you dont need to type "Application Data" at least in windows 10. In windows 10 the 'Application Data' is a link file(directory) that points back to 'c:\ProgramData\' The command 'dir' in 'c:\ProgramData\Application Data' won't show anything due to the linking. Let's say you have Adobe then you can cd ''c:\ProgramData\Application Data\Adobe" or ''c:\ProgramData\Adobe" and in both instances it will be the same Adobe folder. So typing ' c:\ProgramData\Microsoft' should be sufficient. Also ' C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\' is yet another link to 'c:\ProgramData\'. I'm sure this applies to other windows besides 10. Note that links are not shortcuts.
I usually, run sfc /scan then open another cmd as admin to fix corrupt files; and run: net stop wuauserv Net stop bits Then go to rename Software distubution folder then go back to the cmd and run Net start wuauserv Net start bits then check the updates or Software center ( depends on your kinda work) Its worth repairing ccm as well to repair software center. Im having a problem when trying to delete or rename those directories When i try to delete softwaredistribution, it says that it cannot be done because the files are being used by another process When i try to delete catroot2 it says the same thing. What can i do?
I did not expect that to work on Windows 8 (not 8.1, original Windows 8), holly! I literally tried that out of curiosity due to similarities compared to Windows 10, but I literally got 3 updates on my Windows 8 laptop.
Thank you very much for your well-explained and easy-to-follow instructions. I'm currently carrying out the procedure to see if it fixes the current Windows Update issue in my Windows 10 Pro system. Can you please let me know if the steps will still work if I do them with Windows booted up in Safe Mode, or will I be missing something there? The reason I ask is because while I was doing it with Windows booted normally, Cryptograph service kept failing to stop (whether by CMD or in Services app) although I launched Command Prompt as Administrator, and also some file/folders couldn't be deleted/renamed due to some process still using them. (I therefore aborted the procedure at this point, so I don't know if any of the remaining steps would've worked or not). I'm hoping, in Safe Mode there will be less obstruction from various background processes.

From Windows 10 17 to 20, I had Windows Update stop working. Every time I had to download and update my usb installation pen, and reinstall Windows. It was 4 frustrating years. Not that I reinstalled, just because Windows Update stopped working, but for other Windows issues, so maybe once a year. I have a very complex set of software and settings, so it takes a day or two, to reinstall everything. And it's not like I didn't try to fix Windows Update. I've tried every suggestion I could find, but they never worked. Although I haven't seen your approach, but a variant of it. I concider myself a superuser, as I've tinkered with dos commands, since the mid 90s,and fixed a lot of people's computers. This problem, however, was never solvable for me, on my own computer. Since Windows 10 21,I haven't had the problem, and I didn't change any hardware, method of installation or software, so it must be Microsoft that fixed something in Windows.

@NazForeverYoung correct. Always run cmd as admin. I'd like to be clear on one thing. I am not a computer tech, nor do I speak computer. Everything I've learned is from YT. A lot of ytrs aren't that good at making thorough content and or are horrible at responding to questions yet still want you to sub and like. My rule of thumb is if they don't do neither of the two I push on and keep searching until I find it and you will find the correct one with some patience.
..and for those of us that have completely disabled windows update there seems like a good number of things we could use there to free up space that isn't being used for anything. :)
Thank you for this great video. Soon I am going to try out all command line commands to see if I can fix my windows update loop which has been affecting my computer for the last 6 months. Everytime I start or shutdown my PC it does an update. I tried the Windows update troubleshooter but it is totally useless. I will create a CMD file with all those commands to be executed in a batch.
I did everything smoothly, there were a couple of hiccups (my laptop is OBSOLETE but I can't part with it!) the problem was that I could not rename the Software Distribution to another name. Now crossing fingers and see if my Windows Update will work!
I've tried like 50 videos including this one and the broken windows files video and still no luck. You went a lot more in depth than many other videos which I like but my issue is still not resolved. Do you have any others suggestions or tips?
My Windows Update stopped working after I went from Win10 to Win11 on a laptop as a desktop, so with many peripherals attached. I went through this whole thing, as well as more than an hour or other procedures, and finally I disconnected my laptop, and that worked. I could kick myself because I read somewhere else about peripherals being a problem, but I think it just said when upgrading a laptop, disconnect peripherals.
Great. I was getting desperate, but this really worked. Well-presented: every step is very clearly explained so that I retained a sense of trust and control throughout the whole procedure. And the updates are working fine now. Many thanks!
My friend I have a huge problem and could really use your help I'm sure you get this 100s of times a day but do you have any advice for a PC that is getting a flickering screen everytime I even click on update windows? I have manually updated the drivers and that didn't help, I Uninstalled my graphics card and reinstalled that didn't help, and I can't run the PC in safe mode at all without it having the same crashing issue.
All seemed to be going well untill i got to catroot2. It says....The process cannot access the file because its being used by another program. And access is denied if i try to change the name as well. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much Can i at least continue without this?
Plug out your ethernet or disable your WiFi if connected. In addition to the aforementioned services, stop the below services aswell... net stop msiserver net stop dosvc Don't forget to start them when restarting the other services.
I was experiencing this too. If it is still the case run the "net stop cryptsvc" command again. Not sure how but it was still running after the first time and is what stopped me
I also felt like the trouble shooter was useless, not until when I couldn't activate my windows due to some errors, I tried all TH-cam recommendation but to zero success, so I just gave troubleshoot a try, and boom, it worked like magic, the sweetest part was that I didn't have to purchase the activation keys, sadly it doesn't work on all computers...
The "update and shutdown" was acting strange for the latest Windows 11 update I did yesterday. It restarted my pc as usual, but then my pc just shut off without doing the "updates installing" screen. I turned my PC back on and all was fine, but then it said again when I went to shutdown that there was an update pending...so I did update and restart this time. Again, didn't do the "updates installing" and it showed that I needed to update for a third time, so I went and manually checked and installed the remaining update and that finally fixed it. Getting really tired of Windows 11 shenanigans...so far the worst Windows experience I've had.
Great video! You should make a video on how to avoid the automatic update to Windows !! from Windows 10. As far as I know, there are some scripts for Power Shell to accomplish this, besides turning off the TPM on the Bios.
I just followed all of the procedures for the DOS stuff. I couldn’t get net start appid… whatever… to turn on. It got a 577 error. I said screw it and then tried to reset my pc. It’s fudged. Don’t follow this advice if your windows 10 will not update past 20H2 to 22H2. It set me back further than I was before attempting this advice. Hey dude, nice soup catcher
To fix Windows Update if it is not working properly, you can try the following steps: 1. Manually check for updates by going to Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and then click Check for updates. 2. Restart Windows Update services using Command Prompt by following specific commands. 3. Run the System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix corrupted system files. 4. Download and run Windows updates manually from the Microsoft site if necessary. 5. Ensure all services related to Windows Update are running properly by following specific steps. By following these steps, you can troubleshoot and resolve issues with Windows Update not working effectively.

Thank you . I think I'd pay good money to have all of this in a single Batch File I could run (hint). I'm not that confidant in my PC skills . Also , my specific issue with Windows Update failing is due to a Microsoft "bug" apparently . I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 and now when I try and Update Windows10 I get an Error that tells me I don't have a valid License , which of course I do . I can see it ! Would all of your suggestions in this Video resolve that or am I still looking at another issue ? I am curious if your Advertisement for purchasing a Microsoft License and replacing the old one might work. Your thoughts ? Cheers ./SRK

Take a noote for one IMPORTANT thing, also when its irreparable, may ocur Damaged and corrupted files in the drive, then a sfc/scann or an Dism may be necessary too, if none of those things works as the commands in the vids and windows files checkers, then sorry but you may need save yourself all that you need and Re-install entire system again.
A lot of people are reluctant to use CMD and update problems can be fixed by checking Services except for complicated ones. This might be different in Win 11 but no sane person would use that until it becomes functional and less 'Big Brother'. Troubleshooting can occasionally identify printer problems and indicate network cards in need of attention.
You don't. This is just the first step in troubleshooting when Windows update doesn't work. The vast majority of the time it works fine without any issues.
Okay so I followed absolutely everything like double and triple checked doing each step. But for some reason I still have this update error for my windows 10. I thought maybe I needed more space on my pc so I deleted majority of my games. Should I just hard reset my pc at this point and start from complete scratch? Or will this error still be there to haunt me?
Sometimes Windows Update breaks Windows Installer Service when installing updates, essentially updates stop installing. In this case stoping/starting MSISERVER helps.
Smart Linux will be my next computer. Never buying a computer that requires windows ever again they force updates on you when you dont need them, and eventually sabotage your computer if you delete the updates they downloaded, inevitably forcing you to keep the updates ... which you never needed to begin with its all a scam FYI - viruses come from updates, not searching the web. This is done deliberately too
I'll have to try this, for some reason my laptop keeps restarting the updates, I don't know if it's because I'm using it for a couple of hours a day or if there's a network problem...
Gold rule is NOT install when there are major updates, delay it 1month and no issues since years, aside from doing my geniuses from time to time I have no issues
Thank you ... Everything worked using the manual method you detailed, however, Windows Update > Check for updates doesn't comeback with the 23H2 update. I'm running on a Dell Latitude E6520 (unsupported). Is there something else I should do to this to get the update?
When a major build update comes out Microsoft pushes it out over a period of time so it doesn't overwhelm their servers by having everyone download it at the same time. I upgraded my test system this evening to 23H2 and had to download the Windows 11 ISO from the windows 11 download page and then I just did an upgrade using the ISO.
I wouldnt mind a video showing what symptoms ould show when an SSD or HDD is failing. I had a problem with my laptop where a failing SSD would cause windows update errors, system file corrupts and it would look like a software issue than a hardware issue and all videos I found didnt really cover the in-depth mechanics of why and how an SSD fails or ways to see the early signs.

I usually, run sfc /scan then open another cmd as admin to fix corrupt files; and run:
net stop wuauserv
Net stop bits
Then go to rename Software distubution folder then go back to the cmd and run
Net start wuauserv
Net start bits
then check the updates or Software center ( depends on your kinda work)
Its worth repairing ccm as well to repair software center.
I just subscribed!
Thanks so much. Finally fixed a Dell XPS laptop that wouldn’t update. Your instructions and delivery are exemplary.
"The troubleshooter has restarted the Print Spooler Service."
And that's it. For 10 years that's the only one that's worked.
Im having a problem when trying to delete or rename those directories
When i try to delete softwaredistribution, it says that it cannot be done because the files are being used by another process
When i try to delete catroot2 it says the same thing.
What can i do?
I have the same problem did you manage to fix this?
Same
Very well explained.
My question is can we just make a PowerShell script that will do all these steps at once?
I did not expect that to work on Windows 8 (not 8.1, original Windows 8), holly!
I literally tried that out of curiosity due to similarities compared to Windows 10, but I literally got 3 updates on my Windows 8 laptop.
The couple of times it crashed on me I just made sure windows update wasn't running, cleared out that softwaredistribution folder and did a restart. 👍
Dearl lord. Quite possibly the best advertisement for moving to the Mac OS I've ever seen.
I remember building a script that did something similar on Windows 8.1, might update it for Windows 11.
Great video, I'm not sure how Microsoft could possibly have goofed up something so vital as this. And hopefully they release an update in the future that fixes this ridiculous problem. Amazing video so glad I found this channel. Also, could you make a video or short explaining how to disable widgets completely? It annoys me how I can't uninstall them and I can't find what service it is to disable them. Any help from the comments would be helpful too. As always stay safe, and keep up the great work.
13:21 you don’t need that if you restart your computer.
You didn’t disable those services. Just stopped them temporarily. After a restart they are running again without any additional command
Since Windows 10 21,I haven't had the problem, and I didn't change any hardware, method of installation or software, so it must be Microsoft that fixed something in Windows.
i use to get multiple errors and retry while installing windows update and to fix it saw many videos and end up to this video that actually helped and fix that for me , thanks
Wonderful and well detailed video. The information presented is always to the point without any fluff. Thanks for posting such gems.
What if you get access denied?
Not sure if you still need it. But here is the command prompt to give you access.
bootsect/nt60 sys
@@rafaelcadena44Having the same issue. Tried what said and access is denied to that too.
Don’t know if u still need it but try this, icalcs c:\windows\winsxs\* /t /q /c /grant administrators:f
Run cmd as admin?
@NazForeverYoung correct. Always run cmd as admin.
I'd like to be clear on one thing. I am not a computer tech, nor do I speak computer. Everything I've learned is from YT. A lot of ytrs aren't that good at making thorough content and or are horrible at responding to questions yet still want you to sub and like. My rule of thumb is if they don't do neither of the two I push on and keep searching until I find it and you will find the correct one with some patience.
Omg Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!! My computer wasn’t letting me update for the longest!!! this helped sm!
dawg i love your shirt
Thanks. There's a link for it in the description.
..and for those of us that have completely disabled windows update there seems like a good number of things we could use there to free up space that isn't being used for anything. :)
The EASY way is to simply have backups so you can go back as soon as something breaks!
Your instructions resolved the issue on my end! Thank you so much for your help. Now I'm interested in checking other your videos.
Just when I thought I’d found a solution. Thanks for the video. Don’t still understand why it keeps giving me errors
that was super simple and helpful thank you
Needed this exact video today. Knowing Windows, Ill be back again someday. Thanks for the help pal.
This didn't work for me on Window 11. Is it the same set of instructions for Windows 11?
I did everything smoothly, there were a couple of hiccups (my laptop is OBSOLETE but I can't part with it!) the problem was that I could not rename the Software Distribution to another name. Now crossing fingers and see if my Windows Update will work!
Well done! Thanks so much. You really make my day. Thanks again.
When i was at delete it says it was being used by another process at 6:39
Great Comprehensive video! - Thx - It's now in my 'how to' favourites ;)
I've tried like 50 videos including this one and the broken windows files video and still no luck. You went a lot more in depth than many other videos which I like but my issue is still not resolved. Do you have any others suggestions or tips?
Mine Also 😞
Thanks for the video, extremely helpful as always!
Didn't work for me. Why?
My friend I have a huge problem and could really use your help I'm sure you get this 100s of times a day but do you have any advice for a PC that is getting a flickering screen everytime I even click on update windows? I have manually updated the drivers and that didn't help, I Uninstalled my graphics card and reinstalled that didn't help, and I can't run the PC in safe mode at all without it having the same crashing issue.
This video is one of the best videos explaining and solving computer problems ever.
All seemed to be going well untill i got to catroot2. It says....The process cannot access the file because its being used by another program. And access is denied if i try to change the name as well. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much
Can i at least continue without this?
x2
same here
you can also use the command 'cd %programdata%' or 'cd %allusersprofile%' for accessing 'c:\ProgramData\'
When I try to rename or delete SoftwareDistribution access is denied. Please help me what do I do
Plug out your ethernet or disable your WiFi if connected.
In addition to the aforementioned services, stop the below services aswell...
net stop msiserver
net stop dosvc
Don't forget to start them when restarting the other services.
I was experiencing this too. If it is still the case run the "net stop cryptsvc" command again. Not sure how but it was still running after the first time and is what stopped me
I remember the time when the fastest way to fix windows was "Format C: /Q".
🤣😂🤣😆
I also felt like the trouble shooter was useless, not until when I couldn't activate my windows due to some errors, I tried all TH-cam recommendation but to zero success, so I just gave troubleshoot a try, and boom, it worked like magic, the sweetest part was that I didn't have to purchase the activation keys, sadly it doesn't work on all computers...
I can't delete catroot2 because cmd says the file is used in another process.
same
you have to stop cryptsvc a 2nd time, same issue with softwaredistribution, where you have to stop windows update a 2nd time
@@Jospa44 Thanks that helped, I stopped it a second time and rmdir catroot2 /S /Q worked
Windows update broken? You don't say.. Let's talk about it!
Gave up in end
Same, can't stop catroot2 and I think some of my files are corrupted so I dont even think this will help
Thank you. I was able to finally update Windows
Great video! You should make a video on how to avoid the automatic update to Windows !! from Windows 10. As far as I know, there are some scripts for Power Shell to accomplish this, besides turning off the TPM on the Bios.
I'm in the middle of a windows 10 update crisis right now but damn that joke on your shirt is funny!
I followed this and it workd, great video!
FANTASTIC flow cmd.... !!!!! thank you it happend in win11... thank you Sir...
We have all likely been here at some point. Almost as annoying as the time it can take for Windows update to check for updates.
The CMD section of your video does work in windows 10 stop bits (service not running). stop wauaserv (invalid command). etc etc
Man, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. It's very simple and easy and was solved my problem. Thaks thanks and more thanks
To fix Windows Update if it is not working properly, you can try the following steps:
I finally got so fed up with windows buggy updates, that I simply said NO MORE and disabled it permanently!
Thank you so much for this video man. I followed all the steps exactly, and things are now working perfectly 🙌 Fantastic information, and I will undoubtedly use this video many more times in the future. You sir, are a legend. I am now a very grateful subscriber 👌🇬🇧🇺🇲🍻🍻
Another reason I've stayed with Win10. Never had a problem with those things.
Does this work for windows 11 home edition?
Great video. On a few, rare occurrences the troubleshooter has worked for me.
Just got a Beelink Mini-12-S-Pro, and Intel wants me to install a driver update, but Windows won't allow it. How can I install?
Thanks for the Video and the notes. I made a complete cmd-script from it. So I can a single script.cmd file to get done the whole work what you do from hand. Thanks again.
huh, flushing the DNS is actually quite the safety improvement too from what I read so, a good cmd prompt to know :)
Windows update troubleshooter fixed things for me. It convinced me to use Linux.
hello! on win 11 for a laptop update was screwed, BUT helper did hel restarting it, great to kno how to manually! and... 5:40, missed the oportunity for showing "/ah" switch. Thanks!
what kind on pc case do you have can you write the name its looks awsome
Windows Update Troubleshooter found errors for me just one time. And it wasn't the olde "Pending Restart" thing either.
You could have mentioned the clock trick at the start of the vid mate, cheers
Take a noote for one IMPORTANT thing, also when its irreparable, may ocur Damaged and corrupted files in the drive, then a sfc/scann or an Dism may be necessary too, if none of those things works as the commands in the vids and windows files checkers, then sorry but you may need save yourself all that you need and Re-install entire system again.
I've tried 2 things that windows Trouble Shooter (sometimes) works for: Audio issues, and LAN connection issues..... but mostly they don't work.
Thank you for your help, honestly baffled that you have to do this stuff to be able to update
Would factory reset help do anything?
Sometimes Windows Update breaks Windows Installer Service when installing updates, essentially updates stop installing. In this case stoping/starting MSISERVER helps.
Had the Windows Defender not update. Been searching for fixes. Finally found one. 2H22 is updated after downloading the update about 10 times.
Went 100% Linux 3 years ago.
Popcorn! Yeahhh!
Smart
Linux will be my next computer. Never buying a computer that requires windows ever again
they force updates on you when you dont need them, and eventually sabotage your computer if you delete the updates they downloaded, inevitably forcing you to keep the updates ... which you never needed to begin with
its all a scam
FYI - viruses come from updates, not searching the web. This is done deliberately too
I'll have to try this, for some reason my laptop keeps restarting the updates, I don't know if it's because I'm using it for a couple of hours a day or if there's a network problem...
Gold rule is NOT install when there are major updates, delay it 1month and no issues since years, aside from doing my geniuses from time to time I have no issues
hey rich please tell me what's your technical opinion about modified windows versions like tiny 10
I did an entire video about it.
@@CyberCPU ooh, i wonder how i missed it
thank you rich ,the debloating windows video was very informative
Personally I've have actually had the troubleshooter fix issues with Windows Update before. That said, I work on a LOT of systems (high hundreds to low thousands in a given year). The number of times I've seen the troubleshooter fix a problem is more than one or two hands worth, but isn't all that high either. I agree that it's a great concept (and maybe all this work in AI will help) but in practice it really hasn't been worth the time.
