    Great video and interesting comment!
    I have seen similar issues with water pipe leaks behind drywall, causing termite infestation. Avoid homes with polybutylene pipes although they are covered under home insurance.
    Do not expect Home Inspectors to move anything to do their job. Also, I have never seen one go under a house. A real estate agent's primary concern is making a transaction happen. Dont expect them to notice anything which will derail that purpose.

    I AM WORKIN ON MY DECK. I FOUND A 18” NAIL PULLER FROM LOWES IT HAS A “CATS PAW” TO DIG UNDER THE NAILS INTO THE BOARDS. ITS TIME CONSUMING WORKS WELL AND QUICKER THAN GRINDING. I AM FLIPPING THE BOARDS OVER AND REUSING. HOPE TO GET ANOTHER 10 YEARS OUT OF THE DECK. WHEN I BREAK OFF THE NAIL HEADS (ABOUT 1%) I PULL THE BOARD STRAIT UP AND THEN PULL THE NAIL. THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS. AKES ME THINK AND GOT ME STARTED ON MY PROJECT

    I see comments putting alot of criticism to this method, but if you are not a moron, if you're not reckless and if you have a need to remove an old deck, this will suffice. Most of these thinkers havent had to remove an old deck with really difficult and old nails. I use galvanized deck screws for many many many years which is why I rarely need this method. But with some old methods of construction (and old ways of thinking), a method like this works better while salvaging the materials.
    I think the "set fire to your deck" is probably the dumbest thing Ive read all year. Other than comments praising Nancy Pelosi.

    • @tnoel374
      @tnoel374  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment, and real old deck boards if you only have to replace a few here and there. This works great, as to not damage the other wood you are not taking out.

  • @noc8076
    @noc8076 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    What you need to pull nails and also save the materials is a Slide Hammer Nail Puller.
    Crescent has one. I have a BAHCO that is 40 years old and good as new, so event though it cost more, the handle is better.
    You just slam the head into the wood around the nail, clamp then extend the slider and pull. You will rip out 6" nails with little effort.

    • @andy-jac
      @andy-jac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like my slide hammer too. There is also a leverage tool to disassemble wooden shipping pallets. I like that too. A guy I know; gets underneath a deck and uses a jack and a piece of 4x4 to save the deck material.

    But your left with a nail or screw shank you need to pull out .. it you grind it off , it may be in the way when you reattach a board later.. And , a screw or nail that has started to break down will cause rot in the joist left over the years... Just pull them out to begin with is best and its quicker actually ..

    • @Shalmaneser1

      The best thing about these videos? It attracts people who share their ideas and techniques. I'm looking at a massive re-boarding project on the place I bought - an end of life deck that will need either 75% new boards or the whole %$@# top layer. I had my suspicions about leaving cut nails. It might be a coin toss, will the support be end of life next time the deck needs a top layer or not. The vertical 4x4s will likely need work, some of them are in the ground.

    So this guy towards the end of his deck video tells how he decided to take advantage of a customer that discovered a mold problem the day before closing on the house she was selling. He tells her he will be charging her 3 times the amount because she is in a bad spot and can't sell the house with the mold. He even give legal advice and is wrong on that too. That problem behind the fridge would not stop a sale, smart Realtors would get estimates for proper repair to be done by a licensed person to do mold remediation and would have the cost of that repair escrowed for the buyer to pay the person and have it done right. WOW! I would like to see his credentials for mold remediation. What is worse is from what he said he did to treat the mold was not the way it was supposed to be done. I hope he at least had all humans and pets leave the premises before he started his overpriced cover up work.

    • @cowsongs
      @cowsongs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Besides being unscrupulous by tripling the fee....I saw the other video that shows the mold. Based on what I could find out by a little reading, I wouldn't call that "level 3" (or stage 3) mold. It wasn't even 10 sq ft of damaged area. And as for not selling the house... rubbish. I bought a house that had some mold in a few roof rafters and some sheeting where there had been a leak. The seller simply included a credit as part of the sale to pay a roofer to tear off the shingles, sheeting, and rafters, and replace it all to get rid of the mold. The real red flag to me was that he treated that mold with bleach, which will NOT eliminate it forever. Bleach doesn't penetrate the wood deeply enough.

    Ring Nails counter sunk with a Air Nailer are the problem. Tried this grinder thing and it took too long to get down to the nail head through the wood, grinders don't work that well with wood. If the nails are at the surface this will probably work fine but you still have to deal with the nail shank.

      unless they are screwed in. i just finished breaking down my back deck and I bent a wrecking bar. I don’t think a cats paw has enough leverage.

    Seriously? Literally cut every nail head along an individual deck board X every board on the deck surface? Ummm....no thanks.

    • @drleo2641
      @drleo2641 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're removing the board to discard what's the problem. It tookb 2;1/2 min to remove board without prying against the others. I remove planks every deck repair. That's a win.

      This is not for boards that has nails, this process is for screws. But hammer the nails into the wood after you pull the board up.

    That’s a hell of a job. Just staining the deck alone would take I’m guessing 2 days at least. That’s with using a brush. I know you can spray but spraying isn’t the correct way and will not get into the wood cracks.

    • @tnoel374
      @tnoel374  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes 2 days 16 hours to stain this deck.. I charged $2000.00 for the staining part.

    • @mystorymylife9998

      MR. FIX-ALL INC. when I started to didn’t know better and used Thompson. But that stuff comes off in 6 months. I did a job a few years ago and the guy paid $75 a gallon. Some of that stain is high dollar.

    • @1notgilty
      @1notgilty 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try oil-based, solid color stain if you can get it. The latex stuff is easier to find but you have to re-stain the deck every year if you live in the snow belt. The oil-based stain costs more but lasts several times longer.

    You did it the hard way. I'm a white privileged drafted by LBJ disabled Vietnam combat veteran. Here in Texas I'd go down to the street corner in Dallas, Texas and get me some Illegal Mexican labor. We'd get the job done. I didn't see your safety glasses, mask, or ear plugs. Come on man. Excellent video. Inspectors are bad anywhere I've ever been. Eaglegards...
