      If it's the same experience but better then what's wrong with it
      also seriously if you care about graphics that much in a JRPG, consider yourself an annoying elitist, it will not make that much of a difference when the focus isn't on graphics but on what is actually happening. I can understand wanting stuff to look good but the difference between grass isn't going to make the game a worse or even bad game. Yes I will admit that it does make a difference in how stuff feels but are a pieces of foliage vs extra content really a dealbreaker. I will admit that bad graphics when there obviously was room in the budget doesn't feel right but it's a story focused game.
      This was a rant and what I'm about to say may contradict what I've just now said. I understand that people want good graphics, and I don't blame them for it, but my main point is that complaining about slightly worse graphics in a game makes no sense imo. you shouldn't be looking at the ground you should be looking at the story.

      @@dreamhunter5011 It is a bit of a trade-off, though, as covered in the video. Some people might prefer to trade the improved resolution and framerate, along with the extra content, for the original higher-poly character models and more advanced lighting.

    Another small addition that version S has is that there is now more combat dialogue between the party, just little snippets of chatter back and forth as different battle situations occur. For example, if another character takes a ton of damage, Erik asks them "Are you alright?!"
    It's a tiny change but I like how it makes battles feel more eventful and meaningful.

    I played through S on the Switch without having played or seen the game on PC or more powerful consoles and I honestly had no problem with the image quality. It was a bit soft but it looks good enough and the frame rate is rock solid with zero noticeable dips or hiccups in my 80 hours of playing it.

    • @poika22
      @poika22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Obviously the added content is more important than the diminished visuals but that's not the real question. The real question is: why do we even have to choose?
      On the Switch it makes sense because of the hardware limitations, not so much on the PC or consoles. Saying the new version was developed for the Switch is a cop-out since things like higher resolution textures or lighting quality aren't anything the newer version of UE couldn't handle on those other platforms. It's just stuff they didn't bother to put back in. This isn't a free update, it's a stand-alone game sold for 40€. The least they could do is match the visual fidelity of the original release. There is no reason it couldn't be done, it's just a matter of cutting costs. We shouldn't have to choose between visuals and features.

    • @dcarpenter85
      @dcarpenter85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@poika22 I feel like sometimes its very easy for people like us who just play games and don't necessarily make them for a living to say things like this. There could definitely be some technical limitations or just design decisions that inhibited their ability to reuse the older assets when porting S to the more powerful platforms. For me, JRPGs and especially Dragon Quest games have never really been about exploring the limits of graphical fidelity or technical achievement. These types of games are best enjoyed with the story and the characters and that is where DQXI excels in my opinion.

    • @poika22
      @poika22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@dcarpenter85 I know a thing or two about software development. There definitely can be reasons that make reusing the older assets more complicated than simply copy-pasting them in. There aren't reasons that make it unattainable for a company the size of Square Enix. Like I said, it's a matter of cutting costs. It definitely could be done, in the most extreme case they could've remade those assets from the group up if that's what they wanted to do. I doubt it would have been necessary, but it could've been done if they wanted to. They have the resources to do it.
      Instead they chose to go the cheapest route, porting it from the Switch with minimal changes. You're free to like the characters and the story and everything else, but none of those things would've been negatively impacted by a better technical execution of the re-release. I'm not saying the game is ruined, just that Square should rightly be criticized for their decision to penny-pinch this release.

      @@poika22 Yep, I can't agree more, if you're going to port a game to PC / PS4/ XBOX and it's called the DEFINITIVE edition then there's no reason it should look worse than the original version of the game on each respective platform, if anything it should actually look better. We have improved graphics in games as the generations go on because graphics / aesthetics are a big component to games, else game consoles would of stopped at the PS3 / 360, because realistically both of those consoles are powerful enough to make any game you want. But we don't do that because everyone knows its important. I'll give an example, if Ghost Of Tsushima had a PS3 version, hypothetically and it was heavily downgraded in visuals, it would ruin the overall atmosphere / immersion / experience of the game. It just wouldn't be the same experience on PS3 as it is on PS4. Having said that, I did just buy the definitive edition on PC, I wanna play that extra content, but it IS annoying that I have to play a downgraded game graphically because SE was lazy.

    The original game used Enlighten, which bakes better lighting at higher resolutions, with better Global Illumination and bounce, and has much less expensive realtime lighting support, Enlighten does exist for Nintendo Switch however it's rather costly, so square have opted to use standard unreal baked lightmaps for the Switch version, so the lighting looks very different.

    I have played thru both the original PS4 release and the new Switch version, and while the new content on the Switch version is nice, the graphical difference is jarring to say the least. It's far more noticeable in motion while playing them in person. The texture detail and dynamic lighting effects are the biggest changes, and the difference is pretty massive. Enough so that I greatly prefer the original PS4 release over the Switch version, even without the extra content.
    They also did away with one of my favorite features of the original PS4 version, First Person View mode. The graphics can be absolutely gorgeous in that game, and being able to zoom in on them whenever you want is really nice. The lighting effects in particular as light bounces off reflective surfaces such as floors and walls is particularly beautiful looking.

    Disclaimer: I play on a regular PS4. So it may be that the pro players have a different experience.
    I got Dragon Quest XI S for the Japanese voice-overs and the orchestral soundtrack. After skipping the pre rendered intro videos, I had a huge shock when I saw the environment. Instead of the beautiful grasslands, which could have been taken from a Ghibli movie, the valleys now look like from a PS2 game. I can't say 100% what scales down the graphics the most, but I think it's because of the number of blades of grass, which has been reduced by about half, making the ground textures shine through much more.
    For most people this shouldn't be a problem, but for me personally these feel-good moments, where I just stop and absorb the surroundings, were very important.
    These moments complement this heartwarming story about friendship
    Now when I was outside of a city, I thought all the time about how much better it looks on the "old" version and went back to it.
    At least for me is XI S not the definitive edition.

    In all thank you so much for the video and I appreciate it. Helped me be able to decide what to get it on

    Started on the Switch, now restarted on the One X, the graphics are still an improvement just like the framerate. One of my favourite jrpg's this generation besides Persona 5. Now if only SMTV would get a release date.

    3DS version, without a doubt.
    It’s the only one that looks different

    Playing DQ11 in bed on the switch for half an hour right before bed is of course the best option.
    Thanks for the video!

    I hate how lazy Square is. Instead of adding the new content to the superior PC/PS4 version, they just ported the Switch version.

    Thanks for taking the time to present all the differences in a condensed way. I'm going to end up playing S since the new features are too nice to pass up. I do wish they had delayed the PC release of S so they could develop a version with the original PC visuals though

    As someone who got deep into the 3DS library of games, DQ XI looks like one of the most high production, fleshed-out, and ambitious games on the system that wasn't a port (such as Xenoblade Chronicles, Ocarina of Time, Snake Eater, DQ VIII), along with the Monster Hunter games. The console and pc versions give it the perspective of being inferior, but if those didn't exist, I'm sure it would've been seen as the masterpiece of that system. Kinda reminds me of what happened to Ni No Kuni for the DS.

      Even if the 3DS version is built from the ground up, it is mostly the same game with mostly the same content to the point where saves can swap between the other versions of the base game.
      Simply put, I would call it an enhanced port.

    I’m mad because I can’t play the 3ds version and I can’t even find any gameplay on it either.
    I played the Switch and Vanilla version and put so many hours in it. You bet your sweet ass I’m about to buy it rn and play all over again.

    Playing it on Xbox One X now (it's even on Game Pass!) and performance is sublime. 60 fps with occasional dips (though they're quite rare, and don't really affect the game in a meaningful way), zippy load times, and crisp 4K presentation. Not to mention that the game itself is practically the epitome of classic turn-based RPG design. And holy hell is it long; 80+ hours until credits for the "bad" ending, and another 20+ hours on top of that for the true ending.
    Loving every aspect of it.

    I'm still playing through the OG Ps4 release. If I see the definitive Ps4 version cheap enough within the next year or so I'll wait til then to buy it.
