    Glad I found your channel. I have to admit I actually like targeted advertising even though I end up spending more money! As an FYI, I have had the experience on multiple occasions of getting targeted ads dealing with topics I've discussed with friends while we were within my phone's listening distance (but not actually using it). That's pretty creepy! Part 2 please!

    Another approach before deleting accounts is corrupting it; replace various details like name, email, etc. with other things and then delete the account 'later'. Some systems backup/archive deleted accounts instead of removing them and now they will have the 'other' data stored. Some may store the whole history where this doesn't matter and some may 'trigger' into a different state keeping more if you change certain details so likely wise to 'update'(=replace) least critical to most critical pieces one piece at a time. If you know the company keeps backups for known quantity of time then an update interval longer than that would be good. Something shorter than 1 month is likely unwise without knowing there are no backups or a short backup window. Once desired changes are complete and more time passes, delete will likely be more meaningful unless they stored everything instead of deleting anything.

      I did what you said, but didn’t waited such time, obter ideias about what to do?

    • @mirror1766
      @mirror1766 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southside4182 Not really without knowing the details of data retention of a system. If you already deleted the account and they don't offer an undelete then it is out of your hands anyways but now you know for future systems. The point of what I said is they may have records or backups containing the deleted data so altering it, waiting until the new version is all they have in backups, then pressing delete is more successful 'if' detelted data is not removed; it works under the assumption the whole account history didn't stay on record but that also may not always be true.

      DDG's mobile browser bragged about its privacy feature blocking tracking while it was, without mentioning the exception, permitting Microsoft tracking. Search engines providing data to a 3rd party search interface often have behind the scenes agreements that put constraints on how things work.

    • @mirror1766
      @mirror1766 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on why you want cloud storage and VPN. No provider can offer the same privacy as self hosting for cloud; that could be from running your own nextcloud instance or any method of data transfer could work too but when you say its stored in the cloud, its more secure if you end that statement pointing at a box physically under your control. You can store data on other providers but figure out their business model to get an idea of why they offer that. Google has a history of gathering all data they can to make money from so now you know why they likely offer letting them hold your data. You can defend against that type of issue by encrypting your data yourself before upload (though encryption should be done with an expectation it slows down people getting into the content rather than stops it), but make sure you have a backup of how to decrypt it. Then you have the security issue of how to protect the decryption keys and their backups. If you consider the government of the area which you are in as a threat, cloud providers that have a friendly agreement to their government, and likely a connection to your government, could be a route for government to get access to the cloud data so you may want to consider if there is a less friendly government that would better hold said data (and without risks of them having it being an issue too).
      VPNs are a handy tool which basically moves the point of trust from one place to the next. If you are at the airport and do not trust that they ran a properly secured connection, and that you are actually connected to it, you can VPN to another box elsewhere that is at a location/connection you trust. You could run your own VPN at home and connect to now have a trusted path into it for accessing your self hosted cloud data. Self hosted VPN is not useful if you do not trust your own equipment, and if you do not trust your home ISP then you would not want to surf the web through it. You could move it to some provider you still trust more than the network you find in travel that is ran by who knows what IT person of unknown skill and still get a benefit. Local connection now shows where you are going to for reaching your VPN but not where you go/what you do after that. This of course requires having more trust in the VPN provider than in your own ISP+your own equipment. Setup is easier than following any number of easy to follow documents to run your own VPN and prices are likely to be higher than electrical bill but you can avoid initial equipment purchase if not using already owned/very cheaply found old equipment. If bypassing region restrictions internet sites implement, you would want a VPN to make it look like you came from an appropriate area. If hiding from governments/bad actors, you would have concern about what data is stored/logged about you and your activity and who they are willing to give that out to.

Yeah, if you're a registered voter, that info is available for anyone to just look up. All they need is your name, and maybe your age will help. That's it. Now they know your home address. This is how all those door-to-door people come looking for your support for their party know your name when you answer the door.
