I've been playing Nintendo switch version as I'm stuck in a hospital room every other week usually due to leukaemia testament, so being able to have the console on TV at home or hand held mode sitting on my bed (or hospital ward) has a been invaluable for my sanity lately.

      Me too.
      I'm 35 ( was 14 in 1997 )
Never played a RPG in my life.
Took me over 100 hours to get everything ( gold chockobo, side missions, killed all weapons etc ) took me nearly a year to finish
Fell in love with the game. Played 8 which was good. and 9 but final fantasy 7 is the best in the series by miles and also the best game ever made on any console. So far.
And theres many other ridiculously good games out there over the years.
      Resident evil, tomb raider,
Legacy of kain, golden eye, double dragon 2, tenchu, Mario kart, metal gear, syphon filter, castlevania
You get my drift. That's just some.
But final fantasy 7 tops them all.
Light years ahead of its time. And hugely respected to this day.
Thats why they re made that one particular game. And spent so much money/effort and time on it.

Lol, that's exactly my case too, but i'm now 18, and played it 4 years ago. The only thing i had at the time to play was my smartphone, so i played the shit out of older games with emulators. My childhood was all about cinematography and a little before FF7, i literally only played Resident Evil 4 and other few PS2 games as mere enterteinment, so FF7 really opened my mind regarding videogames.

NOTE: Today 17 May 2019 the game has been updated on switch and xbox one to fix some of the problems the ports had:
-Music will now resume where it left off once a battle has concluded.
-Transitions between cutscenes and gameplay no longer have a frame of black screen.
-The flashback scene that played incorrect music now plays the correct music.

ADDENDUM COMMENT, UPDATES TO THIS VIDEO HERE:
As of December 2019, the music reset bug has been patched in the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions. There is now NO version of the game with this bug.
There were other music bugs in the PC re-release of FF7. Some are still in the PS4 version but were never in the Switch or Xbox versions. For example, during a flashback very late in the game, the main theme is suppose to play in sync with what’s going on. In the PS4 and Steam versions the main theme isn’t used at all
. The correct music plays for the Switch and Xbox One versions. Another example is when you find Yuffie, her theme is suppose to play. Her theme does not play on the Steam version but it does play on all other versions
The odd quirks during the transition from fmv to in-game are now fixed. This is the black frames on Switch and the disappearing models on Xbox One.
DOTEMU is now credited when starting the game.
That's it for the patch notes. Some other things I'd like to add about this video. First off, the ladder bug I showed I feel is misleading. It occurred on multiple ladders but after restarting the game it didn't happen anymore. Second, the PSX version of FF7 is available digitally on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. The PS3 also plays PSX discs so you can just put the disc in the PS3. That's how I captured my footage of the game.

      @Dhalin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@Noobirus I'm kind of middle-ground between conservatives and people who want new everything. On one hand, I do like to up the graphics a bit, but on the other hand, I have fond nostalgic memories of these classic games. I don't like the official FF7 Remake because they took what was an ATB game and are going to turn it into something that looks like Kingdom Hearts, and..... that's not what I want. What I REALLY wanted, was something like modded FF7 for Steam, but without all the modding junk you have to do before you can even play the game. As for FF6, I can't stand FF6 for PC because of that gaudy font and window textures they use. They seem to think that modern gamers are kindergartners that need 50pt font to be able to read it or something, seriously. That, and the smoothing effect makes the pixel sprites look..... strange and bizarre, and the new character portraits look disconnected from the rest of the game like some college intern threw an RPGMaker game together using random assets they happened to find from random places. These viewpoints of mine aren't because I am a "Purist" or a "Conservative", but more just... I do like modded games, but they have to be modded RIGHT. You want Final Fantasy Remaster done *right* , look up the PSP version of FF4+After Years. In fact, I'll even link a screenshot or two:
      r.mprd.se/media/images/158745-Final_Fantasy_IV_-_Complete_Collection_(USA)-2.jpg
Compare that to this (the Steam PC version):
      gameidealist.com/wp-content/uploads/Final_Fantasy-IV_The_After_Years_PC.jpg
And it's just.... eugh. They used 3d models, but they are extremely low poly and those gaudy windows and fonts are just... what were they thinking?
EDIT: The fact you need a *SCROLLBAR* in the Battle Menu says they are wasting all kinds of room on the UI. I'm a person who likes to make good use of UI space, to be honest. The original game output at something like 256x244 pixels and they had battle menus without scrollbars. What's their excuse with the PC version at 1920x1080!?

One major flaw for the Switch Version if anyone's wondering: It tends to randomly crash after battles or cutscenes. When this happens, the game will freeze and the Victory Theme will be played on loop. This has happened to me so many times, getting far into the game and attempting to save only to crash right in front of the save point. The Switch version is still pretty solid, but you might want to take this into consideration if you're thinking about what port to get.

  • @alternativefacts3050
    @alternativefacts3050 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

The problem, is the priority of what Square has released.
That FFVII PC re-release originally was not on Steam. It was basically a repackage of the original PC release (with midi music that was patched out by fans before an official patch), and pushed forward cloud saving and built-in trainers as huge monumental update and a reason to repurchase it.
Who asked for that? What are fans asking for that when it comes to FFVII and a port?
Sure the technicalities of probably basing your port on an unfinished build, has more to do with not having that original source build available anymore... But, why not take another stab at that script? Run that thing through a spell-checker at least? Maybe add-in some updated music? You have enough live-recordings of the soundtrack of this game officially yourself at this point to probably replace everything. How about some concept art we haven't seen before? That seems like a bare-minimum thing to do.
By contrast: The modding community right now is up-scaling all the backgrounds with AI, redoing character models and animations, and adding voice-over to the entire game. For a company that loves re-releasing their products on every platform available, it doesn't feel their inclined to know what fans would like from these ports besides just having them run on said-platform. And finding out what fans want isn't exactly rocket science, when there are so many gigantic displays and examples in these mod projects available to choose from. Many of which come as standard now for remasters or re-releases. But again, it's not about competing with a mod community, or addressing every technical issue. All these problems are symptoms out of the bigger issue of priority. I'm not going to go into detail or stress how important that title is for Square for a billion different reasons. But it reflects poorly that in 2019 that a title of that much importance, figuratively, historically, commercially, and whatever else you wish to apply to it for Square: Can barely fix how character models blink from an official release.
But aren't we glad it's on the Switch.

Dithering is really interesting. The most common and extreme example we see still being used today is with typical news paper print, which typically only uses four colors (CMYK) and uses dithering to emulate more colors or give the illusion of finer detail than the printers are actually capable of.

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The PS1 heavily used dithering but it was also common in many Mega Drive games due to its limit of 64 colours on screen, combined with it’s infamously poor video quality without special equipment. Many other Japanese computers of the time used to use it too, such as the PC-98 and similar computers.

I started playing this on my PS2 earlier as my PS1 isn’t setup, on my lovely Sony KV-21X5U Trinitron CRT. I was kinda expecting it to look a bit weird due to the horrible pixelation that is incredibly obvious with 3D 240p games when upscale, but on my CRT it honestly looks incredible and stunning. Everything looks beautiful. The FMV looks slightly dated at most, and doesn’t look compressed at all! The characters, my main worry, barely look pixelated, and the backgrounds don’t look like compressed graphics at all. It’s just so good, I love it and was barely able to stop playing even though it’s now 4AM. I do wish there were more save points though, I played for 3 hours just looking for a save point.
While there might be issues, it just feels so amazing to play and looks mindblowing, I struggle to see how any other version could do it better.

If you didn't know about this feature, prepare to have your mind blown again. It's doesn't have a huge effect on FF7 but if you have a game with more complex textures like FF8 or FF9 the improvement is like night and day!

It must have taken you so long to make this video man! Like.. holy shit! You had to have played through AT LEAST a large chunk of almost all of those ports to get this kind of information and footage! Not to mention the subpurb and to the point editing procuction value. Not putting anything crazy in the way and thankfully mostly showing images from the beginning parts of the game, as to be concious of spoilers for people who haven't played it before and people like me who haven't plsyed it in far too long! So, for all that, I wanted to sincerely thank you! It's given me a very useful and concise summery of the info I needed on all the ports of FINAL FANTASY VII !
Recently, I decided to finally play the game again for the first time earnestly in almost fifteen years!
My experience with the game had been that I
Played it on PS1 a little in the 90s
Beat it on PS1 in the mid 2000's
Got the PS3 and PSVITA PSN versions (did you talk about this one?)
Got the PS4 version. Didn't play it.
Got it for PC on Steam and Modded the hell out of it to be insanely good!...Didn't play it...
Got the Switch version last week... And... I... Hate how easy it is to just cheat and speed your way through the game and just not even have the intended stress one needs to have from random encounters and almost dying to be able to release adrenaline in your body. So whenever I was in battle and I started to get really into it, sometimes I'd accidentally press real hard on both sticks in excitement and it would give me instant limit break and it immediately ruined my experience!!!
...The backgrounds look incredible though! Like holy shit!...but...they are nothing to what the PC version can do when modded.. However, on ALL the modern ports including the Switch version, the graphics just suck... they just suck!!! The characters all look totally super imposed onto the background and is worsened by the fact that the backgrounds are blurry now even though they look so good...
But not just that.. I was willing to forgive the super imposition of actors until I noticed my graphical deal breaker on the Red Scorpion fight in the beginning.
I noticed that the textures of all the models in the game had been blurred out. Which made everything look incredibly flat! Regardless of the small change in the shading and lighting.
The mod is not using the correct texture setting (they exists and is mind blowing what they are supposed to look like). And the backgrounds are too blurry.
So, that, coupled with the inability to turn off cheating, led me to just hooking up my old Playstation, bought an S video cable, hooked it up to my CRT TV and I gotta say...
    This just feels right

Gareth Williams play the original on an OG psx on a crt TV. Absolutely the best way to experience it. Honestly, "HD remasters" of PSX games are all god awful. Games were designed to render on a crt back in the day and the colors and dithering look awful on an lcd.

I just like the fact the ps4 generation versions come with the triple speed buff with the addition of the 'bug' propeller on the roller coaster in gold saucer so one doesn't need to spend ages getting the mop or cids strongest weapon and can instead get them in like 10-15 seconds. (Limit cheat comes in useful for power learning the second tier limit breaks also reducing grinding or waiting with fury status as well)

I thought I'd drop a fun fact here:
The french version was translated by one guy from the english version in a haste so a lot of the translations are laughable bad, for example in the US version when Cloud says "oh brother...", it's translated as cloud litterally calling Barret "Hey, my brother".
And because they (or he) had so little time, they disabled the script for the Midgar Mayor quest, and the answer is ALWAYS "MAKO".

What, no love for the unofficial but absolutely mandatory fanmod for the original PC launch known to us old-timers as "Final Fantasy VII GOLD"? The one that increased the resolution, allowed the gamer to replace the SDF field characters with their battle versions, allowed the gamer to replace the horrid music (composition is fantastic as always, but the version/sample quality was junk) with whatever music they wanted (most gamers went for official & unofficial orchestrated versions of the songs), and so many quality of life changes that it took Square almost a decade to come close to duplicating it?
    For shame...

The PS4 version has an incredibly annoying issue where the menus run at a higher framerate and the buttons are so sensitive that if you press down it will skip two items down the list instead of one, and there's absolutely no fix for it. It makes the game nearly unplayable.
For example: if you're in an item menu and you want to select a hi-potion, you scroll down one and press the X button, but the cursor has selected Phoenix Down instead. If you don't WAIT half a second before you press X, the menu will always select the NEXT item. And this issue has never been patched or fixed. The only time this issue doesn't happen is when you're battling with the game in triple speed mode, but you can't use triple speed within the main menu so there's just nothing you can do about it.
It honestly totally ruined my experience trying to play the game on PS4

    • @GradientGhoul
