I am in Sacramento County - 9b also. I also created a Food Forest in both front and back yard. First, I had nursed plants while living in a duplex for the years I was looking for a home. I brought those, several blackberry, lemon, and fruit trees in pots. Planted those and began layering more in. Used card board with wood chips from a neighbor tree trimmer. Soul is still clay where bare but all areas where I can get the plants to grow perennial, the souls are holding lots of moisture. Trying adding beneficial nematodes this year. Added those under mulch from tree leaves that fell last fall. I keep a spreadsheet of well over 100 plants that work. I have been keeping a journal for years, over a decade. I update my spreadsheet every year when plants die and I add plants. I have shared that sheet in PDF for friends. I created a table of plants to seed each season in our home to plant annual vegetables and flowers. So good to see and hear someone else doing similar in Northern California. I have two neighbors who also have similar yards. I began this project to model after my grandparents who grew the fruits and vegetables I grew up with in the 70s. I grew up starting in the garden with my grandpa at age two. A friend who is Amish used to use my front yard for his family. He also brought his toddler daughter to garden with him. He grew where until his family moved back to their Amish country across the USA.
Your next project is obvious. You need to make a grey water system. The detritus from your plants with your grey water will help you grow a carbon rich soil exponentially. What you have done is commendable but you need to evolve to the next phase.
I finally found someone in California actually taking advantage of their back yard. I just don’t get the purpose of having grass. It’s almost useless and wasteful. Edible trees and plants are much more beneficial. For me watching something grow (not grass) and taking care of it is so much enjoyable and comforting. Eating the results of your labor is even more satisfied that hard to explain.

Kyle, I enjoy all your content but this tour was incredible, especially with your new tropical section at only 8 months in the ground. Near Phoenix, Arizona we got a little colder this year with a week under freezing and down to 26 in my yard so my uncovered subtropical plants look a little rough. The growth your trees achieved is phenomenal. Love the ice cream bean trees. I put in 6 this past year. Congrats on establishing paradise out your back door!

Thank you so much for sharing your amazing fruit forest and knowledge. I hope this year to be able to acquire some fruit trees and plants and start my own fruit forest. Blessings your way.
Thank you! This project has been so interesting and fun!
I remember when you first bought this house, the tomato bean garden used to be where your tropical food forest is! So satisfying to see the progress!!! Always nice to see your videos! 🌱🔥🚒🍍🍋🟩
Fantastic food forest! I believe the wax jambu fruits dropped prematurely. In my experience, the seeds are plump and have a brown colour when the fruits are fully ripen.
Good to know! Thank you

Thanks Kyle I’m also living in Northern California indeed it’s a tropical states so eventually all these tropicals fruits should be tolerated and grow well off within all these climates. Thank you for introducing your tropical fruits trees in N-C ! 😁🙌🥰
That mimi papaya is very unique,so much to learn from you Sir
Thank you for sharing
I’m speechless ! You sir are a genius. For 10 years+ I lived in tropical countries wanting to bring the tropics home to Santa Rosa but all I tried to grow were palms not thinking what you’re growing would thrive in our zones. Now I’m too old so I must watch you to find the joy in what you are growing . Thank you thank you for your showing me that it’s possible ! I’m wondering if you were educated at Davis and if that has anything to do with your successful efforts. Kudos to you ! You’re amazing !
Im a gardener near you in Sebastopol. Bored of the apples and grapes. Great info here! Amazimg we can grow so many fruits in N Ca. I tend about 300 kiwi fruits but the squirrels raided us in late March. Just saw them in a store for a dollar each.
I grew up in India , I love your Tropical jungle, I grew up eating Jujubes, guavas, Java apples. Sapotas, mangos . Living in Illinois I can only dream of having tropical plants , but I have tropical flowers plants that I take indoors in winters, my jasmine, Juhi , orchid cactus , orchids thriving this summer , anyway if you have excess jujubes and Guavas I would love to buy it from you . Thanks for sharing your garden with us .
Thank you! That’s awesome. I don’t sell any fruit
I’ve been waiting for this video since you shared about it in your last orchard video. Worth the wait and inspiring!
