This album came out while I was studying with Hank and at the same time, I was a staff arranger with the Army Field Band. Love Hank! What a great musician and a wonderful man.
Every jazz band , whatever their level , has profited by being exposed to Levy's compositions and arrangements . The man was an inexhaustible leader in the world of jazz .
I was in a trombone master class at Towson. One week, the trombone teacher, a part-timer with the Baltimore Symphony (it wasn't a full-time gig at the time), had Hank score some of his charts for a trombone choir, given that just about all the trombonists in the school were in one or another of Hank's bands. The teacher pulled out this chart. One of the trombonists, using the common nickname for it, said, "Oh, 'Change for a Dime.'" Teacher said, "Oh, you want to play that one?" While he was hunting for a chart called "Change for a Dime," we quickly explained that that was the nickname for the chart.
I have thoroughly loved reading each and every one of the stories people have posted as comments on these videos about Hank, his teaching, and his charts. Thanks!
