One of your most engaging reviews. The 1979 version is my favorite. A hypnotic, fairytale-like mood piece. Klaus Kinski and Isabelle Adjani are marvelous.
This is the first review that I have seen that wasn't blown away by it, and what is interesting to me is that you compare it to the 79 version, which hardly anyone else mentions. It makes me wonder if the insane fever dream that is Herzog's version just can't be beaten? It's one of my favorite films of all time, and it is utterly terrifying IMO. Kinski just reeks of decayed evil, but also sadness, which is a pretty big feat to pull off. I loved The Witch, and have high hopes for this, but a moustache?? A moustache? On a vampire? Just no - reminds me too much of the original Dracula artwork, which never hit like the Nosferatu characterisation. (Nothing wrong with taches in general but not on my undead!) Great review.

What surprised me was that she spoke about the intention being for her to have more agency as a female character in the film. Didn’t see that…I also agree with your critique of Nosferatu’s look. How is the undead able to grow a mustache??? It was beautifully shot and I’ve never seen the pervious films so I enjoyed the watch, apart from the ending.
He exudes sexuality and desire effortlessly. There could have been 0 sex scenes in that movie and it would still be sexy. TBH, I find the use of sex scenes to show sexuality to be uncreative and boring, especially if that's the main avenue for showing it.

I got a copy from my library and read it over the weekend and had my whole mind BLOWN!!.. That man was CRAZY!🤣😂😂

There's yet another Nosferatu remake starring Doug Jones that was released this year on AppleTV you guys might want to check out. That was in development for a decade even before Robert Eggers' version by a few years as he was working on his own since 2017. I'm like, UGH...why can't they leave the story alone but the look and aesthetics of the other remake looks pretty good and more of a homage to the original as it was done in a way to show what the 1922 version would be if they had sound and better cameras.

No way. This is a passion project. Eggers said he wanted to make it aesthetically pleasing, but with a grimey filter. Most "Dracula" films are all elegant and pristine. This film is NOT.

I of course haven't seen Nosferatu but when I heard that Bill Skarsgård was Count Orlok I was really, like meh. And not even saying that Skarsgard is not a good actor but seriously, think about most of the movies he is in and the vast majority of them only excel at around 75%. It's like he curses movies. He is like the Afflecks (and I don't mean the duck) but if Ben or Casey is in a movie there is a good chance it is going to be really mid or just boring, eh. They curse movies too

This just looks like a mashup of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Nosferatu. They keep hiding Nosferatu’s appearance, so I will be very pissed, if he just looks like the 1922 and 1979 versions. You guys say he looks like a normal but tall man, but most other reviewers say he has a monstrous appearance. I’m confused.

Omg hi guys! So Nick you mentioned the Hunger with Catherine Deneuve that was such a cult classic! I need to rewatch it. That was a punk rock anthem for me and my emo/ goth friend group lol. Plus David Bowie, Bauhaus , Susan Sarandon, Willem Dafoe among many others are in it. What a sensual movie. 🍿💋 It seems like this film is similar to Mary Reilly where the attempt was made to remake Jekyll and Hyde but the result was so meh it was totally forgettable. Even though the cast was amazing with Julia Robert’s, John malkovich , Glenn close etc but the movie was so dry. But lily rose was not the right person for this role at all. It is disappointing because I really love the Witch it’s one of my all time favorite movies ever however the only thing I enjoyed about the Northman was seeing Bjork play in a role again and I didn’t care for the Lighthouse. I will probably still sit through this at home and stream it because I’m a sucker for anything period or historical dramas 😎 You guys rock ❤

Wow. Killer Review. I am watching the beast now with Lea Seydoux. Good lord. This is up my Alley.... Thanks Fish Jelly. I don't mind this actor George Mckay. Every generation has these background characters, and he is one of the best imho. In regard to Nosferatu. The cast seems to have brought this down big time. Klaus Kinsky? The only guy like him nowadays is maybe Nicholas Cage or Jeremy Davies, Maybe Bale could get there I wouldn't doubt it. Interestingly enough I think James Franco would have been an incredible Nosferatu. He is studied in the art of manipulation and seduction, and I think he would have brought alot to this role. I want to like Nicholas Hoult and from his work in Warm Bodies and Mad Max, I do... But this new batch of his movies, like the last 5 have been forced and not mindful of his strengths as an actor Which I think are his Innocence and Vulnerability and Overall strength of character.... Maybe he is only good in heavy makeup, or as a sympathetic character. Juror # 2 was fine, but.... Still excited to at least see the movie and form an opinion of my own. Tempered expectations aside.

The background is killing me. 😂 Yeah I had a feeling... Robert Eggers just has outdone himself with such weird, unique movies. When they announced Lily-Rose Depp early this year... Honestly that was a little disappointing, that was my first red flag, no offense to her. And the stills, and then people kind of went quiet, I just had a feeling it was going to be just another vampire movie.
But it's the exact opposite of "just another DRACULA movie". Most Dracula film adaptations are pristine and elegant, but Eggers wanted to make Nosferatu look like the plague ran through it.
A shame it's a disappointment. I did have my suspicions. Seems like it should be easy enough to do a pretty faithful remake of a knock-off. Clearly not.
It's a completely original version. Eggers wanted to make a grimey, plague-riddled Dracula film as opposed to the pristine, elegant versions of Nosferatu over the years.
I want to see this movie in the theatre. However I am disappointed to find out it has severe flaws. Based upon your review I would not like the changes made to the story. As for the 1979 version I have never seen it. This October I went to a symphony hall in Kansas City and watched the 1922 version on the big screen with an orchestra. It was a phenom experience. Also "Shadow of the Vampire" is one of my favorites.
Oof this review is so disappointing. So far I’ve really enjoyed all of Eggers’ films and was very much looking forward to this. At least now I can go in with adjusted expectations and hopefully enjoy it on some level. Appreciate you two!
Oh no, I was hoping this wouldn’t be like Longlegs which I found very underwhelming even though it was still decent. I felt like barely anything happened in that movie and this looked like it may end up being the same.
Damn the plot sounds dumb. Why does Ellen suddenly have all that sexual frustration and repression? Why does her husband gets cuckolded in this? Why did they take away her agency-and gave it to Dafoe who now is the one who reads about how to kill vampire and tells Ellen that she basically has to sacrifice herself?! Why did they make that stupid backstory which made Ellen directly to blame for Orlok coming to Germany at all because she already had a pact with him?!

My favorite is the BBC'S Dracula starring Louis Jourdan. It's faithful to the book. The scene of Dracula climbing down the side of the castle is still in my mind.

Dracula is a moustached monster in the original novel.
Isabelle Adjani is such a special actress. She's absolutely gorgeous and chooses some of the most problematic characters. Love her.

Aesthetically the best cinematography I've seen this year at a theater.
And the grimey pieces and costumes are a nice twist on the usually pristine Dracula gimmick.

In regard to Nosferatu. The cast seems to have brought this down big time. Klaus Kinsky? The only guy like him nowadays is maybe Nicholas Cage or Jeremy Davies, Maybe Bale could get there I wouldn't doubt it. Interestingly enough I think James Franco would have been an incredible Nosferatu. He is studied in the art of manipulation and seduction, and I think he would have brought alot to this role.
I want to like Nicholas Hoult and from his work in Warm Bodies and Mad Max, I do... But this new batch of his movies, like the last 5 have been forced and not mindful of his strengths as an actor Which I think are his Innocence and Vulnerability and Overall strength of character.... Maybe he is only good in heavy makeup, or as a sympathetic character. Juror # 2 was fine, but.... Still excited to at least see the movie and form an opinion of my own. Tempered expectations aside.

The background is killing me. 😂 Yeah I had a feeling... Robert Eggers just has outdone himself with such weird, unique movies. When they announced Lily-Rose Depp early this year... Honestly that was a little disappointing, that was my first red flag, no offense to her. And the stills, and then people kind of went quiet, I just had a feeling it was going to be just another vampire movie.
But it's the exact opposite of "just another DRACULA movie".
Most Dracula film adaptations are pristine and elegant, but Eggers wanted to make Nosferatu look like the plague ran through it.
A shame it's a disappointment. I did have my suspicions. Seems like it should be easy enough to do a pretty faithful remake of a knock-off. Clearly not.

I want to see this movie in the theatre. However I am disappointed to find out it has severe flaws. Based upon your review I would not like the changes made to the story. As for the 1979 version I have never seen it. This October I went to a symphony hall in Kansas City and watched the 1922 version on the big screen with an orchestra. It was a phenom experience. Also "Shadow of the Vampire" is one of my favorites.

From all the hype regarding this film the big question is will Goth kids love this film?

Oof this review is so disappointing. So far I’ve really enjoyed all of Eggers’ films and was very much looking forward to this. At least now I can go in with adjusted expectations and hopefully enjoy it on some level. Appreciate you two!
Oh damn thought it would be good
Oh no, I was hoping this wouldn’t be like Longlegs which I found very underwhelming even though it was still decent. I felt like barely anything happened in that movie and this looked like it may end up being the same.
It would perhaps have been more sexual,had the director been Lars von Trier.
This is probably gonna rank right alongside John Carpenter's the Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly as one of the all time horror remakes.

Damn the plot sounds dumb. Why does Ellen suddenly have all that sexual frustration and repression? Why does her husband gets cuckolded in this? Why did they take away her agency-and gave it to Dafoe who now is the one who reads about how to kill vampire and tells Ellen that she basically has to sacrifice herself?! Why did they make that stupid backstory which made Ellen directly to blame for Orlok coming to Germany at all because she already had a pact with him?!
I liked the Northman and The Lighthouse, however, The Witch was pretty insufferable to me.
The Witch was my favorite. The Lighthouse was also really good. Did not care at all for The Northman.

@tigerlilly9038 I would've thought Eggers would have that in the film then! Look at how they sounded in the Northman or Lighthouse. Both accents were ridiculous.
Just have a German and Hungarian cast, and have the characters speaking the appropriate languages to location

My favorite is the BBC'S Dracula starring Louis Jourdan. It's faithful to the book. The scene of Dracula climbing down the side of the castle is still in my mind.
