Listen i may not play lately....BUT i spend in my youth some years playing CLASSICAL guitar which is very different by what people describe as acoustic and also from Flamengo guitar we see here . In case you did not know as you play electric and electric usually is played with a pick, guitar in music theory is classified as a polyphonic instrument like piano is , in contrast for example to a violin which is considered monophonic as by it's strings placement and geometry the bow can only simultaneously touch 2 adjacent strings maximum. In guitar when one finger plucks like in Flamengo and classical as well those who use fingers in acoustic, he had the option to use thump on bass string and 3 fingers on bottom strings simultaneously, striking a chord, as well play sequentially by strumming which is called an arpeggio. Pick players can only do the later. Regardless of how fast you play (and trust me is not as fast as tremolo technique like for example in piece Recuerdos de la Alhambra) you are limited to 1 note at a time sequentially. And no i am not biased against electric guitar, heck i am a metalhead and enjoy a solo as much as a good riff, but i know the limitations and can distinguish. If you want to understand classical guitar try find anything played by arguably the greatest classical player who was Andres Segovia. And for flamenco try Paco de Lucia or alternatively another great one, Paco Pena

I saw him play in Germany, and he ended up playing for about three and a half hours. Because the crowd simply would not let him leave. He did something like NINE encores. Well dressed People in one of Europe’s great concert halls (The Beethoven’s Liederhalle in Stuttgart), who almost rioted because left the stage. He kept coming back. No one sat down at all for about the last 2 hours of the show. It was described in the local paper as “a religious experience”. A friend of mine who is a brilliant guitarist was there with me, and he had tears in his eyes. He said “it’s like seeing God, but for guitarists”

Estoy de acuerdo contigo, estos genios que llevan ese ritmo, llevan la música tan dentro de ellos, hacen ver como si tocar un instrumento fuese tan fácil. Yo comencé a escuchar música andina mirándolos parecía tan fácil, que enseguida me compre una Zampolla, creyendo que al día siguiente me convertiría en la versión femenina de Leo Rojas. No logré sacar una sola nota del señor instrumento, no, no es tan fácil como se ve.😅😅

"Paco de Lucia" DIDNT KNOW how to read or write music, tabletures, etc.... (you can search it online) He always played "by ear" , all his full life. I think this makes even more increidble and magnific as guitarist......... He always played with him heart and soul. Hello from Spain :)

That's not necessarily uncommon, many great manouch jazz guitarist don't know how to read music (Django, Birelli, Stochelo , Angelo debarre...). Paco is probably the best guitarist that have ever played. I always laugh when rolling stone magazine put Hendrix or else in the first place of any "best guitarist of all time" list. What a joke :)

Master of masters in the art of playing the Spanish guitar. There’s a story where Sting was asked in a tv show what had he been doing during the summer and he replied. I’ve been learning how to play the guitar with the best guitarist in the world. The interviewer said a bunch of very important names and he said: none of them. Paco de Lucia he said. The guy didn’t even know who he was.

Brian Adams was also in Malibu trying to organize the recording of his song "to really love a woman" and asked who the best guitarist was to propose collaborating on his song. They told him that the best was Paco de Lucia, so Brian Adams called his house in Spain to propose working together, but they told him that he couldn't talk to him because he was traveling. And Brian said: can you give me the phone number of where Paco is? and they answered yes, of course, it's in that hotel in Malibu... In the end, Paco de Lucia was a few meters away from Brian Adams in the hotel across the street, and they played that song together.

Paco de Lucía is an absolute legend, there will no longer be guitarists like him. He said that as a child, he practiced the guitar 14 hours every day. Those numbers today are unthinkable, it is an absolute beast. And he left us one of the most powerful quotes (for me) about perseverance and practice:
"If I stop playing the guitar for one day, I notice it. If I stop playing it for a week, my friends notice it. If I stop playing it for a month, the public notices it"
This is not the album version, but a television performance in which Paco de Lucía improvises a good part of the song, with excellent results. Awesome.

Well, you're right. He started very early. I saw an interview with him on the Spanish TV, many years ago. The interviewer was insisting so much on this "talent" thing, Paco got kind of annoyed, and he cut the interviewer off at the first chance saying: "Yes, you're right, I've been blessed with this natural talent. And because of this natural talent, since when I was 5 years old, I spend up to 14 hours PER DAY practicing the instrument". 😅🙂🤦🏼♂
If you want to get a better glimpse of his incredible talent, you should watch ANY of his videos in which he plays either "Bulerias", "Almoraima", or some other classical flamenco... Guitar solo, I mean. THAT is actually something to break one's brain apart. 😁
And if you want him playing with another INCREDIBLE guitar playing, check "Mediterranean Sundance", both with Al di Meola or with Al and John McLaughlin. There's a number of those performances live videos. 🙂
Another great guitarist that is emerging recently is a young Italian guy named Matteo Mancuso. His fingerpicking style is unique, and he's been praised by a number of great guitarists, including Al di Meola, Steve Vai, and others. Check any of his live videos, or the official music videos from his most recent album "The Journey". 🙂

Paco lives in those young guitar gods. We can hear his massive influence in Marcin, Matteo, Tim and other insane talented musicians. They take their inspiration from absolute bests.
People usually oppose talent and practice. It's a falacy. Talent determines how far practice can take you. It doesn't matter if it's art, science or a sport, the hard work is a constant for both the talented and untalented.
I NEVER get tired of seeing people get speechless admiring our beloved, our greatest, Paco de Lucía. He is the peak of Spanish flamenco guitar playing, and we are so honoured to be alive to listen to his heritage. God bless him in the sky.
Me encanta ver a gente descubrir a Paco de Lucía. Un niño prodigio de la guitarra, su padre, también guitarrista. Fue de los primeros en mezclar flamenco con otros estilos musicales, le impresionó muchísimo el blues y el jazz y le influyó en renovar el flamenco. Tocó con grandes músicos de diferentes generos, pero a nivel mundial el flamenco no es muy conocido y eso no le dió el reconocimiento mundial que se hubiera merecido.
My father worked for IBM from the 1950s thru the 1980s & our family was transferred to Germany in the mid-1970s. By that time he had earned multiple weeks of vacation so we took 3 of them & drove to Spain for a lovely holiday. One of the campgrounds we stayed at had a birthday party for the owner & we were introduced to this kind of Spanish guitar music. When we asked if there was an artist they could recommend for us to buy a record of, they told us of Paco de Lucia. We got the Fuente y Caudal album & I have been a fan ever since. Idk if you can stand to listen to another of his songs w/out your brain exploding (you came pretty close on this song, lol), but if you think it’s worth the risk I would encourage you to check out the song of the same name as the album. It’s my favorite flamenco type song from his album.
Paco is one of my old guitarheroes. I remember "Mediterranean sundance" he playd with Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin. Stunning. Paco was one of the best. Great guy. Thank you.

Hola,sin entrar ya en sus piezas ya más flamencas y cantadas con camarón de la isla,que eso por lo que deduzco de sus comentarios no es santo de su devocion,ni de la mía.
Pero es indiscutible que es y será un genio de la guitarra por siempre.
Le aconsejo,escuché,"río ancho",que es otra rumba como entre dos aguas y la de tiko-tiko creo es una malagueña,uno de los palos del flamenco,pero solo instrumental,no hay canto.
Ahí hace una auténtica sangría de las cuerdas de su guitarra.
Después ya más improvisación cuando se junto con Jhon Mclawing y Meola en un festival llamado el sundance festival samer,o algo así,mi inglés es nefasto.
Ahí a cual es mejor,madre mía,eso sí es tocar la guitarra,lo demás son tonterías.

I discovered Paco in 1977 and I've been practicing his fingerpicking ever since. He is the master on flamenco guitar! Nobody can come close at least that I'm aware of.
Was at a concert in 1983 in Rome ( teatro Sistina), alt the women were screaming like crazy , he was like a god , it was insane and the best concert I have ever been too 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Something I notice with some of these really great guitar players is how clean the transition between notes is. Sometimes with less talented players you get the sounds of the fingers sliding along the strings between notes, but the releases are so clean and he doesn't need to feel along the strigs for where to go, he just has perfect muscle memory to make the move and confidently press back onto the strings.
Paco was, is and will remain a legend of the art of Flamenco as a guitarist. He was playing with his soul. He didn't even know how to read music. He recorded himself on a tape recorder and memorized the songs by ear.
Probably the most natural and sincere reaction I've seen from this wonderful guitarist.
He is and will be king of kings, his talent and mastery of the flamenco guitar is mythical....he is unique, the years go by and thanks to the dissemination of his work on the Internet, there are more and more reactions and astonishment.... I feel extremely proud to be part of a Flamenco family. My young adult daughter is an amazing flamenco guitarist who not only got to meet Paco a couple of years before his passing and gave her some beautiful words of wisdom and advise when she was on her journey with her flamenco guitar playing. I sent the link to my 2 oldest friends (60 years) - one of whom sings and plays in community choirs and orchestras, the other ran a music store in the 1960's and 70's. They both asked "where have you been?" I was angry - "you guys never told me about him! I thought you were my friends"....🤣 Just watched Paco and Al Di Meola playing Mediterranean Sundance. Two meastros. The music flows through their eyes.

You're right, one of my friends studied music, when he told his teachers that he wanted to play metal, absolutely all of his profesors told him to learn to play flamenco. At first he didn't like the idea, then he knew why. It's incredible how flamenco is its own thing but it is very influenced by Arabic music since Spain was in territorial disputes with Morocco and Algeria.

The "c" of Lucía is pronounced like "th" in english. Keith Richards once said "Some say I'm a guitar legend. They have no idea. There are 3 or 4 guitarists that we can consider as a legend and above all of them is Paco de Lucía".
Lucia was the name of his Portuguese mother. Thus it is pronounced with an "s" sound and not "th".

Thanks for a trip down memory lane. In the 1960s and 1970s I was privileged to witness Andreas Segovia (classical guitar) and Julien Bream (Flamenco guitar)
in concert settings. Such beauty provided memories for a life time.
It saddens me that in the past 30 years Segovia is mostly forgotten.
"Music professionals" (i.e. orchestra musicians and conductors) didn't even take guitar music seriously until Segovia.

Over 30 years ago I saw a live show of Vicente Amigo, considered by many as one of the successors of Paco.
The gig was mind blowing and his demeanor playing was very similar to Paco.
I got a chance to meet him afterwards and talk to him for a few minutes.
When I shook his hand, his hand was almost ethereal. Nimble, bony but also strong fingers.
Very nice dude. Humble and friendly with a huge smile on his face.
It was the closest I ever was of seeing Paco, but Vicente was/is a worthy heir.

When you said it's like breathing for Paco, flamenco was speaking a language. It was a language he grew up with. At first he used his talent to put food on the family table then he nurtured his talent to fill his soul ; this was the hardest part for him to master.
I've been a fan of Paco's for decades. He really is a maestro. But you should check out some of the work he's done with Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin.
I saw THE trio with Al and John twice. Both Di Meola and McLaughlin were rightly in awe of him. He appeared on Al's second solo album and that led to the trio. McLaughlin wrote a beautiful tribute to him. Check out their two live albums, Friday Night in San Francisco and the sequel Saturday night. He plays this piece with Al di Meola and combines it with Mediterranean Sundance.
The Trio also has a studio album Passion, Grace & Fire
True. They did a second studio album in the mid 90s and a tour which was very good but apparently there were some tensions although the music was fine, even if it didn't reach the dizzying heights of the first album.@@richard345

As a Spaniard I can only express how proud I am that Paco existed and that he gave us his beautiful music. "Entre dos Aguas" is one of his best-known songs, but if you want to feel like your head explodes, listen to the song "Almoraima", for example. Or the '88 concert on Polish TV, which is on TH-cam with decent quality. There is much to see and hear from him, his legacy is eternal. The best guitarist in history without a doubt.

Paco de Lucía was de GOAT of guitar players, and its not me who says that but is said for people like Hendricks, Slash, Santana o Keith Richards who consider themselves just rookies in comparison with Paco. Such a stunning technique and speed has charmed people for decades all over the world, playing his signature style. As humble man as great icon, we lost him a few years ago and was a musical tragedy, not only for Spain, but also for the entire musical world. Rest In Peace and Glory, our Lord of the Strings.
I am spanish and I can tell you he was a God playing the spanish guitar. It never will be another one like him. It wasn't only "playing the guitar" it was the feeling playing it. The feeling he got playing the guitar was unique.

I know a story that few know. But it's curious. It turns out that Paco always traveled and did concerts. Well, in Peru, which is a multicultural, indigenous, Spanish, African, European in general, Japanese and Chinese country. It has an incredible musical variety, as good as its gastronomy. Paco played where the Creole singer-songwriter Chabuca Granda was accompanied by a musician who played the cajon.
The lady of Creole music performed "La flor de la canela" alongside Caitro Soto, one of the greatest cajoneros in our history, and Paco de Lucía was fascinated with the instrument that the Peruvian played.
At the end of the party, Paco played with Caitro Soto and realized that this instrument was what flamenco was missing, which until that date had been performed either with claps or bongos and congas. It was more of a joke than anything else. In the end they gave him a box, the best one he had. and that's how Paco brought this Peruvian instrument to Spain and made it part of flamenco.
I'm Spanish and I had no idea of the cajón's origin! I've always thought that it was Spanish by how embedded it was in flamenco music. Now I know. Thank you for sharing!

You have to keep in mind that this man learned to play alone without school or music theory, no one imposed limits on him, he learned by playing without rules or measures, sometimes the rules limit the human being, it is pure instinct playing, especially in those years, he developed a technique personal and unmatched over the years, an example to follow.

He's our pride and joy in Spain, he really is. I wish he was more recognized internationally, although I'm pretty sure that professional guitarists have at least heard of him. There's a metro station in Madrid named after him, of the newest stations, and that made me very happy

I witnessed their grandeur in concert around 1980. Simply the 3 guitarists on stage, by themselves. It was THE. BEST. CONCERT. EVER !!!!!
It was from their 'Fridat Night in San Francisco' album, but there was at least one other album since that time that I am aware of.
I might recommend the duo with Paco De Lucia and AL Di Meola playing ' Mediterranean Sundance'.

When Paco was finishing his album "Fuente y Caudal" the producer asked for a last song for the album, so Paco went into the studio and created this masterpiece in that exact moment.
