I adore the DS version. I love the retranslation, I like the extra content for what it does filling in certain gaps in the story like HOW that tiny little town of Porre managed to overthrow the kingdom of Guardia, and I don't even mind the subtle changes to the OST. What brings me out of the experience though are the sound effects. There are far too many instances where various sound effects are just way off from their original. I would still rank the DS version as the best version of the game, but that's one difference worth noting. Oh, and I believe there's one more issue with the PS1 version. A lot of sprite variety disappeared in that version of the game, possibly to help handle RAM limitations, but what it means is instead of the guards in Guardia's prison often having unique color palettes, they all share the same palette.
There's some inaccurate information in this video, and it's missing a lot that could be said about different versions, some of which I've compiled here: - There are lots of grammar and spelling errors in the DS translation of CT - I've listed a bunch before when discussing this topic. The DS translation in general is a big step-down from the SNES translation, losing lots of character and heart. The DS translation sounds very dry and flatlined and compared to the SNES version, and reads like there are no individual personalities and that it's all one sterile personality delivering all the lines. - Combat speed is adjustable in the SNES version (probably in the DS version, too), in the game menu. You don't mention this when initially saying the DS version has a faster battle speed. - There are no new details to sprites and backgrounds in the DS version, and colours, lighting, and shading weren't added in the DS version. The DS version simply has a grotesque yellow filter placed over everything (which I've been told was done due to something about the DS' screen, I forget what), and the player sprites on the overworld map are different (not better, though). None of the individual details you mentioned reflect things that are actually done in the DS version. The yellow colour filter bias hasn't been removed in any of the post-DS versions of the game, and it looks entirely awful. - The mini-map in the NDS version isn't convenient, as CT's environments are pretty simple and aren't confusing. It's just a cheat-sheet that, IMO, shouldn't be there. - The music in the NDS version is lower fidelity, and it also intermittently fades-out and starts over again, which the SNES version doesn't do. - The Steam version of CT has bugs, slowdowns, and choppiness. It also has crashes, and for some people it won't even launch. - There can be an issue in the Steam version with a line of pixels appearing above the text popup box, extending across the entire screen. - The Steam version now inexplicably has added exclamation-mark bubbles over NPC heads whenever the player next to them. It looks terrible and serves no purpose, since every NPC you can stand next to can be engaged with. - The mini games were made easier in the mobile version, to cater to touch controls. I think the Steam version hasn't reset them to their original difficulty, and so are too easy when playing with a keyboard or gamepad. - There is no decent visual filter in the Steam version. The smooth filter is ugly and mis-aligns textures, while the no-filter, pixelated version doesn't look like the original game and is also not very good looking. - The Steam version's font is eye-bleedingly bad, and barely legible on a large screen. It's the font that was used in the DS version, which it was changed to after people complained about the mobile version font that was used. But the DS version's font was specifically used in the DS version because of the DS version's small screen. It's a hideous font on larger screens. The original SNES font is far more nice-looking and readable. - The Steam version's battle UI is atrocious. - The Steam version doesn't let characters be named using a gamepad, so someone playing with a gamepad needs to put down their gamepad and go to a keyboard whenever they get a new party member. - The one good thing the Steam version does is add additional background tiles in some locations, to fill-out the edges of the environment, to fill a 16:9 widescreen resolution. Other than that, the Steam version of CT is a complete disaster, even after the latest patch.
I hate the fact that the mobile version didn't use to have that horrible filter before the release of the Steam version. They released the game on Steam with the filter and updated the mobile version. People on Steam heavily criticised the filter so they made it optional there, but left the mobile version ruined forever...
Yes this is the best way to play it. I have a ps5, a gaming pc, switch and I still return to my Dsi xl. Absolutely brilliant handheld. You can't beat dual screens
@@craigsouthern4793 DS is the best. My favorite way to play the Dragon Quest titles, too. Just finished my collection of 4-9 on DS. More people need to try those games!
Truthfully you can't go wrong with either the SNES version or the DS version. While the SNES version is my personal go to for the overall feel, the DS version having certain features the PS1 did including the anime cutscenes is a nice plus. The sound on that version also still sounds quite nice on the original hardware. The load times in the PS1 version at least in my opinion slow the game to a crawl and the Steam version (or Android version) just has inconsistencies that I can't personally get behind, though if either of the latter two versions are your only way to play, then they can at least be serviceable.
Yeah I remember in like 2004 or 2005 in high school using an old snes rom dumper using floppy disks I pulled chrome trigger off my cart I bought in a store for $40 back then (just the cart too) and played it all the way through, tho I got so mad I missed Magus by saying no to him then saving on accident not realizing that was a permanent choice.. I restarted the entire game and never finished it.
@@moister3727 I wish I could do the re-translate snes version on PC. I can get the pc steam version looking like the snes version but there are no timer bars which is annoying i think, and no re-translation iirc?
I am really hoping for a 1 to 1 remake done with the HD2D, kind of like Live-A-Live is being done with the option to play in the also beautiful original graphics.
12:26 Being a game programmer it is possible that the "shaking" of moving diagonal is because the player is not really moving diagonally but up/left, up/right, down/left, and down/right - alternating between the two directions to give a semblance of diagonal movement.
i'm guessing they added a pixel snapping algorithm to actors, only that the algorithm isn't good. though i'm not sure if the game had any issues drawing perfect pixels on PC, i'm only getting into the chrono games now.
@@simpson6700 This was my guess as well - I'm guessing previously they just moved the sprites smoothly along diagonals, but this caused the sprite pixels to not be aligned to the background pixels, and they tried to fix it with some kind of snapping algorithm but it didn't work quite right
Your channel is absolutely invaluable! I was always wondering about version differences and there isn't a concise way to list them all without a video.
I'm still kinda flabbergasted that they haven't brought CT to the switch in any form yet... I mean we got Chrono Cross of all things... used to hate it, to me it brings shame to CT's legacy lol but I suppose it's alright as a standalone
Can't tell you how excited I was back when this was released on the DS. Out of all the physical games I own, that's definetly the one I treasure the most, and even if the extra content is a bit of a mixed bag, feels like the best version of this masterpiece. Though I wish I had more then 3 save slots though, as I've kept my original save file from when I bought it and constantly have to delete the other 2 when doing a new run (depending on my mood I either replay the game fresh or do a NG+ for a different ending)
The original translation/re-adaptation has no match. The extra features were unnecessary. The dream devourer and Lavos is supposed to be one-hit K.O. with the final of Magus + Marle and Lucca triple tech.
That’s really cool that they actually improved the PC version by adding new details to the sides of the screen to fit 16:9, it’s a real shame no version of this is perfect though. Personally I played the original SNES copy on a real console a little while ago, but the DS version looks like it would be a good way to replay it next time I do it. PC is probably the third best option as I love the idea of new background detail and it’s got most of the bonus content.
the bonus content is dogshit and totally breaks the apcing of the game. It's all optional but barring the endings it adds nothing to the game. The Lost Sanctum takes 5 hours to beat and it's a bunch of back ot back fetch quest 3 hours before the final boss
I've played the original, the DS, and mobile versions. I love the DS port, I've never understood the hate people had for the new optional dungeons. It doesn't change the main game in any way. and it adds several enemies that are difficult even after you've beaten Lavos... hell with poor strategy there's one that's even kinda difficult at lvl 99 lol
I find it odd, but nice, that the PC version of this game got no updates for about three and a half years before randomly getting further updates. Still, they need to fix the music restarting bug and they should add the missing FMVs. The extra screen real-estate on PC looks really nice though. The DS version seems to be the best version in a lot of ways, but the PC version is not far behind, and it is better in some ways.
So I played this first on original hardware and then on PS1 as a teenager. I remember wanting to cry every time I accidentally walked backwards and to the next area because I didn’t realize where my characters were… those load times are so frustrating lol. I loved the added cutscenes. I really want to play the DS version
I’ve long ago sold my DSi when I semi-retired my gaming career, but I still kept some of the titles and this is one of them. My beloved Chrono. I’ve always thought the DS one slightly better than both the SNES and PSX version and it’s good to find apparently others agree. I hope to buy another DS to reconnect with this experience again.
Steam version had a lot of problems on release, but I think it's the most accessible version today especially for those that wanted to play it when they were younger but now quite a bit older. Being able to play it on a big screen (rather than a DS screen) and the speed increase is great.
I finished it on the NDS about 8 months ago and I honestly think it's the best version because of the translation and the convenience of being portable and not having the PC issues Though if you're not playing it on an actual DS I don't think it would be the best for emulation
honestly, ive been emulating it recently because i was playing the steam version and only about an hour in i had numerous crashes and streaming it on discord didnt show any of the cut scenes, so i just moved on over to the ds version but through emulation and its been alot smoother and menus are cleaner as well. only issues are audio is a very minor downgrade and the screen is smaller since it has to display 2 screens (i have the 2nd screen smaller though)
Drastic Emulator for Android does magic with this game, I often forget there's two screens, because most of the time I play it with one screen in full size, so Only use 2 screens when in Menu. Changing this setting are way so easy...!!!!!
I am playing the Steam version now and the Auto function is a blessing when grinding for techs and levels. The only version I did not play is the mobile version and I can say that the DS version is the most complete yet. In any case, there are no exact words when describing the feeling while playing Chrono Trigger in any version. What I felt when I first played the game 27 years ago is the same when I replayed it 27 years later. Pure nostalgia and I am happy playing it over and over again.
Because they are, across the board, mobile ports with shoestring budgets, because the people writing the checks at Square Enix are more interested in cashing in on nostalgia than sharing and preserving their classic library.
@@TonyTonyRedgrave I disagree. I think the pixel remasters tend to be among the best official versions aside from the originals, and in many cases you could make an argument for PR being superior. The only things I care about for ports and remasters of these games are accuracy to the original and error correction, and maybe the occasional unobtrusive QoL enhancement or bonus feature (run button and buying item stacks in FF1, bestiary, art gallery, etc). Anything that significantly changes the aesthetic, gameplay, or story compared to the originals is a non-starter. An exception is made for the 8 bit games' graphics, considering very few ports/remakes use the og graphics for those games. The pixel remasters are almost exactly that. They didn't try to overhaul the graphics (though I wish they hadn't homogenized the menus), the gameplay and mechanics are mostly untouched save for bug fixes, and they didn't try to reinvent the wheel with the retranslations. The only real problems I have with them are a few technical issues, the lack of an original OST option (though the new versions are, on the whole, possibly the best OST remakes I've ever heard), and a hard mode or something to make up for the huge drop in difficulty in a lot of games due to bug fixes and rebalancing, but that last one is hardly unique to the PRs. Those are all relatively minor quibbles, though. Other than that theyre great.
It's funny, despite how slow the load times are, the PS1 version was the first version I played and still managed to be one of my favorite games of all time. The core game is just that good. 😂
Thanks for this. I have been a big fan of Chrono Trigger since it came out when I was a kid. I have always wondered what the exact differences were in the newer versions.
i just found your channel recently due to being fixated on final fantasy and chrono trigger is also one of my favorite games of all time. definitely impeccable timing, thank you for doing this :D
Is it weird that I prefer the compression on the DS audio? There’s something charming and nostalgic about it, even though I never played Chrono Trigger on the DS and in fact never played it at all until recently.
The Steam version works fairly well on the Steam Deck, though there may be a bug where the game reverts back to the home screen when trying to cloud save and play animated cutscenes at the same time. Besides that, since it’s a portable version with a wider aspect ratio, it’s pretty great.
@@timmyp6297 Huh. Didn't know that existed. I might pick one of those up for my Switch. I still prefer the Steam Deck over the Switch by a large margin. The Switch is still great tho. I just played thru Link's Awakening on it again over the weekend. I'm playing the SNES version of Chrono Trigger on my Deck, personally. I was gonna choose the PS1 version, but didn't want to deal with the load times.
Chrono Trigger ranks among one of the best video game RPG's I ever played, along with the Legend of Zelda games, Final Fantasy Games, Super Mario RPG. One game I heard which was really good which I never got a chance to play is called Dragon Quest. Chrono Cross is an unofficial direct sequel to Chrono Trigger or like a spinoff sequel. It is a shame Chrono Break was cancelled, it could have been the official Chrono Trigger 2 some fans have been waiting for since 1995. Chrono Trigger reputation and masterpiece is a gem in video game history and highly unappreciated franchise which Squaresoft now Square or whatever their new name for their studio happens to be. It is a genius work from very highly talented video game designers and artists which made Chrono Trigger one of the best video games I ever played. The music was phenomenal, the story was engaging, the graphics and depth of the game with the time travel really felt something special. It is almost like reading a book or great novel when playing this game or the same way with the Legend of Zelda games or Final Fantasy games. You really get invested in the characters and timeline and it is so well done. I really hope as a fan they make an official Chrono Trigger 2 because this game is legendary.
Hi @AustinSV. I just started watching your videos and enjoy your depth, but I am left wanting some closure at the end. I feel that it's not very clear what your preferences are and the videos have lacked a summary of all of the detail you go over. Basically a standard conclusion paragraph. Would you consider summarizing your content at the end so it's easier to select a version of a game i'm interested in?
The first time I played CT on PS1 I noticed all the reverb in the music was missing. At the beginning of the game leave town immediately to hear that pleasant piano tune. On the SNES it has an echoing quality to it which is completely absent from the PS1 version. Great video as always!!
Maybe they could not emulate the sound chip inside the SNES (which was in fact made by Sony) on the PS1 version. Same for the new Chrono Cross remaster. The reverb is gone (you can tell when in-game pausing).
I have to wonder if SE is planning to do more with this series in the near future. They're finally remastering Chrono Cross, and I didn't realize until now that they'd been recently updating the Steam release of Chrono Trigger. It's odd to see them suddenly caring about these games again
Cross did just hit that point where the original game isn't a viable way to play it anymore, so the timing makes sense. I'm hoping it means they're planning to do something too, even if it's just something Chrono themed in FF14. Been a fan for a long time, I'd like to get *something*.
This and DQ IX on DS were the 3 games i played while living on an island working nightshift at a resort. My fondest gaming memories aside from those of my NES youth.
Great video! I'm still deciding between the DS version rom on original hardware or the SNES ver. on an emulator with CRT filter, but since I don't own an original copy of those I'll buy the steam version to support them.
I'm about to replay this game for the first time in a quarter century and based on this video I'll be doing it on the SNES. Thanks for the comparison. I actually never completed all the optional content as a kid and I'm really looking forward to it.
The load-time issue with the PS1/3 releases are unique to the US versions, this does not happen in the EU and JP versions. I'm familiar with the matter because many years ago people were wondering why this was happening and no clear answer could be found, but it was only affecting people with the US version... at the time, nobody in the emulation community had done any code-analysis on this yet.
tried steam version, couldn't do proper crt filter. switched to snes retroarch, koko-aio, with commodore night shader it looks great. I'm enjoying my first time playing the game.
I remember playing this to 100% on SNES ages ago, absolute classic, probably my favorite overall experience in gaming. At some point I tried the mobile version and found out that various item names such as Tonics were changed, how many of the other versions still have the item names I'm used to? I'm currently thinking of trying either the PS1 version or the DS version, but as someone that didn't really get into chrono cross any content that connects the games after the fact sounds unnecessary to me.
DS version is far superior...content wise it's complete and ties in well with Chrono Cross PS version has loading times at every battle. Probably one of the worst versions our there.
Chrono Trigger is almost impossible to find on DS now. I’ve got the 2DSXL, which plays every 3DS and DS game I think, but there are “copies” floating around saying they only work with original DS, leading me to believe they’re ROMs or duplications. I have also seen some Japanese import versions of the game that seem more available to purchase compared to the US version. Any idea if that’s a viable option? Would the text auto-translate to English if I used the Japanese import (since my 2DSXL is USA registered)? Just thought I’d ask around, since internet searches have been confusing, and most internet posts are years old by now.
The NDS version was the ons I played. Playing RPG games on the NDS with the dual screen was always nice and I kinda miss it now nowadays. Might pick up the Steam version since there have been a lot of good updates since its was terrible at launch .
The mobile version didn't originally have that awful smoothing, I was in the middle of a playthrough when the "update" hit and kind of destroyed me wanting to complete it... Kind of hope SE puts it on Switch eventually.
@@TomAnderson7 As far as I can tell from looking up a few post about it, they haven't changed the visuals nor added the ability to revert it back to normal despite apparently releasing a new update back in March.
Makes me so happy that I bought this game new/sealed not at launch or at a retail store. Online, when game collecting was FUN and not HELLa expensive. STILL use my DS Lite today and try to collect for it properly, so far about 105 games.
It's a truly mind blowing game. you put alot of effort into this... And I'm really glad you made it... I think i speak for everyone when i say, We can't wait for your next chrono triggers comparisons video To the sequel of chrono trigger chrono cross.. 5**** Time / space Rock the clock !
Two small changes that baffled me about the PC/mobile version, the names were reduced to a max of 5 characters even though the DS version allowed 6. Which allowed you to actually name Crono Chrono. Also the option to change the background pallet of the text box entirely.
I played the DS version briefly since it was a rom on a R4 chip but then it got corrupted. I am glad I grew up with the SNES version playing it at my cousins house when we were kids. I do have the PSone on vita but the loading on battles isn’t too bad.
I expect the PS1 loading is probably something weird and unrelated to the disc speed for the most part, like decompression or something. Having the load times be deliberately programmed to be that long seems like a bizarre decision since everyone hated it even at the time, unless it was done to make sure all the files had loaded in or something.
I grew up watching my older cousin play this on the Playstation. Later on in the mid-2000s I got my DS (the original fat one) and I asked my mom to buy me Chrono Trigger soon after it released. I finally got to experience the game firsthand on my own and all the new additions to the DS version made it feel like a completely new experience. To this day it is still one of, if not my favorite (J)RPG to date.
I thought of getting the Steam version [now in 2022] since Chrono Cross got released today, as I've never finished that one, but I think I'll just stick to the original on SNES for CT. I would love to try the extra content, but otherwise, the game is just perfect for me as it is. I've seen the cut scenes on TH-cam... so, eh, I'm good.
Fun fact: The Japanese DS version can be played in English if you toggle the English option in the menu or play it on an English language DS or 3DS system!
On top my head DS versions of the first three Ace Attorney games Super Metroid Final Fantasy X International (PS2 only) Metal Gear Solid Integral (item descriptions are still in Japanese) Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance Super Smash Bros Melee Any Japanese version of a 1st Party Nintendo Switch game ( I’m sure this is the case for some 3rd stuff released worldwide) All Pokémon games from Gen 6 onward
Even more fun fact, the Nintendo DS was the last true handheld before the Switch where the hardware was actually region free. They started region locking their handheld system once they updated to the DSi and into the 3DS. While I applaud Satoru Iwata and Reggie for bringing success to the Wii and DS, region locking the Wii, DSi, 3DS, and Wii U were the worst decision ever made for gaming and Nintendo wonder why their stocks are falling once the 3DS and Wii U launch.
@@VOAN Yeah, we all knew that brother. Just wondering which DS games would actually recognize or dismiss region-locking and actually translate to the proper langy on actual hardware.
I got the Steam version just 2 weeks ago cause it was on sale, I'm having a blast playing it with Reshade CRT filters on. Although it's nice to have a physical copy, getting it digitally through steam and having the money go to Square isn't so bad. With Chrono Cross coming to Switch, I hope they announce Chrono trigger too at some point
I didn't think about that, but yeah having both games ported to newer platforms would be great! Course we're still waiting to see if the FF Pixel Remasters will comes to more platfroms as well.
@@hellfire92837 You realize developers have different teams for different games right. Porting a game doesn't stop a new game from being made. Especially a company like square enix that has multiple studios under it.
I think the only versions missing for me is the snes and mobile. I never had a chance to play CC on PSX so my first experience was on the DS. I do have it on steam and should probably give it a play sometime, been years since I last played. The differences are so interesting. I really hope the steam version fixes the bugs and add missing FMVs/content. Though seems easier just to emulate the DS version for missing content purposes.
Very informative video as always. I had already started with the DS port a while ago but wasn't aware about some of the changes. On another topic, I would love to see you cover the very first Persona someday, as it seems there is some major changes between ports.
Video about Persona 1 would be quite short considering there's pretty much just the Japanese PS1 version, the localized western version that is outright missing it's secret alternative story mode and the PSP remake.
I personally like the DS version, specifically because it has the four added dungeons and associated quests and the Dream Devourer fight that links Trigger to Cross. It also has the cutscenes from the PS1 version.
I'd like to see a comparison video for FF Tactics. Obviously War of the Lions is superior to the PS1 version, but the tablet version of WotL had some slowdown issues during big magic spells if your tablet wasn't powerful enough.
All versions of WoTL have slowdowns with abilities/spells, from that I've seen. Even back on the PSP when it first came out it had the massive slowdowns (on original hardware or emulated). That was enough to kill it for me and I can only play the original PS1 version of the game, despite their being less content.
Question: Are the versions with the additional ending setting up Chrono Cross worth speeding through before the rerelease to set it up, or is it still worth waiting to take time with this game later?
Hearing people prefer old English for Frog just shows how people will be nostalgic over the kinda localization changes they would complain about today, just reminds me of how much I see people complain about how Ha'anit was localized in Octopath Traveler but if Octopath Traveler was a several decade old SNES game maybe people would be nostalgic instead lmao
Man, it is because of localizations like Chrono Trigger that I think that Ha'anit complainers can sucketh my tainteth, bring me the extra flavor and exaggarated accents.
It also bothers me because Frog still speaks an older and more formal English, it just doesn’t feel as obnoxious. But people still act like he talks like “some regular dude” in the DS script.
I dislike both though I'll cut woosley some slack. His script was easily readable even when it came to Frog and its shortcomings largely understandable given constraints and standards of the time. I'll still take the DS translation any day.
I think I read something about the PS ports of these games that explained why the load times are so bad. It said that the game is basically running a ROM in a poorly-optimized emulator that dumps the RAM every time and it has to load EVERYTHING back into memory. I don't know if that's correct, but it sounds plausible to me.
I read somewhere that it was patching the text in the Japanese version in real time, repeatedly--Did anyone check if the Japanese version isn't that slow?
Until some proper re-master, re-make or port is done for Switch (or the next Nintendo console), the DS version will remain the best version to play for anyone.
7:38 Maybe out of the blue. Perhaps future releases of old NES/SNES games will include Ted Woolsey's original words dialogue as either a configurable option or something you can earn.
@@sasamisa1806 There were a few (verrryyy few) PS1 games that took up only 1 memory card block, but let you have multiple saves. I think. I guess Square was being a bit lazy ;)
This was very well done but there is 1 version not mentioned here and that being the Apple TV version. The Apple TV doesn’t let you download any app that’s also on phones the games on there have to be made with the Apple TV only which means it might have some differences from the mobile version and Apple TV does let you connect PlayStation controllers.
I yeah, played the Apple TV version with my controller and it was great. I wish square would bring all their games to the Apple TV but I guess there isn’t enough people to make it profitable.
I've been looking forward to this video for a while. Btw, I managed to go to a used game shop and pick up Baiten Kaitos, DQ V and 6 for DS, and Chrono Trigger, for like $40 in total. My only regret was not picking up DQ 9 at the time as well. This was like 5 years ago though.
I know I am late here, I’m playing this on Steam Deck and it’s phenomenal, only issue is the face buttons when you are entering passwords in certain levels
I've played it for a few years on 2 different SNES emulators. Bought it on steam and could never get it to respond to any of my controllers, being it a ps3, or the SNES-usb one. Found RetroArch, and and got it running, and can use the SNES-usb controller
I see a lot of people saying they need to do a 2.5d remake and while that would be cool I'd much prefer a pixel remaster cause there just currently isn't that perfect version of the original and if they do a pixel remaster where they AI upscale or even redraw the anime cutscenes add some remastered music and some other nice features that would be perfect imo cause the original is literally one of the best looking SNES games in existence which means it's gorgeously detailed pixel art. If they wanna do a 2.5d remake after that then fine but the original deserves a version where the very few problems that exist get fixed first.
Without a doubt, the SNES version is the best. The PS1 version is great for the cutscenes but the loading times (probably because of the CD instead of cartridge) just kills the game flow. On the SNES there was almost no charging time from the beggining to the end of the game.
I played the PC version and I quite liked it. IMO UI for the PC version (the newer on, not the mobile port UI) is really good. Having health bars imo is just a must especially in active time battles where quickly gauging how much HP party members have left is important
I searched for the video mentioned at 8:57 that apparently talks about ghosting frame in cutscenes but I couldn't find it. What title did you typed? Did you actually make more than one video about Chrono Trigger, pal? If so, I want to watch them all. Thx.
I had the DS version of Chrono Trigger but returned it the next day cuz I was at the time tired of turn based combat, little did I know I missed out on one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Now finding a DS copy is near impossible. This is my karma.
I was in a local gamestop a few years ago and found a DS copy for 20 or 25 dollars. I grew up on the SNES version and immediately bought the DS copy, it boggles my mind to see what they're going for now and I never plan on selling mine
Picked up the PS1 version digitally on PS3 and Vita. I can confirm that the fast disc read option on vita does make the load times a little better, though it seems to be by less than the PS2 fast read (It could be that they are the same but I have no way to test as I don't own a physical version of Chrono Trigger PS1 to test on PS2. If they are different the difference is barely noticeable). Based on my experience with other PS1 games on PSP, it should be about the same as Vita though I haven't tested it myself.

The android version seems fine so far. Quick load times. No built in guude though
There's some inaccurate information in this video, and it's missing a lot that could be said about different versions, some of which I've compiled here:
- There are lots of grammar and spelling errors in the DS translation of CT - I've listed a bunch before when discussing this topic.

We really needed a 3DS port of it.
Ds versions soundtrack sucks though
The DS Sound Quality is relatively poor compared to SNES/PS1.
I own both DS and SNES versions, and will hold onto my SNES copy for dear life.
The DS has lower audio quality. The definitive way to go for me is the patched (Re-Translate) SNES version.

Like with Final Fantasy VI, it's frustrating we can't get an absolute definitive edition without qualifiers.
I wish Square Enix would remaster Chrono Trigger or remake it and release a physical copy of it on Nintendo Switch.
Imagine Chrono Trigger remake like Secret of Mana...
They did that with some FF games as well. Unexpected but always welcome.

Steam version had a lot of problems on release, but I think it's the most accessible version today especially for those that wanted to play it when they were younger but now quite a bit older. Being able to play it on a big screen (rather than a DS screen) and the speed increase is great.

@alumlovescake im pretty sure they patched in all ds content tho moving diagonally still cause a slight shake
I finished it on the NDS about 8 months ago and I honestly think it's the best version because of the translation and the convenience of being portable and not having the PC issues
Though if you're not playing it on an actual DS I don't think it would be the best for emulation
honestly, ive been emulating it recently because i was playing the steam version and only about an hour in i had numerous crashes and streaming it on discord didnt show any of the cut scenes, so i just moved on over to the ds version but through emulation and its been alot smoother and menus are cleaner as well. only issues are audio is a very minor downgrade and the screen is smaller since it has to display 2 screens (i have the 2nd screen smaller though)

In any case, there are no exact words when describing the feeling while playing Chrono Trigger in any version. What I felt when I first played the game 27 years ago is the same when I replayed it 27 years later. Pure nostalgia and I am happy playing it over and over again.
God, that snes box art invokes so much nostalgia and memory. Its too legendary
👍 I just don't understand why the steam versions seem to be universally worse in all these square releases.
This is by far not the worst anymore. At release, sure.
Because they are, across the board, mobile ports with shoestring budgets, because the people writing the checks at Square Enix are more interested in cashing in on nostalgia than sharing and preserving their classic library.
The only steam versions that are worse are the mobile ports. The Pixel Remasters are great.
@@ValkyrieTiara more passable than great. There's always a better way to play these games than PR.
SNES version seems to be the best experience for those who don't care about the new extra content.
It's funny, despite how slow the load times are, the PS1 version was the first version I played and still managed to be one of my favorite games of all time. The core game is just that good. 😂

The Steam version works fairly well on the Steam Deck, though there may be a bug where the game reverts back to the home screen when trying to cloud save and play animated cutscenes at the same time. Besides that, since it’s a portable version with a wider aspect ratio, it’s pretty great.

I love the ps1 translation so much. I didn't mind the loading times. It does retain old English frog, which I greatly missed that in the ds version.
To my knowledge, the SNES version is still the only one to get the sound effects in Magus' Castle right.
Great video man, very helpful! I will be playing through the steam version in 21:9 soon

It's because. Apparently. The game is running an emulator in an emulator.

It did recieve a very early Windows port as well. But is not like a shorter video would be bad
I personally like the DS version, specifically because it has the four added dungeons and associated quests and the Dream Devourer fight that links Trigger to Cross. It also has the cutscenes from the PS1 version.
Excelent analysis, just what I was looking for. Keep it up with this kind of content! ❤
That Maximillian cameo though.
Question: Are the versions with the additional ending setting up Chrono Cross worth speeding through before the rerelease to set it up, or is it still worth waiting to take time with this game later?
Take time with it
Not really, as Chrono Cross just doesn't work well at all as a sequel to Trigger. It's better off being thought of as its own game.
Nostalgia is like a drug.
Nah, old frog all the way, if it doesn't sound like really bad shakespeare, I'm not interested. Not sure why I love it, but I find it enjoyable.
Thanks for the reupload. I didn't even knew you did a video about Chrono Trigger
I'm so glad I was able to snatch a DS copy of this game for about twenty-two dollars at a local retro shop before its price increase.
I’m glad my Aunt bought me this game before the price skyrocketed
I think I read something about the PS ports of these games that explained why the load times are so bad. It said that the game is basically running a ROM in a poorly-optimized emulator that dumps the RAM every time and it has to load EVERYTHING back into memory. I don't know if that's correct, but it sounds plausible to me.
I read somewhere that it was patching the text in the Japanese version in real time, repeatedly--Did anyone check if the Japanese version isn't that slow?
@@BagOfMagicFood Nother comment on here said it was only slow in the Us version
Until some proper re-master, re-make or port is done for Switch (or the next Nintendo console), the DS version will remain the best version to play for anyone.
Why?!
It’s surprisingly seamless on iOS. Looks and sounds great.
Brought it to the gym today for the treadmill.
7:38 Maybe out of the blue. Perhaps future releases of old NES/SNES games will include Ted Woolsey's original words dialogue as either a configurable option or something you can earn.
1:50 15 save blocks on the PS1...is that a full memory card, or did they let you save 15 times in one save block?!
Sounds like a full memory card to me, the same as with Final Fantasy VII. (^_^)
Lol
I enjoyed the DS version as I've played CT about 100 times already. Great game, and the extras were repetitive but still fun.
This game would be perfect for squares 2d-hd pixel remaster, I hope they make it.
I played the PC version and I quite liked it.
IMO UI for the PC version (the newer on, not the mobile port UI) is really good. Having health bars imo is just a must especially in active time battles where quickly gauging how much HP party members have left is important
OMG, I love this kind of videos! I know that is hard to gather all that info, soooo you have earned a new subscriber! 🤩😋
Great video! Love the information here.
I searched for the video mentioned at 8:57 that apparently talks about ghosting frame in cutscenes but I couldn't find it. What title did you typed? Ah, my search was made looking for some other video ever made in your channel with the word "trigger" in title and didn't find any other than the one I just watched. Did you actually make more than one video about Chrono Trigger, pal? If so, I want to watch them all. Thx.
I bought the mobile version the iPhone store. I’m working my way through it. Thanks for the info.
Great review just like all your FF version comparisons…and a Maximillian Dood Easter egg to boot!
How about covering the three versions of the original The World Ends With You game? Or all the versions of No More Heroes 1?
Thank you so much for the time you put into this and for the detail you go into.
Heh you should’ve kept it obviously you deserve this
@@timroehm1728 I've actually since then managed to find a copy for $41 so I can begin my redemption arc and right my wrong LOL
Could you play/compare 'tales of phantasia'? They're great games with rich stories and version histories, similar to ff series.
