I held on to some of my kids stuff when they moved out (son joined the military and daughter had college housing). I had their stuff for a few years but when I downsized, I told them to come and get it all because I could not take it with me. My downsized home has very little storage (not sure if that is a good thing or bad) and I barely got all of my stuff to fit…I had downsized before I moved, getting rid of 40% of my belongings, plus another 20% after I moved because there was no place to put it.
That’s what happened to me. I still have bins for both my girls. One lives in a tiny rental with her baby, so has no space, and my other daughter is an ER/Critical Care doctor of veterinary medicine, having graduated in May, and has an apartment. The other problem is that some things from their childhoods I think they should keep, and they don’t even want them! 😂
For those of you downsizing, I highly recommend taking pictures or making a video of all the storage areas in your new home -- each drawer, closet, etc. When it's time to move, pack for those spaces first so you know what is actually going to fit. Something that I did that was helpful was that I numbered each moving box/bin and then kept a document that briefly described the contents. That way, I was able to easily find what I wanted to work with once we moved everything. Because we moved during the big shutdown, we ended up hauling everything to our new place but at least I knew which boxes/bins had what we needed and that the others could just be stored until we had a chance to go through them.
Thought for you. Instead of getting rid of your sideboard ( I think your setup looks nice there) just move your chandelier so it is centered over the location of your table. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the center of your room, but instead hang it where it works for your furniture placement!
Hi Bobbi, I am with you declutter every so often, we have just tackled our garage. We have just done a clear out of my mother in law's house, she had kept every greeting card from everyone for about the past 30 years!!! That was just the tip of the iceberg. Not only was it distressing for her because everything had become sentimental but it was also difficult for us to put her through it. My husband and I said if something happened to us both tomorrow - what would the kids be left with to clear out and we just can't do it to them. So every few years we have a big clear out. Have a great weekend God Bless 😘
My husband had to clear out his mom's house after she lived there for over 40 years. His parents saved everything. You are giving your kids a great gift!
Great video! Great decluttering ideas. I’m not a clutter person, but I’ve been in my home for 47 years, and decluttering is an on going thing. I’m starting to declutter, and am more conscious of it lately. “If you don’t love it or use it- out it goes!” I live in Mi., and it’s a cold, long winter, so I need to do the coat closet, and bedroom closets, to put summer/ spring jackets away, bring out the gloves, boots, etc. There is only 2 of us living here, and my coat closet is small. You made me think I should do that today. Thanks, Bobbie!🤗
You are so right. My husband of 48 years died unexpectedly right before the world shut down. After a year I decided to sell our big home so literally had to do all this by myself as only one of our 2 kids lived here. I moved from 3500 SF to 1100 SF. It makes decluttering easier! But such a huge task…do it more often
Just found your channel and love this! I'm in my 50's with my last kiddo having just moved out a few months ago. While I love my son to death I am also so happy to have all of his stuff out of my place. I had already decluttered about 80% of my own stuff and household stuff, but the difference now is night and day. My only real issues now is I am a bit of a book junkie and prefer physical books rather and ebooks. I might be buying a new place that is a bit smaller than what I'm in now, so I'm trying to scale things down even further than I already have. I am enjoying keeping my belongings to a "minimalish" level. Can't wait to see your next video!
Books are hard, but if you have already read them donating them would be a great gift to someone else. I have kept a couple books that have the most meaning to me, but all the rest are gone. Thanks Gwen!
Thanks for doing this. I've been going through my things & half of my front room is filled with things that I'm going to give to some elders in my village. It's a long process. I appreciate you being here !
We’re downsizing now and have bought our new home already. My son and daughter in law are also moving out just before us. I’ve been offering them anything, especially in the kitchen, that I don’t want. We are boxing up anything they want and the things they don’t we’ll donate.🥰
Just did my coat closet not that long ago. And realized it needed painting too. Thought I could get done quickly, but it turned into about a three day project. 😊
I’m 57 and live in Texas. I would be team Rachel! I have a coat, vest and hat/beanie problem! Why🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ I live in Texas, it’s Nov. 9 and still in the 70s. 😂😂 I guess my thought is that I will be prepared if my dream of moving to a colder climate ever comes true. I love watching your videos. You are so easy to follow and listen to. Your tree is gorgeous! We have large trees, but our leaves turn brown. 🍁💕🇨🇱🍁
I think wearing good shoes to do any type of housework is really important. I see so many videos of people cleaning in their stocking or bare feet and I think, if they only knew how much more tired they are after doing that work without shoes on. It makes a huge difference to me.
@@MindfulMidlife Also, you can run out to the trash can or put stuff away in the garage or run the charity stuff to your car and not have piles still to deal with just because you don't have shoes on.
Your tree is so beautiful ! 🍁🍂 I think I agree Racheal may have a coat problem. 😆 Everything turned out so neat looking, and I have those woven plastic placemats and love them. The round one’s although cute, would be too chunky for me, but would look good on a table as a centerpiece with something decorative on it. My junk drawer is so so bad ! You’ve inspired me to do more organizing. We don’t have a basement, and miss that. Some don’t like basements but, I do. You’re forced to keep things cleaned out for sure without one. There are pro’s & con’s I guess. 🤷♀️
Haha, she absolutely does Debbie! Our basement is on the list of places that need a deep clean. We have to wait until Rachel moves out since it's full of her stuff. Happy Organizing!
A moment before you said "Rachel has a problem", I thought the exact same thing 😂. The question I have started to ask when decluttering is "does it serve a purpose?", which can even simply mean that I like having it. We're 50, and I've said to my husband that we've reached the point where we need to stop accumulating, but he's not quite on the same page as me, yet 🙏🏻. You did well, thanks for sharing.
Great video Bobbie, you’ve inspired me to tackle this! I’ve done a bit of organizing and decluttering lately but I know I can do so much more. By the way you have a beautiful home.
Just a suggestion, cat toys in one container, eye stuff in another container. Then you have those extra containers for other stuff or just empty space.
Great video & tips. I wonder if Rachel has a coat thing, instead of a shoe thing😀 This past week I started sorting out loads of paperwork. I put it all on my lounge floor but seeing it all there really discouraged me. I’m now going to put it on my dining room table & sort through about 4 things at a time. Much easier. The tree is beautiful. Autumn is my favourite time of the year.
I never empty things completely . I can run out of steam (health) then I have a giant mess on my hands. Instead I use Dana K White’s No Mess Decluttering Method. It’s really helpful.
This is great....especially going into winter its good to be organized for jackets seem to take up so much space....i am the Rachael in my family...lol..i have so many jackets...but its from when i was size 8 to what i am now size 14...some 12 that still fit...but still...i have given up ...finally ...the" i will keep it for i want to ge to that size again" thinking....if i did not my closet would be so full that my hubby would have no space in it!! Just my thoughts on those woven placemats, do you have a crafter friend or the school that might use them for a wall craft? i can see them as that but i would get rid of them. The flat ones are the nes i got a few yrs ago and have not looked back. They are wonderful if someone spills and i even use them as a table runner in the middle for putting the food on when serving. just saying you wont regret it! 🤗💚💜🙏
I had no idea that people owned multiple coats. I've only ever owned one coat at a time. Always seemed like a "you only need one" type of clothing item. 🧥
I must be kin to Rachael - I LOVE coats and jackets ! I probably have 25 myself ! I have slowly been declutterring my house too and I also do it one small area at a time. I say the same thing that you do, if I had to move would I pay movers to carry this item or have to move it myself? I have a very hard time getting my husband to let go of ANYTHING !!! He is such a pack rat and he has a huge shop in our backyard that is loaded with stuff. I try to tell him he doesn’t use 80% of the stuff in it and he agrees, but he won’t let it go. So frustrating !!!
Mine won’t let go of his stuff either. He tells me he might need it some day. I figure when we move, he will be forced to go through everything and make that call. Whenever I find his stuff in the house that he hasn’t touched, I have some boxes that I put them in. He says he’ll go through it eventually. I figure when that happens, he’ll just throw it all in the trash. But that way he can’t get upset with me for throwing it away. I told him this weekend, if we’ve forgot we have it, we don’t need it.

Don't assume you want to downsize. When my brother retired, he wanted to go from managing his employees to managing his wife. She told me that when my own husband retired, I should get the biggest house I could afford. She made miniatures and she said, "Sometimes I get in among my dollhouses, and he can't even find me." That was excellent advice. I think that if we hadn't expanded our house, I would have divorced or shot him by now. I actually have the "woven" placements or should say had as I'm moving and donated them. I liked them for everyday as you indicated they are so easy to clean. I brought mine at Dollar Store, I'm in Canada
I would keep the round rattan table placemats and use them instead as chargers. You could place a placemat underneath the charger and it would look lovely. I enjoyed your video very much.
Wow! That tree. Gorgeous
We love it. It’s now almost bare 😕.
My experience is that just because your kids move out doesn’t mean all their stuff goes too.
We have made it very clear that her stuff goes with her. Although, I do think we may keep a few things until she has a house and a garage.
My boys left and all there stuff went right with them too…
I held on to some of my kids stuff when they moved out (son joined the military and daughter had college housing). My dad had so many hats. When he passed away I kept one to remember him by. Hats remind me of my dad.
Oh, I love that!
I like the way you talk and explain things. It feels calming.

Haha, painting always takes me longer than I think it will! I feel your pain!
I absolutely love you, your content and your home is stunning! Simple, beautiful & airy - my dream home!! Love from Upper Michigan 🥰🌲
I just did this to my closet. So freeing.

😊maybe Rachel will want some of your linens or housewares for her new place.😊
Sadly, she isn't interested so they are going to the donation pile!
You are my hero!

Fantastic video, great job…💜🇨🇦💜
Thanks Diane!
Yup, I also have 3 coats !
I am retired...hoping to move in 3 yrs to smaller...I have started decluttering😊
i’d get rid of the round place mats
Yup! I probably will after Thanksgiving. The plastic ones just aren't dressy enough and I don't feel like spending money on new ones right now.
I have a coat addiction too!
New subscriber here. Great video!
Keep the sea grass placements. They are timeless…
If your daughter likes those things for Christmas, let her take them with her and she can bring them when she comes for Christmas other wise they go.

That is rediculous amount of clothing for one girl. Waste of money. She needs a Dave Ramsey book for christmas .
