- In this video, I share with you tips on performing Schumann/Liszt "Widmung", one of my all time favorite Liszt transcriptions. The lieder, "Widmung" was part of a collection of 26 songs that Robert Schumann wrote for his wife, Clara, for their wedding.

Thank you, I agree with you re the music. It is the only piece of Liszt I actually managed to play reasonably well, back in the day-way back! The lesson was well devised.

You brought chills down my back at many places in your interpretation, and of course, especially in the calm melodic parts, tears to my eyes. I think I would much prefer Schumann's original as Liszt gets carried away in many of his transcriptions. I would prefer to hear you play this simply in a straight-forward way without the crashing arpeggios and chords that Liszt preferred. However, THIS piece is now among my favorites of all time! Thank you!
Absolutely, this is the best rendition on the internet. You channel and express so much emotion it is hard to keep back the tears from pouring down my face. Amazing! The only person I've heard who comes close is Nelson Friere. Amazing.

Thank you so much for this video. It is so helpful. One question. In the transcription I have by Liszt there is what seems to be an added vocal part above the piano. This part has the left and right hand notes. During the virtuoso part above the piano part, there is another voice which has sets of three 6 eight notes, with one note per hand. Should this part be played as well?

Thank you for your comment! You see this often in Liszt's scores. There are two options for the performer. Usually the one version above is more virtuosic. It is up to you to choose the version you perform. Hope this helps!
Exactly. Interestingly enough, Martha Argerich (for example) plays the less virtuosic accompaniment before the climax. It’s a matter of choice.

The one glitch is that the recording of the piano playing is much louder then your voice speaking and I had to make repeated volume adjustments to understand you.

this piece by Robert Schumann just makes me cry..... I have always felt that Robert would have never played the end loudly like so many do, but now after hearing your description that Schumann would have ended it very peacefully I said to myself YES! I think so too,... Yundi Li really presents this piece how Robert would have wanted it played. At least I think so... but not the live version uploaded by Rodney2Marsch, that version is terrible, and ballistic fast and full of mistakes.
