8-bit Sonic the hedgehog was one of the first games I ever played but it I played it on my mums master system not the game gear. Surprisingly I have no nostalgia for Sonic, even though I remember liking it.
Oh yeah I remember these. Us Brits dug the Master System, so my house had one. First one of these we got was Sonic 2, because it was the intro to Tails and was what added to my anticipation for Mega Drive Sonic 2. Then we got 1 afterwards, and then Chaos. No Triple Trouble though, and I didn't even know about Blast till TH-cam Liked them, but I would because I was a Sonic fanatic as a kid. Not kidding, I had a shrine to Sonic. The vanity mirror in between the cupboards in my bedroom, filled with toys, comics etc. So basically, they did right by me back then, although I did think Tails was fucking dead in the bad ending of 2!
He totally died! There's no other way to read it and I'm not convinced that the Tails we've known since 1992 has been a ghost this entire time. I mean, think about it. He just keeps coming back after you've outrun him...
For that Question of the day, I'd say LittleBigPlanet PS Vita is my favorite portable entry to a console series. The PSP game is also really good, but LBP PS Vita has such a unique identity compared to any other entry in the series with a sort of gloomy yet whimsical aesthetic. It's absolutely my favorite game for the system. Like, wow. I'd also say if you ever go through the Game Gear version of 8-bit Sonic 1 again, I absolutely recommend hunting down the 3DS Virtual Console ROM of it since that version modifies some of the more eye strainy elements to be a bit easier to digest. The Master System version also seems to have less drastic use of flashing by default if you haven't played that version of the game yet. But yeah, it was fairly neat as a first time viewer to hear your takes on these games. I'll always appreciate them as their own really neat experiences. (Even with Chaos being kind of eh, and Sonic Blast being Sonic Blast.)

@@NichePlays No, on the contrary. The Genesis Sonic 1 was my very first videogame and it impressed me immensly. But gameplaywise I prefered the slower stages like Marble Zone and the infamous Labyrinth Zone. The 8-bit Sonic was just more of this slower pace. To this day I don't get why Sonic has to be all about speed.
@@Filmonaut That's valid! I liked the slower moments of Sonic 1 too (sans Labyrinth Zone) and wish it made more of an appearance in the series to this day. Here's some trivia you may not know about; Marble Zone was supposed to be in the 8-bit version too but got cut. The music is still on the cartridge though
@@NichePlays Totally didn't know that! As a child I was stuck on Marble Zone for the longest time. The game completely took a 180 after Green Hill Zone and suddenly it became all about precise plattforming as if the developers wanted to compete with a certain italian plumber. I worked too!
A fun retrospective on the Game Gear titles. I played the first 3 games with 2 of them (1& Chaos) being some of my first experiences playing video games & I would say at least 1 & Chaos hold up pretty well. I do want to try Triple Trouble & Blast out of curiosity despite the issues with the latter & being on Origins Plus.
None of them are really *that* bad of games so I'm right there with you! It's a shame Sonic Origins Plus fumbled what should have been such an easy layup for them, otherwise it'd be a no brainer to scoop it up for me!

I largely think the 8 bit Sonic platformers (not including Blast because good lord) hold up pretty well. Sonic 2 and Triple Trouble especially stand out to me like games with their own identities! They're no replacements for the Genesis games, but they don't need to be. They're just nice. (And yeah, everything about the release of Sonic Origins [Plus] has been a *big oof* from start to finish. On a positive note, Sonic Origins does make a hell of case for emulation and rom hacking 😅)
I couldn't have said it better myself and yes, Origins definitely proves that emulation needs to be a thing haha. As for Sonic Drive ins, I'm actually not a fan of them or most fast food places in general. I will however defend Sonic Blast. Even though they have peanuts in them and those can literally kill me, I will defend them with my life (im in a toxic situationship with them, obviously)
Classic and awesome choice. I've only played the SNES one since I only finally just scratched it off my backlog in January but I've heard great things about the DS port
