    Don't understand - what is the purpose of this?

    • @janepianotutorials

      My purpose? to honor a request. Feedback from one recently: " I know you have a very decent amount of subscribers and (surprisingly) active commentators in your channel, but I do want to personally thank you for the YEARS (and thousands of hours) of work you have done for the youtube's "sheet music illiterate" piano community, so to speak. I can personally read sheet music (as painfully slow it is), but I often check some chords or tricky parts (when playing by ear) from your videos or get ideas for what new songs to learn. I hope you know you have given countless people immense amount of joy and a possibility for people to enjoy music and playing even when they cannot (for one reason or another) get music classes or learn reading sheet music. So, thank you Jane. I hope you know you are appreciated and I hope you keep doing this as long as you feel it's not too much of a hassle. All the best from your oldie subber from Finland - and best of health and happiness for the future."

      fair enough - myself, I can't see much point or enjoyment in watching someone practise very slowly!

    • @janepianotutorials
      @janepianotutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      this is not practice. it is purposely slow to show notes and counting, for those learning to follow the score. we all make mistakes playing without realizing it, right?

      not for enjoyment purposes :)

    One of the most endearing pieces of romanticism... Would be flying in heaven if I could master the necessary technique to play it...
    Seems so easy watching your fingers flowing on the keyboard... but it's definitely not. You sight read it almost at the normal speed... Amazing...

      Thank you, Schlomoh. You play pieces more difficult than this. Perhaps just one line at a time will simplify the task.

    • @kerawelt2008
      @kerawelt2008 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes... one line at a time... very true...
      I guess wouldn't it be for your modesty you'd have made a good bundle of dough by teaching the piano... Sorry for again chipping you humbleness :)))

      Know of no piano teacher who made a good bundle of dough by teaching. Do you?
      To any young person reading this, wealth comes from saving, investing and compounding, the key is to _start early_!
      Had we not done that, I would not have had the means and freedom to devote myself to this project. I would be one of those retirees pushing carts at a supermarket.

      You are perfectly right Jane. I admit I was a bit excessive. Just wanted to pay homage to your skills.
      Actually 100 000+ subscribers are rather happy you did as you advise them to do... :))

    Hi Jane. I recently stumbled upon this piece and I have to say this is one of the most beautiful compositions I have ever heard. There are lots of tricky places here to be able to play as if one's singing. I can play up to the end of the arpeggio section, just before the final climax. I'm happy to see you covered this music as well. I will be taking notes especially where there are triplets on the left and doubles on the right. Those are tricky.

      Kudos to you for learning such an advanced piece. I made polyrhythm tutorials that might help. Enter that term in the search box of my website?

      @@janepianotutorials i actually think it wasn’t that difficult to learn the fingers. Now, playing musically - that seems like a totally different ball game. Listening to Martha Argerich helps a lot tho!

      @@kimjh128 Absolutely, without feeling and expression, it is just typing on the keys :) Did you see the requester's video after he learned the piece? Link is in description

    • @kimjh128
      @kimjh128 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janepianotutorials wow that was really beautiful... it's slower than the tempo that I had in my mind (especially the rhythmic portion of the left hand) but nonetheless the final climax (the final variation of the first verse) brought me to tears, which was a big surprise to me. It is amazing how everyone interprets Schuman's inscription of "innig, lebhaft" differently and I don't think there is one correct way to accomplish that. Yu structured the dynamics very well throughout the whole piece and it was really heartfelt and moving.
      Although this is written in Ab major, i do feel there is a sense of insecurity built in the whole piece (semi-quavers and triplets throughout the left hand accompaniment implies this in my humble opinion) - as if it the singer has gone through many troubles before realizing his/her love is finally coming to fruition and is moving forward to realize the long-awaited promise. I wonder how you would choose to play this piece - in a more lively/agitato fashion or something more soothing like the requester has done here.

    May I ask where you got your sheet music fromÉ @3:37, the chord is rolled and I heard a lot of pianists play it that way, but my sheet music does not show it as a rolled chord. Also any tips for how to voice the chords. I find it very tricky to get just the one note in a chord to really stand out. I can kind of get it to stand out, but it still is not loud enough. I tried putting more pressure on that note, but that for me is that hardest part.

      Did you check the intro panels? I usually add an image of the IMSLP edition shown. If I didn’t, check IMSLP, the best site for free downloadable classical scores. It is difficult to emphasize one note of a chord. It takes tremendous finger muscle control. Keep playing the one chord and experiment until the note is stronger? Also, holding it longer might help.

    how long do you hold the pedal ?

    • @janepianotutorials
      @janepianotutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See the bottom line under the bass clef? Press the pedal when you see "Ped", an let go at the star (*).

    • @TheDrakulie
      @TheDrakulie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. is it true that using the pedal is really up to the pianist ? someone told me to just use the pedal in a way that i think the music sounds good to me and how i think it should sound.. of course, this would never work in competition. lol but it might work for recital purposes.

    • @janepianotutorials
      @janepianotutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless the composer specifies pedaling (Beethoven did at times), I think it is up to the pianist. Playing is subjective, artists have distinct style, touch, ideas... no two performances are identical. But when learning, it is logical to follow the editor's recommendation...

    • @TheDrakulie
      @TheDrakulie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree completely. good example is Lang Lang and Ev Kissin's performance of this piece sound completely different. both are virtuostic performances but Lang Lang seem to accentuate the romantic side of this piece

    I think it doesn’t work as tutorial for 2 or 3 reasons:
    1) people able to play “Widmung”, have a first sight faster than this. No one would start to read it at 60 metronome...
    2) even at this speed you have ALWAYS to think at “music sense”, not just press the right keys. And even at this speed, we should perfectly understand and follow the melody.
    3) I’m not sure about your left hand fingering. It will work at the end?

    • @janepianotutorials
      @janepianotutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It may not work for you, but works for others, esp. the person who requested it.
      Re your reasons:1) those can use the speed tool.
      2) my tutorials show only notes and counting -- for occasional reference.
      3) in tutorials, I obey the editor's fingering. however, fingering should always be adjusted to suit one's hand structure.
