I have this charger set up in my 4wd which has a 155ah Gel Agm battery connected to it and as you say in your review you have to have it connected to the car battery to operate it I have a small 12v 12amp agm battery that is connected to the 50amp dc atem charger now and it works fine and also have a 200w solar panel connected I now do not worry about any connection to my car battery when I am using solar . I only connect the dc charger to the car battery when I am driving on a long trip and change over to 12ah battery when camped and all batteries are charged up.
Nice job. You say that the Atem is not suitable for caravans/camper trailers but not everyone uses solar on theirs. I have a gas fridge in the Jayco so I only need power for phone/laptop charging, lights, kitchen pump, exhaust fan and step light. I am thinking of buying the current 60 amp Atem from Sunyee (Easter sale) to charge the third battery from the second battery which get’s its charge from the Ranger starter battery. The Atem would only be used when when driving and current is being delivered to the second battery which is on an isolator to the starter battery. The Ranger is pre smart alternator era. As I already have a spare starter battery I will use this for the third battery. So…. The second (Optima Dual Purpose) will feed the DC to DC charger for the third lead acid but only while driving. The Optima and third battery will share caravan power needs (excludes gas fridge).
Best to check manufacturers recommended fuse input but if you can’t find anything I would go a 50 amp input fuse with 6bs cable .. thanks for watching 👍🍻
Hi mate. Sorry for coming to this late but I bought one and hav3 just got around to installing it on my van. Yes. Bought it some time ago before watching your video. Before I go too much further I was just wondering that if in your experiments, have you attached a solar panel (with solar controller) to the alternator wires and at the same time attached a solar panel (without solar controller) to the solar input? That way you could possibly have two solar inputs at the same time. Any ideas? Thanks
Hi im all new to this so excuse my newbie questions.. I got the same charger and planning to put it in my van. 1. What size cable are you running. Been reading cables for 50amps needs a 6b&s? 2. Are 50amp anderson plugs ok to use for the 50amp charger?
I used 6 bs cable and I’m using the 50 amp Anderson connectors . They are not original Anderson connectors , they are the cheap Anderson connectors on eBay and I have not had any issues with them. Recommended fuses are 60amp . I used midi fuses you will need 3 ..one on the dc in (I actually have 4 as I have 2 on my dc input cable 1 at the crank battery end and the other at the charger end) you need one on the solar in and one on the output going to the auxiliary battery. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🍻
Check this when I built the power box th-cam.com/video/Cir6xQvTCoU/w-d-xo.html .I went from start battery to Anderson plug then Anderson plug to midi fuse then midi fuse to dc charger in case you not sure. I will be doing a van build in the future and I will explain it more detail.
Hi. Thanks for your video. Can this unit charge dc to dc and solar at the same time. Are there any cheaper units that can. I have heard a lot of issues with renogy (which I think can) after sales. Cheers
Your welcome. This unit either on solar or on dc . It will charge on dc when dc current is available. The rumours are true with renogy as appalling customer service if you have any problems. This charger is unreliable as i have to constantly had to disconnect and connect to reset this charger so it keeps working. Do yourself a favour and buy redarc. . Buy once and cry once they are reliable as I end up getting redarc for my camper van conversion. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🍻
Hi mate I've purchased the same 50amp DC to DC charger and have completed the same kinda setup for my camper trailer , can I ask do these chargers have fuses inside because we connected to solar without fuse on inpu,t only 60 amp switchable fuse on output now unit isn't working?
Have you still got the unit connected onto the dc input from the vehicle? There are no fuses located inside that I know of . They recommend 60 amp fuse on the dc input and output. If you don’t have the unit connected to your dc input cable so there is a 12v power source, I found the solar does not work charging on solar
Regarding your comment about the charger not working when only connected to solar. I have the 20amp version and the specs say you need at least 16 volts from your panels to initiate solar charge. Have you tried it on a really good solar day with panel only connection. If what you are saying is correct...it is a bummer for caravan use. Great video mate.👍 PS. On my first use I thought my charger was faulty...wouldn’t let change battery type, but when I disconnected it from the battery I wanted charged I could change the battery type. The other thing to note is the charge will not start unless the battery you are charging has a minimum of 2 volts SOC (STATE OF CHARGE).
thanks fred . it’s also on a sunny day . it’s a real con with this charger ... does the 20 amp version work on solar without an input battery? I have 2 of these chargers and they both not work on solar without the input battery being plugged in. thanks for watching mate 👍🍻
@@EFFICIENTSELF I don’t know as I’m like you, have the battery box for car use only to run the fridge. My caravan has a dedicated solar/ battery setup . Came with the van. I don’t have any portable panels to try out my charger’s solar function. But if it is the same setup as yours then, it’s going to limit its use even on camping trips where you want solar topping up your battery away from the car. Have you contacted Sun Yee?
I just tried the Other charger and it works without battery plugged in .. just for little while it worked and then it cuts off on solar... this is happening with both my chargers so it must be normal for them
@@EFFICIENTSELF Out of interest, try the solar again with the battery box connected to your fridge. The lithium charge program has no maintenance step. That is, if the battery is fully charged the charging inputs turn off. Maybe your battery is fully or close to fully charged and that’s maybe why the solar switches off.....just a theory 😀
I'm getting a low voltage output on this. It won't charge my lithium battery for longer than 5 seconds then flashes 5 times meaning low input voltage. I have plenty of alternator and agm starter battery is good.
Not too sure.. you are better off with a different brand if you using for caravan or trailer... im just using mine for a camper van so the main battery and the unit will never be disconnected... thanks for watching 👍🍻
Hey bruce i recommend you spend more and get the redarc dc charger as my atem power one died about 2 months after warranty expired. . Thanks for watching 👍🍻
Awesome review mate, I was wanting to know which has priority, Solar or car battery and you demonstrated this. The sunyee website does not mention this nor does it have the manual available for download. Well done bloke.
I have never tried it that way. I guess it would work while your engine is running but the solar side will not work as this charger needs input power to function while your engine is switched off. Thanks for watching 👍🍻
I was actually just going to use it to charge my lithium bank through the alternator without solar since it was cheaper than any other dc to dc charger I could find. I got it for 150 us from Ali baba
As long as there is 13.7 volts going into the input with sufficient amps , it should work . (You would think ) . Probably best just to connect to your starting battery if possible. Let me know how it goes as I never tried to the alternator
I don’t rate the Atem 50A charger. Issue I’ve had is after some time of working fine, it just switches off. Have to disconnect from battery to essentially reset it, then fires up again. I complained, so they sent replacement. Same thing. Has anyone else had this issue?
How bizarre I have had the same issue lately but it’s only been on the one charger as I have 2 of them. I found that I disconnect from the aux battery then it starts to work fine again.
@@EFFICIENTSELF Yep, that’s it. I run the unit under bonnet with Aux battery being a AGM. And 200W solar panel continuously connected. It’s a very annoying issue. You get what you pay for....
To connect the earth from your starter battery to the second battery in your boot, you'll need to run a thick gauge wire from the negative terminal of the starter battery to the negative terminal of the second battery. This ensures that both batteries are grounded properly. Make sure to use appropriate gauge wire for the distance and current requirements. Also, use proper connectors and secure the wiring to prevent any short circuits. Thanks for watching 👍🍻
had nothing but problems with the atem on agm and lipo ,bought the renogy 30 amp been a dream product in the boot of my falcon ,thank you

Never tried that lol . I don’t have this anymore as I sold my vehicle with this unit in it …Thanks for watching
Nice little setup. Bummer about not being able to charge on solar without input battery connection.
Thanks Aaron 👍 yeah other than that it performs really well. Gr8 for in back of your patrol mate if you are thinking that way 👍🍻

I mean, charge from solar or charged from alternator, but it’ll start with 12v from a cigarette lighter right? Hope I’m clear
I don’t think it would . Would be way too much current to be connected to cigarette lighter socket . Thanks for watching 👍🍻
