One thing I always loved about S3&K was the level transitions. Instead of just fading to black and loading the new zone, it felt more like a journey from one place to another. Made the journey feel more cohesive and less like random levels thrown together.

    • @Amir-qz4bn
      @Amir-qz4bn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Even Sonic Mania originally had the fade to black before the Plus add on although that might've been intentional for the fact that the returning zones were meant to be a surprise back then. When the add on got released it felt like a cohesive adventure

It's the Zone where the game ramps up it's difficulty by a good margin, simply by introducing water, an entirely new hazard to the player. I know I beat my head against it while I was a kid, especially trying to time my jumps against those spikes that come out of the walls, and those rotating flails, and then getting impatient because Sonic was literally drowning.

34:00 - There is actually a reason they didn't change Sonic CD's past-version music tracks: the Present and Future tracks were all CD-quality audio tracks and exist on the CD as standalone audio files that can be changed out freely as long as you rename them accordingly (something that could actually be done for emulated versions of the game if you knew how), but the Past version music tracks are actually sequenced tracks that use the console itself to produce the sounds. THOSE were hard-coded into the game and could not be easily changed, so the western localization team pretty much couldn't do anything about them.

Before watching the video: What I remember the most about playing classic sonic back in the day was the feeling of freedom - the fluid animation and high speed made you feel free. In the classic Mario games you could run pretty fast and fly, but in Sonic, you could literally blow through the stage so fast you'd fly off the leading edge of the screen, and you could run straight up walls or around loops. No other platformer was like that back then, it was a totally novel experience. You could also bounce off objects, ricochet around, and steer your jumps in the air. The physics were imprecise but you still felt a tangible interaction with the world. The stages felt like actual places you could explore, too.
The stylized aesthetic of the game was super colorful and stood out from the 8-bit consoles that were reaching the end of their generation but still extremely popular. And of course the music - Sega & Sonic Team have always had fantastic music for their games and the classic Sonic titles had some of the best music on the Genesis (and in the 16 bit era in general).
So yeah, it was really just the whole package. Great gameplay, graphics and sound - things that typically make a game "good".
By modern standards it's a little clunky - and it's still frustrating when you collide with an object and stop all your momentum - but back then a lot of the flaws were overlooked because there was just nothing else like it. Nowadays, I think Freedom Planet is a great spiritual successor and captures the feeling of the classic Sonic games most closely.

perfect observation, it's probably a major reason the post-genesis games (hell, throw 3D Blast in there) are not just bad, but _glitchy._ because it's really hard to do a good job of programming something fast and agile. The modern games always have these long extended periods of uncontrollability.. and while the old games did occasionally drop you into a tube you couldnt control your journey through, it was brief. not just "okay stop and feel the spectacle hoohoohaha! okay now quicktime events for stunts in the air!" and yet even THOSE have a strong tendency to glitch out. and they're on rails!

The lore building element is super important. People just seemed to forget that classic sonic DID have a rich story. But in the 2010’s SEGA seemed to take the “story = bad” thing to heart and scrap any good character based storytelling in later games. It’s such a shame too because the classics did have this, with 3&K possibly having the best story in the series imo. Great video!

I’m actually in the exact same boat in terms of my introduction to Sonic The Hedgehog. I also was introduced through the Sonic Mega Collection on PS2. Although my first 3D Sonic game was not Shadow The Hedgehog, but the rather infamous Sonic The Hedgehog 2006, which I got for Christmas alongside Super Mario Galaxy and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

This is purely down to superior artistry, too. The Mega CD doesn't increase the colour pallette of the Megadrive, which is why most of the FMV games found on it tend to look quite awful.

Nick has definitely made me question whether S3&K is the best in the classic quadrilogy, despite the fact that Sonic 2 is the first video game I've ever played and I've called one of my favorites for years. Tails alone is actually the best option in Sonic 2 because of the hitbox difference. This may not seem like a big deal, but it actually helps out a lot more than it would seem since the creators failed to take it into account when designing certain things. For example, a lot of things can't actually crush tails in certain positions.

@Holden The Gamer Sega wasted a lot of money trying to keep the Genesis alive with the cd and 32x, even though the Saturn was coming out months after the latter. On top of that the Saturn was expensive along with a plethora of other issues, forcing them to discontinue it early in favor of the Dreamcast but by then it was too late. they had lost too many game producers and fans because of their lack of focus. The Genesis itself was a great system and was a legit rival for the SNES. Sega just couldn't keep it together into the next generation of consoles. In a way Nintendo put the nail in the coffin by screwing over Sony, which in turn made Sony put out the Playstation on their own, becoming the leading alternative to Nintendo. So Nintendo killed their greatest rival by accidentally creating an even stronger rival.

Another insightful Sonic video you've done, I could feel the passion for sure with it and the love you have for these classic games even if you played them much later after their release. Me personally, I was introduced to Sonic through Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. I was born in 1991 and unfortunately, my household didn't have a Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, nor a Dreamcast growing up and prior to that, I hadn't heard of Sonic until about 1997 when my brother and I caught an episode of AOSTH on Toon Disney though we had no idea that Sonic was actually a Video Game series till about 2000 when we met a good friend who introduced us to the games with Sonic Adventure 2 and explained about it. So yeah, technically I came around with the Adventure/Advance era.
I've gotta admit that even though I did get the Sonic Mega Collection in 2004 for the Gamecube, I never really appreciated the 2D Sonic games. I kept dying on Marble Zone in the first game and Chemical Plant Zone in the second game. The only one I ever made any progress in was Sonic 3 and even then, I never beat the game. So needless to say, while I had a baseline appreciation for the classic games, I just never got into them and I wish I had a different mindset back then because even though I still suck at the classic games only ever getting through Sonic 3 and Sonic CD, I can tell they are really special and I feel like I missed out on them back when they were semi-relevant before the Dark Age took over.
    Anyway, awesome retrospective.

About the bosses yes they are easy but also memorable and are the most unique in the series. Lastly about the Amy while she can be annoying she is not in the game most of the time. One thing I don’t get is that the graphics are real good looking and is the best in the series. I'm confused on how to take this. Is it a joke? Or are you literal? I can't tell because of your pfp and name

I've come to realize something... You know how there are groups of rings in Sonic CD that appear to be stuck in the walls for no reason? Well, I believe that these are the rings you'll be able to collect in the past and future versions of the stages. What I think they do is, they use the same map for the stage, change the pallettes to fit said time zone, change some of the gimmicks, and essencially shift some of the ramps, platforms and stuff. The layout has some differences, but the level is still the same. It would be insane if they cramped 7 Rounds times 2 Zones (not counting the 3rd Zone for the boss) TIMES 4 different time periods, equaling to 56 different levels! Instead, they just have 7 times 2 levels, 14 levels, but shift some of the layouts to make them different, and allow for plenty of rings to be collected in all time zones.
