I’ve seen it twice and the first time, I was jarred by his acting choice. The second time, I realized it had to be intentional in how over the top and exaggerated it felt. I laughed when someone posted that the academy should take back his Oscar after this performance. 😂
I laughed too because his bellowing sounded exactly like his character in The Whale, and I often make fun of that too.

Lawyers are like carnival promoters and campaigning politicians, especially before TV. They really had to sell through theatrics.

the best scene in the entire movie was the beginning when the native americans discovered the oil! them jumping around in it in slow motion was beautifully shot.
The film did not reveal that even before the oil the Osage were a wealthy group that owned its own land unlike other groups….
Did you guys notice that flies followed Leo’s character? I think it was meant to allude that he was rotten from the inside out

This may not be accurate to the book, but in the beginning of the movie, they showed two Osage men dying while they were young/in their prime from a random disease. I got the impression that the men were targeted and killed which reduced some of the male population in the tribes so that if the woman wanted to marry they had to marry outside of their community. It was all calculated, of course. But even still, I kept thinking about how they kept marrying these white people that were not even hiding the fact that they were greedy and lazy and over charging them.
I loved the scene where Ernest and Mollie are hosting Hale for dinner and announce that they are having another child. De Niro’s reaction is so subtle and haunting.
I was really disappointed by how much they focused on Leo & De Niro over the Osage people.
The best Leo scene to me was when they send the doctors away and he’s yelling at Molly. The angrier he gets and when he calls her a bitch, it felt so unsettling to me. It’s a side that he hasn’t shown up to that point and yet it feels so natural. It also really solidified how much trust had been built up between him and Molly to that point.
One thing I noticed was Leonardo DiCaprio starts in peasant clothing when he enters the town and as he gains money and power he is dressed in richer higher status clothing and when he goes to jail he's back in peasant clothing. It was a nice touch that everyone in the film was dressed to show their status.

My 73 year old father would LOVE to see this, but no way would he be able to sit thru 3 and a half hours in a theater seat. I guess he'll have to wait until it comes out on a dish channel, because he's old and doesn't have streaming. LOL
It's coming out on Apple TV's streaming platform (since it's their production and movie). Even if you subscribe to their streaming service for ONLY 1 month, there's a high chance it's MUCH CHEAPER than watching it in theaters.
Yep- I just turned 57 and saw it with my friend (49). Bathroom breaks were necessary, and I abhor missing a moment of any movie I go to, but at some point in that third hour, nature is not just calling, but screaming. . .
This is a true story. It was like they assigned White babysitters because the government didn’t think the Osage were competent enough to handle their own money.
Leo D was absurdly old to be playing a young chap just back from WWI. What did u enlist when u were 45? What the hell were you doing for the 27 years before that?

The book had a solid narrative while still sharing lots of historical facts I never learned in school. Hoping they don't make Leo's character too protagonistic because the actual person eventually did the right thing after lots of evil shit. Appreciate your review as always!
They don’t make him to protagonistic he has some redeeming qualities but it’s obvious he is a selfish person who is easily manipulated and did bad things for greed and personal gain
Love your reviews! I thought the movie was great, but also frustrating. Like Joseph, I couldn’t understand why these wealthy Indigenous women wanted to marry a bunch of loser-ass white men, especially when said men didn’t hide the fact that they were after their money. And even though I loved Lilly Gladstone’s presence, she wasn’t given enough to do, especially in the third act. I wanted to know what she was thinking, or why she was standing by her no-good man for so long, knowing what she knew. It made no sense. I guess I have to read the book.
White supremacy is a helluva drug. They saw these white men as better than their native men despite the white men being losers.

With the trailers, it was 8 minutes shy of 4 hours at the theater I went to. As we walked out, my friend's wife was calling him, and she wasn't happy. . .
This is why I'm hesitant to see it. My husband and I thought about seeing it last weekend but then we saw the run time.
In light of your comments it's interesting that they actually expanded Lily and the Osage's role compared to the original script, which must have sidelined them entirely.
Thank you both for the review. Coming off Ken Burn's Buffalo 2h 2 parter on pbs, and jumping right into this, will be emotional. I read the book last year, and it was brutal. Around 60+ Osage Indians were reported deceased through these years.
Coward is the word I would use to describe DiCaprio’s character, his fear of his uncle and his greed drove him to monstrous acts
Great review. I really wanted to love this movie but I couldn't. I kept looking at my watch in the theatre, which is never a good sign.
Scorcese said they restructured the mivie to move the focus from the white savior and more toward the osage characters, but it doesn't feel like it. Of course when you have DiCaprio and deniro, how can you not focus on the marquee names. But i think they should have brought the women more into focus. Mollys hard drinking, gun toting sister was fantastic. I know the book gave her limited time. But i wanted more of her. Plus when i sit for over three hours, its not that time that i resent. I had to sit through six commercials and five previews. That feels disrespectful to me.

I think it’s smart that at times we are made to sympathize or even like Earnest. In this way we can understand why Mollie doesn’t want to believe that Earnest is pure evil until the end
I'm curious how Joseph would rank Barbie, Oppenheimer, and this movie. They're considered 3 of the frontrunners for Oscar and Joseph gave all of them 3.5 stars. Nick liked Oppenheimer the best.
I havent watched the movie but i feel so triggering becuz im a minority n i experienced all these similar crazy situations of oppression. This is not good for my mental health. This is insane

Don't overlook the "oppressed" Indians were rich, because oil was discovered on the Osage reservation.

I went to see this movie bc y’all said it was good. ALL FOUR HOURS 😅. But to y’all’s question of why did these women marry these white men? A TH-camr Alachia Queen adds a lot of context missing. Please go watch. But 1: The state government in an effort to gain control over the land offered many Ossage us citizenship. Many took the offer. 2. Of the ones that got citizenship, they shipped the kids to American boarding schools. They came back looking down on those who remain traditionally Osage. So those Americanized girls and women would be more attracted to white men. Which totally makes sense. Also bc of the guardian laws preventing those women from being able to take care of themselves or spend their own money, it would benefit them to partner with white men.

Your reviews are always entertaining but very thorough. Also women are way more forgiving of ugly men, than others. I think it's strategy in their heads to lower the chances of infidelity.
Oh my God I just watched this tonight guys and I did watch your review before I watched it months after the review and forgetting what you said I was literally saying “oh my God come on already” I had to actually pause my watching of it to see how much longer it would be. it was so good, but it was yeah draining and too long but very good. Based on being a true story and Martin Scorsese’s reputation as a director who doesn’t care about fame or fortune, I had “Flower Moon” flagged as must see in the last quarter of 2023. I saw it today, and admired its extravagant recreation of a different time and place, Robert De Niro being Robert De Niro, and a very perceptive inclusion of Native Americans and their plight. However, Flower Moon is mostly a movie about wretched people doing wretched things (murder, murder, murder), was relentlessly evil, and was so interminable that I walked out after three hours and ten minutes because I was tired of being on the verge of throwing up. (I looked up the run time when I got home and saw that I missed “only” the last twenty minutes, but I don’t regret walking out. The small army of character actors in Flower Moon was fun to watch, but Leonardo Dicaprio had a comical frown plastered on his middle-aged face for 95% of his time on screen. Flower Moon is an old-fashioned “Major Motion Picture” that tries hard, but again, I fled when I had had enough.

This movie was brilliant, haunting and timely. In a time where many (myself included) are examining ethnic cleansing and genocide, we get to see another case of how white supremacy operates in a not so distant past.
My impression was that, for the Osage, marrying a white man was an easy way to get around guardianship restrictions. I would have been nice if that were spelled out the guardianship requirements because my understanding is that's what opened the door for all these vampires to come in and leach from the community.

The federal government was worried with the Osage spending so they made a law that created white guardians n those guardians had access to the payment which led to corruption and all that later it all changed but for awhile white guardians were in charge of the Osage wealth. Wish the film explain it n explain how people would make Osage people buy new cars everytime they ran out of petrol instead of just buying petrol.

Comedy??? Really? I never saw it as a comedy, so I’m kind of surprised this review took it that way. Also I thought that Molly’s actress did a terrific job throughout the film, DiCaprio’s acting lacked subtlety in places, at least for me. To me, the film felt like a documentary told in the form of fictional story telling. People who have interest in historical documentary would most likely appreciate it. The story is very tragic, and the ending is going to be hard to swallow for those who can’t accept the fact that it’s based on a real historical crime. All in all, it was good but also kind of depressing.

Attorneys were probably more theatrical in those days. People didn't have television, so they weren't used to over the top emotive performances.

I feel like the days of a handful of directors (Tarantino, Scorsese, Spielberg etc.) dominating the film scene is obsolete. And the same actors like DiCaprio, Hanks, Pitt, getting paid millions to keep churning out films every year is utterly ridiculous. We need more diverse stories and voices. Young voices!! - not the same old tired faces and stories.

I love your channel. Come for the insight. Stay for the facial expressions. I thought a part of the interracial marriage aspect had to do with marriages that would combine wealth. You definitely saw that discussion between Molly and her family. While I don’t think someone like Martin Scorsese can get deep enough to truly make a film that fully explored the Osage culture and thought process. However I’m glad he made the attempt. I’m hoping we get more 1st nation films.

Your review is even more fun after I have watched the movie.
The guy who wants to Adopts the kids n then killed them but gets caught beforehand he's the one who pulls the trigger on Anna. Ernest brother was helping him hold her up but that guy who looks cold blooded pulled the trigger in the film.
DiCaprio second Oscar would be so nice.
Definitely possible- voters should love all the complexities in the role, which Leo does a fantastic job in illustrating. In riveting fashion, he had me constantly wondering about the mindset of his seemingly-dim character.

This movie pissed me off in all the right ways. This is Scorsese's 2nd film that made me mad. The first was the wolf on WallStreet. So good. De Niro was absolutely disgustingly great. DiCaprio also was of course fantastic. This is a must watch. It's based on a true story...
Of course the interrogation scene, which Joseph mentions as an Oscar-worthy moment for DiCaprio, was the point I finally HAD to hit the restroom after three hours, so now I'll have to track down those five minutes at some point.

@@fishjellyfilmreviews Thanks for the heads up concerning a key scene I missed most of! I'm a movie nerd and want to see every second of a film, especially maybe the best one in a 3.5 hour epic. And note to Mr. Scorsese: if William Castle can have a "Fright Break" towards the end of his classic, "Homicidal," than this movie should have a "Bathroom Break" for five minutes when hour three starts- it's only fair to the viewer.
For me the best part of the movie was where the guy said get your pencils. I thought that part was funny. I liked this movie even less than you did. I gave it two stars, but I did also like the radio show at the end.
Three hours twenty six minutes. Not including 25 minutes of trailers and ads. Somehow heartbreak feels better. No, Ms Mrs (I don’t keep up with celebs) Kidman.

Also one of the members who saw this filmed wished it was from an Osage perspective which I agree on. On the positive note this film probably made people more aware of the historical tragedy that befell the Osage nation
That was most definitely my least favorite part: I never felt sorry for these women at all because they chose to marry those guys.
After all the Israel-Hamas war coverage, nothing screams palate cleanser more than a good old 4 hour misery porn flick from Mr. Scorsese... just what the world needs right now!

Hale, the DiNiro character was a cattle Baron but was also either the Sheriff or a deputy at the time so he had stature in the community which is why he was revered in the town.
