonomics, which were perfect on the standard seat.
    The screen/wind protection was bad, not so much coming over the top of the screen but it was coming in at either side and hitting my face (I've read this is partially to blame due to the mirrors?), so a wider after market screen would be needed. Also, and this is subjective, I just do not like the front end, it's ugly as hell to me, which is a shame as the rest of the bike looks great.
    I ended up getting a Tiger 800 XRt. Happy riding and stay safe.

      Well comfort is subjective depending on your age and weight. It’s an adventure bike so it is all day comfortable. The vstrom 650 revs high but it’s made to do that and still gets 60mpg. If you’re over 6’ and like to lug along on the freeway I would recommend the vstrom dl1000 16-19 year.

    I own a beverly 350 ST and considering to add the all new 1050XT which launched recently.
    Compare to the 2019 1000xt it has so much upgrades.. Just outstanding
    6 axis IMU, higher rev engine mods for road bias adventure bike, cruise control, full led lights, hill stop assist(it brakes automatically when you stop at a slope), new design looks like DR.BIG 750, 3 different riding mode like your MT-10, Electronic speedo, front and rear combine brake, load detecting control(when 2 up the bike recognize and control the engine torque to keep the bike more stable), down hill control(electronic control to prevent the rear wheel lift under hard braking at down hill), etc
    If the new 1050xt did not launch i would have take the 650 instead of 1000 for sure
    The only complain about new 1050xt is that they deleted the slipper clutch
    I think they wanted to restrain the price increase to the minimum
    Nice review though, Cheers from South Korea 🇰🇷👍

      The output of the six-speed, close-ratio transmission is managed by the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS). This system works like a slipper clutch by allowing a small amount of clutch slip to enable smooth downshifts. It also works as an assist clutch, making the clutch lever pull light and precise.

I want a Goldwing sized bike for my wifes comfort, and I want 250cc-400cc dual sport for fun stuff, but I want to keep this for its economy and reliability. This Suzuki is over 100 lbs lighter and I love the bike. It has enough power to go two up and cruise at freeway speeds all day. It will do everything the Tenere would do...with less weight. I live on the southern coast of sunny South Africa in a medium-sized harbour city named Port Elizabeth. With our moderate Mediterranean-type climate we cycle all year round, yay! We are so blessed. We have very good roads suitable for a variety of riding experiences ; tar, gravel, farm roads, bush tracks and off-road circuits. I use my BMW 1150 GS (1999 year model) for dirt road touring and my BMW 1150 RT for highway and by-way touring and riding. The GS has done162000km and the RT 162000 km. I love the 3rd generation XT models, but I dislike the wire wheels. I do know and understand all the reasons why wire spokes are superior for off-road use, but I have owned about 40 bikes with spokes in the last 50 years, and I just hate the maintenance required of them if I don't have to have them for spirited riding on rough trails. My 2013 DL650 ABS Adventure model has all the factory Suzuki bells and whistles - engine guards, aluminum bash plate, hand guards, removable panniers and top case, locking tank bag etc - but with wonderful, maintenance-free alloy wheels, and I think that is the ultimate configuration. The DL650 in any configuration will never be more than a great, comfortable, do-anything "street bike", than "can" go off-road - a little bit, if you have to. (And by the way... gravel roads and fire roads are not "off-roading" in my opinion.) A DL650 will never excel as a dirt bike no matter what you do, because of the excessive weight, lack of ground clearance, extended wheelbase, unsuitable steering geometry, highway gearing etc. So why bring on the maintenance woes of spokes when alloy works great for everything but the worst off-road conditions? I also have the Suzuki V-Strom 650, since last October - after viewing lots of TH-cam videos - and I think and experience exactly the same: It's such a great motorcycle, goes like "butter in summer". I also was looking for a compromise between performance and weight. As soon as Corona is over, I will check its behaviour off-road in Morocco (or in the Pyrenees in Spain). To all that have it (the bike ...): enjoy!

    Still want one of these for all the reasons you mentioned. That 650 v-twin engine especially is still such a peach, even owning a Tiger 800 with its lovely triple. Probably going to sell it and look for one of these. Don’t need any of the features my XRT has, and they’re many. I’m also kind of annoyed with the modes, the complex TFT screen, and all the buttons/switches. I miss simple standard Japanese controls. Also, the V-Strom 650 is still the most comfortable bike I’ve ever ridden.

      I actually considered getting a triumph 1200 xrt. I wouldn’t mind shaft drive and cruise control. But I wasn’t confident about the economy so I choose the cheapest bike on my list. And I really like the Suzuki vtwin in both sizes.

    • @mindspinn311
      @mindspinn311 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CPUspeed I have time on both. The 1200 is a pig compared to the 800 for not much advantage other than shaft drive and more speed. It’s a mileage muncher for sure. But for that class I would MUCH rather have the GS. Good thing Triumph is fully redesigning the 1200. Love my 800 but it was too much money even with a significant discount. I’d rather have spent half as much and have the Vstrom. I hope to sell it this year, even though I will miss it.

    Sir, I'm planning to buy a adventure bike and I'm 5.7 tall. My problem is that all ADV. bikes are too tall. Would I be able to have both feet on the ground on this bike?
    The only beginners bike that has a good seat height, is Honda Rebel 1100, but it's a cruiser bike. And that brings up the second question. Can I take a Rebel off road (not too crazy) but if I need to do sightseeing where is might be dirt road.

      I have seen prices range from 7700 and 8300 so 8k out the door is a good price. Ask them to check the clutch play while the bike is cold, mine was off. A new rider shouldn’t have to deal with that straight off.

    • @CPUspeed

      The 650 is ok on the highway but is going to rev higher than a 1000. The engine is made to run like that. If you’re the type of person who likes big engines and chugging along you may be put off by it. Yes the 1000 is more expensive but you can find cheap left over 1000’s especially the vstrom since it just had a gen change.

    *hello from Hungary, I love your commentaries about the bike. I sold my 2015 650XT, coz friends were road racing faster than me and I revved the poor bike a lot. Miss the simplicity and ease of the 650. Got a 2017 DL1000XT, LOVE the effortless grunt, the clutch. fuel consumption minimum plus 1 liter more consumption per 100km than the 650. interestingly, I could not set the suspension as smooth as on the 650, 650 is like a road "iron", smoothes out the bad road, on the 1000 I feel every hit. maybe my tires have too much air pressure, cant wait to get rid of the shitty bridgestone battlewings. first week riding the 1000 I got scared, as I felt the weight difference but now I ride the 1000 more confident and love it. 650 is better in the City, 1000 is better on the highway and/or with 2 persons. hated the missing slipper clutch on the 650, hated to do rev matching. new DL1000 after 2014 new gen engines are well balanced, before 2014 are the DL1000 unbalanced like a poor tractor, I rode a 2006 once. cheers!*

    I just ended up selling my 06 vstrom after owning it for a year. I liked it well enough, but the handling wasn't as sporty as I like on the roads, and it didn't handle great off-road. Felt like I was compromising too much on either side making for a kinda meh feeling all around. Ended up getting a ninja 650 instead as it is way more fun and nimble on the roads, and it the future I might pick up a drz400 to scratch my off-road itch. Maybe if I did more touring I would appreciate the vstrom more, but being in college I rarely get out for more than a few hours at a time.

    I wanted to upgrade to the V-Strom 1000 for the extra power and breaking when riding two up. However, I still have and love my 2012 V-Strom 650, as I much prefer the way it corners so beautifully. (Didn't like the way the 1000 tipped into corners.) And in the 8 years that I've owned it, it has depreciated as much as a more premium bike would have done in just one to two years!

    • @samiam5326

      Hi Chris, try to ride both. They are different in the way they handle. I'm definitely going to try out the new V-Strom 1050 when it gets to Oz, even though handling wise it's exactly the same bike as the previous version. What I'm curious about is that they have slightly retuned the new 1050. I found the 1000 a bit lumpy down load compared to the much better 650. Hopefully the new tuning has helped improve this.
      The new 1050 also comes with cruise control. There is an Australian company called MC Cruise (www.mccruise.com) who do an electronic cc for both the 650 & 1000 for A$1,400 (US$900). At the moment I make do with an ATLAS throttle lock.
      Not sure about the fuel consumption on the bigger bike, but on the 650 I can squeeze 400km (250 miles) on the highway out of a tank of gas.
      The main reason I want the bigger bike is I'm starting to do more two-up riding, otherwise I'd stick with the 650.

    • @samiam5326
      @samiam5326 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can easily ride two-up on the 650. The thing is, when my missus gets off it instantly feels like an 800cc bike. 😂 The point is, the extra weight saps your power. But it's still fine on the freeway etc. there is enough power with the 650.
      Also in city riding where more breaking at lights etc is needed. You feel the extra weight and lack of stopping power. It's ok. It works, but it's not fantastic. The bigger 1000 comes with four piston brakes where as the 650 has just two piston front stoppers.
      As others have said, if the majority of your riding is solo the 650 is awesome! If the majority of your riding is with a pillion I'd recommend the 1000.

      Tips for shorter riders... when getting on a tall bike put your foot on the peg first the swing leg over. Suzuki offers a low seat. I still prefer the 1050 over the 650. I don't plan to do much off roading. 90% of my riding will be on roads and highways. Simply put, I plan to use my next bike more as a touring bike. For me the extra power of the 1050, wider seat, and specially the cruise control make it worth the money compared to others bikes like the BMW's. I was thinking of the KTM Duke 790 because of it's power, until I read the warranty. It's pretty lousy. It only covers the engine, swing arm, and frame. That means that the suspension and electronic/electrical is not covered. A deal breaker for me. I've like knowing that I can ride two up, be loaded, and still have plenty of power to comfortably hit the highway, and specially pass a semi on a two lane highway. None the less I am also considering the 650 for in town commuter bike. Those two bikes and I'll be good.

      It's fine for 6', you can get a taller seat (or just add a sheepskin with a waterproof cover), and for even more comfort the Suzuki off road pegs aren't chap but they are adjustable which makes a difference. I took mine on a week long trip last summer and for the run home we had to put in back to back 500+ mile days to get home in time. Basically 6am to 6pm each day, perfectly comfortable. Also, a taller windscreen is a plus.
      BTW, cartridge emulators are a nice upgrade for non adjustable forks.

    You can tell that bike is just eating up those cracked and rippled back roads you're on. As much as I want to get an MT07 or something similar, I feel like the smaller 17" wheels and slightly "sportier" handling really compromises the ability to ride comfortably on highway and long miles. What do you think? How do you compare this to something like the Ninja 1000 for eating up miles?

    • @CPUspeed

      It's definitely preferable for a road only bike to have 17" wheels. In fact in my mt-10 video that is on of the reasons I got the mt-10. A 19" or even 21" front wheel are common for adventure bikes because you can go off road. There are some adv like bikes with 17" wheels like the bmr frx 900. I like adv bikes for the long haul because I'm tall. I really like the new ninja 1000 cause it has cruise control, great bike, but am a little old for sport bike.

    So thinking of purchasing a V- Strom never owned a Sport Touring bike, but have Ridden Harleys etc for about 10 plus years, but thinking about a riding change, I am wondering about the 650 verses the 1000, as I am 6'4 300 plus pounds, so with all gear, and me, I was wondering what would be best for me, I would be using for Highway and some mountain roads for fishing at some of those lake, and price, I don't want to break the bank on buying one of these,,,thank you

      I would recommend the 1000. I owned one and I think it’s a good transition... another big vtwin. Loved mine. If you’re looking for a deal find a new older gen. If you have the bucks get the new XT with new dash and cruise control.

      Coming from a Harley, I think you'd appreciate the extra torque of the 1000. (101Nm vs 60Nm.)

      What are you going to use the bike for? Each bike you listed in that order are more offroad worthy. Vstrom less offroad, 500x in the middle, tenere most offroad.

    The Triumph Tiger 900 is 50 lbs lighter than the V-Strom 650, but $4000 more. There is a Low version of the Triumph makes it nice for short riders like me. I'm currently considering both bikes. I've had both a 955cc Triumph AND an original 1999 SV650.

    • @CPUspeed
      @CPUspeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the new triumph 900 and like the 2 versions for road and dirt. However I gravitate towards the rally pro and cross shop with more high end bikes. I would like to indulge myself with all the electronic goodies. If that’s not important to you at least spring for the version with cruise control. Granted it’s not fair to cross shop it with the vstrom 650 but in my wet boots video you see it is on my list and it’s very difficult to overlook the price.

      @@CPUspeed Yeah, my shopping tends to be all over the map, but size is my biggest factor, not price. I've also had a Kawi Ninja 650R and I wasn't thrilled with the motor as I was my SV650, which was stolen 6 months after I bought it. Once I can find a VSTROM on a showroom floor, I'll be able to determine how the height/weight will work for me. I'm really looking for something that won't struggle or be too buzzy on the highway, which is why the Tigger is in the picture too. Hopefully I can find a 900 Low edition on the floor, but even with 2 Triumph dealers close by, I doubt it.

      I owned a KLR650 before my V-Strom 650XT 2020. It was the perfect upgarde for me as I hardly went off road with the KLR. I looked at the new Yamaha T700 but I had to wait to even look at one for 3-4 months, but it was more suited to off road and would have costed me another 6 grand. I looked at an Africa Twin as well but too big me for commuting through traffic. Great for long trips with 2 up and luggage, but difficult if you want to work on it yourself.

    We have bought one and it is fantastic. We get over 300 miles to a tank full. Also the mirrors are excellent while not protruding too far out. We ride two up, total weight is 350 lbs. To be honest the 650cc of today does what the 1000cc bike did yesterday. 72 bhp and 0-60 of 3.5 seconds is more than enough. The only thing I have done that may interest you is I have fitted a foot lowering kit. I have a centre stand and with the genuine Suzuki lowering kit you lose this. This is what it looks like. th-cam.com/video/F9iQYKgaFDE/w-d-xo.html

    You do know it has six gears?

    • @CPUspeed
      @CPUspeed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, manual transmissions let you be in the gear you want to be in, unlike an automatic that always shifts through to the top gear. Smaller engines like a 650 you have to stay in the powerband especially around town or it will stall. Larger engines have more torque and can be in ridden in a higher gear.
