  • In this video How to Stop a German Shepherd from pulling on the leash - Stop leash pulling now Thomas works with a HUGE 115 pound German Shepherd who drags his owner when he's on the leash. Thomas displays how to stop this behavior with positive punishment Thomas walks you through how to use leash pressure to explain to the dog what is expected while on a walk. Within a few moments, you will see how the corrections immediately affect how this German Shepherd acts while he's on the leash.

    Hey Tom. I just want to say a deep heartfelt thank you so very much. You videos have helped us get our one year old super frikkin high energy untrained and reactive border collie rescue to walk calmly on a leash. Finally!
    So many youtube dog trainers just have useless advise on difficult untrained dogs. We were loosing our minds and felt like failures because we couldn't go on walks without major reactivity incidents with other people and dogs. We couldn't give our new rescue dog the good life we were hoping for him. He was having strong potentially dangerous meltdowns regularly. Other trainers just show puppies or already perfectly trained adult dogs and present this fairytaleland story of training with treats and toys and fun stuff only. That was getting us nowhere fast. Noone actually shows how to tame a highly reactive untrained and potentially dangerous dog. Except you!
    So thank you for all the videos. He was scheduled to be put down three days after we got him and we thougt we were saving a dog then, but it wasn't until your videos that he was actually saved.

      What is positive about hurting a dog using prongs? As a Christian, American, proud Conservative, and animal lover, there is no way I can get behind using pain from prongs and shock collars as a training method. There are much better (and more effective) ways to train a dog.

      What’s wise about pain? Look what the Bible says. The apostle Paul wrote most of the New Testament and was often repeating the doctrine of pain/suffering.
      Romans 5:3-4 English Standard Version (ESV)
      3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
      I’m also a Christian :) I love studying Gods Word for direction in real life. I understand the wisdom of training up a child in the way they should go so that when they are older they will not depart from it. I know that animals are not people. Rather man has been given dominion over and have responsibility to care for animals that are dependent upon us who do understand righteousness to instruct them in what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Consequences for wrong choices is part of training them to make good choices that ultimately benefits them. What those consequences are is a matter of degree. If there were never any bad consequences for doing bad things, would that be realistic?
      I have a serious question for you... what personal experience do you have with either a prong collar or e-collar (light, sound, pager, static)?
      I have put them on my own skin. Have you?
      I am not criticizing you for your own personal choice if you don’t want to use or investigate for yourself. However, as a sister in Christ, I believe the Bible teaches us it is unwise to judge what we do not know. Are you basing your negative judgement and criticisms upon how you perceive without knowledge? Is that wise? Is that right? If you were wrong, would you want to know & make correction in order to be made right?
      I pray that you and your animals have all the best.

    just got home from walking my 75+lb, still fast growing, 6 month old shepherd. pulls like a train already, incredibly dog and person reactive. absolute nightmare to walk, my partner wouldn't have a prayer of controlling him which is ashame as she'd really enjoy him if she could. I'll be using this advice doing circles in the garden a few times now to try and get him to at least know who is in charge on our walks... cheers 👏

    For people, I have the understanding that we learn when we're about 80% competent for the task. There is motivation to learn, but we're not set up to fail. With learning comes all sorts of physical adjustments, re-wiring neural connections or establishing new ones. Patience and persistence, things the owners need to work on, are a fundamental key to getting where owners want to go.

    I wish we could bring our 18 month old GSD to you to assist with his training. He is the sweetest family dog, but impossible to walk, listens almost perfect when he is off the leash but once he sees it, once it's on, his drive is crazy! He is too over 110lbs. We have 2 other dogs at home he is good with but after he was attacked at a dog park when he was 5 months old, he does not stop barking and trying to get at other dogs and cats he sees. And every human who is not inside our home is the enemy. Love watching your videos! Fingers crossed our baby boy gets better so we can take him on our family road trips

      This dog WILL lose weight when she is able to walk him safely, no doubt! It makes a HUGE difference. When a dog has good behavior, he is a pleasure to work with, so you do it more often. As you work with the dog, the dog improves, making it even more fun....etc. Same is true of a badly behaved dog. Its difficult, not fun, so you work him less, dog gets worse, its even less fun, so dog gets sedentary, fat, and worse behavior.

    • @Isaac.D.grizzly

      He is a little on the plus side but that's far from overweight. A gsd can normally weigh up to 90-100 lbs and this dog is only 115 lbs. I've seen overweight and this is nowhere close. We can also clearly see how active the dog is which is absent in fat dogs.

    Nicely explained Tom!! I routinely work with a youth organization that doesn’t allow prongs or remote collars in class. However, that same organization does use the chain slip collars. I spent a good amount of time explaining their proper use so that they don’t get used as “choke chains”. That being said, we are working with youth between 3rd and 12th grade.
    Over these last 15 years I still teach positive reinforcement and chaining of behaviors. I’m learning from you and a couple other real life problem solvers why ONLY positive reinforcement takes so long and honestly doesn’t work for a dog who is self-rewarding by fighting, chasing, barking and doing whatever he wants to do without any healthy respect for consequences.
    I totally admire the way in which you introduce the tools you use. A collar on a dog who has only been on harnesses, martingale it slips, prong or remote... it’s all going to be uncomfortable and stressful because it’s different.
    A spoiled child will likely complain or wine or even throw a tantrum the first time they hear the word “No” and meet up with “that’s NOT okay”.
    The methods you use for putting control back in the hands of the handler is a beautiful thing to watch.
    Thank you for sharing... not only for myself, but for those I can now more appropriately guide. All the best friend.

    Another great video and I learn from each video. I have a small Lhasa Apso mix rescue, who is very attentive and after some professional training walks well with the prong collar and even his martingale collar. Our only trouble is when he sees another dog and completely looses it. With the prong collar he is still better, but with a regular collar he keeps lunging and barking. It has gotten a little better over a year... if the dog is on the opposite side of the street and we tell him to "leave it" at the right time, he will ignore the dog.... but a dog walking right at us just makes him loose it. And weirdly enough, he is fine with dogs indoors and gets along with them just fine. I hate when people tell me... that all small dogs are this way... Are they really?

Simply put, does the dog learn to behave only when they have a prong or ecollar on? Then when those tools are not on, dog no longer listens. How do I avoid this association, or is it expected and your goal?

    Hi Tom, I love your videos! Please help me! I just purchased a mini educator collar and I can't wait to start using it. I have a 1 year old Australian Shepherd female. I have only had her since January, but we have been doing some serious training since the previous owners had not done any. She is incredibly smart and has a huge energy drive. We go to the dog park for about 1.5 hours a day and then do about 30 min-1.5 hours of training everyday depending on time. She also eats out of a puzzle feeder morning and night to help with energy release. She has a problem with becoming over-stimulated and then she will bite me on my hands and arms. This happens when I have to restrain her from something, ie another dog that is showing signs of aggression, trying to put on her leash, not opening the door fast enough to go outside, keep her from jumping on someone else. Also, it happens a lot if I have her on the leash and leave her with someone else so that I can go inside a store or something and then she will bark the whole time and then bite me when I return. Sometimes she will just get a burst of energy and run over and bite me. I have tried toy redirection, time outs, yelping, even biting her ear back to show her it hurts. The time outs worked relatively well for inside the house, but now the majority of the biting happens outside the house where I don't have a place to put her in time out. Do you have any suggestions you can give me? She has never broken the skin, but she does leave indentations.

    I have a 2 year old Doberman..Is it appropriate to use a prong collar on a short coat breed?
    Do you eventually graduate the dog from the prong collar to a slip or martingale collar or something else??

      Agree!! That dog should probably only be around 80-90lbs! Because hes definitely a bigger GSD than average, although, if she cant walk him that just means his owner probably doesnt get him exercised often!

      the prong doesn't teach your dog how to walk nicely on the leash. It is to help correct. You do have to put in the time to actually teach your dog how to walk nicely on the leash.

    I have a white sheppard that is 60 lbs and he is terrible on a leash and hates other dogs. I have trained him to best of my abilities but do to work, having a toddler, and our short warm season, I haven't been able to work with him as much as I could. After taking him out this weekend and he being around other dogs a local brewey that has an open area that welcomes dogs, it wasn't enjoyable and I decided that I neeeded further help with calming him down.

    I have a question. My German Shepard is great when walking him, doesn’t pull, heels just fine, except should he suddenly decide he wants to run up to something or someone. Which halogens maybe 2-3 times a month. With the prong collar, he will pull me or even my husband to where he wants to go and we cannot stop him despite pops, pulls, yanking, screaming. Nothing! Luckily he is friendly, but... one day it may not end well. He recently dragged me across a street and I was helpless. I want to take him out more, but until I figure out how to break this, only my husband takes him out now. I would pay to set up an online session with you to help us with this issue.

    Hi Tom. Thank you for letting me ask a question. I have a 4 month 1 week old male and 5 month old female Bullmastiff pups. I had the male at 8 weeks old and the female at 3 months old. The male wants to use the female like a chew toy. His bite pressure has gotten lighter but sometimes I think he is biting her to hard. She doesn't seem to mind and she keeps coming back for more. I want him to chill with her. Relax and just hang out with her. But he wants to be dominant with her. What proper attitude should I take to understand how I should use a proper correction? You are making such a good difference in the lives of so many people and their dogs. Thanks so much.

    • @Jemrisla
      @Jemrisla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This sounds like play. Puppies can be very mouthy! If the female doesn't like it (tries to get away, hide or avoid) or gives the male a correction (a growl or a warning snap or nip), then you can consider breaking them up.
      Best of luck with your dogs!
      (I know you asked this 11 months ago, but I figured I'd answer for the benefit of others reading your comment. Hope your dogs worked it out!)

      I have 3 cats and it all depends on how they are introduced to the shepherd, their own behaviors, and then the limits you put on your shepherd with them. My household is pretty calm with a 1 1/2 yo shepherd.

    Before I knew how to use it correctly I always thought a prong collar was cruel. It is not cruel if used correctly. Much better than a choke chain in most situations.

    Hello Tom! I've been binge watching your videos and absolutely agree with and love all the methods you use. But just a quick question, is there any reason why you don't use the choke collar as much as the prong collar when it comes to dogs that pull? Is it because those dogs you work with are larger? Thank you!

    My dog does well when we walk around back and fourth like this turning and changing directions. When we walk on the sidewalk around the block (straight lines) he feels the correction but begins to pull and pull again. Are my corrections not strong enough it doesn't phase him?

      @@melissaallen964 why would you use a prong leash? If you have to hurt the dog to listen then you are very much doing it wrong.

    • @melissaallen964
      @melissaallen964 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arcadian3090 ....it doesn't hurt.. I've even Had people I don't know put them on themselves and tug harsher than I would on a dog, they don't hurt. It causes discomfort, but momentary discomfort versus permanent trachea damage. Go damage the dogs trachea, its fine.

    • @arcadian3090
      @arcadian3090 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@melissaallen964 You could damage the trachea should you have no idea how to use a leash which is why these individuals utilize prong collars. You could also do even further damage with a prong collar that you don't know how to use.
      If you don't know how to use a regular collar, then what makes you think it's safe for a prong collar? Trust me, a prong collar can cause more damage than a regular collar could ever.

    • @melissaallen964
      @melissaallen964 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arcadian3090 ....yep, flat collar only applying pressure to the trachea where as a prong collar applies pressure all the way around, therefore not damaging the Trachea. Harnesses causing pain the the chest. Prong alleviating all of that, teaching the dog not to pull too, stopping unwanted behavior, stopping them from pulling your arm off to get to another dog and possibly attack them. Teaching the dog that aggressive behavior isn't okay, therefore saving the dogs life.

    My neighbor has two dogs that he is overly protective with when my German Sheppard is around. My Sheppard gets along with all the other dogs in the neighborhood except my neighbors. He will not let them meet and it is making life difficult because we live remote and our dogs are often loose. I have to make sure the dogs next door are not out when I have mine loose. My dog will get aggressive with them. Does he sense the neighbors apprehension toward him and that is why my dog attacks them? Any suggestions?

    Your videos are great. Question....My 167 lb mastiff was pulling me around like crazy. I did not adopt him until he was 5 1/2 years old. The prong has worked great but will I always have to keep a prong collar on him. He is crazy strong but walks great once I started using a prong collar on him. This is the first channel where a trainer says a prong in ok but so many people look at me like I am so mean. I do not really care what they think. They can try to walk him...... Is there a time when I can stop using it on him? To be honest I am afraid to cuz he pulled me down so many times. Just wondering
