Just saw this movie last night with some friends as a practicing devout Catholic, I thought this movie was visually stunning, 100% accurate. The picture was absolutely well-made with a stellar cast of A listers. A conclave (meaning “with key”) is centuries old process of electing the Supreme Pontiff. This movie sheds a true light on clericalism, traditionalism, modernism and relativism. I would definitely see this movie again and makes me proud to be a Roman Catholic.
Exactly I’m a devout catholic, raised in the church, pretty traditional, and yet I thought this was a beautiful film, and so did my mother. Many Catholics went on the internet to complain but I felt this held a mirror up to the internal issues of the church, and the ending wasn’t controversial to me and my mother as anyone familiar with Catholic teaching about these circumstances would know this isn’t a stretch
I went to an advance screening that was packed and it was really fun (but bizarre) for the audience to be laughing and oooing and ahiing the whole time over these catty priests like they were on drag race.
It is crazy that Ralph Fiennes has only been nominated for an Oscar twice. Plus the last time he was nominated was back in 1997!!! He is long overdue for another nomination and possible win.
Growing up in a devoutly Catholic, but NOT with judgmental parents household who allowed me to be who I am…..and visited The Vatican (that is a whole different saga and experience….and not necessarily good)……this is one of my favorite films of 2024.
The Black cardinal having a random baby was so out of pocket, voting in an unknown was wild, and Cardinal Tabasco worked my nerves. The catholics are some messy queens. 3.5/5.
I've read the novel, and there Tedesco is less... insufferable. While he is still definitely a conservative, he's not racist. He does not refer to the Muslims as "animals" nor does he ask for a new "war of religion". These are film additions to dial up the level of drama. And they are not the only ones: in the novel, Bellini never screams "THIS IS A WAR!" to Lawrence/Lomeli. Pity for these unnecessary "encrustation", the few bad ones of an otherwise quite interesting film.
I fail to understand why some people have issues with the last 10 minutes of CONCLAVE. My neighbors 10 yr daughter was born intersex. Her daughter appears female but has no ovaries and no uterus. She will never be pregnant, and never have a menstrual cycle. Her mom hopes extra estrogen will allow her to at least have her body initiate puberty, but her future is unknown. She could end up a grown adult, within the body shape of a pre-pubescent person forever. My neighbor was afraid, that I would be afraid of my daughter being friends with her daughter. I told her no worries. Our children are good friends, and my daughter has learned that sometimes gender itself might not be typical. In the movie Conclave, the cardinal who is intersex, has a different issue, his body appears male. He always assumed he was male, until in his 30’s an appendix removal surgery shocked him with the reveal that in addition to having fully functional male genitalia the Conclave movie character also had a uterus and ovaries (no fallopian tubes) in his torso. He never had breasts and had developed as a man, to the point of his appendix being removed. The movie character was just as surprised as the doctor who removed his appendix, about his odd gender reality From my own point of view, I thought this movie was FANTASTIC! The Intersex birth defect where some genitalia fails to develop, and the individual presents as a single gender; or the more rare complicated situation. where a child is born with internal genitalia parts of both male and female, which may, or more likely, may not be fully present, is a challenge to explain. My neighbor’s daughter underwent a full body scan upon turning 10, to make sure she did not have undeveloped male genitalia in her body. She thinks of herself as a girl, even though she is lacking, since birth, a uterus and ovaries. Physically, she biologically appears to be a 10yr female. Her Chromosomes are Xo. Part of one of her two X chromosomes broke and the two ends of the broken X portions bent and became joined to form a ring. She got lucky. The portion that broke off was small enough that she is still genetically female (XX) but with the additional broken-off “o” part. If More had broken off, of that one X chromosome she would have developed as a Boy with (XY) genetics, and would have developed male genitalia, but may have been sterile. The cardinal Character in ConClave is a characterization of the very Rare (Xo-XY) situation. He presents as male, his body developed as a male, he went through Male Puberty, but his body also had a uterus, and ovaries from birth without his knowledge or awareness, though the ovaries had no fallopian tube connection, he never ovulated, and no breasts ever developed. The point of the end of the movie is, he is, simply himself, and because of having his appendix removed in his 30’s, he then became aware that he is a male but also partially female. Technically he is partly both genders, which the character knows to be odd, but it is, this character’s reality, in the movie, and that should help the Character to have empathy and compassion as he follows the path ahead in his life. I will be showing this movie to my 9yr daughter. I know what her reaction to the end will be. (I.e., “Hey mom and dad”, “The cardinal guy in the end, is just like my friend, only older, with a different group missing or extra private parts, and he ended up looking male. Wow, I’m glad movies are acknowledging that people like my friend are real people.”). Then my daughter will just continue doing whatever she was doing, before the movie. I think this is a great movie, to assist people in understanding that life is not binary. (Black/white, or good/bad, or Just Male/Just Female, … etc.,) People are complicated. Often the best people to lead, are people who do not desire leadership, but are capable when they need to lead, because they care that everyone survives, and they put others first.
You have stated the situation perfectly. The new pope did not choose to be a trans man. He in every way was always male but was born with a difference just as neurodivergent people like me was born with a brain wired differently then most people. Thank you.
I don’t have a problem with intersex people but I do have a problem with someone who is lgbt that has zero anatomical anomalies using the line out of the movie: “this is the way God made me”. Tucci eluded to handling gay people with common sense which is the last thing a Bible thumping priest should be saying. We all know this was less about intersex anomalies and more about the movie industry promoting lgbt.
We handle gay people as per the Bible not common sense. The Bible says to love our neighbor which means tell them the truth. Your fake friends tell you what you want to hear and a real friend will tell you what you need to hear in love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Proverbs 27:6
I don't believe it's about those last 10 minutes it's about Lgbtq+ Priests and Cardinals wanting to reform the Church ? 1Corinthians 6:9 -11 if you can't follow the scriptures then the Pope should Xcommunicate those who disobey.
I saw this today with my mom. Afterward, I said to her, "I wish they had used the term 'intersex,' as I'm not sure the audience of older folks in our theater (I'm in Florida) really understood what Benitez was describing in the end." He's not a woman. He's not a trans-man. He's a man, grew up as a man, presents as a man, but his body includes some female parts. Truly intersex. And his compassion comes from knowing he is different..."living in the uncertainties," as he says to Cardinal Lawrence.
"he wants to make the Vatican great again" lmaoo I liked this movie but I feel like people oversold Ralph Fiennes a bit. Like HE COULD WIN THE OSCAR but I don't think so.
I think critics and some viewers are so impressed because Fiennes skillfully underplays the role. Showing internal conflict is hard to do. The guy really does have range because think about his work in The Grand Budapest Hotel. In that film he did the opposite and chewed the scenery.
Its a very strange world to navigate unless you were brought up in this religion. Also, it's pretty terrifying when religion has their hooks in politics. Great cast so I'll check it out.
@crimsonstreams "Rules for thee but not for me." Being close to Boston and that decades long scandal solidified the corruption. My hometown shuffled around Richard Lavigne, who got away with the murder of a 13 year old altar boy, Danny Croteau, defrocked but never charged until after his death. I knew the father bc he went to my church. I could never get over how he kept going back after losing his son. The grief on his face was something you never forget. It was a huge case. I escaped it once I turned 13 and never went back.
Actually, in the first scene he shows up, he is assorted in prayer. Both in the film and in the novel, if I am not wrong. The funny part, I think, is the dialogue between Lawrence/Lomeli and O'Malley about his coming. "Your Eminence, we've got a problem". "What happened? has one of the cardinal died? [lol] did we lose one of them?" "No, quite the opposite. We've gained a new one. He showed up..."
things left unsaid, nuns, sold the "reveal" for me. in background nuns served humbly, selflessly, invisibly. pair humble service with risk taking... poof, cardinal serving anonymously in the most war torn places.
The character of Cardinal Benito is an intersex person, NOT trans....and I thought his revelation made a beautiful statement about the bringing and even welcoming of uncertainties into the powerful leadership role of a pope. The revelation even imparts a feminine (and hopeful) sensibility of bringing the less powerful (and subservient) sex into the whole of an otherwise all-male power structure. Up to this moment, these qualities are encapsulated in the characters of Fiennes and Rosallini respectively.

In the film, Benitez says he always considered himself fully male, but then during an operation it turned out he has a womb and ovaries. But he also says according to his chromosomes he is female.
it's weird because for decades he didn't notice because he wasn't bleeding every month? that means he doesn't even produce the eggs for reproduction so he can't even get pregnant lol. but idk if he wasn't bleeding maybe in the book he was but that would be hella weird if he WAS bleeding and not be concerned about it
@booqqa I read the novel, and I can't remember anything about menstruation or suchlike in that conversation between the Lawrence character and Benitez. I'll have another look!!
This movie is slow with many long lingering shots. I agree with Nick that it's a little on the dry side. Just wanted to give a heads up because I went thinking it was a mystery/thriller. Thanks for the review, guys!
Why? The new pope was as pure as the driven snow unlike some of the others. And like he said - God made me this way. He was a male in every way except he had that genetic mutation of having been born with a uterus. Only the narrow-minded would find this shocking. And who's "Your audience"? Did your church group go?
The ending felt like a different movie. There was no buildup to it, even though they could have done that. Also, I thought Fiennes’ character would have been a better selection for pope. A reluctant pope who gravely takes on the responsibility.
Pointed comment on the plot's impactful scene of the sudden demise, not feeling the shock vibes as the character was "old as hell..." 🤣Well good thing it had other worthy intrigue to impress 😀
