@@urbanfarmstead we lived in New Jersey in Perth Amboy. And we had a big yard. My mom’s Portuguese’s friend was a good gardener. He planted a fig tree. To winterize it he wrapped in burlap and dug a trench and buried under leaves inside the trench and soil. In spring he would dig it out. That presentation on how to prune and where to prune was freaking awesome and simple to understand. Thank you for sharing bud. All the way from South Africa.
Just discovered you. Really good video. I have pruning videos and it's incredible how much our methods align. One thing I'd like to add about the paint - another great option is a lime whitewash - much better for the environment and soil if any gets washed into it. Also you mentioned that you aren't worried as much about the winter sun, and that's because of where you are. However, way up here in Zone 4 it's precisely the winter sun that is of concern and why we also whitewash trees. The winter sun warms the trunk up and it expands. Then the cold night temps come and it contracts. This swell/shrink cycle can split bark and lead to gummosis. Peaches are especially vulnerable to this. So for those of you who are in colder climates and think "I don't need to protect my trunk from the sun", you really should. Great video, excited to watch this grow. You should consider turning that area into a food forest. You can check out my food forest, it's pretty awesome. Basically it would entail adding the 6 other layers of a forest into the planting. Then again, your space is a little more urban (hence the channel) and a wilder look may not be desired. If it were me though, I'd cram the interspaces with bushes, flowers, groundcovers and turn that orchard into an ecosystem.
Great overview. Quality edits and voice over. I’m leaving a comment for algorithm, it hates long videos like this and this is such a nice one for the gardening side of youtube.

Great video! I want to plant a few fruit trees next spring. Please continue to document the progress of these trees, I need all the info I can get. Thanks!
Nice video but just a suggestion- if you plant in an off-set pattern (like a zigzag) the roots will have more room than if you but them in a straight line. That can be a big advantage to those of us with even smaller spaces.
@@urbanfarmstead Personally, I like the look of a nice straight line but was just throwing that out there for people like me who have a lot less room to plant.
Just stumbled upon your channel here and found your video to be quite informative especially for soil prep and pruning. Straight to the point and very nicely done. So new subbie here.
I like how organized your layout is. Good idea planning out the harvest times for each tree. You are certain to have something delicious for the entire summer and autumn.
This is my first video that I’ve watched from your channel and I am totally hooked! Your explanation on pruning was the most clear I’ve ever heard/seen, and turned a previously anxiety-inducing activity into one I think I will actually enjoy. Fantastic! Subscribed!

This year I am attempting to fulfill my life long dream of having a food forest in my back yard. Only thing is I live in Las Vegas and we are in a record breaking drought. :) I appreciate you putting together all of this wonderful knowledge. I've been binge watching gardening and permaculture videos trying to learn as much as I can to keep my fruits and veggies alive.
Finally, a gardening channel near my town. I live here in Vacaville, so we have a similar climate! I am pretty excited to have found your channel. I am starting to plant fruit trees but my backyard is not huge! I often wondered about spacing. I bought my fruit trees online. I wish I found you before I did! Anyway, it is not too late since I learned a lot about planting, pruning, and painting on this video! Will keep on watching to learn more! Thank you so much for a great content. I learned a ton!
I lived in a house in Davis which had 2 bing cherry trees, a pear and a fabulous mature grapefruit tree. Heavenly. This fellow needs some citrus, then his plot will be perfect.
Hi! Beautiful farmstead. Love seeing you plant the persimmons. Wish theyll grow well. I love them but I live in Asia and not suitable for planting persimmons. - MALAYSIA 😀
So great to have found your channel. I love what you are doing with your gardens. I live just north of you in Southern Oregon. I am finally going to be able to get out and do video interviews again with some great gardeners and youtubers and would love to see what you have growing on there, I think that our audience would love to see your garden.
I'm also commenting because of how quality i feel this video is in every way! Love how visually appealing everything is as well... Then people won't be scared to try it because they see an ugly mess presentation, etc. Thanks for inspiring more of us to get our purpose & heritage back... Fresh produce is irreplaceable
What an informative video, I am definitely subbing. This is the best fruit tree planting advice I've found -- all info, no fluff. I'm super lucky that you're in my area too! Good luck with your garden, may it produce for generations.
Thank you so much for such an informational video. My husband and I are in the process of starting our own little hobby homestead and this is so helpful.
Awesome video, Kyle! Over the past 1.5 year, I’ve planted a nectarine tree, 2 lemon trees, a bunch of tomato plants, and pea sprouts. Enjoying it and still learning!
This was such a useful video! Thank you so much for making pruning seem less intimidating, and actually pretty straightforward. Its been the thing I've been most nervous about messing up when we plant our own backyard orchard.
I worked with Kim lyons from Sacramento.. we both lived in England..i still do, you reminded me of her soon as u mentioned it.. I have grown most of these fruit trees from seed & they are doing very well in my garden right now
Video request: video explaining the tools you use for what purposes, which brands and why. I know I need better spinning and pruning shears but I am ignorant about which ones to get or what can be avoided and is not necessary.
Thank you for this request. I’ll probably make a video like this done time, but in the meantime I do have a link here, and in all of my video descriptions, to and Amazon page showing many of the garden tools and supplies I use including my favorite Felco 8 pruners.
Thanks for a great video! Not too complicated, not too lengthy, and enjoyable to watch. It was very educational and taught me, a person completely new to gardening, a lot of valuable tips for planting trees. Looking forward to seeing how your orchard succeeds in future videos!
This was INCREDIBLE! Thank you so much for opening my mind to a new, simple, beautiful orchard idea. My heart was touched by this video. Valuable information that you crafted into this well shot edited story. The information about pruning & irrigation I found exceptionally helpful as a homesteader growing similarly. Thanks again for expanding my mind & garden potential! Will absolutely be recommending this to friends.
Remembering my peach tree from town. I am currently growing some of the seeds that I picked up from the yard. I am looking forward to planting my peach tree in the yard. I brought it inside this first winter
Great video. Earned my subscription. I been watching pruning videos for years and the way you teach I picked up a lot of that. The direction of the buds and all the details no one explains like that. Thx again man. Can’t wait to see what the bad boys look like later.
Thanks for this video!! Just planted a few trees in our new backyard this year. We're also in Sacramento as well so very excited to follow your channel. Thanks again.

I really enjoyed how you explained your thought process behind pruning the trees. Your logic behind cutting above the buds makes perfect sense - thanks!
Absolutely loved your video! It was perfect timing, as I'm about to start my own fruit orchard and needed all the information you just provided. I can't wait to see how it progresses! I subscribed and will watching every video you put out. Great job!👍🏾❤
Where do you get your fruit trees from? Do they all have similar chill hours? What time of year did you plant? Great video and I love your choices of fruit. I never knew about the N. facing buds cut or out facing branches cut.
I’ve been watching video after video for weeks now trying to learn how to make the first cuts to my peach tree. Your explanation, demonstration, and reasonings made so much more sense to me. Now I feel eager to finally help my overgrown peach tree instead of dreading making a mistake. Thank you! I’ll be watching your entire playlist on this!
Love your content and I love how good the homestead looks! You are one of the people that inspired me to start building a garden and orchard for my family. Thank you
Just discovered your channel & subscribed, so excited. Your video was 31:38 informative & I love how very neat & organized you are. I also live in Sacramento & altho have downsized & don’t have a yard I am helping my daughter begin her urban homestead here. We added DG to the entire yard front & back & she will be adding containers for veggies. Today we planted 2 trees. A semi-dwarf Meyer lemon & a semi-dwarf Wash naval orange. Both were in 15 gal containers to get a head start on size & both had flowers with the start of tiny buds. She h/b researching & told me what you just confirmed that removing the flowers & buds will allow all of the trees energy to focus on establishing roots. Hard to do but makes sense. In my own home I just planted a semi-dwarf Eureka pink lemon & a Bearss lime both in 10 gal grow bags & now I am wanting more. You got me excited to plant a few more fruit trees at my house altho will have t/b in containers on a large upper patio with south facing sun. Thank you for your pruning tips & look forward to watching more.
Good thing you mentioned the raining bit. My elberta peach tree will be coming in this Saturday, and it is expected to rain off and on until the end of Tuesday.
Great video. I really learned a lot. The wife wants a fig tree. I'm going to look for the one you brought over to see if I can grow it here in southern cali.
This was the exact video that I needed to watch to answer all my tree questions. I'm going to try the spacer trick on a tree that is growing very narrow that i want to branch out. Currently looking at what/ how to plant a fruit tree! Great video, learned a ton!! Good luck with the orchard.

I"m a real newbie gardener. I wasn't aware of cutting the fruit trees! The video is very informative and clear. New subscriber here!
Thank you! I’m glad you found the video helpful
I love how truck rises during unloading

This year I am attempting to fulfill my life long dream of having a food forest in my back yard. Only thing is I live in Las Vegas and we are in a record breaking drought. :) I appreciate you putting together all of this wonderful knowledge. I've been binge watching gardening and permaculture videos trying to learn as much as I can to keep my fruits and veggies alive.
That’s awesome! Yes, this years drought will be challenging for many of us. Happy gardening!
Have you checked out Back to Eden gardening? Takes less water.
Look at wicking beds - growing your greens is in las Vegas & gardening with Leon teaches low water wicking beds.
Hi! Thank you so much! Yes, I know how nice it is to have a good local resource
Vacaville……cowville?…..funny 😁🙋♂️
I lived in a house in Davis which had 2 bing cherry trees, a pear and a fabulous mature grapefruit tree. Heavenly. This fellow needs some citrus, then his plot will be perfect.
Hi! Beautiful far
Hi, thank you! Yeah that would be fun. I probably won’t have available this summer, but possibly the following summer
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and greatly appreciate your feedback!
@@urbanfarmstead Wow, you even replied to my comment. You've got youtube figured out, my man, that made my day. ✋
@@highfive9835 ✋🏼
Wow! Packed full of terrific advice and great job putting it all together. Your garden looks amazing also. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Love this! Thank you!
Thank you so much for such an informational video. My husband and I are in the process of starting our own little hobby homestead and this is so helpful.
Thanks! its my pleasure to share!
Just what I needed, thanks. I planted a plumb, crab apple, Fuji apple and honey crisp.
Great, that’s awesome!
I’ve learned more from this one video than all the gardening videos I’ve watched this year combined. Thank you!
Thank you! I’m so glad you found it helpful
Can't wait to see this area in the fall. I wish I could do this in my yard.
Thank you
Awesome video, Kyle!
Thank you, yes, I know it can be quite intimidating, especially in the beginning. I’m glad I was able to demystify it a bit for you. You’ve got this!
Useless if you live in zone 4 for varieties chosen . GM
Wow! Just ran into your channel and have been binge’ing it ever since. Much appreciate your amazing work!
Thank you
I worked with Kim lyons from Sacramento.. we both lived in England..i still do, you reminded me of her soon as u mentioned it.. I have grown most of these fruit trees from seed & they are doing very well in my garden right now
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing
So nice to watch you pruning 😊 I use to work as a fruit tree pruner in Sweden.
Thank you. That’s awesome
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
This was INCREDIBLE!
Thank you so much Nicole! I really appreciate your feedback and support!
Remembering my peach tree from town. I am currently growing some of the seeds that I picked up from the yard. I am looking forward to planting my peach tree in the yard. I brought it inside this first winter
Awesome! I hope you get a good variety from your seeds
Great video. Earned my subscription. I been watching pruning videos for years and the way you teach I picked up a lot of that. The direction of the buds and all the details no one explains like that. Thx again man. Can’t wait to see what the bad boys look like later.
Thank you
Man what a great space. Can't wait to do something similar over in Arden Park
Thank you! I’ve seen some beautiful big lots over there in Arden Park.
Wow, so informative, what a fantastic video, makes me wanting to grow a lot of fruit trees in my backyard.
Thank you so much!
Yeah. The spacing really impressed me too. I wonder if all fruit trees can be spaced and pruned this way. Like the Mango & Sapote varieties.
Pete :")
Thanks for this video!! Just planted a few trees in our new backyard this year. We're also in Sacramento as well so very excited to follow your channel. Thanks again.
Thank you! Oh that’s awesome, I know how valuable it is to have good local resources.
Seeing the latest video all of these trees giving great fruits is so wonderful 😊
I want to thank Laura from Garden Answer for recommending your channel. I’ve already watched two of your videos and I’m quite impressed.
Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying them! I want to thank her too!
Just found you mate!!! Subscribed. I have just built a food forest in my backyard and it’s the best thing I have ever done!! Big support from Melbourne, Australia :)
Hi, that’s awesome! Thank you!
@@urbanfarmstead looking forward to learning from eachother mate x
Your videos are very informative! I live in an apartment, but I have a dream of starting my own community garden, so this is good research for me.
Thank you so much
Just planted the beginnings of my food forest in FL 9b! I’m excited to see how my multigrafted fruit trees do. So so happy to find your channel. I’m fascinated by how much knowledge you have. What a gift to us!! Thank you for deciding to share your journey.
This honestly my dream. I didn’t think it was possible till I saw your video. Thanks!
It’s possible! Thank you! Part two coming soon!
Thank you so much! Best of luck with your project
Follow-up question, where are you planning to do your summer garden this year with the fruit trees down the middle and side? Super curious!
raised beds coming soon, but the temporary garden is something i share often on Instagram.
Awesome! Yes, I follow your story there, too. Love your teaching. VERY helpful.
@@This_Holy_Chaos thank you
Pruning them like that they wont get big so I doubt it will be a huge issue
Where do you get your fruit trees from?
Do they all have similar chill hours?
What time of year did you plant?
Great video and I love your choices of fruit. I never knew about the N. facing buds cut or out facing branches cut.
That Staghorn at the beginning is absolutely stunning! I would like to know where you got that or how you put it together?
Thank you! It’s very old, which is why it’s so large. My mon am I actually found it at an estate sale In Monterey years ago.
How interesting. I'm in Salt Lake, zone 7b. I have gave all the trees he planted.
Great, informative video. I'm excited to see how these trees grow!
Also, timing the pruning cuts with the snaps of the song - perfection.
Thank you!
That was an awesome edit detail. Great vid all around
Love your content and I love how good the homestead looks! You are one of the people that inspired me to start building a garden and orchard for my family. Thank you
Thank you so much! That’s awesome! Happy gardening!
Impressive time lapse of the Coriolis Effect at 1:25.
Thank you
Just discovered your channel & subscribed, so excited.
Yeah, best to prune in a dry time
You’re hard at work - Everything’s looking great! Thanks for another fantastic video.
Thank you so much
Great video. I really learned a lot. The wife wants a fig tree. I'm going to look for the one you brought over to see if I can grow it here in southern cali.
Thank you! Great! I think Dave Wilson nursery sells them.
@@urbanfarmstead Hickman CA?! That's far. I was thinking somewhere close to L.A. I love my wife very much but not that much lol.
@@jozer1 Dave wilson is a company who sells to nurseries all over.
@@urbanfarmstead oh cool. When I googled it, it just showed that one spot. I'll look further into it. Thanks
This was the exact video that I needed to watch to answer all my tree questions. I'm going to try the spacer trick on a tree that is growing very narrow that i want to branch out. Currently looking at what/ how to plant a fruit tree! Great video, learned a ton!! Good luck with the orchard.
Awesome, thanks! Toothpicks also work well as spacers.
Finally someone from Sacramento! 💛 Hi from South Sac! Currently in the process of turning our backyard into a food forest too 🙂
