So, imagine how much contributed Soviet "computers", the first artificial satellite, the first animals in space, the first human being in space, the first space walk, the first woman in space... When Taraji P. Henson signed on for the lead role, she met with the real-life Katherine Johnson, who was 98 years old, to discuss the character she was about to portray. Henson learned that Johnson had graduated from high school at age 14 and from college at age 18, and was still as lucid as anyone years younger.
After the film was screened for Johnson, she expressed her genuine approval of Henson's portrayal, but wondered why anybody would want to make a film about her life. IMDb

Re John Glenn’s reaction to the computer giving false data was another highlight. “Ask the girl. The smart one.” He could have said the black one or any number of inappropriate racial adjectives but the makers of the film decided to separate genius from skin color. It was also what Glenn actually said but movie makers rarely care about reality if it serves their story.

I was an extra in this movie. You can actually see me at 4:44 standing to the left. This movie was such an incredible experience. I was there when they filmed the bathroom scene where she said she had to go to the colored bathroom and it was so amazing watching her work and bring such intensity. They would cut the scene and film again like most productions do and between takes she would joke around telling the director it's a wrap and she was done and they would film again. They kept that up for a few takes and finally on the last take she started dancing around. You could see Kevin Costner was trying not to laugh. He would turn around and go into his pretend office.
They filmed the Nasa scenes in 2 locations. The scenes of the office with the big chalkboards was actually filmed in a high school gymnasium in Atlanta. The other parts of NASA was filmed in an old mental health hospital that has been shut down for years. It's the same place they use for Hawkins lab in Stranger Things. We worked a lot of shows at that old hospital.

I bought this film as someone suggested I watch it. You should buy this film and watch it. Three black women who helped NASA with their figures to put a man into space. Watch the part where KK and the black woman go into a meeting. KK asks his colleague what the figure is. His colleague cannot find it. The black woman just simply comes out with it and astonishes everyone in the room with her memory. Then she is handed a piece of chalk. Goes up to the board and proves her figures are right. Well worth watching. A good story and it also shows the racism these 3 women had to put up with. I give this film 5 stars out of 5. A damn good film to watch not to be missed. PC. 20. 08. 2022.

Can't watch Jim Parsons without seeing Sheldon, just like I can't watch Dean Stockwell without seeing Al. While these four women were trailblazers in their time, they said that the movie wasn't a true representation of their experience in NASA.
From my own experience, the agency is unique amongst government agencies in two ways: they think of themselves as a family, and they have no problem with people who are trying to help and can prove their point. We see this time and time again in the movies. I saw it firsthand when an outsider was able to convince the agency to stop launch preparation for STS-133 and begin an investigation into why the insulating foam had cracked and fallen off the external tank during a tanking test.

As far as Hollywood goes with accuracy, can't really give them all the blame. I've seen time & time again how sheepishly audiences can get bored, eyes glaze & become disinterested in shows & movies with all facts and little to no drama. Personally, if I'm interested in a subject-like nasa, wouldn't matter about all facts & little to no drama, for quite awhile anyway. Does come to a point where if I'm not involved in any of the actual projects, I'll get bored just listening about it.

    • @spaceflight1019

@@fargoentertaining6145 , the way I see Hidden Figures, FWIW, is of a story in the same vein as October Sky. A group of people, with one central character, had to overcome various obstacles to accomplish their goals.
I've been to Coalwood. In 1957 it was about as isolated as a small town can be.
I've been to Virginia Beach in the early 1960s and seen the "whites only" signs.
      Obstacles.
