I am a homeless woman in America. I live in my van because rent is so high here in Colorado Springs, CO. I love hearing about how things are over there. It really warms my heart. I even get a little teary-eyed seeing how you all usher people that need help into housing. I have gone through some really traumatic injuries that have caused me chronic pain. I've also struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life. The two ping pong off of each other most of the time. It leads me in a downward spiral that is so hard to get out of. I've sought help so many places to keep me from being homeless only to be turned away because I do not have children or I am not an alcoholic or drug addict. If i had the resources and time to stop and breathe and be able to get my things in order and heal I truly believe I would be able to get off the streets and get my life more centered. I applaud Finland so much for their efforts to take care of people. For me, I still keep trying and making it with two steps forward and sometimes one step back. I hope I will eventually get there to where I need to be. Thank you for sharing this Chico! Your spot on with how California is not able to do this here in the USA.

I think that because Finland is not the most millionaire-friendly country (big taxes for the rich too) we're able to afford this level of success. The US is going to see it's first trillionaire in the next decade or so, and the billionaire class is only growing their wealth faster. Tell you what, the money doesn't come from nothing, it comes from driving up the price of real estate and rent. The billionaires have benefitted a lot from the housing crisis, and will continue to do so. As a result, homelessness is only going to increase. If the society isn't built for the people but for business, it's never going to solve that problem.

It is wonderful that you are learning about the society that you are living in and contributing to now. Check out a video on the Finnish education / school system next.

Money doesn't disappear into a void. People that live on benefits usually spent that benefit money on rent, food and bills. They rarely own anything big or have a lot of savings. The benefit money is a handout to the owners of the appartments and the owners of the nearest grocery stores. Yes, there is a person that gets to live in a safe place and have food everyday, but the benefit money doesn't stay with those people. They are just a middleman.

You could call it make-up on a pig, it does look better.
But having fewer truly desperate souls makes for less crime.

Social housing unions in Denmark work in a way so that the municipality has a percentage of apartments where they are allowed to assign people.
So the union can serve their preferred renters, but the municipality can decide, perhaps 15-25%, of the residents, they'll subsidise those in most need.
It gives a rather diverse community, but still very safe because there's not so many truly desperate beings, if they're treated like humans they act like humans.
