@@cwtek1 How much should the recovery partition be, min is 552MB with no GBT. Mine has no volume letter assigned to it?
@@AnthonyManzio I think if should now be around 800mb, the recovery drive should not have a volume letter assigned it should be hidden from view.

I appreciate this easy to follow detailed tutorial very much. Unfortunately, like the 50 other solutions I tried this month it doesn't work. I'm baffled. I have no windows errors of any kind. My recovery partition is has plenty of room. I'm running Windows 10 Home 22h2. I'm not a noob, I've been on Windows since v1. Every update has been flawless until January. Even though it didn't work I appreciate the run through, I picked up a couple of nuggets along the way, so thanks again!
I hope the automatic fix that Microsoft should be releasing soon will help fix this for you!
Instead of 250, try 500; it should then work. (shrink desired=500 minimum=500)
This was an amazing guide, I followed you along with the MS guide as just reading it was a tad confusing and your guide was perfect, The fact you covered the MBR was perfect as mine is MBR. One thing you missed on the MBR was after "create partition primary id=27" there is 1 more step for MBR and that's "set id=27" according to the MS guide. Thank you again

My other PC’s had no issue with the Windows update as the Recovery partition was over 550MB
Microsoft has also update the Creation Tool for Version 22H2 and the Recovery partition size is now 550MB or there abouts.

I came to this tutorial because I used Partition Wizard tool like I used to do always for enlarge memory partition, but this time gave me some errors while doing its job after restarting and booting the OS. then threw me some errors and my OS just didn't work anymore, so I reinstalled windows10 and tried instead this tutorial, and it worked very fine for me, thank you so much for this solution, new sub and greetings from Costa Rica.
Mate, microsoft has their responsibility to fix this damn issue and its been 2 months they still working on it? its crazy.
yea I had noticed that as well, Microsoft is more focused on installing useless bloatware onto are systems rather than maintaining the security.

Microsoft will not fix this , just follow this video it is super simple and based on official guidelines published by MS
I watched this from a buds pc who was having this problem and was able to fix it. I came back to my pc to make this comment and give a like. Not only that but I let the ads play in full on his pc after the fix. Thanks Chris.

Thank you! It's May 1, 2024 and I confirm that this solution works! If your drive already has an extra partition like a Drive D after Drive C, make sure to select the closest partition (Drive D) to the WinRE partition before shrinking.
For me after the command
C:\Windows\system32>reagentc /enable
It’s says: the windows RE image was not found

Just a helpful comment, in your speaking the commands to type you use the phrase "if you typed it in correctly..." omit the word "in" because it sounds like "if you typed it incorrectly..." after listening more carefully I knew what you meant. Just use the phrase "if you typed it correctly..." don't put the work "IN"....Again, thank you so much for your help.🙂

So you basically said that i just need to wait for a official fix? I´ve been running into some problems lately with my pc like usb-divices disconnect and reconnect after 5 seconds or Valorant not starting. Could this be in correlation with this update? I´ve tried many things to fix these issues like restarting, updating grafic drivers and ofc windows itself
This error should not be causing other problems, I would re getting your pc tested to see why you are getting these other problems.

Thank you so much! I randomly got this update today and it wasn't installing properly. My initial partition size was around 500MB. Increasing it to about 750MB solved the issue.
Thanks. In my system, the recovery is partition 1 and the primary is partition 4. When I free up memory from primary it is unallocated to the right of primary (according to Disk Management) and is not contigous to the recovery partition. When I recreate the recovery partition, it recreate as the original size (not the new size). In reading further it appears that partitions can only be extended if they are adjacent to unallocated memory (?). It looks like diskpart cannot handle this scenario (there are other $$ tools that claim to, but I dont feel like paying for them.) Any suggestions?, otherwise I will wait for the fix from MS

that works if your recovery partition is AFTER primary partition, if it is not, then you will not be able to extend recovery partition

After waiting and waiting and waiting for MS to come out with a fix for this, I finally decided to try the Command Prompt disk part method and it worked perfectly! However, it is not for the faint of heart and I highly suggest you read up a bit to understand what you are doing, especially if you've never used Command Prompt before. You must type everything exactly. One wrong move and you could brick your computer. And if you don't know how to handle any twists and turns along the way, you could have problems. It really helps to understand a bit of what you're doing. So.... it was very rewarding to fix this problem myself. And probably a better move not to let MS come out with a new update that will mess with my partitions. DIY felt better. No guarantees, but worked for me. Tread carefully.

Had this issue within a Virtual Machine and this guide solve it! BTW, my disk does not have the GPT mark and it's not necessary. Now Windows Update is working normally.

Thank you for patiently going through and explaining what each command did as you were doing it. My PC was a bit different, as I had two recovery drives. After deleting the recovery partition at the end of the list, and recreating it, it did not allocate the unallocated space to the new recovery partition. I ended up redoing the process, but deleting both of my recovery partitions, and then when I recreated the new recovery partition it had the space from both of the previous recovery partitions as well as the previous unallocated space, and then I was finally able to successfully install the update. It was only because you took the time to explain the process instead of just showing it, and then I was able to further research my issue, realizing that the unallocated space would not allocate to the new partition because there was a partition in between that and the first new recovery partition that I made, which enabled me to realize what I needed to do to fix the issue, as the unallocated space had gone to partition 3, and the first new recovery partition had gone to partition 5. After going back and deleting my new partition 5, and also deleting the other recovery partition (parition 4), I was then able to create a new recovery partition which had all the space allocated to it from the previous three partitions, which gave me plenty of room to finally be able to successfully install that pesky update. Thank you so much! I am deeply grateful.

Great video Chris, Much more clear directions than Window website offered! I originally did this off Microsoft's website directions but it wasn't successful. I did it again off your video directions and got it to work that time with window update completed! Chris, I just want to say WOW and thank you for this STEP-BY-STEP video I've been on here for years and this is by far the best, and I was able to follow it with out getting lost. Even though it didn't fix the issue in my case, but that is because i tried to download Docker and when I uninstalled it that's when this issue started and it freezes my screen and then restarts my desktop on its own. I think I'm going to have to factory reinstall my desktop before it gets worse. But once again thank you for this and I just subscribed and am looking forward to checking out the rest of your vids.

talk about life saver and hes here im definetely subscribing and jokes aside i watched so many videos of other peoples methods and they were not working but this just did i just wish i found this video sooner thank you i wonder what more probem solving videos you have in that channel seriously thank you.
This essentially worked, but my recovery partition was #1 after fresh Windows 10 install and my workaround end up being yet another clean windows install and then manually via 'Shift+F10' during Win10 installation settings running these commands:
diskpart
select disk 0
clean
convert gpt
create partition efi size=360
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"
assign letter=S
create partition msr size=128
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
assign letter=W
exit
Then I installed WIN10 on the newly created 'Windows' partition. After Windows install I attempted to write the recovery partition manually, but end up deleting it in the end because during updates windows automatically created its own recovery partition some 537MB in size. From then on I could follow this tutorial to increase the recovery partition size to 793MB and get the KB5034441 update to install.

Place them in your description, user error is unavoidable at least try to prevent it.

I can just agree with others and thank you for the perfect solution. All the Microsoft Troubleshooting sites advised to wait for Microsoft's official fix. Just wait.
With yours I was afraid if I would mess the partition and the whole Windows installation with it, but worked like charm. (And my assumption is that this resize will be a future proof solution.)

I did this 3 months ago thanks to you, on an old inspiron 1545. I realized my other laptop precision m4400 is better so I pulled the ram & hard drive out of it & doing another fresh install, now I’m doing it all over again! 😡😂. This is embarrassing they’ve sold tens of millions of these machines & 7th gen intel on back don’t wanna just go & install windows 11 on a incompatible system…..

Use the Minitool Partition program to Move/Resize Partition on C drive and then add space to the Recovery Partition.

If i do this shrink command it calls: The specified reduction size is too large and results in a volume that is smaller
smaller than the minimum volume size.

@@cwtek1 Its been like 2 months now. I dont think they care about this update tbh. Its sad how they abandoned the problem and you are forced to do work-arounds. For a few pc-s its okay. But its a much bigger problem...
