First played this tune about 4 years ago. There is something so unique about it, I listen to it at least once every month. Thank you to the One O'Clock and Hank Levy for this masterpiece.

I had the amazing good fortune of studying composition with Hank Levy for years in the late 80's and dedicated my Doctoral Dissertation to him: donellismusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/TheExoticRhythmsOfDonEllis-Dissertation.pdf I also named my most recent tech startup after another Hank Levy composition... Abovo42 :-) Hank is my hero and Quintessence is one of his greatest in 5/4. I have also grown to become a huge admirer of UNT, the One O'clock Lab Band, and the alumni including Lyle Mays (and by extension, another hero of mine, Pat Metheny) and also Snarky Puppy band members, specifically bandleader Michael League (another hero of mine). TH-cam needs more uploads like this one. :-)
Yes, Rob did a lot of work with odd-time signatures. I was fortunate to start my jazz playing days in South Florida (Piper High and Broward Community College North Jazz Band) and it seemed like we played almost all odd-meter songs from Levy, Kenton, Rob and when not odd meter Maynard, and many of the musicians from these groups would give concerts/classes/guest play with us. The rhythms were a bit challenging sometimes (particularly when improvising), but always fun.
Beautiful! I played for Hank Levy at Towson State University 1979-1983, getting the opportunity to play this and pretty much everything else he composed under his direction with incredible players. His compositions are the best!
@@teddavies5898 Yes, I played lead at Towson for Hank all four years there, granted for the 11 o'clock band, not the evening/touring band, which had the amazing Chris Walker playing lead. Chris wound up playing lead for the Navy Commodores for 25 years before retiring a couple years ago.
Kerry, happy to hear from you. I used to attend the outdoor concerts every summer, and I still have the 1978 Sheffield studio record. It has stood the test of time!

I was lucky enough to be in a college band that commissioned a composition by Hank Levy. One of the nicest and honestly generous mentors I had.

I met Hank Levy at a Stan Kenton Convention in 1991. Told the man he was a genius! He laughed.
I saw Hank in a documentary he seemed quite modest and might have been uncomfortable , people laugh sometimes to hide that
