Thank you for sharing Charles . All the best Howie and Missy
Food Forest Permaculture Hello Howie & Missy! Thank you SO MUCH for the compliment! Canary palms are one of my favorite palms- but they’re also one of the biggest- I’m not willing to loose the real estate of my fruit trees to a canary palm! :-) Charles 🌱👍
Just one point of correction from a WC native: temperatures around freezing do not happen regularly or frequently in the winter bc it's also the rainy season, which provides more cloud cover and/or coastal breezes that generally keep nights above freezing. It's usually only a handful of nights that cause the city to be classified as zone 9b. If freezing temps were that frequent, then the citrus and palms would be off the table. It's important to note that usda hardiness zones reflect only the single coldest temperature seen on average, not the frequency. That's why I love complementing the usda zones with the Sunset zones.
hi charles. question about trellis, its better to use wood, due to wires, or metal wires, from the sun in hot weather that could burn the plant touching the wire?.just wondering way tomatoe stands are made of metal wire? anything with metal wire should be in shade.
rafiqa 1 Hello 👋 I agree with you!! The trellis is better made of wood or non- heat conducting products so as not to overheat & harm the plant parts that come into contact. Great question! Charles 🌱👍
Hey Charles, glad you made it out the bay area. I live much closer to the bay than walnut creek. I grow things on the subtropical and so far they have thrived. My zone is 10a so definitely wide ranges of zones.
Garden Gainzz Hello 👋 I’m there 2-3x each year! I should have mentioned that those who live on the other side of the mountain / ocean-side enjoy a warmer (winter nights) growing zone that opens way more planting possibilities! Charles 🌱👍
@@IVOrganic I live in Hayward, Ca and rarely get frosts. The bay definitely helps. I had my first ripe mango this yr! What also helps is creating a microclimate with the high Density planting. On trial, I'm growing lychee, Longan white and black sapote , starfruit and Jaboticaba. Here in Hayward ..Avocado and Banana on every corner!😄. At the moment, I'm growing Reed, lamb hass, holiday, Sirprize & Gem.
Hello Charles, I have an interesting question I did by accident, so what would happen if I grew some of my fig cuttings with their nodes pointed down? Since the leaf will grow towards the light, the plant should eventually grow upright again correct?
SouthTexasGardening Hello 👋 Not a problem, at all! It will root & grow right side up as if no mistake. One on my favorite ways to root large (3-5 foot) fig cuttings is by planting it upside down, with smaller branches transforming to become the root system, and single above ground stem will bud the future core lateral branches of the tree. I’ll try to find the link where I demonstrate this method: Charles 🌱👍
Subtropical Fruit Garden Hello 👋 I’ll be sure to see your fruit forest post!! And, yes, all the trees planted in this lesson had a wire mesh installed prior to planting to mitigate the gopher- mole issues! Great to hear from you & wishing you a happy new year!!! Charles 🌱👍
Establishing food forests and gardens is something I want to do. I'm currently studying to get my landscape horticulture license so I can start. Very inspiring Charles!
RLBaker That’s awesome!!! I have a dream to do drastically more planting in my future!!! Wishing you the BEST with you studies & keep me posted! Charles 🌱👍
I'm in 9b in Florida and those trees and plants look like different than mine. I have a couple of the same trees and plants. Maybe the hill sides effect differently
TheJman Hello 👋 The hillside ensures that the roots never get waterlogged & rootrot; but hillside irrigation has some challenges. I lived almost a decade in Palm Beach County- where I planted one of my favorite backyard orchards w/ golden coconuts, mangos, avocados, passion fruit, bananas, etc, etc... General tip: What grows well for you, plant more! What counties to struggle to perform for ‘too long’ replace with something new (a new planting opportunity). Charles 🌱👍
Hi Charles. Wonderful video. The fruit trees on the property you toured look absolutely phenomenal, but what's even more impressive to me is the lack of weeds I saw. I don't know if weeds are more sparse in Walnut Creek, CA than they are here in Lincolnton, NC, but if not, someone worked their butt off clearing that property of any non-fruiting vegetation. It looks so clean with only the wood chips and fallen leaves covering the garden floor.
Fiver Lemonyoliveloaf Hello Chris 👋 Its about an acre, and took about 7 full days to plant the nearly 100 fruit trees! I meant to count them all on this trip- next time! Charles 🌱👍
Caden Oyaknow Great suggestion & I love pineapple guavas! My friend Alan has about a dozen strategically planted for privacy & food! Here was that tour I did earlier this year: th-cam.com/video/sAr3AMIgYno/w-d-xo.html Charles 🌱👍
The drought and fires are causing a lot of rodent problems for California residents. It's sad, the poor critters don't have enough water to survive, so they're moving closer to peoples' properties now.
Laura Ellen Hello 👋 When the rodent population falls, many animals in the food web suffer. Worse than fire, I believe, are residents, businesses & government parks that use rodent poisons that easily find there way into the food web, including pets. Repellents, then traps, are two less impactful ways to control rodents with less impact on the community ecosystem. Things will keep getter better with education- hopefully! Charles 🌱👍

Can fruit trees grow in containers for years? If so which fruit trees grow the best in containers. I am in zone 9b AZ.

Your family fruit orchard looks great! I use gopher mesh when planting my fruit trees.
By the way, I just posted an update on my fruit forest as well.

You should try growing pineapples guavas. Beautiful edible evergreen that you harvest in winter an grows well in your area.
