Yeah, that's always the drawback of a Japanese developer trying to make a western sounding name and localization coming in and trying to tighten up the spelling. They have a way in mind of how it should sound, but if you never hear it spoken out loud then everybody thought it was like the English name Titus or Tidus, and not Tee-da. Same for Aerith. Even the Flowers in the coliseum have her name written as エイリス or Eiris, which is the way its written in the debug room of the original game as well.
Great review of all systems - very informative. The ps2 version will always be the classic best, but I do love that I can enjoy this game on the move now with switch! Feels like I get to relive a little of my childhood!

The lack of skipping cutscenes can be a drag in some parts of this game. As much as I really love the characters and combat in this game it can get a bit annoying having to listen to so much dialogue that isn't really needed to hear, read on repeat playthroughs. Yes characters even those little screen time npcs, enviroments, lore is key to a good rpg but on repeat runs it can be a bit of a pain in the ass to see them again and not skip or speed through them. I'm one of those guys who likes to repeat games even rpgs with certain builds or low level runs and see how far I can get without having to grind or use strong/counter items. This is a great video, thanks for mentioning all these details to us. I prefer the PC version with the mod but I don't always get the luxury of playing at home alot these days. I do wish the Switch version ran a lil better, it looks like a good port regardless but OUCH that price even on Digital is a bit much since I've replayed this so many times on ps2 and PC. But I do strongly recommend this game to first timers of Final Fantasy or people who just got into FF. Have fun ladies and gentlemen.
I really dislike how much more child-like Tidus'es face became in the hd version. It goes as far as altering his design since its quite drastic, he looks a lot more anime and younger where as in the ps2 version Tidus had more personality and more maturity in his face. Big deal-breaker for me.
I've been looking for it man, big time fan of FFX here (actually it was my very first PS2 or PlayStation game ever :) ) but I just can't find any differences in Tidus' face between the original and the remasters. Maybe the HD remasters dont look as good as you remember the game looking in your head? I had that experience recently when I replayed the GameCube version of Twilight Princess

I can't stress how much I appreciate it when people look at and inform people how good/bad a game may be on other systems comparatively. Cuz not everyone is a PC gamer (i.e. me) so while it's nice that the PC version is *"best"* it's also nice hearing how well the other versions stack up too.
I mostly game on consoles these days as I can't afford a decent PC. But I did buy this on Steam and it's really lovely, especially given the fact that it's actually DRM-free, which means you can run it with the Steam application uninstalled. I just hope that other Japanese companies will follow the same route when developing their PC ports, and also, Capcom has done well in this regard too in recent years.

Art Chief Tetsuya Takahashi. His last game with Square before Monolithsoft. You can definitely see his touch in the game based on his earlier work, but especially his later 3D work with Xenoblade.
After sinking 60 hours into the switch version without even noticing, I can't ever imagine playing the game anywhere else. Played in handheld mode probably 90% of the time. Just call me Tidus, because it was an absolute dream!
I cannot justify a $50 purchase with a 15 GB download code I got it for the PS4 for quadruple half the price I was so excited to have portability but I’m not paying 50 for a 19-year-old game Besides most of my friends have it on the PS4 already and on the PC they don’t want to buy it again
Great review, I ended up buying the Switch version and as most that I agree that having the boosters wouldn't hurt the game I'm very happy with the experience I'm having in this version. I play both docked and undocked and honestly I have nothing to complain about.
Welcome to 2021, where people actually don't care bout the cutscenes and rather skip them to move on with the story lol. Man in my days on the PS2 era, we were just craving for all that sheer graphical quality and gorgious CG. It was a new revolunary experience for the new hardware and it was sheer eye candy to us.
Look at it this way. If you're replaying a battle that happens right after a long cut scene and trying over and over again, you really don't want to have to sit through that same scene 10 times in a row. Me? I'm an obsessive idiot, and I'll sit through a whole scene I've seen 10 times out of some disturbed feeling that I didn't "really" complete the game if I skip or something, but that's my problem. Everyone else are picking the CORRECT option and skipping the scenes after the first watch.
I felt that way too back in the day. It's because cutscenes were like this cool new technology thing that didn't exist on stuff like the nes, snes, and not in an impressive way on the n64. Nowadays there's entire games that are just cutscenes so they lost their luster and if they don't need to exist then we'd rather just skip them

I don't necessarily care to have the game on ezmode or anything but it is nice to be able to skip some of the more grind-y parts of these often long games. I don't have as much time to play games as I did when I was 16 lol.
I never played the original release and only recently finished the remaster on PC, I never knew that the models were different but wow, Tidus has a much more realistic face in the original version. I can see why fans of the original game weren't happy with this change.
Been doing my homework on this game since it came out on the Switch recently, and this is the extremely informative video I was really needing. Great work!
When I was a kid I quit playing the story mode for FFX about 3/4 of the way through and just kept playing Blitzball. I was the only one that seemed to like Blitzball.
the music in this game made me cry. it's so beautiful and they have such deep backstories to them. road to zanarkand while the text displays: "listen to my story.. this may be our last chance" and via purifico being a prison where people were sent to die. I've never seen such depth associated with a soundtrack in a videogame before.
If you're primarily a PC player I say get that port. The mod mentioned in this video is fantastic. If you love your Switch and play on the go often, get that version. I have PS2, PS3, PS4, PC and Switch versions haha.
Thought you did a good job of showcasing things that a lot of us would be interested in. Thanks! I actually hav a PS2 that I bought back around 2004-2005 but never got this game. It still works but I need to get some good composite to HDMI for my modern TV. Plus I have a switch so I'll probably just get it for that. I loved FF VII and FF IX back in the day so I should probably take this game for a spin.
It's an excellent game. It really feels like the last of the "traditional" (read: PSX-era) Final Fantasy games. The biggest departure from the PSX era is that the battles are proper turn-based instead of ATB. But even then, this opens up the ability to see the upcoming turn order and use that knowledge to your advantage in battles, planning moves a few turns ahead of time.
One of the main things that has kept me from playing the HD versions is that being used to the original NTSC PS2 version, I don't like that some of the backtracking has been screwed with by putting super hard optional bosses in the way. The updated graphics don't really bother me that much, though I do prefer the older music for the most part.
i have been studying japanese for 3 years so dual audio is a must for me. PC is an easy choice. plus the project X mod also lets characters that dont participate in battle still get sphere grid points which cuts down on grinding.

PS2 ALWAYS! I'm playing remaster in PC and the characters' look is too hard and plastic. Their faces are emotionless. I don't like it. PS3? It's a CARTOON version. In PS2 version, all emotions are perfectly visible.
Never played any FF game, since November I bought FF7 (ps1 version and iOS), FFX & FFX-2 (ps2 version) & FFXII (ps2 version) I’ve loved every final fantasy I’ve touched so far is there any other I’m missing that I need to play?
Great video, I definitely appreciate the comparisons between versions and it would definitly help in making a decision which one to buy. But the faces... I really can't get over how some of them changed. I'm just glad the PS2 version is still available and that I can at least play it in higher resolution on the pc. Still sad to know that there is no definitive version of the game and there'll probably never be. (you could've added a Seymour face comparison, he also looks noticably worse in the remaster versions)
I have the physical released version for my Switch and I just love that version. I had to download the second part though. I also gotten the game when it came out for my PlayStation 2. But I never bother getting the 2nd part of the game back then. But now that I have the full entire version for my Switch I prefer only that version. Which reminds me I need to get back to that game. Hopefully sometime today I will go back to that game.
Originally started and played FFX on PS2 as a child now I am 25 years old Playing the HD REMASTER version on my PS4 Pro. And I’m LOVING IT! Got like 170 hours in so far
The definitive version has severe frame rate drops during gameplay, then, which accounts for what, 97% of gameplay? Yes, the PS2 has much better facial animations, but that doesn't render the remaster inferior when it's actually an improvement on *every* *other* criteria. There's more drama in this comments section than in FFX. 😁
@@krusenator123 When was the last time you played it? You're probably going on memory, trying to remember how it felt. Play it now, and you'll notice it.
i have it on switch. i never played before but it's fun being portable. and it doesn't look like an old game because it has some futures that makes you feel it's a modern as like touch screen functions, select soundtrack style (original or alternate). i guess i'm playing latest version on switch and it worth the price because it's like 4 games in one package.
One thing I did like in the PS4 version is that you can choose between the remastered soundtrack and the original one. I went with the original soundtrack. It was actually Final Fantasy X that made me want a PS2. I remember when I first saw the game how blown away I was.
Titus is really the only character who’s face distracts me while playing on my Switch. It’s softer and younger looking, less angular. But his EYES. They make him look less jaded because they’re almost... doe-eyed, and it’s pretty unusual for a guy to have that developed of a lash-line. Like, give him eyeliner if you want, go for it, but this is just an odd, weird level of lashiness. I also love Lulu’s corset being more detailed; dealing with chronic back pain, I had to wear hot and bulky back braces (like five inches thick and $450), but one day I saw some photo with Lulu and it hit me. I’ve been making use of corsetry ever since! You can actually stealth them under certain clothes so no one realizes something is up! I don’t have to not go out because I’d be in a huge life vest of a back brace or deal with people staring. I’ll always be fond of her character for making me think, “Oh that’s actually an option,” and she shouldn’t have to walk around in-game with her corset all fuzzy and poorly rendered by today’s standards.

The facial animations are a deal breaker for me. I legitimately think the new models ruin the games. Any emotion shown by the characters in cutscenes is lost. Yuna gives a speech late in X that is almost unwatchable in the remakes. It's one of the most emotional scenes in the game and she looks like she's half asleep, despite the voice acting being very well done. It's just off-putting. X-2 has a similar problem. The faces are animated much better than in X, but they just don't look right. Most of the characters (especially Yuna) almost look like different people. That might not bother people who haven't played the originals, but I just couldn't un-notice it. I think anyone is doing themselves a disservice by not playing the PS2 originals. Those versions are the way to go, especially if you have access to a CRT television.
Dude, this isn't L.A. Noire. The much better facial animations of the PS2 version do *not* outweight every other substantial enhancement (frame rate, resolution, new models, textures, AO, font size and HUD arrangement, QoL improvements, etc.) on a game in which you spend only 3% of your time watching cutscenes. I can play the original PS2 version on a 32" SONY Trinitron XBR Wega through official PS2 component cables, and I still prefer the new version.
@@gingataisen The faces are a huge deal in these games. A huge part of final fantasy games is the emotion that characters convey in each and every scene. The remasters may have improved graphics in every other area, but the game just doesn't feel the same. You don't relate to the characters in the same way in the remasters and that's a huge let down for this genre.
Playing for the first time on switch right now, I'm excited. I was a Kingdom Hearts kid growing up, and I never owned an FF game until FFVII: Remake. Loved it and then moved on to FFXV, FFXVI, FFVII: Rebirth and Crisis Core. Now I'm hooked, and I wanted to go into the classics, starting with X/X-2. I'm probably going to play FFVIII next!
Real quick about the bit on International with the language options, since I'm a bit familiar with this: Final Fantasy X International in Japan only had English voices, regardless of which language you chose. In fact, the Japanese text chat has been re-translated back to Japanese and no longer reflects the Japanese voice dialogue. This is incredibly obvious if you use an un-dub patch on this version and are playing with Japanese voices, as the Japanese text will be a complete mismatch to the voiced dialogue (for the most part). This is not the case with the PS3, PS4, PC, and so-on and so-forth versions of this game, where the Japanese text once again matches the Japanese dialogue.
As to why they did this, I imagine it has to do with a number of changes made to the English dialogue and scenes. While there's very (and I do mean very) few changes made to the cutscene lipflaps and the like, some of the dialogue had been modified significantly at times and may no longer reflect the Japanese dialogue. There's also one scene where Wakka is laughing in the English version, and in the Japanese version, he's talking during this scene. Square likely translated it back to Japanese to avoid confusion for speakers that have some level of knowledge of English. Not to mention, some of the few cutscene changes where the dialogue doesn't match the onscreen moments (such as Wakka laughing versus commenting to Tidus about what he said), would be awkward. Not to mention, Yuna's final line to Tidus was changed from 「ありがとう」 (Thank you) to "I love you" (I think the Japanese text uses 「愛してる」 in the back translation, but I can't remember, been awhile). Oddly, I don't think Square Enix really did this with Final Fantasy X-2 International. If it was, it was much more minimalist approach compared to what they did with X with back translating.
I owned the original PS2 FFX International since 2002 and now had the PS3, PS4, Vita, and recently the Switch. For hardcore fan like I do and bought all the copies for each consoles, I'd say it's a matter of gameplay and style. For instance, the common team I used on my initial PS2 is Yuna, Tidus, and Wakka because Tidus and Wakka does a lot of damage on their overdrives and Yuna summon aeons. On my PS3 and PS4, I tried those characters I don't usually used as my main. For instance, Kimahri, Lulu, and Wakka for PS3, Auron, Rikku, Yuna on Vita, Tidus, Kimahri, Auron on PS4, and my switch main is Tidus, Yuna, and Wakka again just like my old PS2 team. For me, if the remaster graphics is looks good on you, then go for PC or PS4 even. (Or XBoneX, I don't own one.) But Switch, you can have it on the go or play docked and the graphics and draw distance is much better than PS2 era. Switch wins 1000% of all argument. Goodbye! EDIT: Yes I don't use Lulu much on my team. Magics is much better on Yuna. The only good magic Lulu has is she have a weapon the has 1mp cost, double cast and double power which is useless and long animation compared to combos of Tidus, Wakka, and Rikku using Quickshot.
Do the ps4 and switch versions not have a speed up function? I remember the original being very slow and after watching this video, I don’t really see any improvements with the remaster that are worthwhile except the speed up functionality.
I can't decide between pc and switch version. For 1 the pc version is a lot cheaper but the switch version I could play in bed so I really struggle making a decision

Sadly, they did it again in FF8 remastered. Squall is not the Squall we once knew.
Tidus is actually a child, though. He's 17. Maybe when you were younger, 17-year olds didn't look as young as they do to you now.
@@mbvglider - i.ytimg.com/vi/ZkqyCAHmo2I/maxresdefault.jpg 17 year old boys don't typically look like anime babies. Every game has a certain style and that's fine but I really enjoyed the original style of ffx. It was a unique world made by a japanese company with some anime influence like all final fantasy games but with a mature style. They replaced that design with something much worse with less character.
@@christophervinson5088 - i.ytimg.com/vi/ZkqyCAHmo2I/maxresdefault.jpg tell me there's no difference. The PS2 version is far superior, the facial animations in the newer versions were also made more shallow.

I can't stress how much I appreciate it when people look at and inform people how good/bad a game may be on other systems comparatively. Cuz not everyone is a PC gamer (i.e. me) so while it's nice that the PC version is *"best"* it's also nice hearing how well the other versions stack up too.
...

I remember playing with a friend on PS2 with excitement when those HD scenes appear... It was 2008 tho.
Nowadays there's entire games that are just cutscenes so they lost their luster and if they don't need to exist then we'd rather just skip them
pc with a ps2-face mod would be the perfect FFX.

I agree, his eyes are so big it makes him look like an infant lol. Also the colour.. they're way too saturated blue!

@@SSJfraz
Yes, they are very important, but like I said, they do not outweight the substantial improvements made to every other aspect of the game.
@@gingataisen Yes, I get the logistics of your argument. But if the game doesn't feel like the original, then that's a pretty major deal for an RPG.

Turning a characters face into plastic isn’t the best choice for a remaster
I can't decide between pc and switch version. For 1 the pc version is a lot cheaper but the switch version I could play in bed so I really struggle making a decision
