    HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

    I kinda liked Ruth's subtle sassiness in this film, the audience suspected that she had probably gone through some sexist bullshit as well to get that job. Too bad it took her a while to shake her own racist prejudices.

      This is true and is even touched on in the movie however it's hardly surprising for a movie set in civil rights era Virginia to make white-on-black racism the primary focus.

      @Thor Swenson Thor, black people in the USA could be prejudiced but not racist because they did not have the political power or cultural dominance to prioritise their race over others.

    So much of what is put forth on the space program has focused on the astronauts- this movie is great because it focuses on the tens of thousands of people who put them out there.

    what does she mean by geometry and speaking

    • @MariaMartinez-researcher
      @MariaMartinez-researcher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      Lucy Mclaren The guy asks the supervisor what she can do (geometry) instead of asking her, the polite thing to do. He was being not too subtly dismissive and disrespectful. The supervisor remarks she can do geometry and she also speaks (for herself). That's what she says she can do both things, when finally he addresses her as he should have for starters. Geometry and speaking.

    • @barneydenstad2148
      @barneydenstad2148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ariaflame-au Yes. That was film of course. But almost so was in reality too: Our women in question understood quite early the new electronic computers would with time make most of the human computers unnecessary. So they early made sure to reeducate themselves into the ones whom did programmes for these electronical computers... Of course, them being first rate matemathicians did helped them much to make appropriate programs. So it wasnt only the computer language, you must know the math if you want the computer to do the math... Especiellly in the first quite dumb computers.

    • @MrSunrise-
      @MrSunrise- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sigh. A computer was a person. Someone figured out how to do specialized calculations with mechanical mechanisms and the fire control computer was born. Somebody else had an idea to make a configurable computing machine and that became an electronic digital computer. It wasn't cheaper to employ people than buying an *electronic computer* ; it it was the *only* way to perform complex calculations. Richard Feynman wrote in "Surely you must be joking..." about large rooms full of computers doing work on the atomic weapons programs. Now, we name our machines after the occupation of "computer".
